Chapter 1: Chosen by Birth

Scrap City, one of the major stronghold cities against the Defiled, many people have been migrating here recently after fleeing their homes from the Defiled. It was known as one of the largest barricaded cities in the region. Along the way they were fighting back the tears of seeing their dear families, friends, and pokemon turn into the “Cursed Ones.” This world is slowly becoming lifeless, due to the loss of large amounts of pokemon that keep the environment alive and vibrant forests are being to die out, grass has stopped growing in most areas, and there have been a large increase in Defiled attacks forcing people to lose their homes. Humanity and pokemon alike are on the brink of destruction.

In spite of all this darkness a small ray of light shines. Young children born with special marks on their bodies, and pokemon also born with special symbols have started to gather at Scrap city. These children and their pokemon are the small beacons of hope that started to motivate people and show that all hope hasn’t been lost. In the 40 years since the Defiled started attacking this might be the one and only chance to take a stand.

The special children were all gathered in for a meeting with the Salvation Army, a special force that keeps cities safe at the cost of their lives, to discuss a plan of action. It was shown during one mishap that one born with a birthmark and their bonded pokemon have the power to destroy a Defiled completely. Thus, they forced the children to journey into the world and fight the Defiled and figure out a way to rid the world of these monsters forever lest they doom all life in this world.

Today was the day that everyone was about to set out on their journey. There was a fair number of special chosen so the city thought it was about time they set out to fulfill their destiny. Each of them was given supplies including a map of the region, food, water, three oran berries, and three potions.

Someone was appointed the leader out of all of them, and this person went by the name of Hideo Sonoma. It’s not like he wanted to be chosen, it was just a complete accident that he managed to kill a defiled on the outskirts of the city. He had no choice, they wanted someone to be a leader and they chose him, whether he can rally everyone together or whether they walk all over him was out of his control.

The meeting place was small area near the exit barricade that were being guarded by some armored soldiers and some Mightyena. The small area was close to a supply shop, incase anyone forgot something along with some park benches. There were also street lights that have long since stopped functioning, their bulbs charred black from the outside. Electricity was a precious resource so all the power generated by electric type pokemon in the city were used to keep things like hospitals and pokemon centers open and operational.

Hideo was the first to arrive about and hour early, which made sense being the forced leader of the group. Like usual he was just wearing his dark blue hooded shirt, some black jeans, and some sneakers along with his backpack of supplies and his rapier in a sheath attached to his belt. He sat with his Turtwig on the nearby bench looking sullen. He was going to miss the protection of the city going off to fend for his life for the good of all life. Synth saw that his partner was had a sad look on his face, jumping on his lap, startling Hideo, he said, “Don’t worry! As long as I am with you everything is going to be fine. I’m going to stop those monsters even if it costs me my life.” Taken aback by Synth’s words he smiled and said, “You’re right I should be a little positive we are trying to save everyone.” Time was passing and he wondered when the others would arrive and whether they were are restless as he was. They all met briefly once before at the special meeting so he didn’t really have a chance to meet anyone which worried him since he knew little to nothing about anyone going on this journey.

[Roche Manor, Scrap City]

"I'm up, Jamison," Perry groaned, struggling out from under the covers and squinting up at the stately figure looming through the drapes. "I'm up, I promise."

"Very good, sir. I have laid on breakfast in your sitting room. Eggs benedict, a sausage salver, grilled tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, a rack of toast and some peppers, sir, with some berries for Celestis, as per usual. Butterfield has laid out your clothes, and I have taken the liberty of providing you with a small pack." He coughed discreetly.

"Your mother has decreed the family fortune is at your disposal on your..." he faltered slightly "...journey, as you well know, and all the family acquaintances have been made aware of what is happening." Jamison's eyes were dark with worry.

"I know you're doing all you can," Perry replied, stalking across the acres of polished floor. "But right now I need a bath. And tell Venus to stay out, this time!"

"Your mother's Vaporeon goes wherever she wills, sir, as you well know. I shall do my best, though."

