Introduction
Today is the morning of December 21st. It snowed. For weeks, people found themselves packing into subways because of the road conditions. It snowed. The sparrows fell from the sky, their wings frozen, their hearts frozen. It snowed. Commuters found themselves spending longer and longer itineraries in the city. It snowed.
It was a Wednesday. There was still school; Winter vacation began next week, right after Christmas Sunday. The new year was right around the corner, and with it a glimmer of a hope that the new year will be more kind, more warm than the last. Most businesses were to be closed on New Year's Day, if only because the snow plows were overworked and in need of repair. There was much celebration and relaxation to be had in the coming days, but, for now, today is a Wednesday, and it snowed.
Each of you, when you woke up today, probably didn't realize what today truly signified. This was the first real day of Winter, the first real day of dismal quantities of sunlight that glimmers in your office window, of eternally grey and overcast skies, of true bitter cold biting at your bared skin. You also probably never realized that you hide just as much about yourself as the planet conceals the sun this very day. What would happen if people knew about your secrets, and what do your secrets even mean to you? This day, and those in coming, will test you and your confidence, your vision of ethics, and will make you question yourself whether it is better to remain ignorant of the world around you, or to be wise and miserable.
Today is Wednesday, December 21st, the first day of Winter; it snowed. What will you do today?
Rules
- Characters are to be approved before being submitted into this roleplay.
- When creating a character, keep in mind that they are regular human beings. You don't have any special powers, and you probably aren't going to walk around carrying weapons unless it's part of your job.
- Character profiles should be short and sweet. Give me a description of your appearance (apparent age, hair style, hair color, typical clothing, accessories, etc) so that everyone can get a picture of what the person looks like. Also, make sure to give a small personality snippet, as well as an idea of what home life is like for the character.
- All characters have the option to be submitted into the main experiment of the story: In private, I will assign you an extra bit of backstory for your character. This can be anything from "Your character has latent psychic powers" to "You are a government agent looking for an assassin" to "You have violent tearful outbursts when reminded of your childhood" to "You are the prince of Latvia." You do not have to reveal your extra backstory in your profiles, though you should edit the relevant information in your profile to reflect your status. You may opt out of this extra process, but do know that it is preferable that you submit to it; after all, no one person can choose everything that happens in their life, and your characters shouldn't expect the same treatment.
- Each player will have one character, unless I decide otherwise later.
Extra posting rules are as follows:
- I expect this to be a free-form roleplay with writing in a typical novel structure; that is, there should be full sentences and paragraphs. You should try to aim for at least two paragraphs a post, though it is entirely welcome for you to post more than that. If you're trapped in a dialogue between characters, and a single paragraph is all you need, then by all means do so. Just don't make a habit out of making super-short posts or absurdly lengthy ones; remember that other players are reading your posts and are seeking a means of entertainment out of doing so.
- Posting style is hybrid open/closed; You cannot control other people's characters, and you can't normally 'instant-hit' or 'god-mod' where applicable. However, if the other character has absolutely no reason to make a reaction (i.e. A slap to the face after a character makes an insult, or someone grabbing your character by the collar as they attempt to jump in front of a train,) then it is perfectly reasonable to have some actions be closed. Unless, of course, they were expecting to get backhanded for calling a woman fat to their face, then they can totally duck out of the way and run like heck.
- Your characters can't do everything. If you're going to come up with some explanation for why your character is a super nerd about world religions or something of the sort, then go ahead, but make it reasonable and not just something that you 'picked up'.
- If there is blatant use or abuse of god-modding, or some misunderstanding between groups, then I will address the player in question either in OOC or privately. Play nice, or I will ask you to leave.
Extra Notes:
- Yes, you can have family members, and yes, you can play them. However, they are NPCs as far as the narration is concerned; the narration should follow your character alone, their thoughts, their feelings.
- Location is somewhere in the USA, northern part. Pretend it's Wisconsin or New York or Washington or something.
- If you would like, you can work with me as far as your character's "secret" is. However, anything we decide may still not be definite.

These poor, unfortunate souls were once a part of this great world, but have been abandoned. Why don't you consider viewing their profiles and making a decision on whether or not you can roleplay them accurately?

The purpose of this is to take some control out of your hands and to give you something new to work with. A lot of people I play with have difficulties adhering to certain guidelines when they have total freedom, and I find that I too enjoy when my character options are in at least partial control of the GM.
Just don't worry too much about it, you'll be fine =D
