Introduction
21st June 1906 20:00 PM
This is the most hazardous thing I’ve ever worked on. I can see why they haven’t informed the government. I don’t think they’ll ever let me leave, after tomorrow I don’t think I’ll ever want to. I fear that this will be the life and the death of me.
1st July 1906 3:00 PM
We’ve had a breakthrough. We can now open a hole as big as a molecule. If we could only get it bigger we’d be able to see through into the world beyond. What will be there we do not know, some say it is heaven. Some say it is a new world, more prosperous than America. Clark warned that it could be the opposite.
30th October 1906 22:37 PM
What have we done?

In 1906 select scientists from all over the world travelled to the North Pole. The public were told that they were just doing some routine tests on the ice. The governments were told that the North poles magnetism could lend itself to breakthroughs in energy use and power. They said that who ever had a share in this breakthrough would be rich.
This was all a lie.
A group of scientists had gone out there three years before and discovered a fallen asteroid. It contained a combustible substance that’s flame could burn a hole in worlds. If used properly. They worked with the substance for three years before they felt ready to use it. They called in some of the best scientific minds in 1906 when they were ready to run a course of experiments.
They opened a small hole, some warned against going further. But of course they continued to burn through the fabric of the world until the hole was a hand span in width. Cautiously the scientists moved forward to peer through. They got within a foot of the whole when a face appeared on the other side, a charcoal black face with red eyes and gleaming teeth. Forcing its head through horns could be seen on its grotesque head. It let out a spine tingling roar then braced its hands against the sides of the hole and ripped it apart.
The scientists fled as hundreds, no thousands, of demons poured through to do to this world what they had done to theirs. Drain it of every resource it had to offer.
Present day. 2206.
300 A.E. (After the End) and the human population has seriously decreased. There is probably one settlement (called Life Systems) of around 100 people in each country. They live in underground systems, with limited supplies and breaking technology. The people in the Life Systems are split into groups, are given their group at birth and trained in their needed skill from the day they can walk. The best in each group make up the ‘ruling class’ The main groups are these.
Army: It is not like the army we know today as each person is noticed as having a ‘skill’ as they grow and are eventually put into a faction for that skill. E.G. accuracy, strength, speed etc.
Maintenance: These people keep things running in the Life System and must study old books and (If they have access) computers to learn how to work the technology. (Anything that works on electricity is tech) of course their jobs have become harder as the demons drain resources.
Scavengers: Very important job, these people go to the surface frequently, with an Army guard, to scavenge for food and other items that may be useful in the Life System.
Cooks: Again extremely important. Self explanatory.
De-Mans: These are chosen before the child is even born. The humans have found a way to fuse demon DNA with human DNA whilst the child is still in the womb. The child is then born with the important attributes that the demons have, such as the ability to sap energy from live things and resources. They also have heightened senses, reactions, speed and strength as well as healing faster. They look human save for one demon attribute, which can be eye colour, hair colour, horns, tail, claws etc. These people are called De-Mans and have only been active in Life Systems for the last twenty years. Some think that the way these De-Mans are treated is unfair. From birth they are taken from their parents and trained, this isn’t dissimilar from what happens to those in the army but with the De-Mans it is harsher. They are not seen as humans and live with other De-Mans as it is thought that if they spend too much time with the humans their demon side will take over. Currently De-Mans run missions (with highly ranked army men/women) to find and attack surface demons, keeping them away from the entrances to the Life Systems.
The Demons roam the world above, if they find a settlement they destroy it. They are very hard to kill due to their ability to recharge their energy if they touch you. They have hard armour plated skin and heightened senses as well as strength and speed. Luckily they are not overly intelligent, there are primal, working in packs. They come in many different shapes and sizes. They will roam Earth until they have sapped every resource and life force. There are thousands of them, but the killing of Earth is proving slow. Apparently, they like it here.
Plot
Recently the Demons have been attacking the London Life System more and more frequently, having well and truly taken control of the north this Life System (Built beneath England, London) is barely hanging onto control. People are beginning to blame the De-Mans for the frequent attacks, saying that if it weren’t for them trying to push north then the demons wouldn’t be too bothered by them. But the De-Man general knows that this is a war, and the way you win wars is by taking over land. Soon though the demons will mass together and stage their main attack. Will the London Life System band together and fight? Or bicker to their deaths?