Washed, dressed and fully fed, Perry left - after many rather tearful goodbyes - and made his way to the meeting point with a sigh. All his family's influence and power hadn't been able to stop the Salvation Army. Oh well. Perry was quite pragmatic about this, but that didn't mean he had to like it. Celestis nestled in his hair - the blasted Pokemon had stolen his hair tie again, he thought fondly - as he strode into the lowest district of the city, looking uneasily at the forlorn lights and tumbledown surrounds.

Ah. There was their so-called 'glorious leader', slumped on a bench with a Turtwig nearby.

"Mister Sonoma? A pleasure to make your acquaintance, I'm sure." His voice was precise and carried a pronounced upper-town accent as he stared down at the scruffily-dressed boy in front of him.

"Come on, Ryuu, don't wanna be late do we?" Maria said, adjusting her hat with one hand, and patting her leg with the other, calling her Absol to her. The creature trotted over and looked up at her expectantly.

The two of them were on their way to a meeting place, some Salvation Army Maria and her partner had been called to. Not like she really cared, this was just a minor annoyance and her somewhat bored mood just made it that much more inconvenient.

But, whether she liked it or not, she had to go. As the two of them walked, Ryuu, her absol, kept taking glances up at her, as he always did. He was such a loyal partner to her, so much so that it shocked her sometimes how he defended her. How he had defended her when... No, she thought, I refuse to think like that.

Upon arriving, the two of them sat on the ground a distance away from the boys who had already arrived. Maria kept her legs crossed, as she normally did, and Ryuu's head in her lap was a comfort near the strangers.

Well, at least I'm not alone. She thought to herself, a smile gracing her face.
"Sometimes you just have to pick up the pieces and move on." -Me

Jake shook his head as he slipped a black t-shirt on, soon pulling on a black jacket. He looked over at Melody, his Dratini and smiled lightly.

"Mel, time to get up, darlin'. We gotta head out and meet up with the others, whoever they are."

Melody opened her eyes and jumped up, wrapping around Jake's torso and shoulders.

"It's too early, a ghrà. We should still be asleep."

"Aye to that, but they did want us all. You can sleep while I walk. I know you would like that."

Melody smiled lightly, looking at Jake.

"Well, since you offered, I guess I could take you up on it."

Jake laughed and walked along, rubbing Melody's tail which was wrapped around his right arm. Melody yawned as they approached a group of people near the exit. Jake could see a Turtwig sitting on a male's lap, an Absol standing near a female, and a Ralts near another male. Melody examined each one and looked at Jake.

"I feel sorry for the female. She has to be surrounded by guys instead of having another female with her."

Jake laughed and rubbed Melody's head. He approached the male with the Turtwig, smiling gently.

"I'm Jake and this is Melody. You're Hideo Sonoma, right? And these two are?"

Melody flicked Jake in the back of the head with her tail.

"I think you could be more formal, Jake."

"Mel, I don't wanna be here anymore than you do. Formality is out the door if we're going to be teaming up with others."
"Is it really the darkness we feel? Or is it the light and love embracing us?"

"Ahhhh" Hiro woke to find a Spinarak sitting on his face.
"Hahahahahah"
"Thats really not funny, Creep" he said with mock aggression, before smiling and jumping out of bed.
"It is a litle funny" The little Pokemon disagreed. "But seriously.. Three times in one day, I think I just broke my record"
"Congratulations. Now come on, we're probably already late" he straightened his cap and held his hand out for his Spinarak smiling. Creep nodded once and climbed up his arm to perch on top of Hiro's head and they headed for the door to go and meet up with the rest of the team that had been assembled to save the world...
"But seriously admit it.. Threes times is pretty impressive" "Can't you just be quiet like a normal Pokemon"

...

