Background: Gruen and his mother are refugees from the neighboring country of Vernade. As a devastating plague swept across the small country, Patricia and her newborn son escaped over the small rolling hills into Couvere. Establishing a new life was hard for the young widowed mother, forcing her to work long hours at laborious tasks. As a result, her health suffered and she developed a cough deep in her lungs. As Gruen grew older, he fell in with the darker aspects of the large city. He ran with some of the young urchins. As natural as breathing, the other boys looked to Gruen and followed his lead. Together, they got into all sorts of mischief. As they got older, they learned the art of picking pockets and became very adept at the skill. However, they caught the attention of the city guard and most of his friends were caught in a trap. After laying low for a couple months, he fell in with a new crowd of people. From them he learned the best ways to win a fight, the ability to read people and con them, how to cheat, gamble and the other rougher aspects of life.
Gruen was 12 when the ruling monarchs were murdered. At the time, this had no effect on his life. It would, however, change his life when he turned sixteen. After a harsh winter, his ailing mother took a turn for the worse. Barely able to get a breath, she was coughing almost constantly. Desperate to relieve his sickly mother, Gruen journeyed from the city after hearing of a miracle plant that has healing properties. He searched in the mountains and finally came across a hermit who was willing to sell him the plant along with the recipe. However, when he returned to his home, he found she had passed away not long after he had left. With nothing to tie him down, he was recruited into the rebel’s cause. By the time he saw his eighteenth birthday, Gruen had become the leader of the rebels.
