Dragonback

Dragonback

0 INK

When an army of dragons and riders protect your city, you know you’re safe. At least, until the enemy finds their own dragons.

2,920 readers have visited Dragonback since Everscale created it.

Introduction

Image
Dragonbacks.
That’s what they call them.
Soldiers that ride those… those things. That’s all the citizens of Drakon see. Even the standard military personnel look at the Dragonbacks and see only lizard-monsters, and the people who somehow trust them.
And those people who somehow trust the dragons… you have just become one of them.

Every month, two new recruits are taken into the Dragonbacks, and given their own hatchlings to raise. Every month, a strange new life begins for two new apprentices, as their mentor guides them through training in flight, combat, and dragon-care. For many years, that is all life in the Dragonbacks has been. Peaceful bonding between human and dragon.
But now, for the first time in decades, there is a threat on the wind.

Then again, as new apprentices, you don’t have to worry about that. All you have to worry about is bonding with your baby dragon, training it, getting to know it.
And gathering the skills you’ll need to live as a Dragonback.
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Your dragons are still babies; only a few days old.
Someday, they will look like this.
Image
But right now, the poor scraps look a little bit more like…
Image
… and are roughly half the size of a small cat. They can not yet regulate their body temperature, and are all but helpless without the care of either you of their birth mother.
In this case, it will be you.
Dragons can come in almost any color (so dragon-players, be creative!) and with almost any patterns; the most common being tiger-like stripes and cheetah-like spotting. They have a mild neurotoxin in their fangs at birth, which will paralyze anything they deem a threat for about ten minutes; long enough for them to run or find a hiding place. This venom goes away as they get older, and become large enough to cope without it. Their claws, too, are extremely long and sharp, and can be used as weapons from the moment they hatch. Some dragons have spikes on the ends of their tails which can make even that end dangerous. What did you think all the thick leather in the uniform was for; show?
And you don’t have to worry about getting burned. By the time a dragon develops its fire-breath, it’s old enough to know better than to just attack anything that startles it.
Still, in spite of the danger, dragons are very social creatures. Once you have gained the trust of a dragon, even a hatchling will defend you with its life. They become highly loyal companions, and many Dragonbacks take great delight in the deep, rumbling purr of a dragon that is being scratched in the right spot.

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-

Now, today is your first day among the ranks of the Dragonbacks. First, you will meet your mentor; a trusted member of the Dragonbacks who has seen many years with her dragon, and several battles. She will give you your standard equipment; gun, sword, and armor. These will keep you alive throughout your training, until you earn the right to find your own personal weapon-preference.
The gun is semi-automatic, and will have no affect against the scales of dragons, if you miss. It’s only good on the flesh of humans; which is usually the only thing you have to fight. This weapon is something you will not carry with you; you will take it out only when you are ordered to do so.
The bastard sword has to be worn across your back; it’s too big, especially for kids your age; to wear anywhere else. Each sword is in the range of five feet in length.
The leather armor won’t do you good against flames or bullets. But against the teeth, claws, and tail of a baby dragon, it will keep you safe.
Finally, once you have received your equipment, it is time to collect your dragon. The incubator room is kept dark and silent; and you should be quiet, too, while the staff in the nesting room collect them for you. Especially if you don’t want to startle a few restless mother dragons who are sitting on their nests.
For your hatchlings, it will be the first time out of the nesting room. They will be nervous, which usually means a lot of biting, scratching, and crying. Don’t forget to wear your gloves and armor while handling them for the first few days.
When you finally leave the incubator room, there will be lots of loud noises, bright lights, strange scents for them to deal with. Try to find a way to make them feel more comfortable; both while you’re transporting them, and once you and your fellow apprentice have been taken to the dorm room you will share throughout your lives as Dragonbacks.
And yes, they are babies. They will cry at night, they will want to be fed.
Try to get as much sleep as you can; training starts the next day.

And yes; before anyone asks, dragons do speak. Full-blown English, since that’s the language of the rp. But they speak baby-talk at first; a few spurts of sentences, learned while their mothers talked to them in the egg. Where they can speak fluent Drakon, they must learn more English little by little.

Dante gravely nodded his head, he understood the full gravity to have a parent that he didn't see eye to eye with. Then again Dante still had his mother, his little sister too. Dante was permitted to visit from time to time, when he wasn't spending time with Songrose, Shalen and Marek Dante was either practicing or he was visiting family. Giving them updates and telling them about Marek. They didn't seem to mind and for that Dante was thankfull. One of the main reasons he had entered himself into the dragonbacks was for them. If they would've shunned Dante for that... well then things would would be very dismal for Dante. The same thing may have happened to Tony, though he didn't know her initial motivation to become a dragon back.

He turned to Marek after he spoke up.

"Soon, Marek. Very soon." Dante reassured him.

A little busy - I don't have much to say for Marek right now anyway. Once they get going which I'm assuming is probably the next post, I'll have something decent to write!

Tony shook off her irritation, glancing back at the apprentices.
"So... we have two choices. We can fly in the city, or we can go out beyond the borders for our first few rides. Just keep in mind that you will eventually have to learn to dodge between buildings, since the whole point here is to be able to patrol."

