Introduction
City of Isobel, Market District
The sand of time goes on in this eternal city, the busy market spreading various sounds and smell all the way to your small hovel as you awake from your afternoon nap on this hot summer evening. Another night of begging, stealing or for some even killing for the dredge of society you are a part of, and tonight seems like it would be no different.
You wake, yawn and stretch as the sun goes down and get ready for the evening, wearing your threadbare clothes and hiding your trusty dagger, as you know that the street of Isobel are never safe for the like of you, never mind at night! Already you can feel the restlessness of the evening take hold of the small side street you live in, the atmosphere full of expectant silence and hungry timelessness. Tonight is the Desert Rose Festival, a time of merriment and thoughtlessness for all, as food and spicy wines will fill many a belly tonight in honor of the Mother Goddess. Foreign merchants will come, and rich patron will soon fill both brothel and inns to the brim, their indulgent laughter filling the air until dawn.
It is a great opportunity for a pickpocket to find marks or even a would be assassin to find a wealthy patron, should you desire to take this path. Of course, the path of a merchant will also be more accessible tonight, should you impress enough with your financial ruthlessness, a life of an entertainer could also open to you, should you be pretty and nimble enough as well as skilled enough to avoid becoming a mere courtesan. The is, also, the merest chance of being taken as a novice in the Temple of the Mother, here in Isobel. Tonight is the start of something new, the charged air and the thrum of your blood will demand it, but beware, for not all paths leads you to safety...
Dagger in the Sand is the tale of your character, starting in the momentous night of the Desert Rose Festival and continuing on through the sand of time day after day. This tale will be one of exploration and discovery, of wits rather than brawns and, finally, an adventure where taking the right opportunities and risks could make the difference between life and death and glory and obscurity.
It's a harsh world out there, and you will start at the bottom of the barrel. Will you have what it takes to ascend to something more than a small time side street thief? Will you take your talent to more savage ways? Subtle ones? Or will you take a different path entirely and seek salvation from a life of crime? Tonight is your chance at changing the tides, whatever may they be...
Set in the city of Isobel, a great fortress city surrounding an oasis in the desert, you will start with only the knowledge of the side streets of the Market District along with the lower and poorer portion of the marker itself. More will be unveiled as opportunities and discoveries arise, but for now you merely need to know that you will immerse yourself in an Arabian Nights-styled tale of fate and treachery. The world is dangerous, and nothing should be taken for granted if you want to survive.
Isobel in itself is an amalgamation of bleached white buildings of various sizes with the occasional golden dome and carved cliff side to change the monotony of this practical and spartan arrangement of dwellings and shops. Of course, such buildings range greatly in size, from the one roomed hovels near the ramparts of the city to the vast palaces near the oasis at its center. The sun is blinding at noon, and the heat is stifling, making sure that nobody sane is awake in the afternoons.
Isobel is the only sedentary city in the Desert of Sawn, where most dwellers and caravan clans and nomadic tribes. It does, however, stay wealthy from trades from the outside, arriving once a month, that trade food and water for glass ornaments, sculptures and rare stones found in the bowel of the city's mines.
The primary religion in the city is the Cult of the Mother, said to have birthed the Sun and the Moon who themselves made the stars, ancestors of men. The Mother is said to be a benevolent goddess, a deity of medicines and miracles, and Her followers are forbidden from killing anyone as soon as they took their vows. Her symbol is a simple circle over a slightly larger half moon, they both ritually made in either white, gold or silver.
How does this all work, you ask? It's quite simple, really. You will control one sole character and interact with the world you find yourself in, stopping every time the result of your actions are unclear to you to let the world, through me, react to you. For that purpose, I will ask of you to do your best to stay in character, enjoy yourself and provide thorough posts, as I will mirror your own efforts with my own. Good effort and great enjoyment are the key to a long lasting roleplay, after all!
Now, I will ask of you one more thing:
At the start of each of your posts, once you are accepted, I would like you to specify the name of your character, the vague time of the day and finally whether the post is an Action or a Movement, if it be the later I would also ask you to end said post to where you are going, for an easier time to track you down.
A very basic example:
Aisha
Evening
Movement
Skulking down the dark streets, the young woman quickly looked about her surroundings and darted down the dusty alley, her destination clear in her mind.
Leaving for the Temple of the Mother
Now, finally is the time to create your character! In this section I will leave you to your creativity, with only one reminder: the world your character inhabits is filled only with humans but is still completely different from ours, in that both the geography, history and general knowledge is alien to our world. To make it short, the world is far more centered on religion, commerce and medicine than war, science and art, and that shows. So no phones, and certainly no angsting characters! They have no knowledge or time for those things!
Lastly, a good character should be relatable, described in both appearance and general history, and have at least a basic personality to build upon. Please do not make a Mary Sue or a Garry Stu! Most of all, have fun!
