A stroll down memory lane
Many years in the past, two high school sweethearts fell in love. Soul mates, Erika DeValin and Stephan Hilden were destined to be together for the entirety of their lives. However, before their happily-ever-after, destiny would have to overcome a difficult obstacle. After their plans for engagement were announced to their friends and family, Erika’s parents were furious. A well known and very old family of mages and magic workers, the DeValin’s took pride in their ability to produce powerful offspring. For this reason, the family has a strict policy on the subject of marriage. Erika’s love however was strong and she was willing to do anything to stay by Stephan’s side. This included throwing away everything that connected her to her family. Name. Titles. Future. Freely released without the tiniest sense of regret. Together, they escaped, leaving everything of their past behind and settled down in a small village nestled in a secluded valley. It was here that their first born son was welcomed into the world. For fourteen years, they knew nothing but happiness. For fourteen years they held only one worry. And on the fourteenth year, that worry had come to be realized.
In those fourteen years, Erika and Stephan Phillips had seven children together. While they loved each and every one of their children, the parents were a little irresponsible when it came to raising them. Often, the two adults would leave unannounced for days at a time leaving their kids to fend for themselves. As a result, their eldest son, Ray, shouldered the responsibility of taking care of his younger sisters and brothers. Sometimes he would become irritated with his siblings. Other times with his parents. But in the end he loved his family and he would do what ever was asked of him to protect them. That vow was put to the test when he turned fourteen.
Their DeValin bloodline would not let them escape so easily. Inevitably, the magic users found their wayward kin and paid them an overdue visit. His parents were frightened, upset. They clung desperately to each other as if afraid they would be torn apart. Not knowing of his extended family, Ray didn‘t understand what was happening. Thinking fast, he ushered his younger siblings out of the house to play, not wanting them to pick up on the unbearable tension that now filled their living room. He watched as mother became distraught and his father began yelling at their unwanted guests. Finally, an ultimatum was given. Either Erika would have to return to her family or one of her children that showed the promise of magic would take her place. Before his mother was forced into a choice, Ray entered the room. He stood bravely in front of the family he never knew existed and said firmly that he would go in his mother’s place. Erika cried out in protest, claiming none of her children could work magic. To this, they just laughed. It was a preposterous claim they said, not with her blood flowing through their veins. Ray started argued with his parents, listing reasons why it would be better for him to go in her place. In the end, there wasn’t much of a choice. Ray was given a week to say his good byes. On the seventh day, they arrived and he left behind his home, his family, everything he ever knew. He was educated about his family history, their past, responsibilities they were to uphold. Soon after, he was enrolled into Dysmas Academy to nurture his budding potential as a mage. For the past two years he has dedicated himself to the study of magic in all its different forms and the control over his own power. While he misses his family, hopes every night that they are doing well, and wishes he was in the small house with them, he also finds magic to be fascinating and enjoys living in the academy.
That will never change:
Because he raised his own brothers and sisters from a young age, he matured quickly and has always found himself to be the responsible type. In a group, even when he is the youngest person there, he naturally falls into the leader’s mentality. Sometimes this has gotten him into trouble, but he can’t help his instinctive reaction when all of his siblings looked up to him for direction.

As a parting gift, he received an amulet from his mother. On it, she placed a charm of protection. Ray treasures the necklace and is never seen with out it. (Picture below.) When it was discovered that his Blood magic was affiliated with wind, the DeValin family gifted him with a stone figurine of a seagull. With it he is able to summon the spirit with in.
