Roleplay Board: A mass production of roleplays.

Topic Tags:

A forum for discussions about the general design of RPG systems and techniques for building good roleplaying games.
@Alasund: Yes worlds count.

@Tsuki: =P What is begriff?

Status: I'm still trying to make sense of this creational gyre, so I'm thinking about either pairing people up or getting down and dirty with a few people to hammer out those roleplays. If you (one of the four you know who you are) feel like you'd like to try your ideas with someone on the board, go ahead. Kestrel is busy with many other roleplays, but he's still willing to contribute.

Adressing my motivation: I'm not a very motivated person. It takes a bit of spark to get me up and going. So if you have some ideas you'd REALLY like to try specifically with me, message me them and I'll either let you know if I like it and will help you build, or if you should try someone else.

If you want to build with another user on this board, send them a message first asking if they would like to help you build and then follow up with your ideas.
Nothing is as far away as one minute ago.

Begriff means idea, concept, thought, etc. in German. :o
In essence, "Das begriff ist meinen" is a really crappy way of saying "This is my idea".

Weell it was more of like: It's okay for people to use it with consent/without consent/not at all. And of course, people should always give credit.

Yes, I know. By saying "This is my idea" I was claiming ownership of it, as in only I can use it.
The others that I posted were up for grabs.

Prepare for my first world, and a lot of text....

You can use this idea, if you do please PM me a link, since I'm always interested in seeing how my ideas went!^.^

Name:Farrius
The world of Darkness.

One hundred years ago the world was a happy place, the exact details have been smudged by time but there was content and high technology, which made living pleasant. Somewhere along the line, a disagreement sparked aggression, as is usual for humans. The aggression led to war, and one side used a powerful weapon, a weapon only referred to as the 'Forbidden Blade' in the texts of the time. The weapon proved powerful, powerful enough to win the war. But there was an unforeseen side effect. The user went mad, and began to use the 'Forbidden Blade' to tear down cities, destroying thousands.

It took the power of all the remaining nations to stop him, but by then he had already gone to far. For the 'Forbidden Blade' had somehow effected the ecology of the planet. People that breathed the air, slowly went mad. Breathmasks were sent out, contingencies to stop the spreading madness. But once again, they were too late. Cities crumbled, Nations fell. The world was in ruins.

Now we come to the current time, there are a few 'pristine' domes, protected against the madness. A majority of the world, however, is infected. The domes themselves are few and their population is slowly falling. The people outside can seem sane, but somewhere in there lurks the taint of the Forbidden. The madness.

Technology only remains in the Domes, outside it is almost cavemanistic. They are granted some odd powers with the madness, odd only to outsiders, usually it seems perfectly normal to the user. Swords, medieval weapons are predominate, some more sophisticated, some less. Some completely different.

The denizens of the madness zone are just as weird, from people with multiple personalities, to people who are scared of almost anything. Even to people who ARE perfectly sane.... Until they see something, like maybe a teddy bear, which acts like a trigger, sending the person into berserker mode for a couple of hours. Either way humanity dies. The powers are also quite varied, from someone who can 'talk' to wolves, to someone who can craft weapons with his bare hands. From someone who has psychic powers to someone who needs to eat fire to live, the world is now a twisted place.

I was feeling odd that day, as is probably expressed in that explanation.
I've got more where that came from, some weirder, some a lot more sane.
I'll post the next one tomorrow, considering I don't have any of the pre-written txt files on this computer....
I'd put it about 4-6/10. It's developed, but still hasn't really been refined, and is open to interpretation.

Re:What I said above....

World:Rinorby
Land of Nobility

This is a land long at peace. So many years of enforced honesty has made it into a paradise. Honour and Honesty are the two words which define your rank, although since everyone is assumed honest these days it usually is decided by honour. Lying is evil, lying is horrible, that's what people are taught here, and the Wardens enforce it with their Truth-Sense. Lying brings with it the worst death sentence. Worse than any other crime.

However, due to the Wardens getting slightly lax, it is now possible to get away with a small lie. Some have gotten away with a large one. But it is still risky, and most people have been conditioned not to lie, and not to expect others to lie. That allows the many Kingdoms and Estates of this land to exist peacefully, co-existing without conflict.

Due to this though, the world is no longer guarded against power-mungers. And a secret organization has formed to topple the kingdoms, and they aren't afraid to lie. The are armed with their own dark powers, counter to that of the Truth-Sense, and are ready for conflict and a fight for dominance. Standing in the background is a race of Shadows, not taking fight but who are waiting for their own chance at dominence.....

Only about 2/10.......

Sorry I haven't been on in a while, yall. I've been busy with school and haven't been able to pull myself away from the newest Patrick Rothfuss book: Wise Man's Fear(Book two of the Kingkiller chronicles) annnd if you all say a word against the man, I'll use sympathy and make your blood boil. I waited two years for this book and it was worth every minute. I just pray I don't have to be twenty for the next installment.

Two words: space opera.

You can do a whole lot with that concept in and of itself. Multiple planets, galaxies, universes, etc. Multiple races. Inter-species relations, wars, diplomacy, racism, etc. It gives a lot of flexibility, but also allows for a more interesting clinch in the fact that technology, in and of itself, can alter situations. After all, any sufficiently advanced culture would see like wizards to those without understanding.

