Re: Redskies, A New Rpg System ( )

Postby Redskies on Sat Dec 29, 2007 3:49 am

Thx mate, I'm glad to hear you like it :) I hope many like you will like the non-orc/elf/dwarf concept. I know I'm not the first one to try out some new races, but the overall Rpg scene is still dominated by the classic fantasy elements, so hopefully people will like some "fresh blood" ;) My only fear is that some of the races might seem too "foreign" for players to pick as their character. I've therefore put a lot of work into making some good race descriptions. Hope it works out as planned, but feel free to pop by my Race section and read more. If you have any criticism or comments I'd very much like to hear them.

Excellent! But is your site having problems? I got a server not found error when I tried the links. Your descriptions are more confusing than informative; you throw out a lot of names with no explanations. I wanted to find out more.

Gjurons/The Regno/Khalens: need a little more info on these things.

“Discovered” and “Alien”: Is this a space faring people or did they discover some kind of planar/teleportation travel? Or is this a previously undiscovered area of the earth?

When you say wretched Christians, do you mean they were desperate and in a wretched condition, or that they behaved atrociously towards locals they found? Where they running from trouble or are they looking to dominate? I think that needs to be answered here.

Confusion: You said the Novines where conquered by the Gjurons, but in the next paragraph you say they were saved by Khalens. So are they subjugated and controlled by the invaders and a few Novines escaped to the south or what? Did the Gjurons get driven away?

Instead of throwing out summary of the whole history, I think it would be more enticing to paint a scene of what might happen in such a world. Use an everyman character just going through the everyday tasks of life, or describing a confrontation of some kind between the stranger races of this New World. Let the players see the world through a character’s eyes.

I’m only making all of these suggestions because I can’t get to your online texts and am curious to know more about your world. You may address all these issues there.

First of all, thank you for taking your time to write all this. A constructive comment like this is exactly what I am looking for :) I've worked on the material for several years, and although I've played Redskies with friends this is the first time I present it to others. It's a whole lot easier when you sit around a table with players allowing you to answer all their questions, but boiling down all the atmosphere and info in a brief post for "outsiders" is the real challenge. As for the site problems, I haven't had any problems yet, so I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble reaching my site. I checked the links myself and they work find for me. The site is pure html, no java or flash so that shouldn't cause trouble, but I'll ask my friend who helped me design it and see if he can think of anything that might cause problems.

Gjurons/The Regno/Khalens: need a little more info on these things.

I see the lack of thorough explanations here, so I'll try and answer some of your questions and in the meantime I'll work on a new presentation to fill out the gaps. Gjurons are a foreign civilization who travelled to Redskies via some sort of planar teleportation like the Novines did. (see further explanation below). The Regno (from latin Regnum) is the name of the Novine Empire which is later destroyed by the Gjurons. I haven't explained much about Khalens here either, so let me just give them a comment as well. Where the Gjurons are rather alien and hostile, Khalens look more like humans and act as a close ally, almost like a sister culture. Their skin is bronze-like and they have red-brown hair. When The Regno was formed, the Khalens founded a political and military union further south. This is called The Concordia and it's like an alliance of several independent civilizations, most of which are settlers from other worlds.

“Discovered” and “Alien”: Is this a space faring people or did they discover some kind of planar/teleportation travel? Or is this a previously undiscovered area of the earth?

A main theme in Redskies is the Pilgrimage, a term I use for planar travels. The Novines used this now forgotten science to reach Redskies and so did a great number of civilizations including the Blonians, Khalens and Gjurons. It might be a good idea if I stressed this a bit more, so people don't get confused, I'll keep that in mind :) As for the discovering of The New World and the Alien thing. I want to give the impression that the Novines more or less stumbled on this new world, they believe that their god lead them there and since it is now 1300 years since they arrived the knowledge of how exactly to cross into other worlds have been forgotten. When I use the term "alien" I mostly refer to the Pilgrims, I.E. the non-native civilizations who journeyed to Redskies via planar travels.

When you say wretched Christians, do you mean they were desperate and in a wretched condition, or that they behaved atrociously towards locals they found? Where they running from trouble or are they looking to dominate? I think that needs to be answered here.

