Introduction

Running a restaurant in the Upper West Side is just as difficult as running an arms cartel.

Or, so Brian heard his father say almost every day for the past twenty-five years. Personally, he debated the comparability of the two, but the issue only came up when his uncle and cousins were around. This usually became Brian's clue to clear out, and go hunting for some fresh air.

The specific definition of 'fresh air' had changed since Brian was old enough to understand what was going on. At first it had been just watching TV in the next room, but now Brian excused himself whenever he was able. On this particular night in 2010, however, Brian wordlessly decided he had things to do elsewhere -- and left the shouting in the kitchen.

Everything in the Derossi had been swept, cleaned, and stacked for the day. The last patron had wandered out about a half hour ago, along with most of the staff. Brian stood in the center of the main dining room, wanting a smoke, but he fought that specific urge.

He did slip out the side door, though, and into the alley facing Belmont street. It was a cool October night and Brian rested his head against the brick of their building.

Talk of money, talk of the authorities. That's what they'd cycle through in there. Brian folded his arms over his chest and closed his eyes.

When he opened them again, he unexpectedly found that he was not alone.

It looked like a short man, sort of just standing there across the alley. Brian coughed awkwardly into his fist to cover the racing of his heart.

"Are they inside?"

"Excuse me?"

The man's voice was light and pleasant. No one's voice had a right to be light and pleasant at 11:30 at night, in the back of an alley near a dumpster. "Your uncle. His sons. Are they inside?"

Brian groped behind him against the wall. He found the switch for the flood light his father had installed to ward away rodents from the trash cans, and flipped it. and bright electric light flooded the alley. He blinked twice from the sudden illumination, and realized that the alley was mostly deserted

Weird ..

"It's a simple question." The voice came from next to him, now, and Brian felt a hand clamp around his throat, and slam his head back against the wall. "Maybe you should invite me inside so we can both find out."

Brian shot up with a knee and the man (the vampire) grunted. He followed up with a fist, but caught nothing.

The next thing Brian knew was pain. It felt like claws digging into his shoulder, and he was forced down to one knee.

"I don't want to have to kill you." The strange man lied. From this position, all Brian could see of him were torn jeans, but nice shoes. "But you should really let me in. I've been waiting out here for far too long."

"Sorry, sir, but you did not make a reservation." Said another, much clearer voice from somewhere off away in the darkness. Brian grunted and tried to look up -- he saw a flash of green and heard the sound of birds' wings -- then watched the strange man tumble end over end down the alley and away from him. Brian swore, clutched at his shoulder, and stood.

"Was that alright?" The second voice said anxiously. Brian realized he wasn't being addressed. "Anya? It needs work, I know." The voice finished humbly. "I suppose I didn't realize we needed to introduce ourselves onto a scene with one-liners in the first place."

Brian muttered profanities again for a few more seconds, feeling the blood now under his fingers. Between the flash of light, the man who had attacked him and these other voices off in the darkness, he wondered if he had fallen and hit is head on the way outside.

"Yeaah, definitely needs work." Anya chuckled, walking forwards, booted feet splashing in the occasional puddle as she made her way down the alleyway. A shotgun was slung casually over her shoulder, the business end pointing to the sky as the blonde woman walked. "Would have worked better if this guy had said it, seeing as he works here."

Anya pointed at Brian. More alarmingly perhaps, she pointed with the shotgun -- though she had no intention of firing it, Brian didn't know that, and so it was likely a relief when the woman passed him by and approached where the vampire had supposedly fallen.

"The vamp's gone." she called back to Legion, turning her head. "You think that his buddies'll have gone inside already?"

"I think we would have heard something by now." Legion strode into the circle of light cast by the pale florescent bulb. "Did you hear what he said? He demanded to be let in. Odd to see that sort of traditional quirk in a vampire these days, hmm?"

Brian cleared his throat slightly.

"Oh! Pardon me." The ex-demon approached Brian, who didn't know what to make of the sunglasses and suit look so late at night. "Your family is in grave danger."

"That's quite a 'hello' I'll admit." Brian tried rolling his shoulder. It hurt. A lot. He grimaced. "Just who the hell are you, and what are you talking about when you say vampire?"

