A month had passed since Michale had received his letter and uniforms. His parents couldn't have been more proud, his brothers more envious. But the support regardless of who knew the Sears was overwhelming. They had even pitched in to get Michale enough money for travel, but Michale had left that at his house...He could make the journey himself and that was precisely what he was doing now in the back of a truck transporting dry goods to arcana. It had been a thing of coincidence he supposed. He had walked for three days making money playing games on the streets. when the truck had stopped and he had overheard the drivers destination.

Michale was a boy of action and initiative so with the trucks destination he had hopped in the back while the driver hadn't been looking and was now on a one way ticket to Archon. Michale closed his eyes as the truck made its way the school appearing on the horizon "Well its up to you now.....We cant go back not without succeeding first. Michale said to himself running a gloved hand through his hair. His face and traveling cloths where a far cry from luxurious. His clothes had been mended by his mother, and fitted for him. the cowl covered the bottom half of his face and he closed his eyes for the last little bit of his travels after all who would tell when he would be able to rest next

Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! that was all that ran through Daniel’s mind as he sprinted across the open field, Shit! Shit! Shit! Shiiiiit! another mortar popped behind him just as he dove for cover into the ruined building’s ground floor. “Shit! Whose bitchin’ idea was this anyway!?” he called out as three more bodies fell in line beside him, hiding behind the counter of the reception desk, bullets pinging off the wall.

“Give it a rest, there’s no use complaining about it now!” Anora commented as she peaked over the edge of the thick concrete slab following a break in the enemies fire, only to have to duck again as the shooting resumed with greater zeal, “We’ve got to hold off until-yikes, ricochet!- until the General gets into position! You knew what you were in for when you joined this stupid unit didn’t you!?” she jumped up at another small break and put her hand forward, a blue orb of energy amassed in her palm and launched off a beam of thick light that jest melted into a blue spot on the broken concrete where their opponents hid. They burst up in response and fire again, forcing her to take cover again, “Bastards, take this!” with a snap of her fingers the blue spot of energy detonated, bring down the already crumbling floor the shooters occupied, along with two more above it.

Concrete shards came scattering into the building as its neighbor groaned under the explosion, the second man behind the cover grabbed at his face, “OW! Watch it Anora, those kinds of spells aren’t the best to use in a crumbling city!” he commented before looking over the wall himself to see the damage. He brought his sword up just in time to block an incoming bullet, a slug by the slow speed and shape of it, which grazed his ear on its deflected path. “More of ‘em” the man swung his sword ar a line of rocky debris on the top of the counter, sending the shards of stone flying as if hit by a bat at extreme speed to crash into the area their opponents were occupying. Another bullet grazed his arm and he yelled as he fell back behind the barrier, “Ah! I’m hit. Damn that stings.” He hissed knowing the wound wasn’t fatal but still it was just adding to the situation.

“Hang on, Colonel, I’ve got you.” The fourth man slid to the other’s side though a break in the cover put him in the open for a split second, drawing more fire to the visible movement. He ignored it though and held his hand to the wound, a soft golden glow irradiating as multiple complex circles scribed in runes appeared in thin air, “Nothing serious, but it looks like you got a nerve cluster hit, I was more worried, you’re normally not a baby like this.”

“Up yours, Cap, I’m normally able to hit back, instead of being stuck here feeling useless…” he began to put his head up and another volley hit, “Jeez! They are pretty gun how on those damn triggers… Daniel, I count five. Think you can take ‘em if we run decoy?”

“Are you insane!” the captain who was healing the Colonels wounds asked as two more rounds hit the space next to him. “Damn it Artemis, this isn’t funny, I can’t raise the dead you know!”

“We don’t have much choice Sam, if we miss the rendezvous the General is bound to come looking for us and that’s the mission, gone, we got to try!” Artemis looked over to Daniel, “You got this right?”

Chuu… Just who do you think you’re talking too?” Daniel smirked as he brought his two pistols up to the ready, three circles appearing floating above the barrel. “On your count, Colonel…”

“One…” Artemis cocked himself to the ready, Anora doing the same with her fist already sheathed in blue energy.

“Two…” Daniel’s left eye was covered by the same seal that floated above his guns’ barrels as he too got lower in preparation of the assault. The other man, Sam, was muttering something with his eyes closed, several glowing seals appearing over the vital areas of the Colonel.

“Go!”

Artemis burst into the air, roaring, sword held high. He swung the blade at a column, sending more chunks of stone at their opponents, yet that did little to nothing. As the opponents jumped up and took aim Anora let fly with a bolt of energy, sending one of the foes into the dark behind them. He wasn’t going to get up. The other four, however began to fire, aiming for the Colonel who was rushing in a serpentine pattern toward them.

