Another new life, another new name... Lord have mercy on my soul... she thought, absently reaching to touch the Rosary about her neck.
Inside, the lights flickered to life as she flipped an old switch. It was truly a miracle the electricity still functioned, as old as the circuits were. Behind the counter, Esther was told, would be the cleaning supplies necessary to get the place spick-and-span for a new day of business. She hummed her favorite tune, Ave Maria, to herself as she busily polished the counters.
Mrs. Hawkins had told her that to do this was not necessary, and reminded her that once she started at school on Monday, she'd have to be up quite early, but Esther had insisted. It isn't just anyone who would agree to take me in after all...
She just hoped America would be more forgiving than Italy had been.

Tracing her fingers over the spines, a mixture of new arrivals and used rarities, she remembered the libraries she had grown up with in Italy. The convent had an impressive collection, but that was nothing compared to the mountains of books to be found in the libraries at St Peter's or the Vatican, the latter of which she'd once had the pleasure of an afternoon in.
Still, this little store was alike to these in spirit if not volume, and she was swiftly lost amidst the shelves, exploring, a slightly wistful look settling over her features.

"Molto strano," she whispered to herself-very strange indeed.
She walked outside cautiously, and looked around, but nobody was in the immediate vicinity. She thought she could see someone near one of the other shops in the area, but that person was too far away to have just been in the little bookshop.
Shaking her head, she took a minute to breathe the fresh air outside, and decided to prop it open, just to get some circulation into the stuffy store. Might make it a little more inviting, too...

He turned, and was surprised to find the girl whom had also been caught out by the book shop's late opening. Now that they were nearer he could see she was only one or two years younger than him. "It's because mankind's greed knows no bounds." he replied in his British accent (he had only moved here last week), before blushing as he remembered that he was trying not to draw attention to himself. He quickly hurried on down the path, intent on not intruding on the girl's thoughts or his practice any longer.

One of the girls seemed a bit younger than herself, but not by much, and the other was at least a couple of years her senior. Not dropping the smile, she greeted them both.
"Benvenuto... er- welcome," she corrected swiftly. However much this little shop reminded her of the ones in Italy, she had to remember that she wasn't home any longer, and probably never would be. "Is there something I can help you find?" In all likelihood, the more frequent customers would know the store better than she, but Mrs. Hawkins had given her the general rundown yesterday, just so she would be able to help anyone looking for something out of the ordinary.

About an hour later, Mrs. Hawkins arrived and took over the store, shooing Esther out and insisting that she explore the town, since it was her first full day there. Shrugging on a light tan jacket and clean white scarf to guard against the cool- which really wasn't all that bad, but still chilly compared to the Mediterranean sun, she stepped outside and began to walk the narrow little byways of the town's small central shopping district, occasionally popping into a store if something interested her.
It wasn't too long after this that her stomach reminded her that she'd skipped breakfast, since she'd been so late to open the shop in the first place. Wondering if there was someplace nearby to grab a bite, she began to poke around in search of a cafe or something. It was times like these that Esther really wished she knew someone around here, a local that could show her where everything was. As early in the morning as it still happened to be, there weren't even that many people out and about, and they all looked like they had somewhere to be; far too busy to answer her idle inquiries at any rate.
She sighed softly to herself. Perhaps when I start school I could make a friend or two. Until then, she supposed, she'd have to give it her best shot alone. Not so different from any other time lately, is it?

Well... I have finished the books I bought a while ago... I guess it wouldn't hurt to get a few more. He thought, entering slowly and cautiously; he watched each person carefully and he immediately walked back to the sci-fi section.

The owner of the store seemed quite busy, but merely waved the girl off when she attempted to help. Deciding to divert her question for the moment, Esther grabbed a large pile of tomes that still needed shelving and decided to make herself useful anyway.
The first book on the pile was a used copy of The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. Well, I guess that goes with scifi then, she thought absently, maneuvering past an elderly gentleman absorbed in a copy of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
"Scusi," she said quietly to the teenager against the back shelf, "I'll only be a moment..." Easing the book off the stack, she transferred the rest into her right arm before searching vainly for "We". Looking up, she found it, and sighed to herself. Of course it would be on the top shelf...
Determined to try, she readjusted the other tomes and stood on her toes, just barely able to reach the necessary shelf... and promptly fell backwards, books hitting the ground beside her.

I think our GM is too, and probably Olivia. We've almost definitely lost the other two kids, and maybe the angel as well though.
Re: [OOC] Chosen Children
But...uhh...is this still active? Nothing's happened for about ten days, so I just wanted to check... *please still be active*

With any luck the place will have Internet, in which case he'll wake up quickly, but I'm not getting my hopes up too much. :(
Sorry for any problems this may cause.
