Introduction

Rome. We are the greatest power known to man. We rule over a domain that rivals the gods. But there are those who don't want to bask in the glory of Rome. These barbarians have fought hard along the Rhine, but we succeeded. Soon, the Germans got desperate. They began fighting like cowards. They will strike, and retreat. This form of warfare is unbeatable if we just stay static. But all is about to change. Four legions have been dispatched to march from the Rhine to the Danube. Leading the spearhead, the 6th Germania Legion would march in first to secure safe passage for the remaining legions. But...All went wrong. Marching deep, the Germans fled using hit and run tactics to slow our advance. Cut off from supplies, we had no choice but to cross the Danube and follow it into Pannonia. Our cavalry went forward to scout ahead to protect our crossing. Unknown to us, they were all slaughtered four miles from the crossing. The Germans moved into a hill across the ford and laid in wait. A flanking force led by a man known as the Wolf prepared to ambush us from the rear and to our right flank on our side of the river. The attack began when our force of 3 centuries were attacked and slaughtered. We watched in horror as they threw and shot missiles at us. We threw our javelins and whatever missiles we had, distracting us from the upcoming assault. A ram horn blew as we were overwhelmed. Quickly forming a massive circle, it be came a damned nightmare. A ditch became a killing pit. Men were thrown and their falls stacked them like wood. We fought hard, and we fought well. It is estimated from locals that we killed over 7,000 Germans. But it was in vain. We were overwhelmed. Of the 5,000 men at that battle, almost everyone was cut down like wheat before the sycth.

But when the killing ended, we awoke in our pits and pulled ourselves out of the carnage. Looking upon this mess, we counted 50 survivors, in my old age, I have forgotten them, but what I do remember, is that not all soldiers were with us. I remember there were woman, and some people other than soldiers, but the details still elude me. We soon formed ourselves into an irregular century. Grabbing what we had, we marched forward towards Pannonia, but not all made it. Now, let me tell you the story...