“Six left, you’re count was off , Colonel.” Daniel commented as he raised one gun and fired, without truly bringing it to his eye. He repeated this five times until all of their opponents fell. The colonel had reached their entrenchment and with a mighty swing took out the column holding up the room their foes had taken shelter in. The roof collapsed sending a flurry of dust and a gust of wind out; blowing the shoddy clothing they wore behind him.

Phew! That was a close one, next time I’ll bring some projectile weapons.” Anora commented as she stretched toward the dusk filled sky with a groan of stress. She looked to the Colonel who turned about, several spots of his clothing showed red stains form wounds he’d received in the charge, and as the golden seals faded a faint clinking could he heard as small dark pellets dropped form the air before him. Right between his eyes a pellet stood fast, held by some invisible force, that bullet was the last to fall.

“Thanks for the shields, Sam, you’re a literal lifesaver.”

“Next time you want to do something stupid, Colonel, find another med corp to drag into it!”

“Yeah, yeah, I’ll be more careful… Anora, let’s move out, the rally point is three blocks north.”

All the others stood and nodded, “Sir!”

-=-=-=-

The group gathered up and began to march again, heading deeper into the bombed out city. The summer breeze of the lower plains didn’t reach this far north, didn’t come near these border cities that had been destroyed and abandoned during the current war with Kleznia, the huge country to the north east (think soviet union). These militia men and insurgents were a real pain in the ass. But it wasn’t them that Daniel had on his mind as they turned the bend to the next street. He saw the around three hundred yard stretch of open street before him and gulped. The others were slightly on edge by it too but they weren’t snipers, not like him, they had worried about the pillbox they ran into back a few clicks, but the moment he’d seen this stretch he’d got chills up his spine. “Delryn…you got visual right? This place is a sniper’s paradise…” Daniel called over the radio, hearing a burst of static from the other end.

The street dead ended at a destroyed church, only the old bell tower remained. Now that he got a look at it Daniel doubted that the sniper would be in there, the tower was too damaged, unstable, and with the bell sitting right in the line of fire he’d only be able to see one side form that location, not to mention the range was incredible, he could do it but how many insurgents could? No, if it was him he’d be in the office building to the right, which is just where he’d suggested Delryn go. “On your toes guys, there’s little to no cover to speak of here, if it were me this is where I’d have set that pillbox.”

“Good thing the enemy isn’t you.” Anora commented, Artemis grunted in agreement.

Sam looked form building to building as they walked, each one more bombed out and unstable than the last, he’d never set foot in any of them, they were bound to come down form a rat scurrying over their floors, “Come on Daniel, this place isn’t habitable for even you, that church tower is about to-”

Crack!

The world slowed as Daniel looked to his side, a streak of red splattered the concrete, a single plash marking his cheek as Sam’s body fell back. Daniel didn’t need to be in the medical corp to know that he was dead. That shot was perfectly placed, right through the neck. He cursed as his instincts took over and he dove right, jumping behind a burned out husk of a bus. Artemis had grasped a shocked Anora and leapt into the second story of a nearby building, his powerful legs making a jump like that easy.

“Shit! Sam is down! Repeat! Squad mate down! Delryn, did you see the source?” Daniel had been watching the right side building but hadn’t seen a flash, maybe the eye in the sky had. Another shot rang out and a pang indicated the buss had been hit; he was aiming for Daniel, lucky sucker had picked the right targets, the medic and the sniper.

“Shit, not our lucky day.” Artemis commented over the short range com.

Ethelyn had her feet up on the dashboard of one of her daddy's delivery trucks, this was her preferred way to get school, mostly because of the guy in the driver seat. "Peter, how much longer?" Ethelyn spoke up for the first time in about an hour. "My snakes woke up." she looks concerned to the cargo area of the truck. "This is a dry goods shipment right? Nothing they could damage?"

The three snakes: A green tree python (Branch), a Boa Constrictor (Willow), and a red cornsnake (Pyro), had traveled home with her while she was on leave and were returning with her for the next semester, not wanting to bring her tanks back and forth she had a set at school and a set at home, currently the snakes where in separate pillow cases that were loosely tied, she sensed aura fluctuation which may have meant the snakes were awake and squirming their ways out of the bags, they were all too smart for their own good.

"I'm sure their fine, and there isn't anything they can damage back there unless some mice hitchhiked." Peter comforted her with a small kiss on her cheek, he always hated this back to school crap. He wasn't one for fighting, Lyn had a fire within her and he wasn't about to stop her from going back to Archon, no matter how many scars she always seemed to come back with.

