About:
Yes, it's a very long read - but it's worth it!

For longer than anyone can remember, there has been a tradition. No one knows how it came to be, and no one really knows why, but every year, in the middle of the tenth month, it happens. Forty-eight children between eleven and thirteen years old are Chosen - marked with a unique tattoo on the back of their right hand. It is not understood how it gets there, and it cannot be removed; being a child who has been Chosen can only mean one thing - that sometime between 28th and 31st October, you will be snatched away from your home, your family, your life, and you will never be seen again.

But, contrary to popular belief, the story doesn't end there. The Chosen kids, who are now to be referred to as Fledglings, are escorted by Initiates - who were once Fledglings themselves - to a collection of caves deep beneath the city. Once there, the Fledglings meet a group of people who call themselves Gabriels, who they will be taught by. The Gabriels come across as Angels, whose sole purpose is to guide the Fledglings into the light that, they believe, they were beginning to leave behind in their previous life.

Well, that's all fine and dandy, except for one little problem - there's a catch. Over the first four years of life as a Fledgling, most of them reject the tattoos their Goddess, Dea, gave them, and die. By Second Year, there are only twenty-four of the original forty-eight remaining; Third Year has only twelve, and Fourth Year sees only four kids prepare to complete their years as Fledglings.

They do this via Initiation. At the stroke of midnight on 28th October, the Elders - ancient Gabriels who are the direct descendants of the 'Angels' who founded this establishment - send the four Fledglings up into the city to collect the newly Chosen forty-eight, - twelve children each - and give them a time-limit of forty-eight hours. This may sound easy, but the Chosen children are protected - by supposed Demons.

If a Fledgling manages to collect his twelve and remain unharmed by the Demons by midnight on the 30th, the children will take their places as First Year Fledglings, and he will move on to be a First Grade Initiate - causing the tattoo on the back of his hand to expand or change. However, if a Fledgling fails to bring his twelve back to the Elders, he simply disappears, and the remaining students - Fledglings, Initiates, and lower-ranking Gabriels alike - are informed that the Fourth Year Fledgling's tattoo rejected him a year late, or that the humans discovered his identity and killed him.

But, yet again, this is not the end - or the truth. What really happens to the poor, failed Fledgling, is far more terrible than being rejected by his tattoo and his Goddess. The Elders force him through a portal that they believe kills him horribly and painfully - and he ends up in another world.

This world is very similar to our world - the streets are the same, the buildings are the same - but it is completely devoid of anything living or materialistic. Tormented by the lack of company and food - although, technically, in this world he doesn't need it - the Fledgling is driven mad, and eventually becomes one of the Shadow People; dark, sinister creatures that live in the shadows of this most backwards of worlds and feed off the fear of other failed Fledglings.

That is how it has worked for centuries; millennia; since the beginning of time. Only this year, there's a difference.

The four Fledglings that made it to their Fourth Year are very close friends - something which hardly ever happens, and which poses a threat to the Elders; normally the final four are estranged, and are therefore unlikely to help each other in their task of finding the Chosen children. They are also unusually gifted and, in the Elders' opinions, way too smart for their own good. Thus, even though all four Fledglings bring back their twelve Chosen children and complete the Initiation by getting their tattoos expanded, the Elders bundle them off to the Other World anyway and tell the rest of the establishment that they failed and died, either at the hands of humans or Dea.

However, when the four Fledglings turn up in the Other World, they are bonded by their friendship and are able to resist the Shadow People's tempting call to join them. Thus managing to maintain a hold on their humanity, the four Fledglings realise that they are no longer blind to the Elders' ways, and come to see that it is, in fact, the Gabriels who are the Demons, and the creatures who protect the Chosen children who are the Angels. Now they must find a way to break back through to Reality and warn the rest of the Fledglings of the sinister motives behind the Gabriels' kindness before it is too late.

