Introduction

~ Prologue: Desperation ~

"Cavalry, the left flank!" - the baronial voice rose alike a chant past the throngs of blood-thirsty combatants, the sounds of metal lashing against metal, shields shattering and men howling alike rabid hyenas bathing the lands in desperation. "Father, at your right!" - the courageous prince yelped whilst dodging several frozen bolts launched by Delvor Magi, a polished blade impaling the barbarian aiming to decapitate the Emperor. All but one had lost the grasp of time, all but one had forgotten for how many accursed days they had been sparring upon this wretched sheet of ice. All but the King.

"May the bowels of Hell engulf you!" - his voice echoed yet again, palms unleashing a cone of crimson flames upon a patch of unexpecting archers, bodies crumbling to mere scorching remnants of their former selves. "Knights, forward, push these insolent beasts back from where they came!" - the war cry conveyed from one pair of lips to another with the breeze's assistance. "Victory" - the army sang as one whilst marching against the invaders, tongues slithering as the prospect of the day being theirs.

"Father!" - an unexpected lament drifted past the battlefield, eyes and ears drawn by the now perishing prince and the leeching soldier which claimed his corpse as his own trophy.

Was it insanity, or was it pure desperation? To this day, none can frankly say. Yet all those which have survived the clash of the two empires reminisce of the Lord and his maddening state. 'Twas like the rift between the heavens and earth itself was torn, the elements and the arcane magics which bind them flowing freely for the naked eye to see.

What was to come, no sage could foresee: a rage so great it tore the lands apart, forever banishing the Delvor empire in to the unknown. The aftermath: clasping for his son's remains, the once great King vanished, never to be seen by the likes of the Nas Revani.

Recent rumours have report sightings of a possible match somewhere in the western marshes.

~ Chapter I: The birth of Hope ~

Yet another horrific evening. Several hours had now evanesced since one too many flakes brazed the dinning-room's gargantuan windows without halt, the omens of a tempest now omnipresent. Exasperated servants slithered through grand corridors, pale hands dusting each and every spec of debris caused by the now violent storm. Thunders bellowed with bestial vigour past the horizon's line, the imperial castle seeming to twist and cower when faced with the coming blizzard. Past titanic gates the city lay dormant, wooden doors sealed, windows plastered with dozens of pelts and furs, chimneys panting with each gale leaping their peaks.

Only he remained still.

Hollow orbs fixated the scenery, arms stood crossed upon a broad chest, an aquiline nose wrinkling briefly as a sign of irritation. "Idiotic." - the male scoffed in annoyance whilst commencing to march back and forth in the council chamber. The reason for his aggravation? Two and a half days had now traversed into the beyond since his dear Queen had given the decree, the decree which announced that any and every individual willing to pursue the tracks of the late (in lack of better information) King would be granted any desire which stood in her ability if he or she were to return with evidence of the sovereign's status.

It was odd indeed, how the source of the greatest accomplishments the mortal kind had witnessed, magic, could be the source of its greatest tragedies. Memories as vivid as wounds skimmed before emerald eyes, the sight of the once indomitable Emperor relinquishing control as to embrace despair when met with his son's death on the battlefield lingering in each and every thought. He had served his rulers and the Nas Revani since a child, and since a child he had met steel with steel and arcane with arcane, but never had he seen such horrific magical capacities when one had crossed his or her limits.

"Lord Tyral, her Majesty wishes to see you." - a prodding maid spoke from behind a lightly-cracked door, a sluggish gesture of his hand motioning for the child to show her face.

"Have there been any parties seeking permission to depart?" - the male absently spoke, visibly convinced of the opposite.

"I am unaware, Sir. Yet I was told by our Lady that she is awaiting a group of folk from outside the palace. I have no other further details to offer you, I apologize. What should I inform the Queen, Lord Tyral?"

"Tell her that I shall be in her chamber in a matter of moments." - the conversation was brought to an abrupt adjournment.

