Introduction

As the Curtain Falls

Ylanne S.

Notice:

This is a modern realistic, advanced/literate, character-driven, crime roleplay.

Players must be mature enough to handle, discuss, and portray some controversial and potentially inflammatory themes with sensitivity, discretion, and thoughtfulness.

Introduction

Co-ed fraternity Epsilon Tau Zeta at liberal arts school Davenport University in Minneapolis, Minnesota has a history of hazing its pledges, but recently, it seems the Epsilons have gone too far. Pledges have been disappearing, and campus security has begun to question the Epsilons' practices. Until now, some turned a blind eye to what they deemed essentially harmless fun. "They'll learn the hard way that their behavior won't be acceptable in the real world," one said.

That's when the first body turned up. Identified as Katie Harmon, a sophomore who had few friends and participated in fewer on-campus activities. The symbol for Epsilon Tau Zeta was inked on her body, in her own blood. The investigation turned up no witnesses or camera footage. No one willing to come forward with any information. And the only genetic evidence belongs to the victim.

Now, Davenport University officials will clamor to shut down all fraternities, to detain and question every member of Epsilon Tau Zeta. The fraternity will claim it has nothing to do with the death. And still, it will recruit new pledges. Epsilon Tau Zeta's alumni have gone on to become powerful politicians, wealthy business magnates, and internationally known artists. Their draw and influence has never been greater.

Students attend classes, grief counseling, and secret initiations. All the while, the sinister wheels of time turn. They will be forced to discover what Epsilon Tau Zeta really is, and what they themselves are capable of doing... or watching. They will question who they are, and why they do the things they do. And in the interim, they will discover that to trust anyone is a death sentence. Because Katie Harmon is the first.

US Legal wrote:Hazing is defined as an abusive, often humiliating form of initiation into or affiliation with a group, including:

Any willful action taken or situation created which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health of another.

Any willful act by any person alone or acting with others in striking, beating, bruising, or maiming; or seriously offering, threatening, or attempting to strike, beat, bruise, or maim, or to do or seriously offer, threaten, or attempt to do physical violence to another made for the purpose of committing any of the acts.

Rules

Rules

1.) Follow basic roleplay etiquette. This is with respect to things such as god-modding, metagaming, and the like.

2.) Post as often as you can. Your real life comes first, so don't feel overly pressured. (Minimum is once every two weeks; but less is acceptable, if you speak to me about it.)

3.) Characters should be unique, realistic, believable, and dynamic. This means Mary Sues will not be permitted, and that all characters should be developed dynamically and believably.

4.) Literacy is required. There is no minimum post length, but good form, style, and presentation are expected.

5.) Violence and swearing (IC only, please) are obviously permitted due to the nature of the themes. Keep romance/sexual content to PG-13 (this one is a rule of the site as well).

6.) Despite the setting, this is NOT a school roleplay. Be forewarned. You will not be making lists of schedules, anything like that.

Character Submissions

You can submit them to the official roleplay tab page. . . thing. . . on here. OOC discussion will go in this thread, but submit characters that way, and I'll edit them into the roster. . . thing.

Be sure to mention what organization your character represents. You may create characters affiliated with any imaginable organization, agency, institution, etc. provided that your character meets the following three criteria: a.) the character is appropriate for the modern/realistic setting. b.) the character has something to add to the story of the roleplay. c.) the character otherwise meets the criteria set forth in the roleplay's rules. For example, it would be nice to have characters who are members of Epsilon Tau Zeta or pledges of it, as well as other students and possibly faculty at Davenport University, and law enforcement (campus police, Minneapolis Police Department, etc.). Of course, others are welcome provided they may be integrated into the storyline.

Do not feel constrained by the introduction to the roleplay (once it is posted). All players in this roleplay are encouraged to develop their own backstories with one another, to develop their own plots and subplots with one another, and to develop their characters with one another - not merely on their own (though you can, if you choose). Nevertheless, characters are expected to have something to do with the plot outlined here in the introductory piece.

I honestly don't care whether you use a picture reference for your character (as long as it's realistic), but please use your description and history as a chance to showcase your writing ability. Premade or pre-existing characters are welcome, provided they are your creation. Also, be realistic about ages of characters, especially with respect to relevant skills, experience, and education. University students are likely to be between the ages of 17 - 26. Faculty ought to be older than 40 (although graduate lecturers could be as young as 30). Law enforcement is upwards of 20; detectives upwards of 30.

Please PM me when you submit a profile so it can be approved.

I have no idea what Etherpad is, but if you send me a link or something of the like, I would be happy to do that.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

I did, sorry I haven't responded yet. I was thinking that we'd get together on etherpad or something of the like and work out a joint post?

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Hey Jag; I don't know if you got it, but I sent a PM to you regarding just this a while ago.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Using chat to collaborate on a single post would be a good idea, but you guys probably thought of that already.

I intend to mass PM everyone when the mass PM ability is restored -- meant to do it for both my roleplays back in November before I realized how tedious individually PMing literally dozens of people would be -- regarding posting, activity, and commitment or lack thereof. I now have several notebook pages of my illegible handwriting in drafts of roleplay posts. Imagine writing your legal briefs completely by hand first and then rush typing them when you got a chance. Not fun, eh?

