Sarah-Jane looked at her list one last time before crumpling it up and throwing it in the garbage. Well an attempt at throwing it, it merely fell on the floor two feet away from the basket. She had written her list over a hundred times, each time adding something new to the list.

She laid her head back into the comforts of her pillow and started picking at the light switch dangling just above her. It was only a few days before she was able to go home, and then how much longer until she returned to that hospital bed? She may as well sell her little apartment in the city and move in here and pay rent. No doubt it would be easier then going back and forth.
Sarah rolled her eyes and huffed a sigh of boredom, it had been three days since any one she knew had brought her flowers; which really are the most depressing thing to bring someone in a hospital, they just wilt away and die right before the eyes of a dying person.

She stared down at the crumpled paper on the ground, and she couldn’t help but let a little tear warm up to the edge of her eye. Her beautiful grey eyes, the only feature she really liked about her body. How they changed colour when she cried, or was cold… or even a bit tired. “Maybe one day….” She gave her self a little hope, thinking about her list lying on the ground, but then took it back. “As if any of it could ever come true…” She said falling asleep to these last thoughts.

Nicky stepped inside of Sarah-Jane's room.
'Guess what I brought,' she said. And she pulled a bouqet of oragami flowers from behind her back. 'Took me age to make, and they won't die,' she said. But she notced that her friend was fast asleep. She walked over to the bed nd spotted crumpled papers ll around the bin. As she opened it and read it, she felt tears well in her eyes.

She wiped her tears away and turned to look at Sarah. She was so oeacful when she slept. Nicky spotted a tear in the corner of her eye. What had she been thinking while Nicky wasn't there? She sat downin the chair next to the bed, the oragami flowers in her lap.

Sarah stirred in her sleep and saw a blurry version of a girl sitting by her bed. It took her a moment before her vision came in well but there was her best friend, Nicky. At the least once a week she would come in, if not no more then three times a week. She sat up in a bit of pain, but managed a smile and even a laugh as she looked at the bouquet of origami flowers. “Oh Nicky, you know me too well! Hopefully the nut nurse won’t throw these out like the last time!” She said rolling her eyes in sarcastic frustration.

“What’s that you got there?” She said noticing a note in Nicky’s hand, and some fresh tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong?” She asked quickly worried!

“Nothing.” Nicky held up the note a bit smiling.

“Oh no… Not that silly thing. Oh Nicky just toss that aside, with the others.” She said, bowing her head low, almost feeling embarrassed. Feeling she would not let it go, Sarah kept her head down hoping Nicky would change the subject, and if not that they wouldn’t talk too long about this list. She never liked talking about death, or “to-do” things. Sarah-Jane was always a spontaneous person… yet, since the cancer hit, everything seemed to change.

Nicky just smiled at her.
'If you don't wanna talk about it, I won't,' she said, putting the list down on the table. 'All I will say is that those things can still happen.' She took her friends hand.

'Well, anyway,' she said wiping her eyes. She tried to stay as optimistic as possible. 'Seen any hot doctors yet? Or is this not like Grey's Anatomy with Mc.Dreamy and Mc.Steamy?'

Sam scratched his stomach, his eyes glancing from the various sandwhich items that were on the menu. His stomach had started to growl, and the food clerk behind the counter raised an eyebrow at the strange rumble. She opened her mouth to speak, but Sam raised a finger in the air. The lady took the gesture in a confounded manner, as Sam reached into his pocket searching for money. Going through each one, and taking both of his shoes off to see if there was some form of currency in them like usual, he sighed, slipping them back on.

"Gladys-" Sam began.

"Its Janice." The clerk said abruptly.

"Janice, mind if I call you Janice?" Sam asked.

"Yes." Sam's new friend, Janice, said bluntly.

"Anyway, Janice, I was wondering if you could spare a working-class boy some food. My salary just isn't cutting it right now and-"

Before Sam could finish his dramatic dialogue (he was on his knees), a rather heavy plastic bag had hit him square in the face. This caused some of the patients who were children to laugh. Standing up and lifting the bag, which had some bread, meat, and cheese in it, he waved to the coutner before preceding up to his good friend, Sarah-Jane's room, munching happily on his bite to eat.

Sarah was rather happy the thought was left behind of her silly list, and she thought it would be wiser to have the nurse clean up after her more often. Though Nicky could be right, it felt unlikely that anything on her lists would ever come true. But she tired very hard not to show her pessimistic side.

'Seen any hot doctors yet? Or is this not like Grey's Anatomy with Mc.Dreamy and Mc.Steamy?'

This next question caught her friend off guard and Sarah-Jane couldn’t help but think of the one doctor who would check up on her now and then. But there was not much she could mention of him, he only filled in now and then, and she thought he was married. As she was telling very little of this very little stranger and how this hospital could never dream of being the next ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, she was caught off mid sentence by another friend of hers.