Heading down the path, running full pace, towards the meeting point "I better not be late because of you" Hiro said "What do you mean 'beacuse of me'. I was the one that woke you up" "Well you could have woken me up earlier, Creep" Creep shot a string of web down at Hiros ankles as he ran, he tripped, stumbled, but caught his balance before he fell "Hey!" Hiro yelled at his spinarak "You deserved it" "Ha, ok, ok. No more messing around though, we seriously are running late" and at that he was back to his previous speed. "We aren't much further away"

Hiro turned the last corner and saw three people, two guys and a girl, and three pokemon, a Turtwig sitting on the lap of our new 'leader', the other guy
had a small Ralts, and the girl sitting a little away was with her Absol. The two guys were closest so he came to a stop near them.
"Hey! Sorry I got.. er.. Held up"
"He's lying he slept in"
"Quiet you. Anyway my names Hiro, with an 'i' not an 'e' but either ones fine" he said with a small laugh at his own joke.
"Lame"
"The big boys are talking Creep, go to sleep or something"
"Better than hearing another joke like that" Creep tucked his head in and pretended to snore.
"Ha" he smiled fondly at the little spider and turned back to the others "nice to meet you properly." He nodded once to the other guy standing near him, He waved at the girl sitting by herself and smiled "care to join us?" and last of all turned to the appointed leader of the group "And your the Boss" Hiro inclined his head and dipped a little in a mock bow "So when do we leave?"

Maria glanced up at the sound of the Dratini's voice, comfortable smile fading when she realized that the little dragon meant her.

"Ryuu," She muttered as the Absol began to stir from his position beside her, "Calm down, he's not dangerous. No need to worry over him."

Ryuu glanced up at her, nodded his head once, and layed back down.

"Good boy," She murmured, stroking his head.

Melody looked over at the girl who had said Ryuu.

"First off, it's a she, ma'am. Secondly, I didn't mean no disrespect. I was actually agreeing with what you feel like. Having to be surrounded by all these guys, ma'am. Just seems a little unfair to us."

Jake looked over at the girl that Melody was apologizing to and looked up as a newcomer with a Spinarak on his head.

"Melody, don't be disrespecting others."

Jake walked over to the girl and did as much of a bow as he could. It was kind of difficult with a Dratini wrapped all around his body.

"Sorry about that. A ghrà never knows when she should settle down and be quiet. I'm Jake and this little one is Melody."

He stood back from the girl a little bit, not wanting to get attacked by her Absol. He didn't want any sort of tension when they left to save the world.

"Now, be nice, Jake. It isn't my fault she's the only female human around here."

Jake dropped Melody and shook his head.

"Sorry about her. She was always... this way since I met her."

A sigh escaped the boy’s lips, the others were starting to arrive. In his mindset he probably thought that everyone really doesn’t think much of him but he was forced to take the role of leader, the Salvation Army’s will was law. They are the only ones that can save the world but he wished that would have at least voted on it…

The first one to arrive was some snobby rich kid, his family is pretty famous in the city, Hideo probably thought this guy was going to demean everyone and cause trouble, but this was probably just in his head. He was raised on a farm so he couldn’t really tell at all what it was like to be a rich person. His Ralts seemed to act like a rich person as well but it probably can’t be helped to live in that type of environment.

The second was a girl was somewhat quiet all she did was smile and sit on the ground. She didn’t look like she would cause any trouble. Her Absol was mysterious to say the least and seemed very protective.

The next one to arrive looked dreary while his Dartini felt like the exact opposite. This man already voiced his concerns of not wanting to be there but he also seemed normal.

Another male came after that with a spider-like pokemon he seemed energetic to say the least but he was talkative. But something stuck out about him, his personality just seemed irritating and the way he talked with his partner seemed mean.

With the four that arrived so far and his first impressions he couldn’t wait to meet the others….like he has a choice. Hideo stood up from the bench holding his Turtwig in his arms like a child. “Good morning everyone, as you are aware I am Hideo Sonoma, the one who was…uh… forced to lead everyone. If there is anything you want to know about me please don’t hesitate to ask. I already thought about where we are heading to first but we have to wait for the others to arrive before we leave, so um…Nice to meet all of you!”

His turtwig fidgeted in his arms and broke free, climbing up his shoulder and standing upon Hideo’s head. Hideo winced a little when the Turtwig stood up on his head. “Hello everyone I am Synth, you all better be ready for this! No wimping out when we leave. It’s us against them and you all better not hold me back! Now that we got that taken care of everyone must give a hundred and ten percent on this! We are the only ones who can save the world so no slacking off!”

After finishing his drill sergeant like speech Hideo was flustered and said, “Please ignore him…he’s just excited to go on this trip... for some reason…” He sighed again wondering if everyone could get along. The sparks of personality friction are already starting to go off.

