Introduction

The year is 2023, and years of war has ravaged just about all of the country of Japan, so much so that all modern technology has been rendered useless. During the war, one side managed to use and explode a hydrogen bomb in atmosphere over the country, rendering all electronic devices, with the exception of the car and small battery-powered devices, useless, this side becoming the new rulers of the country. Japan has, once again, reverted to a feudal way of life similar to the Sengoku Era of Japanese history. The use of bladed weapons being all that were available because of the new leader's ban on all firearms. They have been confiscated and burned.

With the coming of this new era, the return of the ideas and teachings of the samurai became increasingly more common, a common ruler of areas of the world with their vassals, the country thrust back into the caste system that the ancient Japanese used to follow.

Now their are clans fighting each other for the throne, even clans trying to take over the areas of other clans. Where will you fit in this new chaotic system? Will you be able to handle it? Only time will tell.

Silently, Kenichiro Amano sat on the veranda of his house, having been made in the traditional Japanese manner on an empty lot in Aizu. He could hear work being done around his enormous house, construction having been nearly completed. He smiled at the thought of his clan being able to flourish, and hoped to one day lead them to the head of the government to stop the struggles and senseless bloodshed that these clan wars brought to the people of Japan. His vision was different from that of the other men. He actually looked to gain control of the country for the greater good of its people, not for the reasons of wealth and power. The thought of these power-mad men in the race for the throne brought him a headache.

Kenichiro rose to his feet, the black and red silk house kimono he wore hardly making a sound as he stood swiftly to his slender, black tabi-clad feet. As he ran his fingers through the black bangs that hung well over his face and brown eyes, he made his way down the hall, nodding and smiling to the people he passed in the halls. His clan's dedication could almost bring a tear to his eye. They were strong-willed and also believed in the same vision he had. They believed in him, and he derived strength from their courage. The Amano Clan was his family's clan, first lead by his father, who helped bring together several neighboring villages. When his father died, he was deemed the new head, having been taught everything he knew from his father. Now he led proudly.

He stepped into the front of the house, the floor boards of the nightingale floor he had put in chirping underfoot lightly. Kenichiro inspected different projects in the area, his long black ponytail swaying at waist-length behind him as he moved from project to project. Everything in the house was being done with care and determination, which were signs of his clan's diligence and loyalty.

It was quiet now. A whispering quiet, with a breeze singing softly through leaves. If one listened long enough, they could believe that spirits really traveled with the wind. Thousands of voices could be heard, mumbled by the trees. A bird called. It was answered with a tone just as lovely. The breeze began to die down, the spirits fading away. The bird's song began to grow and--

CRASH

"I SWEAR TO GOD! IF I CAN'T FIND THAT GODDAMN TEA SET I'M GOING TO KILL A SMALL ANIMAL!" Another crash.

"WE MOVE ONCE AND EVERYTHING GETS LOST!" One of the delicate, paper sliding doors of the mansion in the woods was violently thrust open and a fiery red headed woman came barreling through. She gripped the railing of the porch on the side of the one story house and felt the wood begin to splinter beneath her palms.

Clad in faded jeans and too many t-shirts, Sakura huffed in air and blew it out vigorously. The scenery, calm as it was, did nothing to soothe her nerves. A young woman in a kimono came out beside Sakura, her head down and palms out.

"Madame, if you could tell us where you last saw--"

"Oh my GOD!" Sakura turned on the woman, her full height bearing down on her. "I last saw it at my home IN Kyoto! But now we're OUT of Kyoto! YOU tell ME where it was seen last!" Letting out a very teenage like noise, Sakura walked away from the woman toward the back of the house. As soon as she was out of sight, the young Mistress of the house cursed at herself. A great pain of humiliation and regret filled her.

"Why don't you be a bigger bitch, Sakura." Growling, Sakura Shintate sat on her butt and crossed her legs. With her hands resting on each knee she closed her green eyes and tried to meditate in the quiet wilderness.

She'd made the decision to move away since Kyoto was evermore becoming corrupt with the Shinsengumi Clan. It was so hard to fight against them when your own clan was dwindling down to nothing. Sakura knew it was all her fault. The Shinsengumi were rich, powerful, and made promises only she seemed to know they wouldn't keep. All she could do was bring up her noble father and that they'd made a pledge to him and his clan. But now she was the clan. Sakura Shintate was their leader... and what had she to show for it? A bunch of childish outbursts, bad decisions, and lousy timing. If it weren't for Ryuu, Sakura would be completely alone. He was the only one who could understand her. She knew that the men, her men, respected her talent, but they respected his authority.

The thought made her blood boil. What did she do so wrong? Didn't she fight for justice? Didn't Sakura do and act the same way her father did? He would have made the same decisions, right?

Meditating wasn't working, so Sakura pushed herself to the edge of the back veranda and let her socked feet dangle toward the bright green grass below. Maybe being out in Sakyo-ku would help her learn peace and patience? Maybe...

Kenichiro continued his daily rounds through the household. It had become a new part of his daily routine since the house had been finished enough to live in, the lavish two-story traditional japanese mansion nearing its completion. It would only be a few days now before the construction of Amano mansion was finished. He smiled at the thought as he walked, reminiscent of old times, when his father was alive, and the memories in his old house. When his father, Kentaro Amano was still the acting head of the clan, the house and land had been much smaller. If he were alive today, he would be proud to see the clan that he had started flourishing under the leadership of his only child.

Kenichiro felt as if he'd brought great honor to his father, though there was still much to be done. Until the current government was usurped and the Ishin Shishi in charge, he would still be vigilant and strong with his father's memory to guide him. As he thought of these things, a slender man in black silk robes, adorned with the signature Amano crest of a dove, stepped up up to him from an intersecting hall. The man bowed to Kenichiro, who responded with the same courtesy.

"Kenichiro-sama. Your training hall has been completed and is ready for you." The young servant mouthed in a low tone, seeming somewhat nervous around the clan's head. "Also, the women of the house have asked me to tell you that your bath shall be ready when you are finished in the training hall, "

"Good. Well done. You all have worked so hard these past few months. Give the word to the women of the kitchen that there will be a feast tonight to celebrate this new luxurious house. We shall all dine together and be happy." Kenichiro replied, smiling as if he were watching his child take its first steps or something. With that, the young man bowed and turned to quickly follow his orders. He was always kind to his people, he rewarded them when they worked hard. It seemed to keep their morale up, and that was especially crucial in times like these.

Now with his swords at his side, he moved along the veranda towards the newly-finished training hall, the country side beautiful in the sunlight as it reflected off of the crystal clear surface of the lake just east of the house. It was a beautiful sight, despite the current overall state of the country.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock. The only sound that could be heard within the dimly lit room that had the finest mahogany wood as its furniture. Bookcases that were filled with various subjects whether it may be of geology or culinary could be seen neatly placed upon the wall. Paintings of great distinct in the past were also hanged upon the walls which certainly could fetch a hefty sum of money. Plush Carpets and curtains created from the finest threads. Chairs carved with mastery and elegance along with the source of the repetitive melody coming from the hanged clock embellished with precious stone as its numbers. Yet the most prominent inside the said room would be the table that harbored different figurines that had no clear relations. One was of a sponge, the other was of an action figure and so on. It also held a multitude amount of papers that all had important and confidential written upon it placed in neat stacks. Thus, it was already clear that the room was fitted for a very rich and valuable person and that said being was currently laid upon the chaise longue located at the farthest end window where the view of the gardens could be seen from the slight partings of the velveteen curtains.

The little amount of sunlight that managed to penetrate the quiet room gave enough illumination to show the occupant of the long chair. It was a man of enchanting beauty even though he was a male without doubt. Pristine complexion and silky tresses that could even compete with the greatest of silk. A face that seemed to be carved by the gods themselves and physique that could not be ridiculed. This all belong to this person who appeared to have taken slumber. The scenery inside this room would be perfect for a painting or photograph yet it was disturbed with a knock upon the doors and a feminine voice which had the tone of servitude. It was also clear that it had the mixture of fear and respect within.

"Lord Murakami, it is time for your appointment with the Emperor."

A swift movement barely audible could be heard inside as the doors were opened in an instant. There stood with much nobility the slumbering man from a few moments ago. Blood red eyes that seemed to have given him a demonic aspect although he is of human origin gazed at the female maid that was now looking upon the floor. It was obvious to him that the girl was trembling from fear of him. Adding to that, she was holding her breath in anticipation as his conclusion. He knew for a fact that his servants had different views about him. It piqued his curiosity what kind of opinion this fragile maiden would have towards his person.

