Jack leaned back in his chair and waited. He hated waited. Every tick of the weathered grandfather clock in the corner seemed to arrive just a little slower than the one before it as if time itself was dreading the meeting just as much as Jack.

“Let’s get this show on the road,” the man grumbled to himself. Idle hands were the devil’s playthings and those hands desperately needed something to do in the interim. Thin fingers that belonged on ivory keys danced along the tabletop before him, tracing the flaws and imperfections in the wooden surface. Each small scar or dent in the worn finish told a story of the hundreds that had sat in the same chair before him. Jack wondered how many of them had sat in the same place with the same fears and worries.

“It’s about time,” he said with a voice that sounded like the cigarette smoke clouding the man as he heard the groan and complaints of the old door opening behind him.

Jason opened the door slowly as he walked in. The door creaked as if the hinges have not been oiled for some time, Adding to the awkwardness of the situation, since the only noise was the loud and annoying whine of the door.
He stepped inside and closed the door, quicker this time, and removed his coat and hat. He hung them on the rack next to the door, walked over to the Piano. Today he was to show what he had learned in the week, Which was the scales. This being his third week, he should be able to follow the metronome at 160 beats per minute doing the D scale. Yet Jason was extremely nervous, He had practiced the scale religiously for the past week, Yet he could only keep up at 140 beats per minute. On his was there he had repeated the scale to himself over and over again, playing the keys on an imaginary piano.

D,E,F#,G,A,B,C#,D He would think to himself, Yet it was pointless, The order of the keys was not his problem, The weighted keys slowed him down. He knew of Jack's temper, and was ready to receive the imminent verbal flogging. He stared at the keys, the piano was still slightly resonating, which means that Jack had just finished using it, probably to occupy his time as he waited for Jason to show up. Jason arrived to the cushioned, two people seat in front of the piano and took a seat next to his teacher as he was used to doing.

"Sorry I'm late for the lesson, sir" He said as he waited for his teacher to respond.