Perhaps hope was still loitering about. First and foremost, one had to see this band of misfits with his own eyes as to judge their capacity. On the other hand, even if they were but a gathering of idiots, the decision would stand as firm as it was from the moment he reforged his resolve. With or without permission, when the first group would announce their coming, he would depart in search of his ruler.

~ Information ~

First and foremost, welcome to "Arcane Chapters: In search of self", a tale Co-GMed by Frozen Soul (In charge of major events and battles) and Augmentation Audit (in charge of the Universe, weather, animals creatures, NPCs such as the Queen and other situations). Here are a few pointers which will allow you to gain a better grasp of the story: the setting is Fantasy/Magical. The names of location will become apparent in posts done by Augmentation Audit. Other races will be introduced when new areas of the land will become available (to start, everybody will undertake the role of a human, possible changes might occur along the way). The land in which we are situated is entitled "Nas Revani", an often cold, dark and icy realm, its capital city being Dernala - the empire being led by both a King and a Queen (the King is an avid magic user, yet nothing is known of the queen). During a war over territory and hunting rights with a neighbouring land, Delvor Rex, the Sovereign's son had been silenced. In his grief, the King, whose magic was hinged on faith, lost his way. His faith destroyed, his magic shattered, drawing from despair to gain its centre. The King broke, entering a state that none had ever seen before; a blind state of power, twisted and terrible.

None can tell for certain what happened, but in his despair, the King shattered both rock and ice to set Delvor Rex adrift into the ocean or, possibly, destroyed the land completely; none can be sure, as none close enough to see what happened survived with their wits intact. In her grief, the Queen passed a decree, hoping to gain information in relation to her husband:

“The Queen decrees that any one person or registered band, who seek royal permission for absence from the land, who can return with evidence pertinent to the condition or healing of the King, can make a request that will be granted so long as it is in her power and does no harm another citizen of her land.”

As such, we are inviting you, the players, to come to the palace in answer to the Queen’s request.

~ Rules and Explanations ~

  • God-modding of any sort shall not be tolerated and shall be instantly dealt with.
  • We want this RP to be literate, so if you are declined on that premise AugmentationAudit will assist you in improving if you so desire.
  • One-lines are not accepted. Three healthy paragraphs when posting are a minimum requirement.

  • As GM and Co-GM, what ever is instructed by myself and AugmentationAudit is law for this roleplay. Please keep that in mind.
  • Mary-Sues of any sort shall more than likely be declined - please avoid these characters. If you are declined on this reason, AugmentationAudit is willing to help you.
  • Please follow the character sheet exactly. Take your time with the creation process - characters which were slapped together in two minutes will have fewer chances of being accepted.
  • Rules can be bent, added or removed throughout the story at either the GMs or Co-GMs wish. Please ensure you read this thread from time to time as to keep yourself updated.
  • This is a Fantasy setting, please keep your IC language, gear and items in check with the scenery. No lord uses: "Fuck it." every other two words whilst carrying a chaingun in his pocket.

Magic: Our magi operate in a slightly different manner than custom dictates - the ability to conjure and bend the elements and arcane arts is drawn from one's most powerful emotion, be it love, hatred, anger, ignorance, arrogance or any of the likes. Your ability to muster said emotion represents your magical aptitude. Yet, here comes the trick: each and every magic user (if you so choose as to apply for one) has a certain limit which he or she can only unveil in battle or at a time of great emotional upheaval (when attempting to push yourself further and further). If, by mistake or mediocrity you surpass said limit, your humanity and ration are lost and you become a mere vessel for the twisted energies which now hold dominion over your body (in short, when ever a Magi transcends past his limit, he becomes berserk). It is unclear whether there is a cure for such thing, as most who ever end up in such a situation are killed rapidly in the heat of the moment or by their own hand. Such has happened with the King, though it is unclear whether he still lives or if he perished.