All three actually. As I explain in the section of Novine History on the site, what was later to become the Novines was a small group of european scholars who somehow came across the knowledge of planar travels. They were hunted by the inquisition in Europe, so when they escaped and found their way to Redskies they were both desperate and in a wretched condition. Imagine a group of medieval refugees ending up in a completely alien world, vast rainforests all around them, and no way to get back ;) The Novines then began to build up a new life in Redskies and as they came across natives their power and influence began to grow. I've tried to depict the Novines as both bad and good guys here. They represent the opposition to some of the more cruel and "evil" races like the Gjurons and the Gleyks, but on the other hand they are also greedy, arrogant and dominant towards some of the less developed civilizations.

Confusion: You said the Novines where conquered by the Gjurons, but in the next paragraph you say they were saved by Khalens. So are they subjugated and controlled by the invaders and a few Novines escaped to the south or what? Did the Gjurons get driven away?

To give you a brief idea of what happens to the Novines. Some time in the early 1200 A.N (human timeline) The Regno (Novines) and the Gjuron Empire have both grown to a point where there's just not room for both of them. Both are prosperous trade nations and to make a long story short, the Gjurons launch a surprise attack on the Novines, wiping out the entire imperial family and occupying the Regno. Now their ally to the south, the Khalens leading the great union of the Concordia dispatch their army to liberate the partially destroyed Regno. They successfully drive off the Gjuron invaders, and instead of saying "here you go, Novines, you're free now" they more or less force the remaining Novine leaders to sign a treaty allowing the Concordia and their Senate to take over. From this day the Novines are "under administration" by their "bigger brother", the Khalens which is one of the important conflicts in Redskies. The surviving Novines have become very religious and although they generally support the Concordia many of them wish to be free of the union and restore The Regno.

That is a brilliant idea. I've already done a lot of "first hand impressions" where Novine explorers tell us about the foreign cultures they encounter in Redskies, so presenting the general atmosphere through a single person is definately something I will look into.

I’m only making all of these suggestions because I can’t get to your online texts and am curious to know more about your world. You may address all these issues there.

Again thanks for the interest, I've tried to answer as much as I can here and I hope you will get access to my website. If not, feel free to bombard me with some more questions, I'm happy to reply :)

I need help ( )

Postby Ddbill on Thu Jan 24, 2008 5:13 am

Alright, i know i havent taken much time in posting on this site, but ive been really busy lately with moving. But im back "again" so, now im requesting help. I know im not one to talk about other rp forums, but i am part of them and i would like help from rpers on here. No, im not trying to steal anyone, all im trying to do is get some recruits for other forums so that they live. Im trying to help some friends.

http://z3.invisionfree.com/Dragon_Rider ... hp?act=idx

This site is an "Eregon" Spin off and is in desperate need of help. It has a massive lack of people and all round stop in rping. So if you can help there, it would be great. Not an Eregon fan? Join for the anime! There is an anime section to the site and as long as the site has active meembers, that would be awsome.

http://z4.invisionfree.com/Zombious/index.php?act=idx

This site offers a dark and light perspective to roleplaying. Be a creature of the dark and stalk humans around, or be a Hero of light and defend humans against the living dead. Or just be a regular person, out to change their own ways. This site is solely for the general forum base player. Generl chats, game chats, roleplay, and just about anything you want. If your not a big rper, then join for the game discussions or other general discussions. This site is lacking in active members and is also lacking in total activeness. I will admit, the last time something was posted in the site, was in august of last year. We need help.

Those are the sites i need help with. Please, if anyone is interested in joining, do so. We need the activeness!!

Cyberpunk RP MUD - In-Development ( )

Postby LebenOjanen on Tue Jan 29, 2008 9:05 pm

Greets all!

I just wanted to make a small announcement for the community. I'm working on creating a Cyberpunk RP MUD and I'm looking for a small yet solid group of people who would be willing to help me test things out and add more features. If anyone is interested just send me a message at LebenOjanen@gmail.com or AIM as LebenOjanen. Check below for a little detail on MUDs and mine in general. I understand this may be a bit odd for these forums, but this is one of the strongest communities I've seen and I think asking here would be my best first-choice. All of the information below is completely optional and just for interested people/groups. I can promise you will hear no more of this on the forums. Thanks for your time.

==What is a Mud?
For those who don't know what MUDs are, they're pretty much a text based MMO that you access with either telnet or a MUD client of some sort. The 4 most popular in the world regularly have 300+ players on at once. Most are usually free but there are some that try to charge. Mine will be free, because I'm cheap like that.

==Clients
Some clients, like telnet, are very basic, while some are very advanced, supporting very nice features. An example of this would be color. Some clients support it and some don't (99% do). The engine supports MXP(Formatting and ingame-images), MSP(Sounds) and a few other features so having a decent client does wonders. If anyone is interested, FREE MUD clients are available, and work just fine.

