Introduction

Lions led by Donkeys

I said 'What are you doing here?', because I knew where his unit was and this was some distance away. And then he broke down. He said, 'I can't face it'. I said, 'Well, there's only one alternative, isn't there? You wouldn't want that.' He said, 'Yes I know that. Don't think I don't know that. There are fifteen men in the cage now, waiting to be shot'.

Army Chaplain Leonard Pearson, in 'Roses of No Man's Land

The Battle of the Somme took place from the 1st of July to 18th of November 1916. In total, 420,000 British soldiers were lost, 200,000 French soldiers died and 500,000 German soldiers perished in the horrifying battles that took place near the river Somme in France. Nearly 20,000 British and French soldiers were lost on the first day and 50,000 were injured.

You will play a British soldier living in the trenches during the Battle. Not only was there moments of horror, the majority of it was impending boredom during the day when there was no fighting and the lines were at rest.

The Battle of the Somme was fought with intentions of relieving the French at the Verdun battlefield. The allied forces attempted to break through the 12 mile long German line near the River Somme.

The heat of the summer and the rain and freezing conditions plagued each man. The conditions were terrible. And you didn't even have to be on no mans land to die, shell pieces flying through the air, disease was large, transported by rats that scuttled along in the trenches. It was common for an inexperienced soldier to stick his head over the top of the trench on his first day and be taken out by a sniper bullet.

Trench life was tough for these soldiers and life on No man's land tougher: It was a never ending struggle for the soldiers on both sides of the war...

Objective of the roleplay

You will play a soldier, Sergeant, Private, Lieutenant, any rank you chose. Describing the life of a soldier whether be it in the trenches or commanding people where to go or make the next move in an office behind the lines. You can even play a communications officer if you wish! You may even see some strange sights, enemies helping each other through their common troubles... Will you make it through the battle? Or will you perish in the muddy fields of the Somme?

Rules

The rules are pretty simple:

- Detailed and Realistic posts
- Try to do a little research on what life was like in the trenches if you do not know! You don't have to do loads but a little shall do fine!

OOC Notes

"Let me at 'em!" Was all I could think while marching along through the small French village. I'd been waiting for this moment for a long time now, a chance to shoot at some Jerry's and serve my country like all men should be doing! I felt proud of myself, a warm feeling flooding my chest as I marched along: although I was tired and weary from all the marching that we had been made to do along the winding roads I was still enthusiastic about my destination.

"Be careful darling"

My mother had warned me this before I had stepped out of the door on my last time at being home before I was sent to France to serve my country. The surrounding area was some what familiar, just like England. It was pretty like the country side that I had spent my childhood running around in. Rows and rows of hedgerows, flat fields and picturesque scenes like a painting that you'd see hanging on a wall in a house.

The weary faces around me were saying a completely different message to what I was thinking. The young guys like me had the eager look on their face, ignorance I soon later learned. But the other guys who'd been serving already had that broken look on their face, like there was nothing left in them to do anything anymore. At the time, this had puzzled me. The government kept telling us the soldiers were happy? Why aren't they? I questioned myself over and over again during that march. But it was a question that could only be answered when one had experienced the war for himself...

Re: [OOC] Battle of the Somme

Yes I've been looking to get it going for a long while now as no one really joined in the first place ^^ haha

Re: [OOC] Battle of the Somme

is this still going? Noticed there hasn't been a post in over a month.

Re: [OOC] Battle of the Somme

Yeah of course I'm still accepting characters :)

Re: [OOC] Battle of the Somme

Looks interesting. If you're still looking for players I may be interested. The other 2 RPs I'm in have died and am looking for another.

Re: [OOC] Battle of the Somme

Also, I can't decide whether or not this roleplay shall be written in Third or First person? I can see the advantage to writing in first such as explaining how the soldier feels, But I think I'm leaning towards the idea of first person ^^