"Yes," Tanith agreed. "Let us not defeat the purpose."

Songrose watched as Tony seemed to relax a bit. Perhaps, as she had thought, she shouldn't have brought it up. She shrugged it off mentally, though, and listened carefully when Tony changed the subject. "...I would say that it's best to learn to avoid the buildings early on...but we still need to get used to flying outside without having to worry about the buildings early on." She paused to debate, glancing at Shalen as if asking him silently, but then looked back to Tony. "Perhaps it would be best to start learning to go through the city. We're going to have to learn it anyway, so this way we'll already know this, and it would be easier to adjust from dodging a lot of buildings to open land than from open land to dodging buildings..." she suggested quietly.

Finally things were getting somewhere....he thought. Oblivious to the exchange between Tony and Songrose about their Mentor's name, Marek quieted down a bit when Dante spoke. He took his rider's, his best friend's words for what they were and managed to suppress his impatience temporarily. Exhaling a husky breath, his tail swished absentmindedly as he turned back to Shalen. The riders were now deciding between open area flying and city flying. Something in his gut felt like open area would be better, at least...until he sort of knew what he was doing. Not that he didn't think he could do it! No! Absolutely not, but despite his seemingly reckless unfearfulness Marek didn't exactly want to crash into buildings on his first try. But whatever the decision, he'd give it his all, 210% each and every time. "What'cha think Shalen? City or Field?" He curiously asked his two-legged dragon companion.

"Agreed." Dante grunted. Flying through the city would be much more beneficial. He agreed because of songrose reasons that she had voiced to the group. Adjusting would be easier. Though then again getting a feel for flying would also benefit them. As Dante could see himself acidentally falling off because Marek was forced to maneuver away from a building. Dante would only need one flight to adjust hopefully. If he was lucky he could pull of a city fly through without problems. Then again that was all Dante seemed to do. Just get by. He gave it his all but he still messed up every now and then. Still he wouldn't fail Marek Tony or Tanith. He had too much riding on this. Pun most definately not intended.

"Alright," Tony agreed easily. Then she looked down at the dragons. "What do you two think? City?"

Shalen hesitated slightly, and then nodded, earning a rumbling laugh from his father.

"A brave hatchling," Tanith observed easily.

"Hardly a hatchling anymore, Tanith," Tony observed. Then she paused. "Everyone hold one. We've got to climb out of here, so we're going vertical for a bit."

Songrose glanced down at the younger dragons as Tony asked them what they thought. She grinned as she noticed that Shalen agreed with her, then looked up as Tanith started laughing. Hatchling...wasn't he older than that? Tony seemed to think so, too. She hesitated when Tony said they had to go vertical for a while, then shifted her position so she could hold on tighter. She wasn't about to fall, not from a height like this, anyway.

With a a bit more vigorous nod matching Shalen's, Marek's swished his tail about and readied himself for flight. Okay, so the city it was. The midnight blue dragon was more than ready to give 210% into navigating Dante safely through the city. Then when the got to the field, it'd be a relaxing flight. Until then, Marek itched with anticipation and excitement his impatient nature rearing it's head as he started to fidget yet again.

Dante nodded and gripped the saddle with his legs more so than his arms, remembering everything he had learned. When making a vertical climb it was usually best to use a combination of both leg strength and arm strength. He breathed out slowly once again going through the skills and techniques he had attained in those countless hours of training. Dante's body was better fit to be in the air now. He wouldn't let anyone down. Trainer friend or fellow dragon back. To fail was to embarass Marek. He would not fail.

"Let's go," Tony laughed, and with a powerful surge, Tanith went vertical, climbing up towards the surface with the drakelings close behind.

(And time skip~)

The city was alive, thriving with people. Trying to navigate the streets with a massive dragon would have been impossible were it not for one crucial factor.

People were terrified of dragons.

As such, they cleared a great path in front of Tanith. Cars drove up on the sidewalks to avoid him, and the white dragon walked with his head held proud and high, wings half-spread, tenting over the drakelings to keep them out of harm's way. Shalen was hopping along, tail whipping so wildly in his excitement that he nearly carried himself off of his feet.

"Those are the stables, just ahead," Tony told them, pointing at a long, tall building that reached half as high as most of the skyscrapers in the city. "The dragons will be ready for you. We'll be taking it slow, especially since your dragons have never flown before."

Songrose glanced around at all the other people as Tanith made his way through them. She frowned slightly, then shook her head. "I don't understand...why they're so frightened of dragons. I mean, yeah, the fully-grown ones are big, but they don't seem to be mean..." She trailed off, glancing around again. Could she find any of her siblings in this mess? ...No...she couldn't find any of them. Just as well, she supposed; she couldn't exactly stop to greet them even if she had seen them. Instead, she looked up at the building Tony had pointed out. That was where they were heading...so as soon as they got there, they wouldn't have to worry too much about seeing all of these frightened people.