"Do not be frighten too much fair maiden, I do not harm those who have not done wrong. Although, I do intend to devour you later on."

Those words were enough to send deadly chills to the female servant and anyone who would accidentally hear him spoke in such a voice that crawled with deadly promise. Alas, time would not permit him as he simply closed the doors behind him and walked along the well-decorated hallways of the palace-like abode of the Murakami Clan within the capital of Japan, Tokyo. Perhaps, he would have the luxury to play with the maiden later on. He had the feeling it would be a fun thing to do. However, his trail of thoughts were interrupted when he noticed the frantic actions of his subordinates. He did remember they had captured a rebel earlier. Taking out a pocket watch, he gazed at it and found that he still had few minutes to spare. Closing it, he directed his footsteps towards one of his men that was currently discussing with a fellow guard in front of the room where the prisoner was detained. He wondered if trouble had occurred that they could not handle it. Stopping before them, it did not took quite long for the men to notice his presence as they quickly bowed down in reverie and called out to him in respect and fear.

"Lord Murakami! What can us lowly guards do for you?"

The Lord they all follow ignored their words as he entered the room and found a pool of blood below the rebel that was currently tied upon his limbs which left him dangling upon the floor. Based on his insights, it seemed the prisoner attempted to commit suicide by biting his tongue since his mouth was dripping still with his life liquid. The guards were frantic that resulted to the fear of incurring his wrath for not being able to obtain any vital information. He could see the point of their actions. It seemed that everyone noticed his attendance as they all halted what they were doing and bowed before him.

"Lord Murakami, please forgive us for our incompetence! However, do not worry. The man is still alive."

A smirk was now upon his face as he approached the prisoner who was currently fighting between being conscious and not. He did admire the resilience the rebel had. However, the side he was fighting was unacceptable in the terms of his justice and for the Government. Thus, he viewed all of them as pathetic insects. Gazing at the prisoner who had received enough torture than one man can handle looked at him with hazy eyes. There was still a spark of audacity within it. However, he did not have enough time to entertain himself with such trivial matter.

"I am Mamoru Murakami."

With that said, the rebel seemed to know him and had the look of hatred upon his eyes. Furthermore, he also tried to escape his bounds to lunge at the Lord of the Murakami Clan. It was clear that his hatred was quite the force to endure the pains the prisoner had received. Although, it was such a waste of such wonderful effort for he had been captured by him. Once more, Mamoru spoke again.

"Tell me what you know and you would be spared."

The answer to that was a spit to his person and without avail he drew his sword and cut the man into a perfect half. Blood splattered everywhere and upon him as well. The men that had witnessed such brutality were stunned as they could not speak. Mamoru simply took out his handkerchief and wiped the blood of his blade and sheathed it once again. After doing so, he gazed at the nearest man to him.

"Prepare my bath and a change of clothes."

His words seemed to have break the spell of disbelief as they looked at him with new found horror. The man he had ordered quickly bowed as he spoke a few words of acceptance and left the room in a hurry. The young lord gazed at the remaining men and had devious smile upon his face. The reactions he had seen were quite funny to have seen. They should already know that he does not think twice when achieving his goals. Nothing matters but victory to him.

"Clean this mess. The prisoner had nothing to share at all. He might simply be just a worthless pawn. One more thing, do not hesitate to kill such garbage. We have no room for hesitations. After all, these are barbarians we are dealing with."

With that he left the room covered in the blood he had spilled, Mamoru appeared to be a demon as his eyes of blood red gave him a presence of horror. Well, it was something that cannot be helped as he gazed at his pocket watch once more. It seemed that he would still be in time for the appointment. He did not like being late in anything after all. Keeping his pocket watch, he headed towards his private bath chambers where he can change into a more appropriate appearance for the Emperor that would be known as his "Best Friend."

Ryuu closed his curiously-colored eyes against exasperation as the panicked maid rambled on about a missing tea set. It seemed that Shintate-dono had lost her temper, yet again. The poor woman before him was currently crying in a most unsightly manner, and continued to implore him not to have her dismissed for the sake of her five children.

"It is no matter, miss," he assured in an attempted voice of comfort, which turned out mostly like his customary monotone. "I shall take care of it."

Without waiting for the maid's response, he gently removed her hand from his sleeve, left the room and entered the next, the one that would eventually serve as a receiving room but for now mostly consisted of still-packed boxes. As he had done most of the overseeing of the move himself, he had a fair idea where he might find the tea set Shintate-dono seemed so distraught about. Indeed, he observed with some trepidation that there was a box labeled "fine china," which had apparently been overlooked, as it was still unopened.

Refusing to allow the small sigh of frustration to escape his lips, Ryuu opened the box and sorted carefully through its contents, setting aside several tea sets both western and Japanese until he found the one that was almost certainly Shintate-dono's favorite. It was in the Japanese style, elegantly painted with tigers and cherry blossoms, an interesting motif. Ryuu couldn't help but think that it was no wonder Shintate-dono liked it so much; the duality was somewhat representative of her as a person.

Brushing the errant thought from his mind, Ryuu collected the entire set with an easy grace and balance that he thought nothing of, and moved it to the tea room. This way, it would be the first thing Shintate-dono saw when entering that room next, and probably calm the remnants of any temper she was in. Having set it up nicely, he decided he might as well make some tea. Shintate-dono's nerves were obviously somewhat frazzled from the stress of the move, and it would do everyone the most good if she relaxed as soon as possible. It was easy for the men to forgive the occasional outburst; having a temper was simply a part of being human and a leader to them, but sustained bouts of unapproachable anger were unacceptable if Shintate-dono wished to keep their respect.

If he was correct in his prediction- and he was fairly certain this was the case- Shintate-dono would be back in a few minutes, probably ridden with guilt for the way she had yelled at the maid. He timed it so that the tea would be hot and waiting when that happened, while he himself would be busy supervising the setup of the remaining items from the move.

Kurenai stood by the main gate, one hand girlishly fondling the odd assortment of trinkets placed snug in her hair and the other on her hip. She smiled charmingly at the 2 traveling mercenaries and batted her eyelashes at the taller soldier carrying a beautifully crafted katana. The female samurai found men to be stupid, naive creatures and had no problem bending them to her will. Kurenai eyed the jetblack sword and stepped forward quickly, startling the man into clutching the hilt. She made a breathless, gasping sound and swiftly grabbed the katana away from him. "Ooh, how pretty! Is this your weapon?" she asked, unsheathing the sword and swinging it around dumbly, as if she did not know how to wield such an item. The mercenary laughed at her helplessness and patted her atop the head, "Silly girl, I have trained for many years and own a countless number of weapons. Leave the subject of war to us men and stick to your needlework."

Kurenai smiled again, sheathing the sword and holding it against her chest. "Then, you wouldn't mind me keeping this one?" The man sucked in a breath and looked at her dumbstruck, "Did you not say you had more than one? Surely you can spare me at least." She cocked her head to the side and she narrowed her eyes smugly as she felt him resigning under the pressure. The man nodded stiffly, struggling to save his pride.

Kurenai bade the 2 goodbye and watched them walk away before smiling coyly at her loot. She moved her hand caressingly over the smooth sheath of the blade and rubbed off a smidgen of dirt that interrupted the beauty of the object. The female took her purple umbrella and slung it across her shoulder lazily as she strolled back into the clan house. Kurenai smiled distantly at the others, but never stayed long enough for a proper conversation. She ducked around the corner fluidly into another hall and swiftly moved in behind Kenichiro, jabbing him in the back with her umbrella. The girl moved in front of him quickly and saluted, her face expressionless.

A slow smile spread across her features and she held the katana in front of him with both hands. "Good afternoon, Amano-sama. A present for you?" she said cooly, "Do not worry, this katana came to me by fair means."

The young man watched as the curious girl sipped the last remnants of her tea slowly before replacing the simple cup upon the tray with long, delicate fingers. Slipping the payment onto the table before her, she stood silently, brushing back a loose strand of inky-black hair from a face not so long ago childish in its softness, and now simply gentle in countenance.

Dusting nonexistent dirt off red-and-white robes, the small girl reached to her left, and took up the sword that lay there. It would not be an exaggeration to say that the teahouse owner's son, who was currently observing her, was more than a little surprised to see it, even still. Certainly, swords were common enough these days, and it was not unheard of for a woman to bear one, but this girl just seemed so... fragile. It didn't seem to fit.