Rules:
*Please Note*
OhhMyGeeABumbleBee and myself are gods in this RP, meaning she can enforce any of the following rules just as much as I can [x
1. All the normal rules; keep romance/violence pg13 etc, but there's a few extras.
2. Please try and be as literate as you can. We all have off-days - mine have been quite frequent recently - and we all make mistakes, but I'm expecting at least two paragraphs per post, one post per day - minimum. If I don't get the impression that you can do this from reading your character sheet, I won't accept you. Simple.
3. Swearing is 100% permitted, but don't go overboard. Eff and blind all you want, by all means, but it looks ridiculous if it's every other word.
4. You can play an Initiate or a Fledgling in the lower Years if you want to, but I'd like a good explanation as to what part they're going to play in the RP.
5. I suppose the Shadow People and Elders can have certain powers - but that's up to you. However, if we think you being too elaborate or OTT, we'll be sure to tell you.
6. I shouldn't have to say this, but don't god-mod. It pisses me off.
7. Please don't post in the IC until you've been accepted in the OOC, that pisses me off too.
8. HAVE FUN! It's meant to be fun!

Roles:
Fourth Year Fledglings - the four friends that make it to their last year as Fledglings and are pushed into the Other World by the Elders
* DyingHere - Rae Quinn
* Reserved For OhhMyGeeABumbleBee
* St.Jimmy - Alex Carson
* Reserved For Samantha

Lower Year Fledglings* - Fledglings who have yet to undergo the Initiation
* Reserved For SkyFletcher
* Gabriel_Whist - Dick Archer

Initiates* - people who have passed the Initiation (like the Fledglings, there are four different Years)
*

Gabriels - the 'Angels' who look after the Fledglings and, to a point, the Initiates. Higher ranking Gabriels have completed the transformation into Demons, and know/aid the Elders' motives
*
*
*
*

Elders - the three Demons that make up the head of the establishment, and are behind killing the failed Fledglings.
*
*

* These characters are not needed for the RP as they are insignificant to the plot line. However, they can be created if there is a good enough reason behind them which has been verified by Sammi or myself.

Character Sheet:
Name:
Age: Be sensible
Gender:
Role: See above
Year/Rank: Fledglings, Initiates and Gabriels only
Personality:
Bio:
Appearance: Picture and/or brief description - no anime please (if playing a Shadow Creature, an Elder or a higher-ranking Gabriel, description is necessary)
Other: Use your imagination - picture of their tattoo, whatever :]

The spaces available are only guidelines; more can be opened up if necessary. To that extent, let us know if you want to reserve a character.
The IC will be up as soon as we have enough characters, and our character sheets will be up shortly.
We would like to have at least one person for each of the roles (excluding the four friends and the two roles that have been pointed out) if at all possible.
Any questions, feel free to post them below or PM either myself or Sammi (OhhMyGeeABumbleBee) [x

Name:
Alex Carson.

Image Image

Age:
Sixteen.

Gender:
Male.

Role:
Fourth Year Fledgling.

Year/Rank:
Fourth year.

Personality:
As a twelve year old, Alex was loud, extroverted and up for a laugh. He was constantly in some difficult situation at school, but he was a low-grade trouble-causer: mostly likeable, but in enough mischief to irritate teachers. Never tall or well-built, he depended on wit to talk him out of things rather than his fists, so it was important for him to be quick-thinking enough to come out with fast retorts to talk other people down. For the first twelve years of his life, Alex Carson existed to make people laugh.

With the coming of his tattoo and the years that followed, however, Alex changed. His easygoing, carefree nature all but disappeared, and he revealed a much more dedicated side. Alex had always been intelligent, but now he started actually showing that, and over the course of the four years he became much more serious. That light, easygoing side to him is still there, but he's just never really had the opportunity to do anything with it, and now he's much more practical and loyal. Some of his earlier mischievousness remains in the form of arrogance, however, and that means that Alex can often over-estimate himself and believe that something is well within his capabilities when in fact he would find it hard to achieve it, and that side to him can irritate people very easily.