Perry turned as further people began to arrive, Celestis burrowing further into his hair. He sighed, and then pasted on a small smile.

"Allow me to introduce myself," he said quietly to Jake, although his words were quite able to carry to the others. "Peregrine Roche. Lord Roche, if we're being formal." He smiled slightly more, and with a practiced shrug dislodged Celestis from his shoulder. "This is Celestis."

Quietly, to the little Pokemon, in the silent communication they both shared, he murmured, "Do say hello, dear. Be polite."

Very slowly, the little Ralts tilted her head back and shyly peeped up at the other humans. "Ralts," she said in greeting, and gave a little curtsey before scampering back up Perry's arm and back to the safety of his hair.

"She'll warm up a bit once she gets to know everyone," he said indulgently. "Do you have everything you think you'll need?" He addressed Hideo primarily, but again loud enough to carry to everyone else.

Melody looked over at the Turtwig who was standing on Hideo's head.

"You mean you expect us to break our backs to support you? Sorry, but I think this is a GROUP effort. Jake, was there any reason that he was chosen as leader?"

"Mel, darlin', stop being so disrespectful. He was forced as he so pertained. But... I think so far, he'll make a great leader. He's nervous about it. Which means he's nervous about leading us to our doom. So he's got my vote."

Jake walked up and held his hand out to Hideo.

"I may not wanna be here, but I am, so I'll do my part. The name's Jake and this one's Melody. If you want, I can teach you how to better control Synth there."

Jake and Melody turned to Perry and the Ralts and nodded curtly.

"I'll let you know now, Perry. I don't expect any formality in the field. If you haven't survived on the streets yet, you won't last long in a fight. The Defiled will have NO trouble killing you once they see you. Formality won't get you anything more than a death wish. Learn to fight."

Sure enough, as if he had trained, Jake pulled something out of his pocket and flicked his wrist, the small item extending into a full length bo staff.

"Melody and I have been facing the world. We're ready to fight for our lives."

Melody smiled and unraveled from around Jake's body, resting on his shoulders.

"A ghrà, don't spook off the poor two. We'll just have to watch them while they get used to it."

Jake shrugged, flicking his wrist and returning the small bo staff to his pocket. He turned and looked at the girl, who had remained quiet during this whole visit. Melody nudged Jake's cheek and Jake opened a silent link to her.

You like her.

Mel, darlin'. What am I gonna do? Tell her I ain't even met her and I like her.

Enough about liking her or not. You're going to do a lot of protecting her when it comes to it.

You know me too well, Mel.

Only you, a ghrà.

"Hideo, have you got everything you need?" Jake asked, looking to the leader.

Perry sighed. So Jake was going to be one of those. It didn't help in the least that he was taller than Perry, too."You are mistaking formality for courtesy, Jake," he replied coldly, reaching into his overrobe and producing, magician-like, an elaborately-chased knurl. He pointed it, though not in an overly-hostile way, at the man, the eight stubby barrels gleaming.

"Celestis does her level best to ensure that any enemy doesn't reach me, but in the unwelcome event of that actually occurring, Jake, I have no intention of screaming like a damsel in distress. If an eightball discharge at close range doesn't finish whatever it is off, however, I shall have to call a rock to brain it from behind, or, heaven forfend, rely on the rest of you to get it off me."

He contemplated using his rather unique talent to pluck the bo staff from the peasant's grasp, but after a moment of internal wrestling, decided against it. That particular talent could wait until later.

"To change the subject, you have a rather fine Dratini there, at least, unless I'm very much mistaken, which says something about your skills at caring for your Pokemon if not anything else about your character. Celestis tells me your Pokemon - Melody, wasn't it? - is happy with you, which I suppose is something to be thankful for. I'd rather not be blindsided by a rebellious Pokemon at a crucial point."

Jake raised an eyebrow at Perry.

"Mel, darlin', I do think he just told us he could handle his own in a battle. Sorry, Perry, but Mel and I don't trust people until they prove themselves."

Mel giggled and the sound seemed to echo in the open area. She wrapped herself around Jake's torso, looking at Perry.