“Uh, hello? Hungry much, Sam?” She chuckled slightly, watching him stuff some more food in his mouth and smile. She kind of looked at Nicky with an odd smile, still wondering how Sam had ever managed to join their small circle of friends. But it was the constant laughs he gave that reminded them each time, (not to mention his oblivion to obvious factors of life).

Nicky looked up and smiled as Sam walked in.
'Hello, Sam,' she said. Been begging for food again, have you?' she asked laughing. 'Well, come sit down, you look tired.' Sam was always overworking himself. 'Boy, you need a vacation...'

She turned back to Sarah.
'Married, huh? Oh well.' She frowned. 'We need a realy hospital somehwere around here, with real doctors, like Mc. Dreamy,' she joked. 'Or someone funny, like House.'

As Sarah had noticed Sam's appearance, the bell boy nodded, not really in a gesture of 'Haha, hello to you too!" but more or less to break up the food allowing for easier digestion. He let it go down the right pipe, patted his stomach and held in a burp, before giving a big smile. He then spoke, in the direction of the two young ladies.

"A growing boy's got to eat. How else am I supposed to survive in this dog-eat-dog world?" Sam asked, as he brushed his fingers on the side of his jeans. Finding an empty seat, he rolled his eyes as the two girls talked about house. Television. Hotel guests are more amusing than that.

"So, how's Ms. Sarah-Jane feeling today?" Sam asked, his hands together under his chin, one cupping the other which in turn was in the shape of a fist. His arms were rested upon his legs as he looked at Sarah, waiting for a response.

Sarah liked the thought of House as a guest in the hospital, she found him rather attractive for an older man, but besides that thought he was extremely hilarious to her thoughts. Sarah laughed at Sam’s look as the girls talked of hot tv boys and other such things that drove Sam nuts. She always loved the laugh Sam could give her, rather intentionally or not, but this time he died it down a notch. He sat down and asked her how she was feeling.

“Well, fine I guess… as fine as one can get in a hospital.” She said smiling lightly, trying to make light of the situation, but it never could get light enough for Sarah-Jane, not with such a touchy subject.

“Well, honestly… I’m in pain, but that’s what the drugs are for…and hopefully I’ll be out soon. Come on though guys, you know the routine. Don’t worry about it; I’ll be around for a while yet!” She said smiling; but that was what scared them all. The thing was, Sarah had with-stood treatment for longer then the normal patient, and she lived passed the thought of expectancy.

But life could never be thought of with death in the same sentence. Not with her, she needed to think positive, if not for her then her friends. She looked at them both and smiled, hoping one of them would say something.

"If you say so, kiddo." Sam said, as he leaned back in his chair. He stuffed the plastic wrapper down his jean pocket, and then put his hands behind his head and sighed. Sarah-Jane was one of the first people he had met ever since he had moved from his old town to here. He would never forget their first encounter, Sam getting everything wrong at his first day working in the hotel and Sarah, a total stranger then, had helped cheered him up. That was only one of the many times that Sarah had helped him, and those events were only out numbered by how many times she had bailed Sam out of trouble. All that Sam could think about was how much she didn't deserve this.

Rubbing his eyes, he felt the plastic bag fall out of his pokcet and onto the floor. Standing, Sam walked over towards the trash bin and threw it away. As the baggie hit the trash cans floor, Sam noticed the various crumpled papers that scattered the area.

"What's all this?" Sam asked, but answered his own question as he picked up one of the ruffled notes and read the contents aloud, but to himself.

"Travel, Fall in Love, Go swimming with sharks..." Sam started to say, before looking back to Sarah. "This is quite a list you've got here." He grinned as he walked over to her and held it out to her, gesturing for her to take it.

"Where is Sarah's room? She's kind of tall, dark eyes, dark-"

"She's down that hallway and to your right, room 212." The lovely receptionist answered.

"Oh, thank you." Gage shuffled in the direction of his beloved Sarah's room, turning right down the hallway, his hands shaking as he approached closer. "209...210....211...212." He muttered.

"What will she say?! What if she dosn't like the flowers?! Gah!" Gage pondered to himself as he paced outside Sarah's hospital door. "I can't believe I'm such an idiot!" He threw up his arms and peered into the room quietly. Her friends are in there!!!!! He thought nervously. He started to walk away with the balloons and he flowers in his arms, but then looked back toward the room. What will her friends think if they see me...'Oh it's the punk kid who likes to stare at you, Sarah!' Gage scratched his head and turned back to the direction of the hospital room. He walked slowly, a bead of sweat cautiously rolling down is cheek.

Gage slowly entered the room with the balloons and the bouquet of flowers. He stood in the doorway, hoping somebody would notice him, but then stumbled up to Sarah's bedside. "I got you some flowers! And some baloons! I heard you were in the hospital and I just wanted to..I mean..you know..umm. Gah!" Gage set the flowers in her lap and tied the balloons to her bed, fumbling with the bow. He stood back and mustered up a smile.