Bio:
Alex Carson came into the world at 5.36am on a rainy Tuesday morning, and he came in screaming. The noise he made as a newborn baby was indicitave of the routine he would follow throughout his early years, because Alex was never a quiet child. The first word he ever learned was an expletive he overhead his dad say when he stubbed his toe, and that was his favourite word for weeks. Shouting it from a pram as he was pushed around the shops became his favourite hobby until he was distracted by the next thing that captured his interest, and for Alex, those distractions came frequently, none of them lasting long. Painting the living room walls green with his first ever paint set was an interest that survived until he was caught and shouted at, and waiting outside the living room for Father Christmas with a net one Christmas Eve was also a short-lived endeavour, since he accidentally hit his dad in the face with it and was sent to bed with a stern reprimand.

Things didn't much improve for Alex as far as behaviour went, because even as he got older, he was constantly pushing boundaries, but he was never unhappy. No: for Alex, life was very enjoyable, because he had parents who cared about him, friends, a position on his school's football team and even his new baby brother, born when Alex was six, was a source of entertainment at times. He had very few worries, and this continued on as he aged still further: from being a remarkably carefree child, he became a remarkably carefree adolescent on the brink of his teenage years.

Alex had always been something of a natural trouble-causer, but at the age of twelve he was still fairly obedient and young enough to fear the consequences of disobeying his parents. Therefore, when he woke up one misty morning in mid-October to find the faint outline of a tattoo on the back of his right hand, he was just as surprised as anyone - not that that was believed. Convinced he'd managed to get a tattoo marked onto his skin for the sole purpose of annoying them, his parents were furious at him, and angrier still when he stubbornly stuck to the story that the tattoo had appeared out of nowhere. Over the following weeks, it began to darken and become more solid, so Alex took to wearing gloves to disguise it: he didn't need his mother thinking he was getting his hand repeatedly tattooed, since she was already furious at him for the faint outline that he couldn't explain. The mysteriousness of the mark might have frightened other children, but Alex was naturally curious and had always had an arrogant confidence that he was destined to be adventurous and for something special - to him, the tattoo seemed to be the first sign that he was right.

October 31st was always one of Alex's favourite days of the year, because for a boy who loved nothing better than to be out with his friends doing something stupid, Halloween's tradition of dressing up and going from door to door demanding sweets from irritable neighbours was absolutely perfect for him. The night before Halloween of that year, he was walking home from a friend's house after discussing preparations for the following evening, when he somehow managed lose himself and end up in in a part of the neighbourhood he didn't know. He wasn't worried until he saw a sixteen year old boy striding purposefully towards him, but Alex being Alex, he didn't try to run. Instead, he waited with interest to see what the older boy wanted; the last thing he expected to hear were the words, "come with me", and to be led to what Alex would later discover were a group of other Fledglings - because that was exactly what he was.

Four long years stood before him, but Alex was one of the few who survived the change and did not reject his tattoo. At the end, he was much more focussed than he had ever been as the curious twelve year old who had so willingly gone with the stranger who promised him something special, boosted onwards by his own sense of self-importance and the certainty that he was supposed to have something better than a mundane every-day life. Leaving behind his recklessness, however, revealed a dedicated worker who excelled during his four years of training, with arrogance still there beneath the surface as his main flaw: often, Alex feels that he doesn't even have to try, because he's certain he'll succeed anyway. Now, he is about to go through his own Initiation, and he is confident that he can achieve the twelve Fledglings that he needs to find. Alex is also very close to the other three who have made it as far as he has, however, and he wants to help them as much as he can if anyone needs it during the forty eight hours of their Initiation. After all, he hopes that they'd do the same thing for him.

Appearance:
Alex stands at around 5'7", with tousled blonde hair and a build that has filled out a little since he was a waif of a twelve year old, but he's still slim and hardly broad-shouldered. Never one to be in many fights when he was younger, Alex doesn't have very many scars or anything like that, except for a few on his legs from falling off his bike when he was little. The only really distinguishing thing about him is his birthmark, which is still clear on the right side of his neck and hasn't faded much at all since he was born. Other than that, with brown eyes, an average height and an average weight, there's not much to set Alex apart in appearances from the next sixteen year old boy.

Character Sheet:

Name: Richard "Dick" Archer

Age: 12

Gender: Male

Role: Lower Year Fledgling

Year/Rank: He has not yet been taken, but this year he quite possibly will be.