He realized belatedly that the girl was approaching him, and swallowed audibly. "Th-thank you for your patronage, Miss," he stammered. "And for your help back there... with the thieves, I mean." He still couldn't get over the grace with which the girl had dispatched the brigands, almost as though she were floating on the air, untouchable to ordinary people like those that had tried to rob he and his mother in the Tokyo alleyway.

Her gaze lifted from the floor before her, and he was reminded of spring. For that was the color of her eyes; the slightly yellowed green of new shoots just after winter. "You are welcome," she replied, barely audible, and he found himself irrationally wishing that she'd smile, just so he could see it.

But she did not, and merely bowed before taking her exit. He stared after her for a while, before his mother's voice snapped him out of his reverie. "Haru! Get back to work! Those tables still need scrubbing!"

With a wry smile and a shake of the head, the teahouse boy resumed his business. Just as the girl had mysteriously appeared, so he knew that she would never return. Such was the way of it.

*

Shizuka knew Tokyo wasn't the smartest place for her to be, given that there was no guarantee that the Shinsengumi would not kill her if they discovered she still lived, but there she doubted anyone would recognize her eight years later, and this place was always a hub of news. For an entire year she had been searching, since leaving her master, for news of her family, to find none. She had seen her parents killed before her eyes, but privately hoped that her brother yet lived.

And then she had run across the woman and her son being robbed, and had known that she must help them. For what other reason would Namatame have taught her her skills other than to put them to such worthy use? She knew it was unwise to draw attention to herself, but she had asked only for their silence in return for her deed, and they had granted that as well as a discount on their tea.

Making her way through the streets, she observed with some interest that there appeared to be some sort of procession towards the Shogun's palace. At the head of it rode a tall man with a dignified bearing, whose black hair hung in feathery strands. He was dressed impeccably, and Shizuka knew instantly that he was an aristocrat of some sort. She had seen that carriage enough times in her life to recognize it without a second thought: nobility, and danger. Shizuka realized with silent trepidation that she was standing next to a crowd of young women who were talking excitedly.

"Oh look! It's Murakami-sama! Murakami-samaaa!" one of the girls pointed, calling out, and a few others appeared unsteady on their feet for some reason Shizuka did not comprehend.

...Murakami? I recognize the name. Yes, he must be Shinsengumi. She was quite certain she'd never seen him before, but that didn't mean anything; she'd been ten years old when she was taken from her home. I wonder what's going on... I suppose it's none of my concern. She turned and was about to leave the area, but it seemed that for the moment, the crowd had trapped her. Distinctly uncomfortable, she tried to make herself as invisible as possible, wishing nothing more than to disappear.

Kenichiro sighed, a feeling of relaxation coming over him as he lifted the wooden shinai from its stand in the front of the training hall. Taking his stance, he swung the wooden blade a few times in a downward motion, hearing the 'wooshing' sound it made as it moved through the air. He smiled as he trained, not so much as making a sound as he swung his shinai. Then as he swung again, he heard the sliding door of the training hall open, then felt a small jab in his back, causing him to stop his swing and turn around.

"Ah, Kurenai-san. Good afternoon." He said, the corners of his mouth twisting up into a light smile as he bowed in return to her salute. He saw the object in her hands as she held the katana out to him. He eyed it, and apparently she knew what he was thinking, since she continued on to say that she'd gotten it fairly. Then he smiled, extending his hands and accepting the gift gratefully.

"You honor me, Kurenai-san. Thank you." Kenichiro said, bowing to her once more as he held the katana with both hands. With a slight tug, he pulled the ornately-decorated blade from it's sheath. Very well-crafted, 1040 Layered, hand-forged. It was very high quality. The black gloss-laquered sheath was plain, but beautiful in its simplicity. The tsuka looked to be genuine ray skin with a silk cord wrap over it, the mekugi peg was carved into a beautiful orchid design. Even the tsuba was carved with orchids in them. This was a katana that he wouldn't use for battle, but would place on a decorative stand in his room. He bowed to her once more, still smiling, his ponytail falling to the floor.

Tokyo was the most secured and peaceful region in all of Japan. It was far away from petty squabbles of landlords that strive for resources, territory and power. The people were in gratitude for this and had the luxury to leave in harmony without much worry of being overcome by other greedy leaders. These were all made possible by Emperor of the New Japan for having his seat of absolute authority in here along with the main force of the Neo-Shinsengumi situated here. There was no room for doubt that this was indeed the safest place and the most dangerous for those who have intentions of betraying the ruling crown. For the most loyal of the Imperial Crown's subordinates prowled within this grounds, the name would be Mamoru Murakami who held nothing back when it meant to eliminate all obstacles to the Emperor. With that said, his entourage could be seen traveling towards the Palace of His Majesty as countless people were on the sides observing them with much reverie and as usual the screaming of girls that could shatter glass.

Blood red eyes did not bother to gaze at the crowd watching him and his men. He remained unfazed by it all as he had the air of aristocracy and nobility upon his stature. Mamoru was indeed a prominent figure for the people of Japan and the main obstacle of the rebels that had the plans to overthrow the Emperor for their own pathetic reasons. Although, he could not help but be grateful for them. Because of them, his duty to exterminate 'bad seeds' was becoming more of ease as of late. If he could daresay, it was getting to the point of pleasure than pressure. In any case, he wondered what the Emperor want from him this time around. The last time he had been summoned was to simply play a good old game of chess. Of course, he was the victor for losing in his own opinion was never in his vocabulary despite the prestige of his opponent.

"Murakami-sama! Murakami-samaaa!"

However, his peace of mind was being interrupted by the hideous voices of the girls. How he would like to slit their throats to silence them all. Unfortunately, he was not the kind to harm civilians due to his righteous issuance of Justice. Thus, he endured it to his best of ability and be amiable as much as possible. In that way, he gazed at the crowd for a brief moment and caught sight of female who appeared to be rather uncomfortable. The most thing that captured his attention was the sword she was carrying even though she appeared unsuitable for it. There was no doubt that his instinct labeled him to watch over this person. Yet, he had no grounds to do so. At the end, he directed his eyes in front of him as he was nearing the gates and placed the thought of that girl at the back of his mind. He had other important matters to take of for now. Focusing at the situation at hand, the gates opened and the Palace Guards all bowed down to him in respect. Mamoru lead his entourage inside as he exited his mode of transportation. Various officials lined to welcome him for they know what he represents. He had finally arrived at Kōkyo.

"Good Day to you Murakami-sama. His Imperial Majesty is currently waiting for you. If you would follow me."

With that said, he followed the man that escorted as he walked at the familiar hallways of the Imperial Palace. He had been here many times from the moment the head of his clan was taken by him. The Murakami clan had always been on the side of the Royal Family since the establishment of such. Mamoru knew that the reason for such had been taught to him in his history lessons yet, he could not quite remember it. Maybe it was due to being utterly ridiculous or he was worried about the fact he was going to miss his favorite snacks. In any case, things had not changed that much since his last coming. However, he does have a feeling of nostalgia as if this had happened in some other time. Well, he would not be surprised if he had been someone important to the Emperor in the past. After all, Japan had returned to times where Traditions ruled. History does repeat itself. Although, he had no intention to have it re-do every detail.

"Murakami-sama, we have finally arrived."

His trail of thoughts stopped as the door to the private study of the Emperor opened and in his line of sight was the one who had plunged this country into indecisiveness. He was no deaf to the cries of the rebels and the states of other regions. The poverty and unjust rule spread throughout the lands. Many reports were sent his way about such and that is why a few clans had stated to overthrow the current Ruler and unify Japan as one once more. Unfortunately for them, he would not have any of this for his goal was to realize such unification under the authority of this man in front of him. There was no one else capable of this marvelous feat but His Imperial Majesty.

"You have finally arrived my good friend. The one who was named, 'Protector of God's Village'. It is truly befitting of you Mamoru."

Blue eyes that was uncanny of Japanese lineage gazed at him with much humor and confidence. Mamoru did not expect less from the man he had chosen to be the only one above him. Entering the room, the doors were closed and they were left in alone. It had been an unspoken rule that they would be given confidentiality in all that they do. The Murakami Leader gave a mere shrugged at the welcome and looked at the Emperor with much casualty that one would receive for a normal person which was unacceptable. If anyone had witnessed this, it would be labeled blasphemous. However, this had been their ways since Mamoru had become the head of his clan and the current Ruler returned to absolute authority.