Thanks again, guys. I have been enjoying your posts.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

I don't think you have anything to worry about at the moment, Ylanne. Kurokiko and I seem to be the only writers that are active in the game with you at the moment and neither of us are waiting on a post for you at the moment. I'm the next one to post in our scene, but I'm not intended to post this as a line-by-line communication since that would take ages and would likely result in a burnout of the scene and the characters as we beat a dead horse.

Don't pressure yourself on this game because, honestly, nothing is happening that requires your immediate attention.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

For those of you who know I've been sort of on semi-hiatus for the past few months, I was fully planning on being back to full availability by February 12. Schedule wise, this is still perfectly plausible, as my schedule becomes hugely more available and free right after that date.

Of course, Murphy's Law being what it is, I had a complete emergency today.

I'm currently borrowing yet someone else's laptop to type this email because the laptop I've been using completely died.

In August 2010, my own laptop a Dell Inspiron 1501 with Windows XP, died. Several of you wrote to me when I had a conniption over this and I followed your suggestions. I tried practically everything before many of you told me I needed to reinstall the operating system which I was too lazy to do until last Sunday. It didn't really work and I don't know what I did wrong. After I deleted all the partitions and created a new one with maximum space in MB, I went to install Windows XP in NTFS format on the new partition but it restarted and went right back to the setup screen to either reinstall windows, repair install, or exit. It won't let me exit because it says I haven't completely reinstalled Windows. So I don't know what to do about that.

So since August, I've been using someone else's laptop, an eePC also with Windows XP. It bluescreened on me this morning with error

Stop: 0x00000024 (0x001902FE, 0XA8397B74, 0XA8397870, 0XF72FD8D6)
Stop: Ntfs.sys - Address F72FD8D6 base at F72EC000, Datestamp 48025be5

I ran out the door because I had to go somewhere. When I came home around an hour ago, I turned the computer back on. It wouldn't boot properly. It flashed between a black screen, the same blue screen error, and the gray startup screen that normally appears at the start of startup. I could hit F2 and enter setup but that's all I could do. I couldn't enter the BIOS. It wouldn't boot further and allow me to enter safe mode or safe mode with diagnostics or anything. There's no place to insert a CD to boot from disk.

I'm currently borrowing (yet) someone's laptop for a very short amount of time to get this message out. I don't know how much access I will have to the net and RPG until I can either get one or both of the other laptops fixed or replaced. I will log on as much as possible from work, but... well... it's work. I will try to post in all my roleplays this week from work -- profuse, profuse apologies to everyone in any of my roleplays or in a roleplay where I need to post. I will try my absolute darndest to fix or replace the dead laptops.

Again, I am beyond sorry. Real life killed me for the past few months with schedule, and now this. If I can, I will maintain regular posting starting this week from work at least for roleplay. I am sorry!!! (And help if anyone can; I know some folks around here know a lot more about computers than I do.)

I WILL POST MY POST (I started to write it two weeks ago by hand) THIS WEEK
AGAIN I APOLOGIZE FOR THE RIDICULOUS DELAY

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Post the link here when you submit the character; otherwise I'll never notice. Will post by the end of the week. It sounds terrible, but tonight I was drowned in work that must be done by tomorrow and tomorrow I will be out all day. Wednesday should be free, so I will resume work -- I started writing, of course, already -- on my post then.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Ok well it will have to wait as I am posting from my iPhone.

Jag

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Ylanne has stated on numerous occassions that she's always looking for new players. Feel free to submit a character sheet.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

If this is still open hold the door for mr fife

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Hey, no worries. I'll hold off on posting until your new one goes up then.

Jag

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

I'm going to edit the name into the old post and make a new one as well so that we can get some posts in the thread. Kurokiku, thanks for volunteering!

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Will try to post today, if not today then sometime next week. I'll be out of state over the weekend.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

I suppose I should also preface this with 'if anyone is still reading' but if there have not been any volunteers, Jag, I would be happy to put the hapless roommate through a police interview.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Ubah, please do submit a profile -- post the link here though.

I will try to post by the weekend -- been busy, got sick, and then got even more busy.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

If you're looking for players I'd definitely be up for joining. I'm a tad busy right now but I think I'll have time for this.

Jag

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

If anyone is still reading this thread, my character Adelyne Theriot is a local law enforcement officer and, according to her last post, is set to do another interview with a member of the campus community. The character I'd originally chosen for this is apparently gone from the game. If anyone would like to take this opporunity and get to do some posting, please let me know and I will edit the post to be your character rather than the abandoned character.

Thank you and please let me know. If no one else is active in this game, we need to know that as well as soon as possible.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Hey guys, please get to posting.

I'm sorry I've been sick the past few days, but I think I'm starting to get better now. Slept a lot last night! Will try to post soon. Today I have a lot of catching up to do.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Glad to have you, PerfectlyBroken. Any character is fine. I'm not looking for anything in particular at this time other than a well developed character.

Re: As the Curtain Falls (OOC, open and accepting)

Ugh, sorry I'm a million years late. Any specific character you're looking for? I was thinking Fraternity member or President...