Another idea I don't see much of is a corporate styled universe. A city full of companies all vying against one another. Toss in a little murder and you've got a crime-mystery styled RP with corporate figureheads trying to cover their own asses through a possible investigation.

I have an idea I have thoroughly developed. I was planning on writing a short story or even a novel once. I never did though :D

Buuut, I think it would make a fantastic roleplay if not a novel. this concept is not new, but I rather enjoyed reading "The Great Game" series and that served as inspiration.

The idea is this: There exists a multitude of different universes right alongside ours. Normally, there is no way for any of them to interact with each other directly, although because the laws of physics and even the nature of reality can vary drastically between them, the effects of each can have an impact on their neighboring universes.

In fact, not only do universes, or "realities" exist side by side, but also as superset and subset; much like a computer program. This explains not only the origins of our universe, but also many other unexplained phenomena in ours. Ghosts, for example, are a fragment of other dimensions. Humans are intrinsically linked with the entire universe, and can, under the right conditions, alter their perception to become attuned to the greater realities. However, it is difficult for humans to picture and understand a "4D" world, much as it would be difficult for a 2D being to understand a 3D world.

Our reality is a subset of another reality, and ours is in turn the superset of another. At each higher plane of existence, there exists a cause/effect relationship which can be discovered scientifically. You could say that the laws of physics are different for each reality, but as a general rule, the higher up you go, the more relaxed and general they become. What is impossible in our universe, may be possible in one above ours.

Thus, while the origin of our universe may make no sense when defined within the laws of OUR reality as we know it, it makes perfect sense within the context of another reality; of which we are the product.

Now that that is out of the way, the actual story revolves around several secret societies that have been waging a power struggle since before history. These groups can trace their origins back before even the first civilizations, to shamans and more attuned human beings who could see more of reality than others. For the sake of simplicity, let's give one of these groups the working title of, "Templars." The societies (haven't established official number yet) each have a different agenda and direction in which they want to take the world, as well as their own way of approaching things. For the longest time, the power struggle between them has been sort of an ebb and flow, where one organization might steer the world in one direction, only to be displaced by another for a time.

And of course, all of them have in common the fact that they have managed to travel to at least several dimensions. Only one is really well explored, however. The world of...well I haven't figured out a title yet :D

So, amid all of this, the world is a fantasy-like place whose technological and cultural level lies roughly at the equivalent of medieval times for humans. There are elves, humans, a variety of creatures that can only be described as mythical on Earth, magic, etc.. In fact, this world is the very place from which numerous Earth myths come from. The olympian Gods were beings from this world, who carried over some of their magical powers and influence, and actually swayed people into believing that they were gods. And there are other such examples of cross-contact between the worlds.

Even though there is magic on this world, the one law common between all realities is the law of cause/effect. Nothing happens without a cause for that would be chaos. What we might think of as magic is for them physics, even though they also think of it as magic.

Now, amid all of this are some great changes brewing that will have a drastic and profound impact upon both worlds. One of the organizations, dedicated to evil (cliche ye? placeholder for now) has recently gained the upper hand, but in a much more permanent fashion, and they will soon cement it if not for some serious intervention. This means disaster for both worlds.

Amid all of this, the world periodically has champions that rise up and cause great changes to occur. These are, of course, from our world. They are hailed as great wizards or fighters, although upon closer inspection it is usually found that they have some advantages or magic of their own (or even just skills and knowledge from Earth) that they gain upon arriving/come with, which gives them a huge boost over the others in that world.

All of this sounds pretty fantasy-ish, ye?

Well the story will start off with a team of elite SEAL and SAS cooperating jointly on a mission in Africa. The details of their mission are not immediately apparent, except that they were sent to rescue hostages hailing from several countries, taken by local warlords. The team goes missing under extremely bizarre circumstances, and a force recon unit is dispatched to figure out what the hell is going on.

They find nothing. No trace of the team. It's as if they completely vanished off the face of the Earth. Only some of the hostages make it back; the rest go missing along with several force recon members.

From there, the search eventually turns up nothing and the case is closed amid highly uncomfortable and borderline paranormal activity. Nothing adds up.

But of course, the SEALS/SAS actually turned up in-surprise surprise-the alternate universe. So did the missing hostages and force recon team members.

Player characters can start off as members of the force recon, or as locals of this alternate world. The SEALS/SAS will come in later. You can also start off as one of the civilians that got pulled through. All in all, there will be less than 10 people total that get pulled through. The rest will be locals.

The SEALS/SAS go to ground and blend in with the natives. They generally end up separated, however. Same with the force recon. The story starts out with the force recon split up (a couple of members actually) and trying to figure out what is going on, where they are, where their team is, and also eventually making first contact with the locals.

They will eventually unite with the missing SEAL/SAS and the story goes from there. First though, I am thinking they will end up at a castle, get into a fight, etc. They will have their guns with them at first, but the ammo will eventually run out and they will be forced to adapt to the world they find themselves in.

Cue main storyline.