"Well, I do intend to live to my name. How about you Tennō Heika? What do you have in mind as of now? Or rather should I say Takahiro. It should be worthwhile."

It was only moments before Sakura felt it safe to reenter the house. But it would most definitely not be on the side she just came from. Her guts were wrenching with guilt and she kept repeating, "You idiot, you idiot, you friggin' idiot!" Her father would have sorely disapproved of her behavior. Sakura knew she still had so much to learn, but sometimes she felt so utterly alone. No one could understand that, even though she'd agreed to follow in Shintate Yatsuhiro's legacy, she was not ready for the responsibility. This mansion. The countryside. Her servants and her clansmen... They all seemed to have faith in her, but she was still losing them.

Except Tachibana-kun. The thought of him brought a little smile to her lips. Looking over the hills of trees behind the mansion, Sakura felt a little calmer. Tachibana-kun was much like those hills. Flowing, steady, a sturdy foundation. He was her rock, so to speak. Without him, all the men and women who had followed Tousan loyally would be long gone from here. It made her happy to have him at her side, and very, very grateful to his patience and respect.

Sakura made her way to the door into the tearoom. Inhaling deeply through her nose, Sakura was ready to slide it open with dignity and demand the respect of whoever was on the other side off the thin rice paper door. But the young woman felt a great flutter in her heart and she dropped down to her knees and cracked it open just enough to peak her bright green eyes through.

Tachibana-kun sat neatly beside a low table, her favorite tea set on its cherry wood top. Leave it to her right hand man to know how to quell the storm that is Sakura Shintate. The smile that had come to her face by seeing him dwindled at her thought. Poor Tachibana-kun. What was she doing to him? How could she be so horrible to him and her people? Why couldn't she just grow up? Sighing, Sakura slid the door open completely, but stayed in her seat just on the side of the door. She held her head down.

"I don't know how to thank you, Tachibana-kun." She held her hands out in a form of respect, much like the maid she had just lost her temper with. "I wish I could learn your patience and kindness." Sakura felt so low and guilty now. How could she ever face that poor woman again? And how was she supposed to lead this clan?

Ryuu raised an eyebrow at his commander's gesture of supplication, and the tiniest of smiles crossed his face before disappearing into the neutral expression he always wore, even in private.

"Shintate-dono," he replied. "Patience is not something to be hurried after. Such a method is self-defeating, would you not agree? One must first learn to be patient with oneself, and to forgive oneself for mistakes." He chose his words carefully; in truth, this was something Shintate-dono would have to realize on her own eventually, but he could not help the desire to point her in the right direction. She really was putting in an admirable effort. Her nature was not her father's, and in truth he could not help but think she had been thrust into a position of authority much too soon. He himself had been groomed for such a thing from the day he was born; Shintate-dono had mercifully been allowed to be a child. In any other circumstance, he might have envied her that.

But alas, the situation called for her to learn much very quickly, something that Ryuu was helping with as best he could without pushing her too far. Finishing the preparations for tea, he gestured for her to be seated at the head of the little table. Perhaps some normalcy would be of assistance.

"Most of the moving has been completed. Your room is prepared, and the maids tell me they may have a bath ready whenever you need it. The agents we left in Kyoto confirm that the Shinsengumi have learned of our departure, it will doubtless not be long before they make good on their threat to make the city theirs." Ryuu would not sigh or shake his head, however much he was inclined to do so. Such circumstances were unfortunate, but there was little to be done. Their departure from Kyoto would put the city firmly within the grasp of the Shinsengumi, but had they stayed, the same would most likely have happened, only at the cost of many more lives. "Perhaps it is time you considered a meeting with the Amano clan," he proffered, trying to give her a course of action, something to keep her from stewing over what she doubtless perceived as a failure on her part to protect the city from the long arm of the Shogun.

He looked at her askance, inviting a response, and sipped his tea silently.

*

Shizuka met a pair of near-luminous red eyes, and could not help the chill that ran down her spine. Namatame-sensei had warned her never to disregard her instincts, and they were telling her to run from that man as far as her legs could take her.

But surely this was irrational. She doubted he had even noticed her, given the rather large, loud horde she found herself trapped in. Still, she was glad when she was able to extricate herself at last from the crowd and reach the relative peace of the back streets.

Tokyo was far from a safe place, but such concerns mattered little to Shizuka. While she was far from the type that went looking for trouble, trouble always seemed to have a way of finding her. It was good that she was equipped to deal with it. Her left hand unconsciously found its way to Kikuhime's hilt, and rested comfortably there. The sword was not sharp, and incapable of dealing death except in the most unfortunate or violent of circumstances, and it was precisely this which allowed the young woman to wield it with confidence. A small smile crossed her face as she remembered the day Namatame-sensei had presented it to her. She'd been so confused as to why he was giving her a katana, and a long one at that, until she'd drawn it and seen the blunted edge. It was the only one of its kind in the world, he'd told her, made to be as strong and fine as the best of bladed weapons, but nonlethal.

Shizuka dragged herself from her memories and began to look about for some place to stay for the evening. It appeared that there was an inn close to the palace with empty rooms at a price she could afford. While she did not relish staying so close to the stronghold of dangerous and powerful people, she knew she was beneath their notice, so what need had she to worry? She'd sleep tonight, and leave tomorrow, to wander again until she came upon the next town. Perhaps she'd head for Aizu; she'd never been there before, but had heard some travelers talking about how beautiful it was this time of year. Yes, a pretty, peaceful place like that sounded quite nice right about now...

Perhaps, when Sakura was 14, maybe 15 seeing as how her father had coddled her so, she would have laid on the floor and curled into herself. But her mother's Irish blood flowed through her veins, as well. That notion would have been quickly beat out of her and she would never cry over something that could be fixed. Catherine Peters Shintate. A woman of many faces, but always Sakura's mother. It was probably her blood that kept Sakura as strong as she tried to be.

Sitting at the head of the table, Sakura found herself catching glances at Tachibana-kun. How could he remain so calm when their whole world was falling down around them? Sakura felt like the David to the Shinsengumi's Goliath. No... they had 3 Goliaths. And one had taken her city. Had taken her home. Sakura hadn't even stayed to fight them off. Would Tousan have done the same? Mother would have fought.

Catherine had always been a loose cannon. That must have been why Yatsuhiro had loved her as much as he did. It was where Sakura got her bad attitude toward a lot of things. It was also where she'd gotten her sense of loyalty to the death. And it was that blood in her that made her feel so awful for just leaving her home. Tachibana-kun had a good idea. He always had good ideas. Why didn't she just step down and let him take over? Looking up at him, Sakura seriously considered blurting those words out loud. Wouldn't everything be easier for her? And wouldn't the Shintate clan prosper under his rule?

Her mouth opened to say the words, her eyes glossing over with salty tears that would never fall. She could do this. She could give him the power. Tachibana-kun could be Tono. Of course he could. He would be saving her. Saving her clan.

Sakura's lips closed slowly, her eyebrows drawing together and she dropped her emerald eyes to the tea cup cradled in her thin fingers. Tousan would not have it. It was the Shintate clan and wasn't that her namesake? "New palace." Sakura was to help build the New Palace of Japan.

"You're very right, Tachibana-kun." Sakura spoke softly, with more strength than she thought she had. "We must contact the Amano clan. An allegiance with them would certainly make us stronger, I'm sure." Lifting her head up, Sakura put on her most commanding smile and sipped at her tea awkwardly.

The Amano clan head held his new gift in his hand, looking to it closely and then sliding it from its sheath again. He turned back to his second in command and bowed again slightly in thanks then placed the sword back into its scabbard and placed it on a nearby stand. His clansmen and women were so loyal to him, and he couldn't thank them enough. That's why he was planning a feast for them to honor them properly, even though it probably wasn't really enough to thank them for pledging their lives to him. His father would be so proud right about now, had he still been alive. He wanted nothing more than to be a shining beacon of light for those who have lived in the shogun's shadow for so long.

Once the new katana was set safely on a stand, Kenichiro continued his training, swings and blocks, as well as blade catching, or halting. He wanted to be the best as not to let down his clan and shame the Amano name that he so proudly carried. Kenichiro slashed through the air, swinging fiercly and repeatedly until he limbs and body screamed with exhaustion. Then he replaced the shinai back in its place and headed to the door of the training hall. It was time for him to bathe and dress for the feast tonight. Upon opening the door, he saw two of his clansmen walking by. They instantly dropped to their knees before him, and he bowed in return.