"You always know what to say don't you?" Ethelyn smiled and enjoyed the thought of her snakes hunting out any vermin in the back of the truck. "But maybe could we stop somewhere so I can check?" She pleaded.

"We can't. Your father's orders, no pit-stops." Peter replied unwillingly.

"And when have we ever followed my Father's orders?" She teased, "If we're running late I'm sure you can drive faster."

In the next town Peter pulled over to the side of the road and walked around to help Lyn out of the truck, she pushed his hand out of the way and jumped out. Miss independent. He rolled his eyes. She leaned into him and gave him a real kiss.

"Thank you!" She said flirtatiously and spun around to rush to the back of the truck. With a burst of strength she pulled open the door and jumped in. "Willow! Pyro! Branch!" Are you all okay in here!" she yelled concerned as she began rummaging through stuff to find her snakes.

Peter nonchalantly leaned on the side of the truck and lit a cigarette, might as well use the stop to his advantage.

Ethelyn did not see Michale coming when he suddenly came out of the piles of supplies. Surprised she was not able to counter his forward momentum and was knocked off balance as she neared the edge of the truck bed and the two of them fell on the ground her on the bottom and him on top. She landed with a harsh thud and the feeling of his extra weight was not pleasant on her chest. With a growl she used basic skills to roll him off and gain the upper hand as she buckled her legs around him as she pulled a dagger concealed in her clothes and held it to his throat.

"Explain yourself!" She said with a hiss. The snakes responded to her fuming aura and willow, the large one most of the way around the victim's chest began to constrict, and poked his head out from under the tattered shirt of the boy flicking its tongue happily at Ethelyn.

Michale stared in shock as his world was turned upside down. He gave a short lived smirk as he had landed on apparently a female but that was short lived as suddenly he was held at. Dagger point and she didn't seem to be to happy with the situation. Before Michale could reply to the girls demands he could feel a snake tightening around his abdomen squeezing him tightly. Michale raised his hands in defeat. "Just catching a ride miss..." Michale struggled to get the words out as he squirmed slightly

Peter wandered over at the sound of a struggle, not too concerned, Lyn could handle herself if there was a problem. He rose his eyebrows when he found Lyn holding a boy down, dagger drawn, and snake strangling the poor kid.

"Bull shit where are you going?" Ethelyn pressed the dagger down threateningly closer.

"It's a hitchhiker, relax. You're not at school yet, us civilians aren't all bad, give the kid a break." Peter said trying to sooth Lyn.

Her muscles relaxed and she sheathed the dagger hiding it in her clothes once again. She vaults off of him backwards with crazy aerobics that Peter smiled at. The snake remains on the kid hitting his cheek with the tickle of its tongue, Willow was a big girl and was sturdy as a tree she wasn't moving anytime soon.

"I still want your name and where you're going, hitchhiker." She hissed with venom, holding herself back from skinning this guy for even thinking he could get a cheap ride was enough of a crime for her to justify any actions. But Peter was right, the real world wasn't all that bad.

Michale eyed the snake minding himself to remain calm and trying to word his sentence very carefully. He had been told to be careful what the wished for and sometimes it seemed his mouth gave him just that..."My name Is Michale Sear, and I'm going the same place that this truck is going...Archon." Michale said as he shifted then squirmed slightly then with a great deal of effort shimmied his way out of the snakes coils. He was slow and methodical in his movements as to not startle the snake. He finally took a chance to look the girl over. She was older than him...and was well off to say the least. After a few moments of struggle Michale's upper body was free enough and he was satisfied with that. He reached up and pulled his cowl down so she could see his face. "You see unlike most people who get into Archon and come from wealthy family's Miss I come from a rather poor family and couldn't justify buying a ticket on the mana rail...So I chose a more familiar way for me to travel. But I would hate to burden you. and you do seem a little high strung perhaps I can walk the rest of the way. its only a days walk out...I think... So If you will let me get my bag Ill help you load your goods back up and be on my way...Michale said sensing her hostility...."Or we could play a game of chance and see what the cards say about this...." Michale suggested as an alternative. his voice was smooth and while he was nervous he was confidant in his skill with cards and most games of chance after all he was one of the luckiest people he knew....and when he wasn't well....needless to say he also spent allot of time in trouble...

Ethelyn smiled, “Well I can’t let you be late for school. My name’s Ethelyn Drake Second Platoon Lieutenant. I might be the one who sends you home.” Her smile turned into a smirk. “I’ll play your game, you’ll find at the academy you have to win to succeed. So if you lose you can enjoy the walk, by the way it’s probably a 2 day’s trip.”

