Caroline’s Asylum for the Mentally Ill

Caroline’s Asylum was founded in the 1920’s and started out as Ashgrove Asylum. The name was changed in the 60’s and named after Caroline Standford. Caroline checked herself into the Asylum in the 40’s under the illness of “just simply insane”. Her real diagnoses is unknown. The story of Caroline is unclear to this day even by the oldest doctors at the Asylum. The story the Asylum advertises is that she was faking her mental illness, and was like angel sent from above. She was said to have helped patients recover. She made tremendous differences in people. After years of helping people, she just simply dissapeared, some patients said she went to heaven, outsiders or survivors say she went back to hell, where she came from. They say she went completely mad. People say she killed every patient and doctor in the building. Those stories seem unbelievable, but they say she had her ways to get around taking medicine and also access to any place in the building. She had a romantic relationship with two of the doctors. One, Dr. Roger Mann, and the other Dr. Mary Stein. Mary gave her access to medicine, and Roger let her roam wherever she wanted, whenever she wanted. The only person she didn’t kill was her roommate Shanda, whom Carline wanted to spend her life with. She said “Now we can be together. We can help each other.” Shanda killed herself, because Caroline had killed the man she was in love with, another patient there. Caroline dissapeared after that, no one looked for her, because no one seemed to know her. Those are all just stories, though. Patients and doctors often argue over Caroline’s past amongst themselves. It’s a never ending topic, that doesn’t necessarily have to do with anything.
Caroline’s is located in Virginia near a private beach reserved to the more stable patients and Doctors. There are horse stables for equine therapy and the entertainment of staff members. Caroline’s facility is very secluded, and there is a large stone fence at around a 4 mile radius of the mansion. There are only two entrances/exits. The main entrance is the western most point of the wall, and the back door is at the eastern most point of the wall. The main portion of the building is very antique looking, and the wings are additions to the original mansion. The two modern wings are a quite beautiful contrast to the middle portion of the building. The North wing is for long term patients, the South is for short term. A large fenced in courtyard sits right behind the mansion. A large pool is on the outside of the fence, and the only way to get out there is through the pool house. Every patient typically has a roommate of the same gender, depending on sexual orientation. Men’s rooms are on the 3rd floor, and the women’s rooms are on the 2nd floor. The fourth floor is closed to patients. The first floor includes the kitchen and dining hall. There are quiet rooms and a music room on the first floor as well. There are therapy rooms on each floor. Therapy is also held in the courtyard.