"You may stand." He told them in a cheerful tone, his face covered in sweat from his training. They rose to their feet, looks of great respect on their faces. Kenichiro looked to them with his usual kind expression, one that hardly changed."One of you, place this wonderful gift that Kurenai-san has given me in my quarters. The other, please deliver word of my arrival to the bathhouse. Thank you for your loyalty."

With that said, they ran to do their individual tasks, bowing to him. Kenichiro took the long way around the house towards the bathhouse, to enjoy the scenic view, stopping to give words of encouragement to random servants or to chit chat with one of them. He cared to know about his clan's people. He wanted them to know that he cared for them.

The sun shown down brightly from sky, causing Lei Nakajima to shield his eyes with his sleeve and adjust his pipe. He was standing outside a tall three story house, a sort of shelter for widows. Lei stood with ten other samurai, all wearing the red and black robes of the Dogs of War, and all but Lei wore the demon dog masks that gave them their name.

"Shendoa House" He called out "You are harboring four fugitives, the Tokajinta Brothers and the merchant girl. The penalty for harboring criminals is death by the sword, you have to the count of five to send them out, or we come in." Lei's dog samurai yelled in agreement, brandishing their katanas.

"One." The house stood motionless, not a soul seen inside.

"Two." A light breeze rustled through the trees in the yard, stirring up leaves.

"Three." Lei cocked his head to one side and looked the house up and down. "Ah hell, who am I kidding? Go drag em out boys" The samurai rushed the house and burst through the door, yelling and hollering as they went. Lei walked in behind them, taking in the decor of the house and noting the pre-war era living room. His inspection was interrupted by two of his samurai flying through a paper wall, landing in a heap at his feat. The Tokajinta brothers stood in the next room, all three of them surrounded by Lei's men. Lei Nakajima stared grimly at them. "Jigs up I'm afraid, hand over the merchant girl and you're death will be mercifully short."

"F*ck you Lei" Kanto, the oldest said. "You're too late, she's already on her way to escaping the country"

"Hmm, doubt she'll get far. No matter, I'll take my prisoners now" The dogs of war charged the brothers and engaged in flurry of steel and sparks, toppling over tables and vases as they went. The widows could be heard hiding upstairs, scurrying about and whimpering in fear. Sanzou, the middle brother, was brought down, and in a rage Kanto charged his murderers and dispatched them with ease. Lei saw a situation getting out of hand and jumped in, drawing his sword and engaging the Tokajinta brother. Blow for blow was traded and parried, until Lei saw his opening and brought his katana around, spearing Kanto through the lung. Lei looked up from the corpse just in time to see the youngest brother dispatching the last of his men. They stood staring at each other from across the room for what seemed ages.

"You killed my brothers demon."

"You killed my men littlest Tokajinta" Both brought their swords forward in front of them in the duel salute, and then rushed each other. The distance closed rapidly, and as the young man neared him Lei brought his sword in and up, running past his opponent and turning around to face him. The brother faltered slightly, and then collapsed in an expanding pool of blood. "So the work of the Neo-Shinsengumi is done." Lei was speaking to an empty room, the death of his men was a setback that would need to be addressed. Lei walked to the spot were he had dropped his pipe when he charged Kanto and picked it up, taking an experimental puff before resuming his smoking. He checked the house over once for the merchant girl and then left back for Tokyo to fill the ranks of his Dogs and report to the almighty Murakami Clan.

In deep contrast with the man in front of him, eyes of blue gazed at those blood red ones that had given much fear yet he only found a sense of strength in dire times. He knew well that Mamoru would not settle for anything trivial as he spoken with much requirement for this summon. Well, it is the main reason he knew that this job would be of great interest to him. Standing from his chair, he looked towards the large window pane behind his desk. It had the spectacular view of the Palace Grounds and the walls that separate it from the common people. Before, he would not have dreamed of being given the Chrysanthemum Throne due to the tumultuous moments he had suffered. It had made him what he is of now and for that he was quite thankful to his brothers and their mothers.

"Mamoru, you have sworn your loyalty to me have you not?"

His voice had a certain depth that seemed to have been taken from a well of melancholy. Yet, it had a regalia that could not be hampered in any matter. The Emperor of Japan looked at his close friend sideways as he awaited for the answer that would be music to his ears. In all his life, he only trusted two persons and that were his elder sister Kumiko and Mamoru. Truthfully, he did not look like your typical ruler of Japan. He looked more like of a famous celebrity or model than of royalty that people had been accustomed to. However, he was of foreign descent and that was the root cause of his misfortunes. Well, it was not his fault to be born with such heritage. In a way, he viewed the blood in his blood as a contract to the Devil. His blue hair and azure eyes signified who he is. There was no doubt in his mind that the people knew who he is since his physical appearance was distinctive among his fellowmen.

"My oath is for eternity. I am your sword and your shield. Harm would not come to you from anyone's hands. Do you need more assurance Takahiro."

Takahiro finally faced him and had an all-knowing smile upon his handsome face which would almost be at par with the prodigy of the Murakami clan. He knew exactly that Mamoru was not the kind to be very expressive in his thoughts or emotions unless he was playing for the fun of it. An eccentric man he was yet, he had a dark charisma that even him had been lured to it. Taking a few of papers upon his desk, he handed it to Mamoru for him to read. It was a job to be done with much force as much as possible. The recent uprisings from the many landlords that had been plaguing the lands brought quite a chaotic spree. They should knew better that Japan is his alone. He would show them their place and that would be beneath his feet like the pathetic worms they were.

"I just need to hear a compliment. In any case, I would like to eliminate those people on the list. Information had been said that they had the liberty of planning a rebellion against my rule. I would not have any of that. Handle it well, Mamoru."

The head of the Murakami clan took a passing glance towards the paper he was given with as the sound of flipping papers filled the room for a brief moment. He did have the interest in doing this job. It was always a pleasure to see how long would such people struggle for their improbable goal. All in all, Japan does not such citizens that do not know their place. They are 'Bad seeds' that would need to be disposed of to usher a new era. Blood red eyes gazed at Takahiro and simply shrugged with a smirk upon his face. There was no need to tell him to handle it well. His job had always been impeccably perfect. Taking out his pocket watch, he looked at the time for quite awhile. In that stance, his cool baritone voice sends icy chills to anyone who would have heard.

"Takahiro. No need to tell me to handle it well. For, I do it perfectly."

It was evident in Mamoru's tone that he was not pleased of being underestimated and yet the air of superiority did not waver at all. The young emperor could not help but gave out a hearty chuckle at this answer. If it was a competition of confidence and arrogance, no one could defeat Mamoru. He was the kind to do what he says without fail. This was truly what he liked and admired about him despite being younger by five years. It did make him feel slightly terrible that to him, Mamoru was simply now a pawn in the game of chess he was playing. Although it would be insulting to say that Mamoru was not an important piece to realize his ambitions. He needed his skills and intellect. The Murakami clan had been the main force of the Emperor since ancient times. This would not be changed any time soon. In addition, he does have the best of the said clan on his side. Everything was happening perfectly.

Ryuu watched his commander's internal battle from the corner of his eye. There were occasions where his powers of observation were just a little too sharp, and unfortunately for him, he could guess exactly what she was thinking.

Self-doubt was never a good road to travel, but Ryuu knew every sidestreet and alleyway of it. It seemed Shintate-dono was becoming quickly acquainted with the same. Luckily, it seemed that this particular dam was not yet ready to burst, and his placating words-ones which he would have hated to speak, but would have, for her sake- died easily before passing his lips.

She set her mouth into a firmer expression, and confirmed the order to meet with the Amano clan. So be it, then- that was something he could handle. "Very well, Shintate-dono, I'll have the messenger dispatched with haste." He set his tea back upon the tray before standing smoothly and bowing at the waist. As much as he would have liked to finish the cup, there were important matters to be attended to, and in all likelihood, Shintate-dono had a mistake to be forgiving herself for right about now, and he'd leave her to rectify it without an audience.

Outside, he pulled aside a man wearing the traditional blue of the Shintate. "I need you to deliver this to Kenichiro Amano-sama. It must reach him, and he alone." He removed an envelope from inside his gi and handed it to the man. It bore the official clan seal, and within was a formal request for a meeting between the two clan heads, at whichever location Amano-sama should choose. It was, of course, possible to make a phone call, but given who was in charge of the government, it was unwise at best, and Ryuu had decided long ago that it would be best to handle important matters by messenger.

The man nodded, and immediately diverted his route to his car. That particular device, at least, couldn't be listened to by someone working for the Shinsengumi.