Personality: Dick is a solemn child, very closed off and defensive to all but his few friends. He is a good hearted boy, and wants nothing more than to be a superhero, and he has the personality of a classic golden age superhero underneath the darker exterior. Trusting, honest, loyal, always knowing what is right and wrong.

Bio: Since he was old enough to read Richard has insisted on going by the nickname of Dick, as his favorite character, Dick Greyson, the original Robin, went by that, and Richard wanted to be as similar to his hero as possible. This nickname was fine when he was a young child, a little odd for modern times, but no real problem. However as he got older Dick endured more and more ridicule for this nickname. He was a slight, nerdy type of boy anyways, his nose always buried in a book, or comic as the case may be, daydreaming, and letting his imagination run wild. He would have been teased no matter what, but with the name Dick it only became that much worse. So for much of his young life Dick has been bullied, and lived the life of a young nerd, enduring the harassment of the bigger and more socially adept boys. On top of that, the black tattoo on his right hand hasn't helped anything, and lately has been causing him to have an odd sense of unease, as if something bad is about to happen, not that anyone will tell him what is, his parents and teachers just keep telling him that he's being silly.

Appearance: Dick stands at a not so imposing 4'11, with a slight, slender frame, so skinny his muscles are incredibly apparent under his pale skin, making him appear almost muscular, if it wasn't for how thin his arms and legs are. His hair is black and mid lengthed, hanging unruly around his face, usually covering his bright blue eyes. He is a gangly and awkward young lad, but his face is quite handsome, and from the large size of his hands and feet, its clear that he will probably grow into a tall good looking man.

His tattoo: http://files.vector-images.com/clipart/cross_zh10.gif

Other: I don't know what you're looking for here, some random tidbit about his past to offer insight into the character, a minor power, something to connect him to the storyline? Sorry, I'm just not sure what you want people to put in this category.

Lauren, that's fantastic xD Thanks hun. It's just that people know, to a point, what the tattoo means; they may not necessarily understand that their kids get taken away to learn how to become demons or whatever but they know that their kids will get taken away :]

Gabriel_Whist: Thanks for showing your interest, but I'm afraid the children have already been taken this year. I'm sorry that wasn't made clear enough. If you want to edit, feel free; if not, thanks anyway. As for the Other part, it doesn't matter what you put next to it, but I like St.Jimmy's idea to put the tattoo there [x

Sorry it took me so long, but here's my character sheet:

Name: Taylor Rae Stevens – "Rae Quinn"
Age: 16
Gender: Female
Role: Fourth Year Fledgling
Year/Rank: Fourth Year

Personality: Rae is a sweet girl. She's kind, empathetic, and very sensitive, but don't be fooled into thinking she's a pushover. She used to be the nicest, quietest girl you'd ever meet, and to a point, she still is - but life as a Fledgling has hardened her, and now she isn't afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Without being discourteous she can speak her mind, but she tries her best to take peoples' feelings into account and always feels bad when she says something mean, necessary or not.

Bio: Taylor Rae Stevens – the name of a dead girl. Before she was Chosen, Taylor had nothing. No dad, no siblings, no friends – in fact, the only things she did have were a not-so-stable roof over her head and a mother who thought she was a mistake. Despite the crappy treatment at home, however, when the time came for her to start school Taylor went in with theory that if you're nice to people, they'll be nice to you. This was, unfortunately, not the case. On the contrary to Taylor's theory, the people who were nice tended to attract the people who weren't, and she was picked on from the day she started primary school until the day she was taken away from everything she had ever called normal.

Needless to say, when she woke up one Sunday morning in the middle of October to find an intricate tattoo decorating the back of her hand, she was filled with excitement. No one knew exactly what happened to the children who woke up with mysterious tattoos and were then taken from their homes later in the month, but they were never seen again, and most people thought them dead. Taylor didn't consider this a problem, and remained optimistic that there was life after being taken away – and if there wasn't? Well, it had to be better than living this life.

Of course her mother freaked out when she saw the tattoo, and tried everything to get it off – only she made it clear that it wasn't because she didn't want her daughter taken away from her. No, the only reason Taylor's mother wanted to get rid of the tattoo was because she didn't want people talking about her. The tattoo refused to be removed, though, and eventually her mother cast her out onto the streets.