"A knurl, huh? Nice weapon, Perry. I hope you have a nice little martial arts in that body of yours. Jake here relies on his bo staff as well as his body. But, I like to think of Jake as independent. And don't worry. If one of the Defiled get to you, Jake will have it off. A ghrà, i think he can prove himself in the field firsthand. Let's simmer down and relax."

Jake nodded, smiling lightly at Mel.

"Always did know what to say to relax me."

Jake sat down, crossing his legs and closing his eyes, mediating in the area. Mel kept herself wrapped around Jake's torso, ready to strike anyone that came near him while he mediated.

“Hey, who you accusing of being a slacker!?”

The loud yet squeaky voice which dripped with indignant expression came from a tiny Bunneary, who was frowning with a harsh stare directed at the equally loud Turtwig. Her hands were curled into fists and were pressed against her fluffy hips as she continued to glare at the grass type Pokemon like he had offended. Which, in a long winded way, he had.

“You better watch what your saying, Shellhead, before I come over there and show you my mean right hook! Then we’ll see who’s slackin-- Hey!”

The outrage rabbit was suddenly picked up off the ground and into the arms of a blonde young woman. She had a light flush across her porcelain cheeks, showing her clear embarrassment at her fluff ball friend’s behaviour towards the people who were going to be their companions for the journey. Offering an apologetic smile, Eri made eye contact with each and every human as her eyes swept over them while she spoke in a soft yet repentant tone.

“I’m so sorry if Pon gave you a fright then… She has a habit of popping into conversations out of no where. Trust me, I know all about it.”

The blonde smiled again, though it came out forced. Meanwhile, Pon was attempting to wiggle out of her partner’s arms, even going as far as pulling on Eri’s jumper and threatening to stretch it so it would look ugly. It was almost pitiful to watch her fruitless efforts; the blonde’s hold remained firm and the small smile never left her face. It was like Pon wasn’t even there to her.

“I’m Eri, by the way. I hope Pon hasn’t caused too much trouble in the few milliseconds she’s been around you guys. I promise you she isn’t always so rude and I hope we can all be friends, ‘kay?”

Suddenly Eri dropped down onto the balls of her feet and spoke to Synth directly, Pon still wriggling like a worm and screaming like a banshee. The young woman placed hand over the Bunneary’s mouth so the Turtwig could hear her speak.

“I hope Pon didn’t offended you with her name calling… She can be very inconsiderate when she’s riled up like this.”

Mel shook her head as Jake opened his eyes to see a young blonde woman with a Bunneary in her arms, talking to Synth. Jake stood up, Mel looking up at the lady. Jake walked over and held his hand down to her.

"The name's Jake, and this is Mel. Seems like you got a handful with that Bunneary, don't you?"

Mel giggled, the sound of it was sweet and innocent.

"So far, the Absol, the Ralts, and I are the only one's that aren't a handful."

"Mel." The warning was easy but serious to the Dratini.

"Sorry about her. She's always this way."

Perry contemplated spiky Jake Marshall silently for a moment or two. "Well, I can't fault you in your reasoning," he said lightly, turning away. "Seeing is believing, and I'm reserving my own judgement on your skills, after all."

His voice was considerably more gentle as he addressed the Dratini. "Martial arts?" He smiled, thinking of the psychic forces he could marshal. "Of a sort, I suppose. I prefer my fighting at a distance, which is probably why I shoot things instead of cutting them up or bopping them on the head, a la your master, but I have some skills in that department. Can I tempt you with a Mago Berry? Celestis loves the things." He looked up. "And the Bunneary, too?"

Mel giggled even more, shaking her head.

"Sorry, cara, I'm not into a Mago berry. I prefer special food that Jake cooks for me. Speaking of which, Jake. I'm hungry."

Jake laughed and sat down, pulling a pot from his pack with a small set of ingredients.

"Perry, some dragon types, like Mel here, prefer the delicious taste of meat. Which I sort of give her. I give her a sort of salad, meat mixed in with some lettuce leaves and such. It's delicious to her, and provides all the necessary minerals she'll need."

He mixed together the ingredients, setting about cooking it lightly.