*

Shizuka woke early the next morning from a nightmare she couldn't quite remember. Brushing long, light strands of hair back from her face, she decided to be practical and ponytail it today. She'd need it out of her way on the road anyhow.

She left the small hotel room in much the same condition as she'd found it and took to the road before most people were even awake. It was quiet, at this time of day, and Shizuka relished the sensations of a world just waking from slumber of its own. Namatame-sensei had made her get up at this time every day for seven years, and she'd grown accustomed to it, even come to enjoy it.

She didn't know exactly how long it would take her to reach her destination, especially since she could only go by foot. Shizuka didn't own a car, the trains were no longer operational, and a taxi would be much too expensive for a wanderer's budget. In the end, she supposed it mattered little; she'd arrive when she'd arrive, and that was about the end of it.

She sent out a small prayer to any being that might be listening that she'd have a safe journey. Not that it'd ever worked before...

All was well within the gates of the Amano mansion. The smell of great food and the sound of friendly chit chat and laughter floating through the house from the main dining hall. The entire house and staff all ate together, with the exception of the gate guards. They took shifts eating and then going to relieve the other to also get a chance to eat. Kenichiro laughed and talked among his people happily. It reminded him of times eating with his mother and father. How they laughed and talked. The feast had been a success. When it was over, He even helped clean up, carrying trays to the kitchen with dirty dishes. Then he bade everyone good night and retired to his quarters upstairs for the night.

He awoke the next morning, the bright sun pouring into his room through the open window. He got to his knees and prayed to the gods for another good night's sleep and the blessing to see another beautiful morning. Aizu sunrises were so colorful and beautiful, birds chirping their morning songs and the breeze carrying the scent of sakura blossoms. He enjoyed the morning time. He always stood out on his balcony and watched the sun rise from its slumber.

A sudden knock at the door of his quarters broke him free of his morning time thoughts, causing him to turn and look over, stepping back into his room. He told the knocker to enter. The servant bowed and told Kenichiro of a visitor coming from the Shintate Clan with an important message. He told his servant to go and serve the man tea and have him wait in the main hall. The woman bowed once more and swiftly disappeared. This was definitely getting interesting...

After bathing and dressing in a modern outfit consisting of a red and black open hoodie and slightly baggy black pants, he proceeded to the main hall and sat kneeled on the floor in front of his guest. They exchanged bows and then the guest handed over the message. It bore the official Shintate Clan seal, so it was indeed legitimate. The messenger excused himself, bowing and taking his leave. Kenichito had a guard escort him, then he began opening the message, his syes moving back and forth across the page as he read the message. He rubbed his chin, then requested a servant to bring him his brush and inkwell, as well as some paper, an envelope, and seal. Once that was done, he sent one of his messengers to the Shintate residence to deliver it. It stated that he was inviting Lady Shintate, and her second in command to the Amano mansion for dinner to to meet. He considered the Shintate Clan an ally fighting for the same cause, so all would go well. Kenichiro Amano would receive them warmly.

With the documents in hand, he closed the pocket watch and gazed at the most powerful man in Japan. It was quite a feat to see him in this light of glory for when they were still young, he fitted more of a pitiful child. Well, the times had always kept moving forward and it was the same for them. They had emerged from their constricting chains and now soaring with their own strengths. Although, the journey had yet to reach halfway and from one glimpse it was truly perilous. He did indeed have the eye to who would satiate the emptiness inside of him. It is the reason he would not falter in his duties. He is a man of his word and always would be. No matter what the people would speak about, the Murakami clan would forever stand by the wish of the Emperor who had laughed at his show of confidence. He would not have any less of that. This may be his pride or maybe an emotion he had thought to disappear upon the time in the island.

"If there is nothing else Takahiro, I would take my leave now. After all, there are many rumors about us going on."

Mamoru ended his words with smirk as his eyes of blood glistened with much humorous lust. Well, there were indeed rumors sprouting since Takahiro would not have yet any woman to be his bride. Instead, the Emperor preferred his companionship than anyone else. He has no doubt that the countless officials surrounding Takahiro spoke about this to him. In his case, he had found out due to gossiping servants and various fan girls that would scream at him when he would leave his abode. It was a disturbing thought to begin with although, the sheer comedy of it was fun to use as a teasing material.

"However, I do intend to prove that I am the man in this relationship."

After saying that, Mamoru dodged a box of chocolate pocky aimed for his head. The teasing smirk remained plastered upon his face as he took that indication for him to leave. It had always been fun messing with Takahiro. Despite being the emperor, he still remained the one he had known since childhood. It is why he would take the burden to be the dark hand of Takahiro and would let such accusations of tyranny fall on deaf ears. He will believed in the path he had chosen without looking back and hesitations. The head of the Murakami clan exited the room before he would hear a round gibberish talk from Takahiro as he walked along the hallways with his hands inside his pockets and a gentle smile upon his face that quickly vanished as fleeting as it appeared.

"Lei should be arriving soon enough."

Servant women fussed around her, picking at her hair and laughing amongst themselves. It was a beautiful sound, happiness. Inside, Sakura was warmed by in. But deeper, Sakura was being torn apart with anxiety. Thank God Tachibana-kun was going. Of course he would. Sakura would have demanded it that way. She was good at making justified decisions, but sometimes she thought a little to rashly on the side of what was right. Sometimes doing what was right meant falling back for a while. Hence the move out of Kyoto.

Sakura thought it would be a good idea to wear a kimono to the meeting, and so wore one adorned in the blue of her clan, with small orange birds patterned on the cloth. The women fixed her hair up on the crown of her head, placing a bright golden comb in the twist. Her heavy, crimson bangs still fell forward over her eyebrows, shadowing her dark green eyes. There was a fear in those eyes, a deep seated fear of loss and failure. One that could only be quelled by her determination to bring down what was wrong with her country. This meeting, this alliance with the Amano clan could be her saving grace. Sakura had to do this right. The woman had to prove herself to her men, her people, and to Tachibana-kun. Every time she faltered she saw that look on his face. Was it disappointment?

"You look just like your mother," one of the older women whispered to her breaking her out of her self-inflicted nightmare. Sakura smiled weakly at her and gazed into the mirror. She didn't think the old woman was right. Catherine had been so beautiful and confident. Her daughter tried hard to appear the same way, but inside she was trying to pull all the pieces back together.

"Thank you, Midori," Sakura spoke and patted the wrinkled hand that rested on her shoulder. Since her outburst two days before, Sakura had treated all her maids to a wonderful feast and relaxing day with no work. She was used to having to serve herself and it was a glorious day. The clan leader didn't have to think about anything but her food, her work, and her training.

Then the return letter had arrived and her gut had been twisted in knots ever since then. Tachibana-kun was as cool as a cucumber. It was typical of him to keep calm. Sakura was a wreck, but only he would know that.

She stood up and all her servant women bowed at the waist, keeping their eyes down.

"Thank you all for your patience and diligence with me. I am honored to be served by you." She bowed in return and with a great breath in, she walked from her room into the waiting hall. Soon, she and Tachibana-kun would be arriving at the Amano's. Soon, this country would be set right again.

Ryuu glanced at the watch on his wrist. It seemed that Shintate-dono was running a few minutes late, and his lips pursed with the slightest measure of frustration. Truly, it didn't bother him all that much, but he was concerned about how it would appear should they arrive at the Amano estate late for their meeting. Since it was only the two of them attending- he did not wish to offend the head of he other clan by bringing their own guards to the stronghold of an ally- the lost time could be made up on the road if it wasn't much longer, but he did not like taking the chance.

Absently, Ryuu brushed nonexistent dirt from the shoulder of his deep blue gi. The sleeves were edged in gold, which truthfully he found a bit too ostentatious for one such as himself, but at least the hakama was an ordinary black. He had considered wearing a more modern suit, but ultimately, his swords were easier to carry this way. Here was the one concession Ryuu would not make- no matter how firm the ally or how safe the stronghold, he would not forgo his weapons. He would consider it the worst kind of failure to be caught without them in the unlikely event should a fight become necessary.

Shintate-dono emerged from her rooms into the hall, and he was initially taken aback at how very different she seemed in a kimono. It wasn't as though this was the first time he had seen her in such, but unless he was mistaken, the time spent in command of a clan had matured his employer, perhaps made her more... suited to one.

His eyebrows furrowed slightly at the unexpected thought. Hmm... I suppose she is growing to suit her job. Perhaps, in time, she will not require my assistance. He wasn't sure how he felt about that.