"It's rather straightforward." Legion slid into an easy parade rest. "Your uncle is marked to be killed by the Coven."

Brian glanced over at the woman with the shotgun, and then down at the body.

"He's dead?"

"That's right."

" .. By a blast of light."

"Well, essentially, I suppose."

"And you said he was a vampire?"

"A rather traditional one, we assume."

"And you said .. you said there were others?"

It might have been the blood loss, but Brian felt like he had to sit down. "I need to go inside."

"I wouldn't recommend it." Legion said in a suddenly sharp voice. "If there are more like that fellow around, just opening that door to return could be considered an 'invitation.'"

"Of course." Brian sat down on the step anyways. His arm was trembling, now. "Look. Mister. Do you have a flash of light for a bandage, or something .. ?"

"Don't be such a wuss." Anya rolled her eyes, walking back over. "You look like a strong guy, man up!" the blonde scanned the rooftops from where she stood, reaching behind her to grab something. When he hand returned to Brian's view, it was holding a sharpened, rather deadly looking wooden stake.

"Here, hold this." she proffered the blunt end of the stake to Brian, nodding up at the rooftops. "Anything comes down from there, and gets past us, stab it in the heart. Don't miss." she instructed calmly, depositing the stake on the floor if he handed taken it and walking to the opposite wall of the alleyway.

"I might go up to find them." Anya lifted a booted foot to test the strength of the drainpipe, clicking her tongue. "I can't imagine they're going to be considerate enough to come down to us in nice, easy to kill batches like friendly over there." She gestured at the pile of ash.

Legion had to agree. He turned back to Brian, who was gripping the stake with an odd sort of familiarity. "I don't suppose you'd want to stay here by yourself, do you?"

"Depends." The shotgun woman had been right. The pain in his shoulder was receding, if only slightly -- replaced by a burning feeling all throughout his body. Brian didn't know exactly what was going on, but he didn't like how close he had just come to getting killed. "Depends how fast those things are."

"Very fast." The ex-demon replied. He turned, nodded to Anya in a wordless sign that she should go on ahead and shout if she needed backup -- not that she would. "But they are overconfident. Slow, in that regard."

"Alright. Tell your friend there's a loading dock on the other side of the building. They might try to get in that way, if traditional doors are such an issue."

Legion tipped an imaginary hat, and took a few steps away from Brian. He made a sweeping motion with both arms, there was a sudden gust of wind (Brian heard the rattle and rush of old newspapers and cans whipping around) and the oddly polite man in a very extensive suit was gone.

"I like him." Legion murmured as he pulled himself the rest of the way up and onto the roof. The ex-demon put his hands in his pockets, sauntering over to where Anya crouched. "Seems amicable. Knows the right way to hold a stake." Getting down to business, Legion snapped his gaze ahead. "Now .. do you see anything?"

Such dizzying heights meant nothing to either the ex-demon, the killer, or their quarry. Even as they loomed high above New York City, Legion couldn't help casually wondering if he could get a free meal at the Derossi for their good deeds at some point in the future ..

"A damsel in distress is a damsel in distress, whether they're a damsel or not, and whether they know which way to point a sharp piece of wood." Anya noted, shrugging, "But as damsels go, he's not as quivery or weepy as most."

Straightening, Anya stepped forward carefully. She spotted slight movement out of the corner of her eyes, and narrowed them. The shotgun was held ready, and with each step Anya drew nearer to the metal vent that the vampire was hiding behind, believing himself unseen.

"Can't see anything.. nothing at all. Maybe they're on another roof." Anya said, louder than was necessary. As she passed the vent, the vampire leapt, but Anya was already facing it. And pulling the trigger.

The woman -- or what was left of her -- catapulted backwards with the force of the gunshot and landed on her back, one arm dangling off the edge of the building. Anya approached her, a grim smile on her face. "Lights out, sweetheart." she murmured, winking, before retrieving a second stake from her belt.

She hovered it over the vampire's torso for a moment before ascertaining that it was at the heart, gave one last click of the tongue, before plunging it downwards. And then the woman was dust.

"How any more d'you reckon there are?" Anya called over to Legion, tossing her hair as she turned.