"Do you want to attract more of them?" He almost shouted at her, his face close to hers so that the ferocity of his gaze shocked her. "That's all we need, the human to give away our position and kill more of us."
She punched him. Hard. He reeled, his grip releasing her, but he didn't go down in fact she had not even left a mark. "You bastard." she wanted to hurt him for that, she wanted to know that someone was hurting as much as she was. Ty would never understand, he was her friend, she knew he hadn't meant what he said. But hated him for putting that doubt in her mind. One of the door guards had started coming over now, it seemed that they had finally noticed the state that the two of them were in. As the adrenaline seeped out of her she began to feel all of her injuries. Nothing was broken but she was covered in deep gashes that would need stitching. Ty was fine, he'd already began to heel.
"Are you two okay?" One of the guards, Patch, asked, the older man had probably seen her hit Ty but he wouldn't say anything. He wouldn't get involved with a De-Man.
"Just need to go to the infirmary." Tyler smiled at him and the guard nodded, glad to be able to go back to his stupid little booth. She couldn't help but feel like he should have responded to their radio for back up, instead of a few guards from the South who had gotten there too late. Then again sometimes a call from a De-Man went unanswered. She felt Ty touch her shoulder and recoiled from from. "Cath..."
"Don't." She walked away, limping slightly, heading to get herself sorted out. She told herself that if Tyler followed she'd shoot him. Luckily for him, he didn't.

Edgar looked over at Samuel from his lab station.
" You know Samuel, I heard there are some scavengers who are willing to find some lost informations on that subject if you know, give them a little dough. "
Samuel groaned.
" Yeah, like I got any bloody quid. "
Edgar laughed.

Another all-nighter spent on perfecting his weapon had ended up with him researching materials on his make-shift computer. He'd set up the terminal himself, having spent alot of time putting it together and getting it running. It was one of the more simple things he'd done in his mind.
Right now, Max was sat awkwardly at the desk, leant on the keyboard, his forhead on the desk infront of it. One hand rested on the open book beside him and the other arm acted as a rather uncomfortable pillow. It was plain to see that he'd been in the middle of doing something, as he even had his goggles over his eyes; hiding his closed eyes and giving them the perfect darkness for a nap.
He hadn't even meant to fall asleep. He was just going to look something up, and then make himself a strong caffine filled drink to keep him going for another hour or so. He'd curse himself for drifting off when he woke up, but be a little glad that he wasn't so foggy minded. For now, the sound of soft snores and the hum of his computer filled the little workshop that he called home.
OOC Notes
The buzzing sound filled the air but ended with a stern response "We dont have all day fox, get those people out before more demons come" Nodding he glanced around the corner again, taking in the situation before ending the radio communications after a "yes, sir"
Looking back at the scavengers he replied calmly "bed down get what rest you can, I need to think"