Nevertheless, he bowed formally at the waist, and offered her his arm, escorting her to the car before opening the passenger side door, then settling himself into the driver's seat, turning the waiting key and allowing the engine to roar to life.

"I would estimate a few hours before our arrival, Shintate-dono," he informed her as he merged onto the highway, increasing the speed of the car so they would not be late. What happens after that is for you to decide. Truly, they should form some kind of collective plan, a tactic for dealing with the ever-strengthening Shinsengumi. He only hoped they would succeed; their time grew short.

Tokyo appeared like a sprawling bear lodged into the surrounding country as Lei Nakajima continued his walk to the capitol. The widow home had only been a few miles outside the city limits, but Lei still regretted not commissioning mopeds for this particular mission. The familiar babble and noise of city life soon filled him as he entered the city, passing farmers, merchants, and Neo-Shinsengumi soldiers in his walk to get to the Murakami clan headquarters. Finally the great wooden doors of the clan citadel stood in front of Lei, and servants quickly lifted up the oak bar blocking the gate to let him in.

"Ah Master Lei, your return in few number than I remember, you're presence however reassures me of your success." An old man stood in the receiving hall of the Murakami mansion a small cane in hand.

"Haku." Lei acknowledged. "Rest assured there is no escape for traitors and dissidents while I roam Japan. Who are these?" Lei referred to a line of people chained neck to neck standing next to Haku.

"Traitors and dissidents. With a smattering of dangerous criminals. Maybe you could take this opportunity to recruit a few dogs?"

"Lord Murakami?"

"Returning from a visit with the Emperor, you can await him in his study." Lei looked down the line of men and women, and slowly walked past each one. He stopped before one in traveling ronin garb.

"Name."

"Takayama Ukon"

"Hm, murdered a few villagers I assume, lost your master, got offended, it happens." The ronin stared at him with an expressionless face.

"They were about to lynch him for killing all the members in a shipping guild, when we arrived. He was carted back to Tokyo and now awaits interrogation." Lei nodded as Haku filled him in.

"Interrogation? Oh my friend Takayama, this is a bad day to be a prisoner in the Murakami house. But I see a coldness in your eyes, and your soul, that fears no such pain. That is samurai, that is truth. You have no honor, and so are worthless. But I take men like you, master-less warriors without purpose, and I hone you to hunt enemies of Japan. I give you a path, all you need do is accept." The ronin looked at his chains and back up at Lei.

"I accept."

"Excellent, get him out of this line, have the weapons master escort him to the barracks." Guards appeared instantly and escorted the ronin away. Lei took one more look at the line and turned to Haku. "Find me a few more unstable ones and condemn the rest."

"Yes Master Lei, it is as you say."

Lei walked up the grand staircase and down a hallway lined with samurai standing at attention. To everyone but Lei and a few others, Lord Murakami was untouchable, and in this mansion it was what you didn't see that would truly strike fear into an intruder.

"Announcing, Lei Nakajima"

The command to enter the study was heard and Lei stepped in, doors of steel and gold shutting behind him.

"Lord Murakami" He dropped to one knee. "I return from the east, the Tokajinta brothers are dead, and the merchant girl will soon be hunted down. I sent the Rat after her, there is nowhere she can hide." Lei awaited as his master turned his attention and his words to the samurai.

Finally arriving at the Murakami Estate, he immediately went towards his study while a servant of his began to report the matters that occurred at the household while he was away. Not sparing the older man yet smaller than him a glance who was trailing behind him and trying to keep up with his long stride pace, he listened with much precision to all that were being spoken about. There were the issues of finally securing Kyoto, the widespread skirmishes by minor landlords, the capture of rebels and criminals being taken within the Estate and the arrival of his Second-in-command. To him, everything was in order and nothing was amiss. There was no need for his direct intervention. Although, the mission decreed by the Emperor needed his personal touch. It had been a long time since he had the opportunity to hunt 'bad seeds' himself. His personal contemplation ended as he was now before his study at the same time the report had ended. Opening the doors, he stopped midway before entering and spoke in such a cool baritone voice that would be much akin to a song even though, he was only talking.

"Regarding about the prisoners, kill them. This country does not need garbage."

The said servant gave a respectful bow as a form of recognition and affirmation of his orders. With that, Mamoru finally entered his study upon the doors closing behind him. Taking his place behind his desk, he gazed at the neatly-stacked papers before him. If he had recalled earlier, these were all about the various complains of the many citizens of Japan. Takahiro had insisted for him to handle since he would simply burn all of them. His reason was simple, people should know their place and be at ease with it. However, it would not be beneficial to the Emperor if such trivial matters were not at least given attention. So, the papers were sent to him. Leaning upon his chair, he wanted to return all of this to Takahiro and tell him to deal with it. But, Mamoru was not the kind to step down from anything thrown at him whether it would be a task or a simple challenge. He would not run from it and face it head-on.

"He expects me to do his responsibility and go hunt his enemies. He either trusts me too much or see me as a slave."

Releasing a sigh, he placed his chin upon his right palm and looked lazily at the said piled papers and beside it the lists of people needed to be shown retribution at the request of the Emperor. It seemed he would be busy for the mean time and would not have some fun playing with his new found toy which was the female servant who had called upon him earlier. Well, they did say that patience is a virtue. He would have his pleasure soon enough but, this was fun in another way that sparks his interest. Taking in hand once again the document given to him by Takahiro, he read the details of each targets when he heard that Lei had finally arrived.

"Enter."

One word spilled from his mouth as his eyes continued reading the document in his hand not even giving a mere glance to his Second-in command. However, his ears were wide open to the report that Nakajima would have for him about the mission assigned to him. The matter about the Tokajinta brothers were resolved but the merchant girl did not bode well to him. He did expect that all loose ends would end upon sending Lei there. It seemed his expectations were not met. Despite giving the assurance that the girl would be found, he was truly disappointed about it. He wondered if it was right to place Lei in the position he is in currently. Placing down the document he had busied his eyes with upon the desk, Mamoru looked at Lei with much eerie coldness.

"I sent you there to end it all. I wonder why it is so hard to catch a mere girl. Tell me Lei, do you deserve to be in the position you are in or I have gravely mistaken."

Lei Nakajima was promoted in being his Second-in-command due to his achievements. Many had said he was perfect for the role thus, he had allowed for the man to be his right hand. Although, it seemed his ability was not similar to the recommendations that had been passed to him. In another way. it did pique his curiosity who was really the merchant girl to have various connections to easily escaped the clutches of the Shinsengumi. This was not the first time it happened. Does it mean that there was traitor deep within the command of the Emperor? The mere thought of that was enough to send Mamoru into a blood lust as his gaze became sharper than usual.

"As soon as the girl is found send her to me. Lei, prove to me your worth. A direct mission from the Emperor had been given. This time I would be coming along."

Lei endured Lord Murakami's musings about his skill and remained calm. In truth it was almost impossible to truly satisfy Mamoru Murakami, if a man slayed a dragon the master of the clan would demand to know why the scales had been damaged during the fight. Lei Nakajima lowered his head in submission and apologized.

"Lord Murakami, you need not worry over this matter, the Rat is the greatest bounty hunter in Japan, there is no escape for her rest assured." Mamoru Murakami remained stone still, awaiting more. "If the Emperor has enemies that need eliminated than my men and I will begin at once, and if you are to accompany, than his word is law and we will begin preparations immediately. Lord Murakami dismissed Lei with a wave of his hand, the meeting would resume during the evenings prayers. Lei got to his feet and exited, stretching his neck as soon as he left the study. The quicker the clan leader gave him leave the better for Lei, Mamoru Murakami was the kind that you grew nervous for your life the longer he talked to you. A quick conversation meant he had other matters and to get back to work.

"Everything went well Master Lei?" Haku stood at the foot of the stairs and waited for the samurai to descend.

"Wellness is relative to the person, so yes, although it appears the Emperor has a black list now that he wants addressed. I fear a mission that will take a significant amount of resources and lives to complete.

"Welcome to Japan sir" Haku finished with a twinkle in his eye. "By the by, I dragged three more dammed souls from the prisoner line, they should meet your expectations as far as murderous samurai go"

"Of course, my thanks old one, wake up Sinsaru, I'm still short handed and I need a leader for the Dogs of War." Haku bowed and left Lei in the central hall of the mansion. He motioned for messengers and handed them letters to be delivered, and then began his descent down into the cellar. Haku was waiting with four guards standing around a man chained to the wall. "Sinsaru my friend, you're looking a little under the weather." The man raised his head a flashed a blood soaked grin.