"He said the loading doors near the back might be a target." Legion was already striding along the edge of the roof as cool-as-you-please with his hands still in his pockets. "I'll check it out."

The ex-demon took a look down from above. He saw dark figures alright, and he also saw the dark hulking shape of what was probably a large vehicle.

"Oh how very clever .. " Legion muttered into the wind. Though the vampires could not force entry on their own, it was perfectly legitimate to smash something into the door, so long as they were not the ones doing the smashing. When the sound of an engine humming to life reached his ears, the ex-demon figured it was time to work something out.

He could reach two out of the four tires from this distance, and with a quick, controlled and leveled blast of air (air was deadly when forced into the correct shape, and thrust from afar) the van suddenly listed with a POW worthy of any gunshot.

Now that the targets inside were aware of something happening outside, Legion's job was to incapacitate the vampires before they could take advantage of their prey coming to them. He exhaled slightly to focus himself, leaped off the building and hurled those flashes of green light as he did so. He looked, the ex-demon imagined, quite impressive.

Legion slammed onto the black van, and from there rolled to the ground. He landed on his feet just as the car alarm started to shriek. The last vampire was giving him trouble -- darting this way and that, using the darkness to his advantage.

"You are making this difficult." The ex-demon said conversationally, sliding his foot to the side and listening to the earth. He heard pattering footsteps to his right --

-- the vampire had zipped in for a cross, but found nothing there instead. Legion wrapped his hand around the wrist coming for his jaw, stepped to the side, braced his other hand against the vampire's arm and slammed him into the side of the van with all the love and tenderness a well-placed grappling move can.

After a quick flash of green, Legion tilted his head back, and thought he saw an Anya-like shape there on the rooftop. The ex-demon raised his fist, pointer finger extended. There was one who had gotten away.

All at once, there came a high-pitched screaming from the other side of the restaurant. Brian. The screaming continued as Legion broke into a run. When he rounded the corner, curled hand already nursing a blast of magic -- he saw Brian lying there on the ground, a vampire crouched over him. Wait. No.

Just as Legion realized what was really happening here, Brian looked up, bloody stake in hand. The young man shrugged. "Sorry about the mess, I just didn't know how many times I was supposed to stab him."

Brian rose to his full height, hooked his foot under the vampire's chest, and flipped him down the steps and onto the ground. The vampire gave one final moan, and melted away into dust. Expression strained, Brian tossed Legion the stake.

"Here. Take this."

Anya jumped down from the roof to land in a crouch in the alleyway, looking up in time to see the bloodied stake being tossed. The assassin lifted her eyebrow, walking over as she wiped her own stake off on a scrap of the vampire woman's clothing that she had retrieved from her ashes.

"Nicely done." she noted, flashing a respectful grin. "Maybe you aren't such a wuss after all, huh? You do this kind of thing often? Some sort of Derossi family secret, Creme de la Vampire?"

"I've never been a wuss." Brian said shortly.

He would have said something wry about how long it had taken shotgun girl to get back down here, but he heard a door banging open somewhere around the corner of the building. That car alarm hadn't quieted yet, and almost nothing was louder than rapid, angry Italian.

"Clear out." Brian ordered. He wiped his hands on his jeans, and looked from the man in the suit, to the woman with the shotgun. "I've got it from here. Just .. promise me you'll come back, and explain more. Alright?"

He didn't really give them a chance to agree, or not. He started jogging back to where his uncle and his cousins probably were, an adequate story for what had happened already forming in the back of his minds.

"I really like him." Legion said again, musingly, as he watched the young man go. "Not many civilians could kill a vampire that quickly."

The ex-demon handed Anya her stake back, and began to stroll towards the street. Brian was right -- he was best suited to fabricate what had happened here, and the vampires had been taken care of anyways.

For now.

"I mean, Anya, you must have seen it. He really is quiet handy with that stake .. "

"Yeah yeah, I saw it." Anya smirked. "They are kind of intuitive to use, though. Pointy end goes into vampire. Don't get your fanboy drive into gear yet, Legion, we don't know the guy. He might turn out to've just been lucky."