Sarah smiled at the fact that the present topic was dropped, but as she saw Sam work his way towards the trash pail in her room. He noticed the notes all around the pail all to quickly, and Sarah was regretting she had not called the nurse in after she threw down her last list and hoped Sam would just simply think it a joke and throw it away. To her dismay he was all too curious.
"What's all this?" He said, leaning down and picking up one of the many crumpled pieces.
Throw it down, throw it out! Come on Sam! She bit the bottom of her lip and looked over to Nicky. Nicky merely shrugged, indicating she should just let Sam ask the question she had already asked.

"Travel, Fall in Love, and Go swimming with sharks...” Sam looked up at Sarah-Jane with an interesting look, something Sarah never noticed before. "This is quite a list you've got here." He grinned as he walked over to her and held it out to her, gesturing for her to take it.

Sarah snatched it, but not rudely more like the embarrassment written clearly on her face. Oh come on, how am I to get out of this! Where is that confounded nurse button!! She barely had time to concentrate on such a thought when she saw a very familiar face stumble into her room.

"I got you some flowers! And some balloons! I heard you were in the hospital and I just wanted to. I mean. You know..umm. Gah!" Sarah watched Gage set the flowers in her lap and tied the balloons to her bed. “Gage! You came to visit! But how did you know where to find me? I’m sorry you came to see me like this, I’m not looking my best today am I…” She smiled and thanked him for the gifts and offered him a seat.

She stole a quick glance at Nicky, not really thinking, but the words she tried to mouth to Sarah caught her off guard. Did she just ask me if I was flirting!? No way! Gage and I aren’t like that… besides I don’t think he’d ever like me… I got use to that idea fast. She sighed, almost as if she was disappointed, but quickly bounced back with a smile.

Of course you weren't, she mouthed, smirking. She beckoned Sam over.
'Don't mention the list, she doesn't wanna talk about it,' she said quietly to him.

She was upset that her friend thought these thi$ngs could not happen anymore. but she still had time! And there was Gage, he was so in love with her. Couldn't she see that? She knew Sarah liked him. but Sarah would NEVER admit that. No way.

Gage took a seat on the other side of Sarah's bed next to the open window and twiddled his thumbs nervously. "Well, I called your parent's house and asked where you might be..." He trailed off. "I tried calling your apartment, but there was no answer."

Oh great job, genius!!! She know you have her number! How stupid can you get!! Call her parent's house.. I'm such an idiot!! He thought angrily to himself, but showed no sign of it. "I didn't know which flowers to get you... Hope you like the daisies." He mumbled just loud enough for Sarah to hear. His legs were restless as he bounced them nervously. "Listen, um... I'm not stalking you, if that's what you think I'm doing. I just...you know...wanted to come see you." He winced, waiting for a reply. He glanced at Sarah's companions and then back at Sarah.

"Listen, um... I'm not stalking you, if that's what you think I'm doing. I just...you know...wanted to come see you."

Sarah-Jane wanted to burst into a fit of laughter at this silly comment but knew all to well he’d take it too personally! She simply smiled at him in a comforting way and said, “I’m very happy you came to see me! I’ll be out soon enough then we can all go to a dinner or something.”
She twitched her mouth in a funny way; she thought her comment sounded too much like a prison line. I’ll be out soon enough? What the hell was that? Oh why does he make me so nervous!
She looked at Nicky and Sam and couldn’t help but smile so boldly at them!
“Alright! Let’s see if I can act like my old self again, eh? Sam, you take care of some kind of dinner plan or something, I want to have some fun when I get out. Nicky! I’ll need you to take care of getting my things! Certainly don’t want to leave with old clothes, or these horrible hospital gowns!” There that sounded more like her old self, very take-charge, in a cheery way.

She threw her hands in the air and stretched! Time to get back to normal, well as normal as I can get!

"Will do! I'm helping the cooks create a new dish at the hotel's restaurant. Don't worry about the bill, it's on me." Sam said, giving a wink to the people in the room. He had quickly forgotten about the note as Gage's entrance stopped his train of thought. Sam then walked over to the door, pausing before looking back at the group.

"I'll see you all there." Sam said, giving a grin and a thumbs up before leaving the hospital room and then preceding down stairs. To be honest, Sam had never worked in the hotel's kitchens before and had never talked to any of the cooks, most of them spoke to each other in their native tongue, something French or Italian. And the bill? Forget about that. Paying up for anything would take out a huge chunk of his salary, and he already was in debt to his boss at the inn. Shrugging, Sam knew that he could manage out the kinks at a later date.

Sam hurried out of the building, waving as he saw the lunch lady smoking a cigarette outside of the building. Pausing, Sam took out his car keys and walked towards the parking lot, apparently not knowing that he had walked to the hospital instead of driving.