==My MUD
I'm a gamer at heart and decided to create the engine just to see if I could do it, because Cyberpunk is my most favorite Genre. I came to a crossroads where I could turn it into any other MUD, where you make a character then just go out and grind, or I could turn it into an RP MUD. I chose RP. I decided to present the world to an interested party (you guys) and let them help me make it fun to play in. And if not, then I can recode whatever needs to be fixed or added.

=Features
Right now, I've got a few of, what I think are interesting RP features:
Cellphones are in the game, and have unique numbers for direct chat. I've also added radios for communication or bugging a room.
As of now there are a few implants, I can add pretty much anything else and I'm looking for ideas.
The world supports dynamic weather.
There is a fully working subway system.
Players will soon be able to purchase or rent ingame housing, actually giving you a room to modify to your liking.
I just want to say that soon I'll be adding a RP Experience system soon after I finish designing it. It will let you promote one from your group to GM status, allowing them limited control over the world. Optionally Official RP sessions can be logged and reviewed for the allowance of RP Experience, allowing player perks such as vehicles, better housing, custom items ,etc.

So if you're at this part then you're obviously interested. Please let me know at either LebenOjanen@gmail.com or over AIM as LebenOjanen. Thanks!

Um, I'm assuming this is the place to hopefully add some sites?
I have two that will hopefully interest some of the players here.

The first is Harry Potter based, set years after the books. http://www.nextincantation.com

The other is fairly self explanatory, TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles). Still needing a couple of canons. http://tmntrpg.com

Thank you.

Connecting to the IRC Chat:

You may frequently hear of talk about the "IRC chat" in this website's chat. It refers to our rooms in the SurrealChat network. That is the usual location for most roleplaying regarding the Terra plotline; that is to say, one large part of the Multiverse, the all-encompassing roleplay linking all types and forms of roleplaying together.

A few warnings before you proceed further:

+This chat is NOT affiliated with RPGateway. It was at one time, but has since been unaffiliated, and simply remains the hangout of the regulars.

+This chat often contains mature content. If you or your parent/guardian cannot handle your viewing of this, do not bother coming.

+This chat does not operate under the standard rules of RPGateway. There is often flaming and the like -- this chat is ruled by Administrator/Moderator (known as Operators in there) discretion, and a moderator may remove you from the chat at any time, for any reason, and may punish the same offense in many different ways, or not at all.. Generally, we're accepting, but stupidity is rarely tolerated. That's not to say stupid conversations, we find ourselves in those often, but true stupidity -- which is again, at our discretion -- is usually frowned upon. And when I say frowned upon, I mean the user is usually ridiculed, flamed, and banned.

I hope these warnings haven't scared you off, it's truely an enjoyable place. If you have common sense and a level head, you should get along just fine. That said, here are the steps for connecting:

(If you already have a chat client and are familiar with connecting, than the information is: Host: irc.surrealchat.net Rooms: #GWing, #GWingOOC)

Step 1. Download mIRC

NOTE:Optionally, pick up XChat, but if you do this, I can't really help you -- I have no experience with it, so you'll have to read what I write here and try to apply it there.

NOTE 2: It says you have a 30-day trial and then you must pay, but in actuality, when your time is up, it merely flashes a screen at you for about ten seconds to register your copy, then goes away and everything's normal.

Step 2. Open and install the client.

Step 3. Click "Continue" on the first window that comes up.

Step 4. A window should pop up, fill out the information on the front however you want. Neither a real name or email is required. The nickname is the username you wish to use (Alphanumeric only, no spaces, no funky symbols), and the alternative is the name to be used if your first is already in use. DO NOT CLICK "OK" WHEN YOU ARE DONE WITH THIS STEP.

Step 5. On the left side of the form you just filled out should be a series of options. Click on the "Servers" option. Click the "Add" button.

Description: Whatever you want, something like RPGateway, GWing, etc.
IRC Server: irc.surrealchat.net

Ignore the rest, click "Add," then "Connect To Server."

NOTE: There are a few things with "quotes" and <brackets> around them. Do NOT include the quatation marks or brackets when you type these in.