“Name your game.” She held her hand out a deep green earth rune on her fingertips prompting three blocks to rise out of the dusty soil by the edge of the road, a table and two chairs, they were nothing more than cubes of dirt but they would serve their purpose. With a hiss her snakes left Michale’s body, she wandered over and picked up Pyro letting him crawl up her arm under her sleeve and around her neck, his ruby red skin circled her pale white neck like a glittering jeweled necklace.

Michale Gave a grin as the python let him fully go. he was quick to reach into his clothing to retrieve a deck of worn cards as he made his way to the summoned table made of earth. he fanned all the cards out elegantly with skill and practice showing that all the cards where there and intact within the deck. "The game is simple. A single cut of the deck to a single card. highest card wins. Pure chance and odds at work" Michale said grinning as he shuffled the cards for her in front of her laying the deck square in the middle of the table. "Ladies always go first of course. And to not be rude..." Michale extended his hand to her. "My name is Michale..Michale Sear. And the pleasure is all mine." He said giving her a bit of a smile.

"Nice to meet you Michale, and since this is all luck and no skill, I hope you have the best of luck in beating me." Ethelyn smiled and shook his hand. She was sitting with poise on her short dirt block, legs crossed and back straight. Daintily she reached over to the deck and one third of the way down she split it and revealed the card to the right of the deck. Eight of Diamonds, not bad but not good either, Michale still had a chance of winning. She had cooled down now and seeing that the boy was nothing more than a student at the same academy as her she wasn't nearly as temperamental as she had been when she discovered the ratty boy in her truck.

Michale stared at the card she drew the eight of diamonds. "Well Ethelyn a fair draw, however..." Michale paused as his hand hovered for a moment before he simply Grabbed the next card down from where she had drawn. He didn't even look at it he just pulled it close to him for a moment "Im going to make a guess and say i've just won...."Michale declared as he flipped the card over, It was an Ace of spades. Michales hand traced over the image imprinted on the card for a moment as he looked up at Ethelyn to the trained eye some one would be able to see his aura almost acting and flowing like the wind in a canyon, moving with no real pattern to it other than it seemed to affect everything and nothing at the same time. "Well looks like my luck holds....Maybe just Maybe it will be enough to get me through this school..." Michale muttered quietly. He didn't understand it but the auditor had been impressed during his audition. something about Controlling Chaos and that some how related to how lucky he was. Not that it mattered after all Life is just a game..

The dull methodical thud was the only sound accompanying Kai as he made his way along the rather open looking road. He had decided to better train his endurance he would walk to the academy for a change, and all would of been well if one of his brothers did not pull a stunt which cost him a day more of waiting. But now, with a heavy sigh, he was marching along at a brisk pace, with his swords and shields on his back. Though the latter was getting a tad warm due to the sun. Pulling his hair back he glanced at the surrounding. It was empty, looked good if you were into sight seeing in the country, but empty. Slinging his bag to one side he carried not relenting in his pace.

Hours passed, and not much had changed, except one little fact, as the time went, a town on the horizon drew closer. That was until he was on its borders. Moving himself up onto a small hillock, he took a moment to himself to one scan the town, and two plan a head. He could grab something to eat from the town and a rest and head out while there was still light and pull a night march. Or he could just grab the food and head straight off again. Either way he was getting food.

Walking into town he did earn a slight curious glance or two, because his weapons were on show, yet he was not in the Archon uniform. Just a black, but slightly dirt splattered pair of trousers, and a blazer over his torso, that was it. Taking a wander through the place, he thought he may of caught lucky seeing what might of been a delivery truck, meaning a shop would be fully stocked. But he soon dispelled that notion seeing no indication of any cargo being moved. Though maybe he could gain the time he lost by hitching a ride. Even if the truck was not heading all the way, any quicker transport would be great.

Coming out the store his bag now containing some food just in case, he gave a sharp whistle. Letting it echo out slightly before shouting over towards the truck. " Hey is that thing heading towards the academy?" He had failed to notice the two round the back with their card game so therefore just assumed it was your average delivery truck. Some people were kind enough to lend a ride. Though if all else failed he would just walk to the academy. Late or not he would turn up.

Peter had moved back to his spot leaning against the side of the truck smoking while the two played their games around the back. A sharp whistle caught his ear and he turned to its' source to see a heavily armed man yelling about the academy. Peter sighed and puffed out a large cloud of smoke.

