Welcome to Back to Life a roleplay set 7 years after the destruction of a zombie apocalypse. A story about rebuilding, reconciliation, and how some things may never be the same, however much you wish them to be.

-----

Welcome to the HOPE-01 information page.

7 years have passed since the initial necrovirus outbreak and for two years since the Undead Neutralization Army established the safe zone. Since then, under the UNA's protection we have begun to rebuild society from the ground up. We have power, we have food, we have infrastructure. There had been no outbreaks and society inside the ones has returned to normal.

Now has begun a new phase in recovery.

The HOPE project has developed a cure for the undead condition. Beginning with a sample of captured specimens, the intent of the HOPE project is to cure and rehabilitate some of the remaining sufferers of the plague and return them to a functional place within society.

In order to understand how this work, one must first understand the virus family from which the outbreak originated. Necroviridae.

Image

The necrovirus family are a unique set of pathogens characterized by its capacity to alter the way a host functions. It maintains life in a carrier for as long as possible but alters their behaviour, making them perfect vectors for the diseases. This resulted in a spread the world was utterly unprepared for and devastating. The outbreak spread from small towns to overwhelm large cities, and eventually whole nations, plunging the whole world into a new dark age.

Much of the world is still a wasteland infested by the 'undead' carriers.

It can be split into five four distinct strains.

Image

Common Necrovirus

Common terms given to sufferers: Zombies, Undead, Walkers, White-Eyes.

Signs and Symptoms:
-Pale skin. Often with open wounds. Healing factor becomes extremely slow and secondary infection is common, resulting in many untreated TYPE I victims displaying large, necrotic wounds.

-White irises of the eyes, sometimes pupils will exhibit similar colour and corresponding vision problems.
-Slow vital signs.

- Neurological Symptoms. Uncoordinated gait, lack of fine motor skills and loss of capacity to verbally communicate. TYPE I victims move slowly and stumble often, and any attempts at communication come in the form of groaning and growling. A TYPE I loses all memory of their previous life and appear to retain little capacity for higher thought.

-Violent Tendencies. A TYPE I while untreated will attempt to attack and bite any uninfected individuals that it can detect.

Treatment: CRUX injected once a day.
Surgery, debriding and dressing to treat necrotic injuries.

Image

Haemophagic Necrovirus

Common terms given to sufferers: Vampires, Bloodsuckers, Bats, Leeches, Biters

Signs and Symptoms:
-Pale skin. Skin becomes extremely sensitive to UV radiation, starting to burn within minutes of exposure, leading to deep and serious burns from exposure to the su for any sustained time.

-Sharpened canine teeth.

-Low body temperature.

- Need to drink blood. Many TYPE II's retained more high level mental faculties during infection, and described the feeling as being like a maddening, very painful thirst that could only be countered through drinking fresh blood. This pain drove them to attack people and become dangerous.

Treatment:

-CRUX injected once a day.
-SANG taken twice a day. SANG imitates the action of blood and represses symptoms, and as a result many will attempt to consume more than permitted. As a result these are held securely during the day. There is supposedly a black market trade in the stuff among inmates and a few crooked staff.
-Filing of sharpened teeth.
-Heavy sun block, covering clothing and dark glasses in order to enter sunlight.

Haemorrhagic Necrovirus

Common terms given to sufferers: Fast Zombies, Red-Eyes, Bleeders, Rages, Runners

Signs and Symptoms:

-Red irises of the eyes.

-High body temperature.

-High respiration and heart rate.

-Massive increase in athletic ability.

-Constant bleeding from eyes, nose, mouth. Wounds bleed readily and refuse to stop.

-Enormous, irrational rage. TYPE III's untreated will attack anything, from people to animals to inanimate objects in a wild rage. Unlike TYPE I's they are extremely fast, strong and athletic, capable of reaching great speeds and breaking through solid walls when at the full extent of their anger.

-Dehydration. The constant bleeding creates great thirst in a TYPE III and ntreated are often searching for water, or tearing open bottles of unopened drink to try and sate it. Most will not eat however.

-BLindness. Damage within eyes can often cause blindness, temporary or permanent.

Treatment:

-CRUX injected once a day.
-Coagulants to prevent the bleeding.
-BLood transfusions.

Zoomorphic Necrovirus

Common terms given to sufferers: : Werewolves, Beasts, Howlers, Dogs

Signs and Symptoms:

-Altered facial structure - TYPE IV's facial bones tend to elongate and teeth become sharp,, giving them an animalistic quality.

-Claw-like nail structure.

-Acute senses - TYPE IV's senses become very sharp, to the point that loud noise can distress a TYPE IV.