Chiyen redoubled her speed, straining her ears for the slight echoes of her steps, trying to discern the lay of the ground before her. It was easy enough to sense the group of six or seven men behind her, all bigger than her, all too drunk to resist smacking her around, but not drunk enough that she could take them all on at once without anyone getting hurt. It would be easy to incapacitate them. It would be easier to kill them. But she would pay for harming a human, either through blood or through hunger. That was the way the Life System worked. A human could do practically whatever he wanted with her, but she would be punished if she retaliated. Some of the other De-Mans had excelled to the point that most of the others practically treated them like humans, but with Chiyen's ebony skin and flaming hair, she looked like she had just stepped out of hell. No one would ever mistake her demon blood.
So instead, she ran, slipping lithely around obstacles in her path despite the blindfold secured around her eyes. It was easy enough, it was what she had been trained to do. Unfortunately, she had not perfected it.
The glass bottle was still half full of liquid when it struck her on the back of the head, shattering against her reenforced skull. Chiyen crumpled and was intensely aware of the skin around the wound breaking open, her blood, which was the same red hue of a human's, flowing down the back of her neck. The men behind her descended into gales of stupid laughter and then they were upon her, pulling on her hair, pummelling her with their fists and feet. They knew they weren't hurting her permanently, that they couldn't really. That was the sport of it. They could do whatever they wanted with her and it didn't matter. Not really.
Chiyen curled into a ball and covered her head like a good De-man and counted to sixty and she felt her bones creaking. Suddenly, with a movement too fast for her attackers to follow, she reached into a cylindrical tube on her back and drew out a long shaft of metal, one that glowed a hot red at her touch. The men drew back, sober enough to realize that she was done playing their games.
"Enough," she said, her voice made even more menacing by its soft, innocent nature. "Scatter."
Like true cowards, they left when they were told. ONce she was alone, Chiyen lay wearily on the ground once more, breathing and waiting for her body to heal. There were no tears. This was just another day.

Moving closer he decided it looked like an armadillo he had seen in a book once. Giant, spiked and covered in armor, all but its face. throwing a his bowie knife at the wall opposite the beast it turned towards the sound predictably and taking his chance he ran and slid under the demon, shooting up into its softer underbelly and exposed jaw, barely dodging the hot blood that spilled out like a waterfall. coming to a stand, he picked up his bowie knife and sheathed it to the sound of something falling. Looking back he saw the demons corpse, with a soft whistle the scavengers came down, and Fox contiuned on the path to the Life System, they had to leave as the nearby demons would come and consume their friends corpse.
Finally coming to a side door, he pushed his card against the scanner and the door opened, the scavengers rushed in. The soldiers on the other side escorted them to their homes. Taping his radio he messaged "mission complete", turning he pushed the button and the doors slammed shut. Walking down one of the many paths he spotted a De-man, a small ebony girl, he wasnt sure if her hair was naturally red or from the blood, but the cloth over her eyes, as well as the ears told him she was a De-man. Stopping he knelled and pulled out his small medi-kit "Are you ok? do you need any help?"
OOC Notes
"Help?" she repeated softly, considering. She reached up, picking a few stray shards of glass from the wound on her scalp. "No. I will be back to normal in a few hours," she said finally. She hauled herself into a sitting position with a groan and wiped her nose. The man at her side smelled like metal, like he had been outside recently. And his movements were far too slow and assured for him to be a scavenger. He must have been a soldier. "All of the glass is gone I think."