Step 6. Once all the messages finish flashing by, one of two things should happen.
A. Within 30 or so seconds, you receive one or more messages asking you to identiy or change your nickname. This means your chosen nickname has been taken, and you need to pick a new one. Type "/nick <your new nickname>" Once you have a nickname that isn't taken, proceed to step B.
B. Nothing occurs after 30 or so seconds, in which case, you want to register your nickname. Type "/ns register <whatever password you want> <your real email address>"

Step 7. Type in "/join #GWing" and "/join #GWingOOC"

That's it, for the most part. After this, when you open the mIRC client again, you need only click the "connect" icon up top (furthest on the left, looks like a lightning bolt) and, once the messages finish flashing by, type in "/ns identify <your previously chosen password>" There are a couple more additional steps you may wish to take, the first of which I HIGHLY recommend.

Optional Step 1. Click on your Options icon. It's the 2nd from the left up top, looks like a hammer next to a folder. Once the window pops up, click the "Options" option (why they have an Options group in the Options menu, I do not know, but click it). Click "Perform..." and, in the window that pops up, check "Enable Perform On Connect." In the blank box just below it, type the following:

/ns identify <the password you chose earlier>
/join #GWing
/join #GWingOOC

Click "OK" on that screen and "OK" on the Options menu behind it. What you've just done is set the program to automatically identify you and send you into our two usual hotspots. Remember this step, for you can add more to it when you are more familiar with the program and its commands.

Optional Step 2. This one is short and sweet. To change the colors in mIRC (I personally like a black background with green text and yellow actions), simply click the Colors icon, which is the 8th from the left, and looks like a bunch of differently colored crayons. Click the specific text you want to change the color of, then click the color you want from the list of them below it.

And that's the whole shebang! Enjoy.

Hey! I used to love rp'ing at avariel, many moons ago. I went on hiatus from the net for a fairly long period, and when I came back Avariel seemed pretty much dead, sadly. Razor's Edge Needs Your Help ( )

Postby Superlagg on Sat Apr 26, 2008 4:42 pm

Image Image

Welcome to the Edge.

Edge City. A fortress of glass and steel fifty miles deep and two thousand feet high. They say if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. And brother, ain’t it the truth.

But you gotta play it cool. You gotta be smart. Because this city’ll eat you alive if you give it half a chance. It’s a jungle out there, and you’re either the predator or the prey.

Borgs. Jokers. Freaks. Psikers. Sorcerers. Druids. It’s a whole world of trouble on those mean streets. Don’t expect Civil Protection to come bail you out when the shit hits the fan. In this city, you’re on your own.

But if you’re smart enough – if you’re good enough – then you just might make it. Play your cards right, kiddo, and there just might be a pile of Daks with your name on ‘em. It’s a tough city, all right – but there are fortunes to be made, and that’s the damn truth.

So... are you in?

What is Razor's Edge? It's a forum-based text RPG that was created by two of our GMs, Kytt and Pilgrim_Shadow. That's the simple description of it. What's the complex one?

Well, Razor's Edge is a game that takes alot of aspects drawn from generic tabletop pen and paper RPGs and brings them to life through the magic of creativity and text-based goodness.

The game takes place in Edge City, the last metropolis. A mecca of balance between the three races that inhabit what is known as the world- the Teknoholden, the Forgam, and the Mooto.

In the beginning there were a race of people called (for lack of a better word) the Founders. Their entire society was based on using technologies that incorporated not only the kind of stuff you'd see in a futuristic society, but magic as well. At some point, for no known reason, the Founders left- destination unknown. They left behind nothing of their legacy but the ruins that now line the levels of the Undercity. The people that came and built Edge City know not how they came to be, but only that they are currently. However, not understanding the Founder technology, they began to split into two groups.

The Teknoholden are a race of (as it may be obvious) technologically advanced people, believing that it was the technological aspects of the Founders' society that was the driving force. They have cast off any sense of the old ways in favor of a life in the fast lane, surrounded by towers of glass and steel. They live fueled by coffee, drugs, and money.

The Forgam, on the other hand, believe that it was the magical aspects of the Founders' society that was the driving force. They live in more simple ways, and practice old traditions and old magics. They live inspired by the pursuit of knowledge and power.

As these two factions grew, they began to clash. Forgam and Teknoholden were suddenly strange bedfellows in a rapidly shrinking world. It was the coming together of these two peoples that created the third race, the Mooto.

The Mooto were created by the toxic excesses of the Forgam's potions and magic, mixed with the toxic waste created by the Teknoholden's so-called advanced society. They were once normal people- Forgam, Teknoholden... no one really cares anymore. The toxic waste acted as a catalyst and sped up the mutations that the potions and magic caused, and the potions and magic acted as a catalyst and sped up the mutations that the toxic waste caused. Regardless of who started what, the people affected began to see their very DNA being altered. They would then have children along the same lines, mutants every one of them. In the more recent years, activists for the Mooto cause have lobbied, seeing as the term "mutant" sounded like somewhat of an insult. These days, the correct way to address these people is either by their proper name- Mooto, the slang shortening- Moot, or simply "Metahuman".