-Animalistic Mentality - TYPE IV's are the most animalistic of infected. They become hunched with a loping gait, crouch rather than sit, and develop a kind of strong pack mentality. They will eat almost anything. They communicate with snarls and howls. They appear to have some degree of intelligence, but their goals are widely instinctual, self-preservation, acquiring food, protecting territory. This mentality does not lift easily as those of other variations even with treatment.

Treatment:

-CRUX injected once a day.

-Of the types, Type V patients have the lowest successful rehabilitation rate, mostly due to their tendency to remain animalistic even with treatment. Many stay deeply uncivilized and unpredictable. Those that show some success tend to show roots in the strong social aspect, the infected tending to bond to one or more people, and maintain 'proper' behaviour by imitating them.

The HOPE project was established by a number of academics who had been trying to gather data on the necrovirus during the outbreaks. Shortly after the safezone was established one, Dr Kovalenko, who had been working within the UNA for many years, managed to develop CRUX, a drug that, when introduced to the bloodstream of an infected individual, drastically reduced the symptoms and aggression of the infected. Other researchers took up the cause and began to experiment using captured specimens.

It was discovered that sustained dosage of CRUX among other drugs could return the sentience to infected, and treatments were developed that could return many infected back to a near-human level of function. As such the HOPE project arose, with the intent of 'curing' the undead.

After discussions with UNA, 3 facilities were granted funding for carrying out the project on a large scale, HOPE-01 was the first and largest of the three, situated on the edge of the safe zone, in a converted hospital building.

Twice a year, UNA troops capture a number of undead from outside the Safe Zone and transport them to HOPE-01 for treatment. There, they are held until they are assessed as fit to re-enter society, or they are terminated by the UNA staff at the facility as unresponsive to treatment.

Patients at HOPE-01 have to undergo numerous treatments, both the drugs to correct their animal mentality, surgery to alter their changed features, and psychological treatment to help them to come to terms with the changes they've been through. The result is a strange contrast within the place. Rooms with colourful walls, board games and book cases stand against thickly walled cells with mesh fronts so as not to allow any hands to reach through, kindly nurses rub shoulders with soldiers armed with high powered rifles, patients are just as likely to be watching cartoons as trying to tear pieces off one another with their teeth.

HOPE is a lively place.

Image

PATIENTS

Brought to HOPE-01 as mindless monsters intent on attacking those around them, the patients are undergoing treatment to try and return to humanity, however, becoming human again is far from easy, particularly when you are only one missed pill away from biting someone's hand off.

DOCTORS

Not too many managed to live through the outbreak, but those with sufficient education who survived often turned their attention to either helping the surviving people, or curing the infected. These decided to focus upon the latter.

NURSES
Nursing has become a far less qualified career in recent years, with plenty of injured and sick and few survivors, many are working on less than a year of training, and HOPE creates dangerous circumstances, however many take the work as they feel they are genuinely making a difference in a bleak world.

UNA SOLDIERS

The Undead Neutralization Army was formed when survivors began to band into large groups to exterminate undead and clear settlements. Gradually as they gained numbers a hierarchy formed, and they became the governing force in the new world, beign responsible for clearing the 'Safe Zone' and maintaining it. The UNA protect people from the infected, but they're brutal, and often poorly trained individuals thrown in amongst the organization by the wish to kill undead. As such many are not in a good relationship with the patients at HOPE-01.

Re: Back2Life

Haha, I believe you. I make typos enough myself. Pretty awesome image editor though-- what do you use?

Re: Back2Life

Kamibito -

-Bite, or blood/saliva getting into open wounds or mucous membranes such as mouth/eyes/nose. However now infection can generally be treated before it has the full effect.

-No, infected can't change shape. Part of the protocol at HOPE-01 is to fix the changes in appearance in the patients. II's have their teeth filed down, I's and III's are given normal-coloured contact lenses when they're able to tolerate them, etc.

Scarlet Loup -

Go ahead!

Dammit. Haha, stupid thing is I do actually know my numerals, must've gottne a typo, the text function on my image editor...leaves something to be desired. Tends to start and stop more or less wherever it likes, then must've just carried on using it as I originally typed most of this about 3am and was copypasting the type numbers in. -_- Derp. Will try and fix that when I have the time.

Re: Back2Life

Hey there! I'd love to reserve a male doctor, please!

Ooh, I thought I should warn you that for Type 4, it says "type 6" in Roman numerals. IV is the Roman numeral for 4.

Re: Back2Life

Two questions:
1. How does the virus spread?
2. Do the infected always look that way, or can the alter their appearance?

Re: Back2Life

Ah thank you very much :3
