REAL Gothic-Style Interest Check ( )

Postby River-Koi on Thu Jul 02, 2009 6:53 pm

Okay, so I'm in sort of a gloomy mood, and this happens to be a recurring thought that comes into mind whenever I'm in such a mood.

So here's the deal: I'm looking for a DEEP, THOUGHT-PROVOKING, LITERATE role play with a group of people who aren't illiterate, simplistic in character creation, or just so lazy that they have to copy all of their writing from a mixture of random animes they've seen in their lifetime. If you're one of those people, please navigate away from this thread before you become more offended than you probably already are. If you're not one of those people, welcome! :)

Since one of my Gothic-style RPs has already been hijacked by hormonally-driven mediocre authors, I'm going to try again. Here goes everything:

I'm basically thinking of setting the RP in a Olden-Times fantasy land, which will include a castle run/owned by some twisted duke/duchess/monarch/patriarch, who happens to have a special power of some sort to where anyone who is brought to the castle as a worker, guard, servant, etc. is bound to it for the rest of eternity, since the ruler somehow feeds off of the life of the people around him/her. That's why they continue to stay in power. The plot, of course, is open for discussion, so don't be afraid to ask any questions because I don't really know how this will turn out either.

Gothic or dystopian? Meh... How about focus remains on the gloomy environment, but also on taking down this guy. Since you're going for a fantasy genre, it could be a trip to get to him and somehow get rid of him, making particular emphasis on the state of the country (or corresponding mass of land where this takes place.)

You know, that's what I basically had in mind. To where it's not just one of those "Hey, let's secretly plot against some evil force and eventually go on some sort of fantastical adventure and somehow save the whole country (or corresponding landmass) and become heroes" RPs, but more of a focus on the characters and how they got into their situations in the first place. The Gothic thing was simply the style the city (or country... you know) was built in and how the people in it behave and act--like 12th Century mindsets.

I'd be interested if he was a vampire, and moreso if I was allowed to play him. [And I'd like to think that I don't steal plot from anime, seeing as I don't actually watch it (minus Kuroshitsuji, but that's one show, it can't have that much influence.)] *crosses arms* Just because I like vampires and use asterisks to denote action when out of character doesn't mean I'm illiterate.

EDIT: Ah, ninja'd. So I guess actually interacting with Mr. Bad Guy won't really happen so much. Either way, I think I'm fairly good at playing the Creepy Things in a dark setting.
You can usually tell how active I am by how often I update my sig pets.

That's fine. And trust me, if you were illiterate, I would know by now. And I happen to use asterisks when I feel they're useful in setting a tone, thank you very much. Plus, I should probably mention I have nothing against anime-- just the people who make that certain art/executing style into a way of life.

A vampire... One causing chaos from afar in a castle? Oh dear, this is Castlevania all over again! I reckon I may go for it still, but are we talking about fantasy-influenced history or actual fantasy? 'Cause now that you mention the 12th century and the like, it feels we'll be restricting people's characters regarding equipment, social background and even in their mindset. Also, about the fantasy element here, are we talking magic? Fantasy species? (Besides the vampire.) How about custom items or otherwise awkward elements in a history-based role-play? (Think... Using chained balls where the actual version of the flail was actually a series of chains on a stick.)

What is the Castlevania that everyone seems to know about? I'm going to look it up; every idea I have regarding vampires is deemed "just like Castlevania."

EDIT: Wikipedia is my best friend.

Umm... Wow. What's Castlevania? I've heard it before, but what exactly is it? And the fantasy element isn't going to be a big thing. By that I mean that magic and such isn't common at all and nobody really thinks twice about the bad guy having any sort of special powers. Personally, I thought the vampire ting was more similar to the whole Dracula legend. And the castle isn't going to be far away. I was planning on it being where most of the story takes place. So yes, this is very-slightly-fantasy-influenced history. So there won't be any magical fire-balls or talking animals or the like, but just some mysterious force no one really knows about. So, there will be a strong historical element, but for the sake of being able to actually have a story such as this a few things are going to have to be tweaked.

Crap, I'll need to brush up on my history then... To keep the Castlevania answers short, it's a series of games regarding vampire hunting. From what I've played, they're only platforms with RPG elements, but that's not important - the reason I was saying it sounded like Castlevania was 'cause on the ones I've played, it's always X hunting Dracula/Y in a castle, a HUGE castle.

Hahaha, okay. And don't worry about brushing up too much, because there are bound to be some historical errors either way. And trust me, there won't be any vampire hunting that requires an infinite amount of tasks to be finished which actually aren't very important once you get down to it. As a matter of fact, I'll probably have the OOC up and have more of the details in there.