" Hi children, i'm going to be your new instructor starting from today. " Samuel said with a smile. Looking at them reminded him of his time as a child student, eager to learn, ignorant of the world's tragedy. Samuel wrote his name on the wall and faced the classroom.
" From today we're starting on mathematics. You're all very bright children, and I know you're all going to grow up to help make this world a better place. "
Samuel knew that many of the children were orphans, and that none of them had even seen a demon. They've only heard stories. These children were in class E-4, meaning that they were being trained to become soldiers. Many of them would die once they hit the fields.
Samuel clenched his jaw and held back tears knowing this.
OOC Notes
Looking her over, he decided she had been attacked by a group of people. He had seen it done before and stopped it when he can, although he couldn't be everywhere at once he said in a soft voice to not frighten her "I will not hurt you, I promise. If you wont let me disinfect it, I will stay here with you anyways to make sure no one comes back until you are good enough to protect yourself"
OOC Notes
The cold concrete walls were clear of any ornate, and had started to breed mildew, not having been wiped for weeks since the last janitor's spine dangled from the mouth of a demon as it ran off after a sucessful breach. Things had quieted down a bit since then, and the halls didn't sound of dying patients every night. Nor did fresh blood constantly carpet the floor. And the wounded could actually read in the precious few hours of lighting granted to them every day by the newely installed lightbults hanging from the ceiling.
The sound of the iron doors clanking open stole Charm's attention away from his book, and he quickly turned his head toward the figure who had just entered. Seeing Cathy limp in, he put on his face of nonchalance and casually turned over in his bed to face her. However, the gash in his stomach quickly flared up again, and he winced.
"Sup Cat," Charm's grin formed as quickly as the pain resided, "tough day in the fields, huh?"
A nurse quickly rushed over to attend to Cat, seating her down on an empty bed. The previous occupant had left in a body bag only about two or three days after Charm was brought in with a case of missing-half-his-stomach. What God giveth he taketh away.
"You alright kiddo?" asked Charm. They were of the same age, but Charm had always felt the role of an older brother
Seeing Cathy's despondent expression, he frowned. Turning to the cans of juice on his nightstand, Charm tossed one toward Cathy and opening the second for himself.
"Oh c'mon...tell me, tell me, what happened? No more cookies left? Tyler beat you to the kill again? Lucas broke up with you again? Couldn't be tha-"
A gut feeling told Charm he had crossed a line. Looking back at Cathy, he noticed her eyes welling.
"Oh shit...Lucas...was he?....good lord...."
This conversation had started well...
OOC Notes
All of these thoughts flashed though her mind while her fingers continued to skim gently over her scalp, probing for glass. "Why would you want to do that?" she muttered, half to herself. "I... would be very grateful for your help," she said softly after a moment. She didn't know whether or not she could get an infection, but it was better to be safe than to find out. And she had no intention of turning down a rare show of kindness.
OOC Notes
She set her gun aside as it dawned on Charm, then shrugged out of her heavy jacket. The nurse then told her to take off her trousers, Cathy wriggled out of them, the gash in her thigh twinging. There were no curtains in the infirm, just a waste of material as far as everyone was concerned. She sat in her torn cotton t-shirt, the nurse not making too many comments as she fiddled about with bandages, they were so used to injured soldiers that hardly any of them really cared any more. They just shut out the blood.
She looked to Charm, he seemed to be waiting for something now, an explanation perhaps. "Tyler is fine." she gave a half smile as she reached up and pulled her hair band from her dishevelled hair. "It was a routine patrol, you know? Lucas was in charge, he tried to play the hero when they ambushed us. You know what he's like." she sighed, "Those bastards in the east wing didn't bother responding to our distress call, three De-Men and a human officer can handle themselves right?" she gave a bitter laugh, wincing as the nurse bandaged her leg. She looked Charm over, "How about you? How's that thing scarring up?" she pulled her hair over one shoulder and began to brush her fingers through it. Talking about it hadn't hurt as much as she'd thought it would. It was just another death, right? Damn, she'd miss him though.

Sarin saw a group of scavengers come in and they looked frightened. She bit her lip. She hated going to the surface, she was always frightened. Sarin hadn't gone in today as she had a routine checkup. She was found to be ok, just a little undernourished, which the doc gave her a big meal and told her to eat. Food was scarce here so sometimes if you weren't "popular" it was hard to get a good meal.
She admired the soldiers. Not only did they have the courage to go out everyday, they protected the scavengers, fighting the demons. She could never do that job. When one looked in her direction she turned away and went back to the small nook just off the street that was her home now. No one cared enough to give her a real home. She had been on her own since she was very young. It was amazing what young kids could do when forced.
She sat down on the makeshift cot and remembered when her mother had tried to run away with her. They had gone to the surface when her mother was near the time of the birth. She had said they were going somewhere better, a kinder underground. Sarin was young and she believed anything her mother said. Then her mother began to go into labor and she was frightened. Her mother had screamed and screamed and Sarin began to cry thinking the demons would come. She then heard voices she recognized. Her mother had tried to pull her, but Sarin was too scared. She ran back to the men. She remembered the soldier who had picked her up and took her home. She watched as her mother ran away, deep into the unknown.
Sarin lived with the guilt everyday of being too scared to go with her mother. She assumed them dead because she couldn't imagine a pregnant woman escaping the wrath of the demons. They had moved her from tech to scavenging after, punishing Sarin for something she had no part in. Sarin knew the leader intended to force her to carry a de-man as punishment. She hated the leader, she silently wished a demon would take him. He was always cruel to her and the de-mans. Sarin laid down and took the baby blanket her mother had knitted for her, it was the only thing she had left. She wrapped it around her and sighed. Tomorrow morning she would go on the surface again. Part of Sarin wished a demon would take her so she could stop being scared and be free of this miserable place.