"Another hitchhiker?" he replied a little concerned after Ethelyn's reaction to the first one. He smiled though, he found hitchhikers to be interesting company, Lyn would at least have to tolerate this one for politely asking. "We're going to the Academy, but I'm warning you now there are snakes in the truck." Peter warned and then turned his head to the back for a moment as he heard Ethelyn yell in defeat.

-----------
Ethelyn's smirk cracked into frown, part of her wanted him to be able to ride with them but at the same time she didn't like that he had to beat her at this card game. Not to mention she couldn't believe that the card underneath her own was the Ace of Spades! He must have cheated she reasoned, it was the only explanation for his confidence.

"CHEATER!" She yelled and brushed the cards of the table in a tantrum. Ethelyn could handle being defeated at combat but a simple card game was an entirely different story.

"You can ride with us but know cheating is no way to survive at Archon." she hissed.

Michale smiled as he raised his hands infront of him helplessly. "I dont cheat..but luck...I am very lucky." Michale admitted and then added. "Hang around me long enough and maybe it will rub in...Also Where i come from its only cheating if you get caught..and assumptions dont count as being caught." Michale said as he carefully gathered up the cards she had scattered. he had owned teh deck for as long as he could remember handed to him by his father. a bit of a family heirloom. His fathers father had been a gambling man and lost everything this was that very deck of cards. Michales most prized possession. as he picked up the Ace of spades last he gently placed it on the top of the deck and then tucked the deck back into his worn cloths. and gave a slight bow. "Bitter or not, win or loss. Thank you for the ride I appreciate it. Michale was aware that another had approached and looked up now to look the newcomer over. He was armed that was to say the least, Michale gave him a small nod as he took a step back. "Seems like your truck might be becoming a new school buss..." michale said with a small smile.

Kai gives a nods at the hitchhiker comment, though his mind was more thinking on the company he would have for the ride since there was another one beside himself. " I would not normally bother asking for a ride, but my travels have been delayed already so anything to make up time is appreciated" he said slightly raising his brow at the snake comment " Oh i will be fine with them" he said. making his way towards the man who answered, though it was then he heard the yell from the back. " Suppose i should greet my fellow travelers" for such a large, well armed man, Kai was generally good-natured, or more so unnaturally calm then anything to do with his nature.

Moving to the rear of the truck he surveyed the scene, the end of a card game. The male had noticed and had given him a small nod. Nodding his head in return he smirked at the school bus comment. He was gonna wait until he had the females attention as well before introducing himself, but either way a ride was sorted.

"Well hello there!" Ethelyn admired the tall muscular man that had arrived on the scene with a seductive voice, what a hunk! Over the brief break she had forgotten how big some of the guys at Archon got, she had gotten used to Peter who was somewhere between these two guy's height. All admiration disappeared as Peter joined them.

"So Michale and... sorry I didn't catch your name." Peter looked to the new arrival. "You'll both ride in the back, don't damage anything or you're paying for it, that includes the snakes."

"If you kill the snakes, or even hurt them, I'll kill you." Ethelyn added before reloading Willow, Pyro, and Branch into their individual sacks.

Michale gave a small shrug as he saw her interest immediately change. Street charm only got some one so far anyways he supposed. Someone of her social standings probably had more interest elsewhere any how. "At this point I'm more concerned about my well being than the snakes... But I assure you I'm not going to be picking any fights with them." Michale said as he Michale began putting the things that had fallen out back into the back of the truck then climbed in himself. He himself figured he could get a bit more sleep before they arrived at the school. As he climbed into the back of the truck he would steal another glance at Ethelyn. and mutter under his breath. "Easy lover boy...She is way out of our league."

Kai nods down when the female noticed him, she seemed slightly family, probably seen her round campus or something during his first year. " Sorry for the intrusion" he said as she explained they were riding in the back " The name is Kai... and don't worry.... i will make sure everything is kept intact." he said as he waited until the truck was loaded again and Michale had climbed in the back before he pulled himself inside, Throwing his bag and his weapons against the wall he sat himself down before glancing one last time at the woman " Give a knock for when we get close to the academy if you would not mind" he said before turning his attention to the one in the back with him " Freshman?" he asked knowing it was gonna be still a fair drive, so a little conversation would not hurt

Michale gave a small nod pulling his cowl back up into place as he pulled out his hat and placed it on top of his head. "As a matter of a fact I am. Your definitely not a freshman though." Michale said as he glanced over all the weapons and Kai. "Im Michale Sear." He said somewhat flatly as he grabbed his only bag which was just a spare change of cloths and his school uniforms. and put it up against a few bags next to him. Fact was he was probably going to have to get a job just to support himself out here unless the kids at the school happened to be as careless with their money as people who bet it in the streets had been.