Marek bounded about in the shade given by Tanith's wings. He was more amused than anything that the people did everything in their power to get out of the massive white dragon's way. He saw it as a tribute to just how cool Tanith was. Tail whipping behind him, Marek dared to dash just out of Tanith's partially extended wing span and near the edge's of people with a toothy grin. However before he could even get close enough to speak, the people screamed and stumbled back, some turning to run. Persistent, Marek attempted to greet some new faces again with a new wave of excitement but again as he pranced on over, he was met with the same reaction except by a small little boy. "Hey!" The blue dragon puffed out, ducking his head to the child's level. In awe, the child went to extend a hand to pet the dragon before suddenly's a women who must have been the boy's mother snatched him up in rage and at the same time terror. "Stay away from him!" Severely confused, Marek's head swung around to look to Dante or Tony for an answer.

(Sorry it took so long guys, been busy lately with school work T.T)

Dante jumped into the conversation too. Feeling as if he was this quiet every mission a cohesive team couldn't form. "I mean the first time we walked into the hatcheries we were nervous at best, then again people fear what they don't know." Dante spoke. People had a bad habit of running from change, something that would follow them till the ends of the Earth. Change made everything foreign in someone's life. People liked to have everything stay the same within reason. When Marek tried to play with other humans they seemed to either run off or carry away the others that were curious. When Marek looked up at him for an answer as well as Tony his stomach clenched up. What was he supposed to say. People thought he was a monster? Dante tried to answer to the best of his ability. He didn't have an answer for Marek. How could Dante expect to say something he himself didn't understand. He also looked to Tony for an answer.

It was not Tony, but Tanith that turned to Marek, stretching his great wing out and scooping the drakeling closer to his side.
"You shouldn't run at them like that," he rumbled softly. "It looks like you are going to attack them. They will run away if you move too quickly."

Shalen made a small churring sound and bounced unevenly over to Marek, giving his friend a nudge.
"It's alright," he encouraged brightly. "You can play with me!"

"Everyone look," Tony called, gesturing with her chin to the road ahead. "There are your dragons."

They stood in majestic beauty, long necks arched proudly, movements unhindered by their tack; saddles and bridles nearly identical to Tanith's. One of them were deep green, his scales shimmering in the sun. The other, slightly smaller, was red, and looked younger than the first, like he was more likely to run off without warning, or disobey his rider. He looked faster.

"Dellis," Tanith called out, and the green dragon turned. "Akora," the red dragon showed no sign that he had heard.

Songrose smiled at Shalen as he tried to play with the other young dragon. It was a good thing they got along with each other, she reflected. She paused, though, and looked ahead as Tony pointed out the dragons they would be riding. She tilted her head as Tony called out to the dragons, watching the green one turn to look, but the red one seemed to ignore her. She shook her head; well, at least the dragon looked like it would have plenty of energy. Whether or not he could be able to control it was another story. Still, she showed a grin to the older dragons. She would be riding one of them, after all. So...who's riding which dragon?"

Marek blinked twice in his confusion for the moment following Dante's silence. When suddenly he was scooped over by a massive white wing. The rumble of Tanith's chest as he spoke was oddly soothing to the younger dragon. Don't run at them, it looks as if you are going to attack them. Mulling over the thought, Shalen broke the blue dragon out of his thoughts resulting in a toothy grin in response to his fellow drakeling. Moments later when Tanith spoke again, Marek's gaze looked forward in sudden awe. His silver eyes twinkled at the sight of the green and red dragon's ahead of them. The sudden desire to fly filled his belly and mixed with excitement, adrenaline, and anticipation.

"Alright," Tony called. "Dante, I want you up on Akora. He can be a bit tough, but he'll take care of you when you're airborne. Songrose, you'll be riding Dellis."

Tanith lay down on his stomach, giving the apprentices less distance to jump.
"Dragons, you'll fly alongside your riders. All of you remember, these dragons are older. They have more experience. If you fall, they will know, and they will catch you. You are in no real danger today. Tanith and I will be flying right behind you."

Dante nodded slightly, careful to hide his anxiety, and slid off of Tanith's back. He approached Akora warily, but the red dragon did not turn or acknowledge him. Swallowing tightly, he grabbed the saddle straps and swung up onto Akora's back. The dragon didn't react, which made him more nervous than it should.

Songrose nodded and looked to the dragon she had been told to ride, to Dellis. She glanced over the green scales of the dragon, then the red one, then back to her own gold dragon, to Shalen. "Dragons really do have scales of every color, don't they?" she mumbled to herself as she approached Dellis cautiously. He was older and more experienced, she knew, but she didn't want to accidentally do something to set the older dragon off. She looked back at his head before climbing up onto his back. Once on the dragons back, she looked down to Shalen. "Make sure you keep up, Shalen; it'll be good practice for you, won't it?" she encouraged. It made sense to her that he would fly better than the other young dragon; he used his wings to balance himself so much more than other dragons, so maybe they were stronger than most dragons his age. She thought, anyway. Either way, he was her dragon, and she wasn't about to push him too hard to fly if he wasn't good at first. Didn't it take several times for humans to learn to walk? She just thought he would catch on faster. She looked at the back of the green dragons head, and took a deep breath to steady herself. "I'm ready," she told herself, making sure she really was ready for the dragon to take off in flight.