"I can give some to... Pon, the Bunneary, and to everyone else, The Absol, Synth, The Turtwig, The Spinarak, and to your Ralts. Of course, all their free choice willing."

Perry smiled politely and Celestis emerged from his hair and promenaded down his outstretched arm to the sweet treat.

"I can always tempt her out with a Mago," he smiled, and inclined his head as the little Ralts began to munch on the sweet treat, face blissful. "Though she'd turn her nose up at meat, I'm afraid. We did offer it once - she ran a mile. But I thank you for your offer - most kind." It might well have been a peace offering, but Perry remained prudently wary, just in case.

He approached the girl with the Bunneary carefully. "Peregrine Roche. Pleased to make your acquaintance, madam. You have quite the..." he cast around for the polite word "...spirited Bunneary there, don't you?"

“Oh, well, I…” Just as Eri straightened up and removed her hand from Pon’s mouth to… Shake Jake’s hand? Let him kiss it? She wasn’t quite sure what he was doing, if she was honest. It only took a split second for Pon to wriggle out of her partner’s grasp, clamber onto her shoulder and then use her beanie hat’s tassles like a rope and get on top of her head, pushing the beanie hat Eri was wearing over her face.

“Don’t you go calling me a handful, matey! I’ll be more then just a handful for you in a minute!”

Pon bounced on her toes on Eri’s head, putting up her fists like she was in a boxing ring. Her partner attempted to adjust her hat with the Bunneary still atop it.

“P-Pon… Could you get off my head for just… One… Second.” Managing to get the hat on straight enough, her hair came out in static puffs around her face. While she then started to comb the strands back down into place, she noticed Jake was staring to unpack his things. So soon? They hadn’t even set off yet…

“In case you hadn’t noticed, Einstein. I’m a rabbit! A vegetarian!”

“Pon…” Eri let out a small sigh, wishing her partner would just calm down for five minutes. Then suddenly another boy had approached her, though his well postured stride was a little hesitant. His tone and way of speaking was very proper, to say the least. Eri felt a little self conscious about replying, though it didn’t matter, as Pon beat her to the punch.

“Hey! My name is Pon, not Bunneary! And I’m not ‘spirited’ or whatever you said! I ain’t got no religion!” The rabbit Pokemon drawled. It was usually what happened to your accent when you lived in a large family located near a farm.

“That’s not what he meant by spirited, Pon. It means you very… Energetic. In your case, it means with a hint of aggresion too.” Eri wanted to face palm, but decided against it. Instead she tried to stand up straight and appear with as much ladylike decorum as she could as a country bumpkin with working class parents.

“Eri… Eri Fuuoka. But I guess I already said that, didn’t I?” The blonde released a nervous laugh as she attempted to backtrack what she had just said, wishing a hole in the ground would swallow her up and spit her out somewhere else. Once again, her smile was a tad forced out, like she was being tortured inside. Which wasn’t too far from the truth.

Jake nodded, having taken a quick grasp of Eri's hand and shaking it firmly. Melody wiggled down his body, sitting in politeness while she waited for him to finish. He opened a silent link with her and continued to cook.

"What do you think so far, Mel, darlin'?"

"The... Pon is very energetic. Perry's Ralts will make a fine fighter and team player. Synth, definitely not the right role for a leader Pokemon. Absol, I don't know. The Spinarak, again, I don't know. Hideo, he's going to be great, as you said. Perry... he'll make a good friend. I believe we should befriend him. Eri... She'll do good... If she can control that Pon of hers. Everyone else... I don't know yet. Sorry I can't be of more help to you, a ghrà."

"Alright. We'll make amends with Perry and Eri."

As Mel sat and ate her food with a slow pace, Jake approached Perry and held his hands out.

"No hard feelings, I hope, Perry? I would be honored to fight alongside you in battle."

He looked to Eri and watched her for a moment.

"And you, Eri. Even though, with your Pon there, I don't think a lot of us will see any action. She'll be busy killing them all. And Pon, you may be energetic, but I think you and Mel will get along pleasantly."

Mel looked up at Jake.

"Jake?"

"She seems to be energetic, Mel, darlin'. Let's see how she is in a fight."
