Time: Victorian Era. Fall of 1840. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victorian_era
Place: The outskirts of Southeast London.
The Opera House is Dorothy Edna Musgrave’s pride and joy, and a poster child for the era’s architecture and cultural standing. From without, it looks like a beautiful structural melody, an amalgamation of a place of theatre and a residence – too small to be one, too large to be another. From within, it continues to amaze, with room upon room of glistening glass, glittering gold, and other gaudy goods. How Ms. Musgrave turned her life of lower class into the luxury it is today is a mystery to many, but the few who have her acquaintance know the lavishness is well-deserved. Just outside the city of London, mere minutes away from both the country and the sea by coach, The Opera House maintains the top rung of the ladder amongst its competitors. Which is needless to say, considering the line of work this certain entrepreneur decided to delve in.
What is it, then? Why, the Opera House is a place where all the fallen women dream of making their homes. One shouldn’t call it a sanctuary, though, because Ms. Dorothy is quite exclusive; consider it more like heaven for those whose line of work is less than morally accepted – and a heaven for those who take advantage of these indecencies as well, let’s not forget! Exclusivity is of the utmost importance: only the richest of the rich, the most affluent bourgeoisie and aristocrats are given permission to enter her home and take part in what she has so dutifully crafted. It takes much more than pretty furniture and pleasant conversation to keep noblemen at bay, after all. Every aspect of the house and everyone within it has been calculated to the last detail by Musgrave herself.
There has always been at least one person curious as to what her magic touch is – that is, where she finds the girls that suit the place so well. Many tales have been spun by the younger generation of the aristocracy, most of which have not had the courage to set foot into the establishment itself: some say she roams the streets of the industrially-driven, soot-filled city of London looking for that perfect face; others propose she has a band of European men who kidnap women from all over Europe and bring them to her doorstep for assessment; more have rumored that her perfect face has not yet been found. But what a preposterous suggestion indeed, considering the amount of beauty enclosed within one structure. Why, a man could live his entire life within that house and die with his lustful thirst still unsated!
Current events show there are two very widely talked about girls; if men ever gossip, it is about Carissa Lynn and Sueli Magdalena Worthington. They have arisen practically from ashes to the status they currently hold fast to, and in a sense have cheated the clergy and gained their fame. However, obviously so, this is because of the talent they radiate in their current profession.
Are you prepared to venture into the life of industrial England? Be wary, in a world such as this one, no one wants to dally in the gutter.