As the two strolled away from the restaurant, Anya chuckled. "And since when was I the cynical one?" The assassin fastened the stakes back onto her belt, peering over her shoulder at where angry Italian words were being exchanged, accompanied by equally angry gestures.

"You never know, though. He might turn out to be more than meets the eye..." she waved her hand vaguely, "You know, not in a bad way, in a killing things way."

"Yes." Was all Legion really had to say. If it came down to quantifying a human based on their ability and readiness to kill another living thing (or, rather, in this case -- a non-living thing) then the small part of him that had been forced into a conscious was not entirely comfortable.

"I suppose what I meant as well is that he is a good man." Legion tried again as the pair strolled away from the scene. "If he were simply enjoying the feel of death, or un-death as it were, then I would not be lauding him so highly. But yes. We will go back to visit him, I hope. Finding his apartment should not be too hard to do, and I assume that he assumes we have that ability to find him."

Anya nodded. "We should talk about this later, I have a contact I have to meet in..." she glanced at her watch "...twenty minutes ago. Catch you later, Legion."

Conveniently, by this point they had reached the space where Anya had parked her car -- her nice, shiny black porsche, she would have you note -- and with a salute the blonde woman pulled open the door and stepped inside. In short order she was revving off with a screech of tyres.

Three days later, Brian heard a knock on the front door of his apartment, and he knew.

Knew what, he wasn't sure. That what had happened that Wednesday night was about to be explained? That things weren't going to be the same since he brought that stake down on the man in the alley?

The vampire, Brian corrected himself. He had been in the process of fixing himself something to eat, but closed the cupboard door, and crossed to the entryway.

"Impressive," Brian said when he pulled open the door and found the well-dressed man there standing patiently, "you didn't even need me to ring you in."

"Oh, I probably should have done that, I suppose," Legion sounded anxious as he stepped past Brian and into his apartment, "I hope you don't think me rude. I just forget things like that."

"No, no, don't worry about it," Brian gestured vaguely, "make yourself at home, I guess. Say -- where's shotgun girl?"

"Right here!"

Brian might have been surprised to hear Anya speaking from behind him, in his main living area, or he might not have been. Anya was lounging on the couch, working her way through a box of chocolates that may or may not have been in Brian's cupboard a few minutes earlier.

"See, I can't do the whole appearing right outside the door thing. But seeing as Legion forgot to be rung in, I figured that pressing the button would just make me look bad..." Anya paused to throw a chocolate in her mouth, chewing it for a few moments before swallowing.

"...so I climbed in through your window. It's nice and considerately big."

"Shhh .. "

Brian let the curse trail off as he spun around. His hand jumped to the back of his neck. "Do you always do that?"

Once he got over the initial shock, though, Brian seemed to settle. He glanced outside -- his window faced the fire escape of the neighboring building. "I guess it would be pretty easy to get in here. Thanks for not breaking it."

Not that she would have needed to. It was open a sliver, she would just have to wedge her foot and wrench the thing upwards. Brian crossed his arms over his chest, and then swung back around to where the woman, and the man in the expensive suit had made themselves at home.

"Since I told my dad that someone was trying to break into the restaurant, my uncles men have been posted around the building. Will these vampires try to attack again? At night, at day? What can I tell them?"

Legion tilted his head to the side. "That they are in danger?"

Brian grinned. "They're Derossis. What else can I tell them?"

"You could try explaining that these people all belong to a religious group that consider it blasphemy to look at a crucifix, and thereby convince them to carry them." Anya suggested idly, resting her feet on Brian's coffee table. "Orr not, your choice. Depends on how ridiculous you want to sound."

Anya yawned, popping another chocolate into her mouth. "Well, they're vampires, so they won't come back in the day. If they come back at all. You have any idea why a vamp might be interested in your buddies back there, or anything you've got in the restaurant?"

The assassin waved her hands vaguely in the air. "You know, ancient artefacts of forgotten hells, blood pacts, that sort of business."

"No." Brian said shortly. "And feet off the coffee table."

He sat next to her on his couch, bodily removed her legs so that they thumped back to the floor. "And I figured about the daylight thing -- what kind of vampires are we talking about, here? Twilight vampires, Van Helsing vampires? Can they go outside, but they're just not --" He felt slightly ridiculous, "--powerful? Or do they actually erupt?"

