Rock? Or Rap? ( )

Postby RokkReady on Sun Jun 19, 2011 9:54 pm

Alright, so there's ALWAYS this heated discussion in my house about which is better. Rock n' Roll, or Hip-Hop/Rap. What's your opinion?

My story is, is that I grew up with Rock n' Roll. And even with a lot of exposure to rap and hip-hop, I just don't consider Rap and Hip-hop to be music. There's little to no instrumentation, let alone singing. I'm not saying that Rap doesn't take talent. There are quite a few rap songs that I am particularly fond of. It's just that music has a definition. And in my opinion, rap doesn't fit that.

Keep in mind, I'm not trying to start a war, like my unstable household! I just want a logical debate and to hear opinions like a nice boy.
It's more of a take-on-the-world kind of feeling. You gotta do it at least once in your lifetime.

Well personally I believe that rap is music in a sense....Because music is something that has a meaing to a person, and that basically has a beat. When you do listen to rap, each individual has his/ her own style and pace. Each word can be its own beat, or each line has a series or beats within it. I think though what it really comes down to is what your preference is. Cuz I am a pretty well rounded person when it comes to music. I like rap, rock, alternative, and everything sorta inbetween except for country. I believe its music, I just don't really care for the twang they have in their voice. And I completely know what you mean about the whole debate bout this subject becasue it has happened a few times in my own household, and within my school debates. It definately was interesting peoples opinions.
But, back more to the subject at hand Rap is music, It has a beat, has meaning, and is something you can bob your head to. In my opinion that is what music is all about, telling a story about what is important to you. No matter what way it is told whether it be screaming inot a microphone obnoxiously, or kind of singing/high pitched noises into a mic, your singing a beautiful seranade, its all music just with a personal twist.

Hmm. Let's see. In my opinion, rap isn't exactly music. I like some songs, but that is quite rare and, let me just say, rap is becoming violent. Like, example, Bad Meets Evil (I don't know if you've heard it but it is the most vulgar thing I've heard to this day). I think that rap was fun, and it was actually music, before the stupid (and quite useless) vulgarities. Anyways... Rock is my life. So of course, in my opinion, it's much better than rap. But, then again, it's only an opinion, and no one can truly say if it's music or not and which one is better than the other. So, in conclusion, my OPINION is that rock is better than rap and I THINK that rap should not be considered music.
It's just ME!

I like both, but I can be pretty picky. I'm generally more picky about rap and hip-hop.

Grace, the subject matter of a great number of songs in a genre should not influence whether it is music or not. Rock, especially hard rock and metal, has just as much vulgarity as hip-hop and rap.

I agree with this. I really like both, almost the same amount. Except, I'm usually more picky about rock. o_o I've actually had more of a thing for rap lately, compared to rock, but in general I really enjoy all types of music.

Not hard to guess where my taste lays.
Though there are a very select few extremely well written rap songs i can handle.

For me it would be Rock. In all honesty, I can't stand rap. It's just (to me) not music. A person cussing, and saying some rather offensive lines; not exactly singing. Rock all the way for me.

I personally enjoy rock far more than rap (with the exception being Eminem). I've just heard too many songs about "ho's" and drugs to really be able to take it all that seriously.

I don't really consider rap/hip hop to be music. I consider it to take talent (I couldn't rap if my life depended on it) but it's just a beat with spoken words. Artistic expression, yes. Music, not so much.

Rock hits the mark a lot better with me. Metal hits it even more so. Symphonic metal is my high mark. But it's all personal opinions and tastes at the end of the day.