"Lei Nakajima, Mamoru finally sent you down to join me on this wall?" Lei smiled and shook his head. "Pity, I was hoping for someone else down here to distract the rats for awhile"

"Even in defeat you remain cheerful as ever Sinsaru, but maybe today is a chance for you to keep the remainder of your toes from the vermin." The man fixated his one eye that wasn't bruised on Lei. "Haha, I see you're interested, good. You're a samurai Sinsaru, you don't admit it, but you are. I dragged you out of those woods with the intention of executing one of my greatest opponents, but now I have need of someone with your skill set."

"So, the Hand of the Murakami needs my help?" Sinsaru strained briefly against chains before melodramatically giving up. "Whats in it for me"

"Only freedom, put a price on it"

"hmph, I see two paths ahead of me and I'm afraid only one of those is appealing. What's your task Nakajima?"

"You know my men, the Dogs of War. A rowdy bunch with little reservation when it comes to death. I need a pack master for these animals, to keep them in line. Will you don the mask of Murakami?"

"Very well Lei Nakajima, I accept your offer, but give me your word on your honor that I will have my freedom when this is said and done."

"But of course Sinsaru, I am samurai, you know my ways." The man was unchained from the wall and let to the ground, where he spent some time massaging his wrists and ankles. When he felt loosened up, he waved his arm around before suddenly lunging at Lei, his fist rushing straight for Lei's head. The samurai caught Sinsaru's punch with his hand, and a guard slammed his spear butt into the prisoners stomach.

"Bastard" He said, doubled over in pain.

"Stop wasting time Sinsaru, I have business to attend to" As the prisoner was walked past Lei, he flicked his wrist and threw something around Sinsaru's neck. The prisoner looked down in shock at the tight iron necklace. "A relic from the old times, I wouldn't try to escape, or mess with it, or you may find yourself losing your head." Sinsaru simply grinned and was dragged away by the guards to the barracks. "Good work Haku, prepare horses and send word out to the tea houses that I'm looking for more samurai to join my men. Lord Murakami will be down for evening prayers soon, I want a detachment of war dogs ready to leave as soon as he is prepared. The Emperor's duty must be fulfilled on a timely manner if I wish to stay within the good graces of dangerous men."

Daisuke was crouched behind a thick tree trunk.

"Come on! Show yourself, you Coward!" Came a demanding voice from somewhere behind him. Notching an arrow to his bow, Daisuke drew the string and peeped around the edge of the tree. There he was, blundering about noisily in the undergrowth, a samurai larger than Daisuke, armed with a crossbow in one hand and a mace in the other. It was only a misunderstanding; Daisuke had been aiming for his head when that servant happened to walk in front of him. Now he had been chased back into a nearby forest. Daisuke did not have time to examine every detail of the samurai but he did notice he had no neck protection. It was better to aim for no armour than risk shooting through armour.

Edging around the tree, being careful not to step on any twigs or dry leaves that would betray his presence, he aimed for the samurai's neck. He loosed the shot. The blundering samurai was lucky twice as he kicked an overgrown tree root and fell over, the arrow shot overhead. Daisuke returned to his position behind the tree.
"Tch... Pest." He muttered under his breath.
"I know where you are now you coward!" Shouted the samurai as he propped himself up using his mace arm and fired his crossbow. Daisuke heard the bolt embed itself in the tree he was hiding behind. He knew there was only one thing for it now. Notching another shaft to his bow he stood up and began a brisk walk towards a thick yew tree. He turned to face the samurai who was hastily attempting to reload his crossbow. Daisuke aimed quick and let the shaft fly. He did not wait to see if it landed and crouched behind the yew tree. He was rewarded with a sickening squelch of impact, a gargling death scream and then the final thud as the samurai went limp.

Breaking cover he went over to retrieve the arrow that had hit a tree, no sense in leaving good ammunition. Due to the chase, Daisuke was in unfamiliar territory. Not being close to Tokyo he was truly out of his element. Keeping to the shadows he made his way West. He had obtained a clan crest from the fallen samurai to prove his deed. He couldn’t keep this pace up, the forest appeared endless. It took Daisuke what he thought was hours to finally break the cover of the trees. He saw in the distance a large mansion of sorts. Staying wary, he moved towards it. He had gotten close enough to see the crest now, the Amano clan. His senses told him to scarper but no sooner had the thought occurred had he heard the sounds of a car.

He had one chance at escape. Quickly drawing two arrows he climbed a nearby Cherry Blossom. He made himself as hard to detect as possible, given the pink colour. Now realising this probably wasn’t the best tree to hide in as he saw a much darker leaved Elm just a few metres away. Too late to change now, he hung tight and held his breath. Not that he needed to, more a hunter’s automatic reaction than anything.

Ryuu's yellow-green eyes narrowed as he maneuvered the car into the Amano estate's driveway. Unless he was very much mistaken (and he knew that he was not) there was a man with a bow perched in that tree.

An awfully poor choice for camouflage, he thought with a trace of suspicion. Would the Amano really be so foolish as to post a guard there, of all places? No, that's not possible. Ryuu had never personally met the new clan head, Kenichiro Amano, but he had known the man's father, back when he still served as an underling of the older Shintate-sama. It seemed highly unlikely that any son that man regarded as fit to succeed him would post a guard in such an obvious place.

This knowledge put Ryuu on alert immediately. He knew Shintate-dono had brought her sword, but simply as a matter of show. One did not fight well in a kimono, regardless of how skilled one was otherwise. Best to warn her, then.

"Shintate-dono, there is a man in that tree. He does not wear the colors of the Amano, and I doubt he works for them. What would you like me to do?" He was aware that as long as they were on the car, they were relatively safe from arrows, being that the glass was specially reinforced against a number of weapons, but they couldn't well just sit there. Ryuu knew what he would do, but this was a decision for Shintate-dono, one that would perhaps give him a measure of her abilities as a commander in unexpected situations.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I am back and I am sorry about my sudden disappearance. I had a lot of problems to deal with but, I am pretty much back on track now. Sorry for the trouble

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Sigh... so I tried to contact all of them. Sicroth replied; I guess he's hoping the GM comes back before he does anything else. The other two messages are still sitting there in my Outbox, which means Misdemeanor and Butterfly haven't even logged on to receive them since I sent them, so... yeah. I'm thinking this is sorta dead. =(

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

It was the first political RP I'd ever been in... And that counts for a lot for me. YOU GET 'EM KIKU!

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Hmm... since our GM has been MIA for almost the entire duration of the RP, I guess I'll send out PMs to the three people that we're missing and ask them if they plan on coming back. I don't want to see this thing die, but since none of us have a way to create or approve new characters, if we don't get the old ones back, we're kinda screwed.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

i'm still here but one of my chas is in jail and my other is waiting for for lady edo so i have been watching and waiting

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

It certainly does, Derotzka, but I don't think that even Sakura, Ryuu, Daisuke, Shizuka, and Namatame (who I'm waiting to bring in at some point) could run the thing, since none of them are technically Neo-Shinsengumi or anything...

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I'm still here if that counts for anything. :P

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Yeah... I was just thinking that. Sakura and Ryuu can't make this rp with themselves.... :(

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Is anyone besides Yumiko and I still out there? Hello...?

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

I super suck, I know! The trip wore me out and when I got back on here, I couldn't think of anything (and I mean ANYTHING) to write for Sakura. I've been mulling some stuff around in my head and I should have something posted up by tomorrow (wednesday) ASAP. I hate it when people take forever to post and I haven't posted in FOREVER.

I suck.

Sorry. T_T

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Hey dudes and dudettes, I'm gonna be offa here for the weekend. Gotta trip I'm going on and I'm going to be watching Broadway shows and shopping a LOT, so I won't have time to do the internet thing! I will be back Tuesday night and will check on things then!!! YAY

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

So its been a while... and Kiku, I cannot remember Ryuu's last post, so that I might respond to it! AAH!!! Would you mind PMing the post? If you still have it... if not, please summarize what in the hell happened because I can only remember vague bits and pieces. :/

I return! Another chance to carve your skulls!

Anyhow... Not sure exactly how Ren should show up at the Edo-estate.

Re: [OOC] Blades Among Chaos-A Modern Samurai Role Play

Had to edit my last post. I hated the ending... It made Sakura even crazier than I actually want her to be. O_o.... She's pretty nuts as it is anyway.