These three races now all share Edge City, each group clearly preferring one section or another, but intertwining nevertheless.

There are political factions, military forces, paramilitary forces, police forces, crime syndicates, and street gangs, all constantly in shift around the ever-moving world of Razor's Edge. This game is a year and a half in the making, and I promise that once you get into it you will not be disappointed (if you like text-based RPGs, anyway).

Check out the forum, look around, download and thumb through the Player's Guide, and I hope to see you on the Edge.

We are now seeking GMs to allow the game to continue after the previous GMs had left due to real life. If you are interested, send an eMail to mountainjew@gmail.com or an AIM message to username Kytt. We have three positions currently open.

Its also recommended you read the player guides, the Equipment Guide and the Player Guide, though the Equipment guide is only recommended.

Even though it is one single thread there, the RP there is pretty awesome and if you feel like you lack RP's even though this whole place is filled with them: http://forums.mysticsoftware.net/viewforum.php?f=11

Re: Places To Roleplay ( )

I looked at the first page and this wasn't mentioned!

bb.surrealtwilight.com

Everyone knows everyone else there, so everyone feels welcome, and there's this nice newcomer-full member system that ensures that all our roleplays have a certain quality (you know how you feel when some weird person pops up at your roleplay and types one-liners and such). All joiners automatically start off as newcomers, restricted to the newbies' realm for roleplaying and OOC for the moment, till they chalk up 6 IC posts, then they apply for full membership and when 3 Kindly Scholars Approve (they're much like the Support Group around here), you're a full member! They'll also point out which parts of roleplaying you're good at and what you must improve, which really helps.

Plus, the mods there are totally specialised. There's Admin, Kindly Scholar, OOC Mod, RP Mod and CW Mod to take on different parts of S*T, so that corruption is minimised. In addition, the mod selection is quite transparent. Every half a year or so, an admin will start a Hiring thread and interested parties (must be member for at least 3 months) will post their application for moderator. Then, those that make it through the first phase get an interview, usually via MSN or AIM, and only a few are chosen everytime. The very best.

Sorry about all that babbling.
Signing off, Affy.

Re: Places To Roleplay ( )

Alrighty, someone said it was ok to post advertisements, so here I go. ^_^

I'll give a small introduction to myself, though. I'm Sai Rhavan, and I come from a small Invisionfree board by the name of Velius. I'm an Administrator there, and I guess it's kind of weird for an Admin to be out advertising. Yet here I am. The site is an amazing place to roleplay, and the stories we have currently active are nothing short of amazing. And if I might say so, the people here are really friendly. This might be attributed to the fact that this is still a small board, but hey! At least we know each other. XD

I shall now move on to the story of the world of Velius.

Earth. A wonderful place that we all call home. In the near future, a group of scientists made amazing breakthroughs in various fields, and on December 21st, 2010, created the impossible. The first human clones.

Everything was going well, until one by one the clones disappeared. They found them later, near a pile of freshly skinned human bones. The clones had reverted to cannibalism, it seemed. And those who escaped their lunges and feral attacks found themselves becoming sick from some strange mutation they carried within their blood.

They called it The Bloodrush.

Fast forward 16 years. The Bloodrush, a disease that turns humans into creatures reminiscent of I Am Legend or 28 Days Later monsters have brought humanity to its knees. It seems all is lost.

But here is a twist to the story based forum board.

Conceive the thought of multiple layered universes. The opposite of Earth's being a world by the name of Velius. A world of beauty, of vibrancy. A word with fantastical creatures and races, alive. Such a hard contrast to what Earth has become.

Neither world knows of the other's existence, yet there is a connection. One that both worlds are soon to find out about.

Alright, there's the gist of the story. A roleplaying board seemingly split into two sections. It's a steep contrast, a foil in the literary sense, and it works amazingly. For those looking for sci fi/modern based roleplaying, there is Earth. For those of us who love fantasy, Velius has its doors open as always, waiting for the next adventure.

I know the site is small, but we're still growing, going through new changes such as a new store system. We would love for you to join, and hope to see you there!

IM me via MSN if there are any questions. ^_^

Edit:

On a side note, there's no proof that I forgot to put a link to the site... >.>