Pulling out a half empty bottle of peroxide he stopped and said with a smile "I guess I lied when I said I wouldn’t hurt you, this will sting a little but it will be over soon" he took out a cotton swab and soaked it in the peroxide. With the swab he cleaned her cuts, trying to make it quick and as painless as possible. Lastly he took out some bandages and wrapped the wounds. She said they would heal fast but he wasn’t one for chances. Finished he leaned back and examined his work.
"See it wasn’t too bad"
As if on cue a man walked by and seeing the De-man hurt he smirked at her state. Fox glanced at him from the corner of his eye, not giving him much thought until the man began to hock as if to spit on her. In one fluid movement Fox pulled his .45 and aimed it at the man’s mouth. The man’s eyes widened and he went deathly steel. Fox spoke with an icy calm, which did nothing to hide his anger.
“I swear if anything comes out from your mouth, than this bullet goes in”
Nodding the man walked slowly away, before running. He would no doubt complain to the powers that be, but Fox didn’t care

"Who are you, soldier?" she asked softly.

"My frequency is 94.3, if you ever need help: food, a place to sleep or someone to scare people off don’t hesitate to call me and I will be there as soon as I can... and whats your name?"
OOC Notes
"My name is Chiyen. Chiyen Hueme. You're... quite strange, Fox. Is there a specific reason you would rather spend your time babysitting a De-man than doing whatever it is humans do with their time?" She extended a hand to help him up as she spoke, her voice void of all mocking, but genuinely curious. She doubted he was enough of an outcast himself. Soldiers were usually in good standing since they went around saving people all of the time.

Charm grimaced a bit, and decided it would probably be better to let the subject stand for a while. He sighed, and placed his book on the nightstand.
"Well, it's alright, I guess. Going to leave a mark though..."
He cautiously lifted his shirt, revealing his bandaged covered abdomen. A streak of dried blood ran from left to right.
"Doctor said I could probably leave in two or three days", Charm smiled as he pulled his shirt back down, "I could definetly use the excercise myself."
Charme turned to the sniper rifle leaning next to his bed and hoisted it up to arm level
"So I'll be able to cover your ass on the field from a distance like old times". He shot Cathy a thumbs up alongside a cheesy grin.

"Is it wrong for me to stop when I see someone hurt? I suppose the question why never really entered my mind. I have my reasons to want to help De-man when I find them, but if you want to know why. Well that I at least want you to take me out to dinner first" Most of it was a lighthearted joke, as he wanted to lighten up the situation.

Edgar looked up from his microscope. " Oh.. the one Fox's expedition brought in last week? No. Why? "
" Well I just checked a sample of its muscle cell's plasma membrane. You should check out its intercellular junctions. Especially its desmosomes. Bloody hell, its anchoring junctions are wrapped inside and out of the cell like a goddamn beehive.. no wonder these bastards have iron-tight muscles.. "
" Really? Huh.. " Edgar commented, staring into his test tubes.
" Are you even listening to me Edgar? "

"I..." she opened and closed her mouth and then abruptly gave up. She found that the strange light feeling in her chest was happiness. It was almost like having a friend. "Okay. We live this way," she said, nodding toward the north end of the System. "It isn't far."
