Introduction
It's 2523 and humanity has colonized the nearly every major body in the Solar system, Venus excluded. Titan was somewhat easy to terraform and colonize, with its predominantly nitrogen atmosphere. The rest of Saturn's moons are studded with the characteristic human domes of civilization, shielding their inhabitants from the harsh vacuum outside. Ceres has flourished as a sort of stoner community, hippies and junkies holed up in airtight caves, sharing and smoking whatever psychoactive herbs they can get to grow in the low gravity. The other dwarf planets sport small colonies; though Eris seems to be growing fast, having been claimed by a bunch of Latter-Day Saint types. Io was quickly colonized due to its great potential for geothermal energy drawn from the huge amount of volcanism under the planetary surface, in addition to the fact the the Jupiter-Io electromagnetic flux tube is very pretty. The majority of Sol system's population is located in the inner-planetary colonies; about 30% of the population lives beyond Ceres. Feel free to take creative liberty with what other places might be colonized.
Human culture has evolved a great deal since its relatively conservative state in the 21st century. All of the races have essentially homogenized into a single mass of vaguely Asian people, not that you can tell. Extravagant body modification in the 26th century is as common as jewelry was in the 21st, thanks to the development of the DNA reassembler, a machine with production costs cheap enough to make them as omnipresent as Starbucks in most major colonies. It's more normal to see someone with Technicolor eyerape skin and four arms than it is to see someone who hasn't twisted their double helix into a pretzel. With body modification for cosmetic reasons comes implants with actual practical purposes. At birth nearly everyone has ocular implants plastered to the back of their retinae, extending previously primitive vision into the ultraviolet and infrared spectra, and acting as a display for the tiny quantum computers that most everyone has had implanted along their spinal cord.
Humanity stays in touch with the one extrasolar race it can talk to without instigating a century-long interstellar war, the Vegans, a species numbering about four trillion spread out over three stars(originating from Vega, hence the name) and numerous generation ships, rather than four trillion humans who choose not to consume meat or dairy. First contact was established in the 2300s when a Vegan reconnaissance fleet was attracted to the huge beacon of radiation formed when the fusion reactors inside a 48-kilometer-long freighter all decided to have a meltdown at once and caused a huge chain reaction. United Planets forces were utterly speechless at the path of industrial evolution the Vegans had gone down upon the sight of their ships: spiderwebby lattices of asteroid metal and diamond in a kind of pointed egg shape, easily a thousand kilometers around at their thickest. The Vegans are a simple-looking species, having engineered themselves centuries ago; perfectly spherical orbs of clear protoplasm and organs, clearly built for a zero-gravity environment. The unique thing about them, other than their spherical shape, was their ability to shape and mold the surface of their bodies by Einstein-knows-what biological process. It was an enigma how they managed to speak perfect English, with a Scottish accent, no less, but scientists guessed it had something to do with the diamond-looking thing embedded inside their bodies, probably some kind of semisentient computer capable of learning and passing its knowledge to the user. the Vegans left after a brief chat with some very shaken-up United Planets officials before zooming back home on some kind of spacetime-displacement drive, having given the UP a quantum-entanglement communications link to the seat of their government.
On Mars lives an eccentric man with an eccentric name, Jean-Roland Donat Gaspard Archambeaux Concordat Molyneux Baudelaire, who's posted a terse notice on the Sol system BBS asking for a crew to help man his dilapidated starliner on its journey to the unknown. Maybe you saw the notice; maybe you happened to come upon Jean and his crew in their travels.