"That all depends, believe it or not." Legion said in a low voice. "The commercial perception of vampires likes to portray them as one blanket ideal -- when really, as far as vampires in the city go -- they're more like predators than .. " The ex-demon searched for the word.

Brian raised his eyebrows. "Models?"

"I suppose .. "

The young man stroked the line of his chin, feeling three-day-old stubble. "And I can't say I know what they're up to. My whole life I've made a point of staying out of what it is they do on the south side -- but if it comes down to it, I could help you find out."

"Hey, don't-- manhandle me." Anya protested, elbowing Brian irritably. "My legs are worth more than your restaurant, thank you very much." That was a half truth. The legs themselves weren't pricey, but Anya wouldn't be great at her business if she couldn't use them; and she charged a heck of a lot.

Which didn't sound sketchy at all.

"Anyway. I figure if these vampires are the sort that turn to dust when you stab 'em with a stake, they'll be the type that do the same in sunlight." The assassin pondered this over another two chocolates, before discovering the box was empty and pressing it into Brian's hands. It was his, after all.

"Sounds like investigation is in order! A little bit of detective work."

"Which is unusual in itself!" Legion put in helpfully. "Your usual inner city vampire can't be bothered with turning to dust, or needing permission before accessing a building. This says to me, at least, that whatever it is your uncle has found himself in -- it's not just involving any sort of vampire."

Brian smirked at hearing the words 'usual' and 'vampire' in the same sentence. "So by day we're safe. That means for the last three days, what? They've just been .. rallying? Thinking of a new strategy besides just walking in circles around the restaurant?"

"It is a mystery." The ex-demon said, tweaking his tie.

"A mystery. I can deal with that." Brian put his own feet up on the coffee table, now, his smirk turning to Anya. "I'll talk to my uncle. It's feasible that after I came so close to danger, I'd want to know a little bit about what went on the other night."

Of course, internet stalking was a far less sophisticated term than she used professionally, but digging around and finding things to exploit around a target -- or even a client -- was something that Anya did on a regular basis.

Brian wrinkled his nose slightly, thinking of vampire dust getting into people's homes through their windows, causing hay fever and sneezing. He would have wrinkled it again upon hearing how Anya was going to 'stalk' the Derossi family, but that would have been silly.

"Good luck with that. On paper, the Derossi family is nothing but a list of penal code violations, but all written in pencil. There's little definitive proof, or else there'd be less business for me, and more of my family members in jail." Brian shrugged. "Dig deep if you want, though .. but you won't find anything from the outside. I'm your man if you want information. I'm what you call a favorite cousin."

"Anya has pools of information that are a bit .. outside the usual use of law enforcement." Legion said with his usual delicacy. He toyed with his cuff links, and if he wore a watch he would have glanced at it. "But you do make a point. When can you get this information?"

Brian shrugged. "I don't see why I can't go down there today. Now, even. What -- are you guys gonna come along? Tag behind me, or something?" He imagined invisibility cloaks and walkie-talkies. "You know what? Never mind, I don't wanna know."

He rose to his feet, ripped the half-eaten box of chocolates away from Anya, and headed to the closet where his coat was. "I'll be taking the subway down. I assume you'll follow me, but the address is on South Clark street anyways."

"You're a real charming woman, you know that?" Brian gingerly lifted her coat off the rack as well, not wanting to send off any, say, pressure-sensing explosives, like. He was glad to deposit it into Anya's arms, and he was also glad to put the chocolate back in the cupboard.

Legion had risen to his feet by the time Brian shouldered his way into his jacket. Brian tilted his head to the side.

"So, dude in Armani and lady with the shotgun. You know, I never actually got your names .. "

"No." Legion said in a soft voice. He tweaked his tie one final time. "No, you didn't,"

Brian nodded. Fair enough. He zipped the jacket up part way, walked to the door, flung it open and would have escorted them both out -- but he had to grin at Anya.

"If you're going out the same way you came in .. " The man said, "make sure you leave the window open about three inches. I like a good crossbreeze sometimes."