When a Fourth Year Fledgling found her and introduced her to his interesting world, Taylor was delighted. The only problem was, they didn't seem to know her name; seeing as how her mother would, from now on, presume her dead, she decided to leave Taylor Rae Stevens behind, and became Rae Quinn.

At first, Rae enjoyed life as a Fledgling. It was new and exciting, and the Gabriels were really nice. She'd never felt safer or more secure in her life. Until she watched one of the Fledglings reject his tattoo. It happened right in front of her, as well as a bunch of other Fledglings, and it was horrible. There was blood and screaming and sobbing and begging for the pain to stop - and it did, when the kid died. The Gabriels disposed of the body and carried on like nothing had happened, and appeared to expect the Fledglings to do so, too; it was instantly obvious that Rae was not the only Fledgling who thought this odd, but anyone who brought it up was quickly silenced, one way or another.

Twenty three more kids died in that First Year, and Rae witnessed eleven of them. They were told that a lot more would die - and that they, as individuals, were very unlikely to survive this process. In short, they would be picked off one by one by their so-called Goddess, Dea, until only four of them remained. It goes without saying that Rae learnt very quickly not to fear death and, to a point, expect it.

At first, she tried very hard to isolate herself from the Fledglings in her Year, and most of them, having had the same idea themselves, respected this. But eventually she found herself drawn toward three other Fledglings, and they forged a strong bond; despite being close friends, they never expected that they would be the four to make it to Fourth Year. As soon it became apparent that they would be expected to compete against each other in order to be initiated, it was decided that there would be no competition; they would help each other as much as they could, and do everything within their power to ensure that all four of them completed their Initiation. Unfortunately, all did not go to plan.

Character Sheet:

Name:
Tom Knight

Age:
15

Gender:
Male,

Role:
Forth Year Fedgling

Year/Rank:
Forth

Personality:
Tom is always the bubbly character and the one who it's hard to get down, even when the odds are crushing down he will always try do his best, as long as his friends are beside him.
He is however one of the most stubborn people you may have the fortune to meet, and be this a good or a bad thing is hard to tell. It is hard to annoy him, but if you manage to, you will shortly regret it, as Tom is quick to react, and often reacts using his fists, and he knows how to use them to their highest capacity. He is exceptionally protective of his friends, more so than himself or his family as he has never been too close to them, if you should happen to decide to annoy one of his friends he will react with either violence, or a vicious comeback which will send you reeling.

Bio:
Toms parents were the kind which think that only their child can achieve anything, and had already planned out the life for their only son. They had decided that Tom was going to complete high school, and leave for medical school with only the highest grades. From there he would become a doctor in the local hospital and marry the woman of his parents choice who would give birth to their grandchildren. Needless to say, Tom didn't like this, and needless to say his parents were a bit narked when they saw the tattoo which had been painted on his hand.
His mother had forced him up the winding stairs to the en suite bathroom in her room, and had attempted to scrub the twirling marks from his skin, using harsh chemicals which left his hands red and bloody, after what seemed like days, she gave up, and dragged him to his room, telling him what would happen if he dared leave his darkened abode. Tom agreed, and sat on his bed, and the shadow hid his smile as his mother closed the heavy oak door. As soon as he heard her foot steps walking away, presumably to find his father so as she could have a rant, he stood up, and grabbed a bag of his which he used when he went on holiday. He stuffed it to breaking point with his clothes and any of his precious possessions, abandoning the picture beside his bed of his parents, and opened his second floor window, and jumped, the bushes below softening the fall. And he ran.

He didn't like the ide of leaving his friends behind, but he was sure they would understand, and he swore that if he survived, he would find them again. When he had first arrived having been found by the elder fledglings he wondered if he would regret leaving. The children he saw around him were so cold to one another, and according to the adults, the chances of hims surviving and reuniting with his old friends was few and far apart, children died in the four years, it was a perilous life, and he became accustomed to the idea of his own death. The only thing about the new place he truly liked were the three other fledglings his had met and became friends with, and who all helped each other survive the ordeals.
