Nova

"Still Moving Onward"

0 · 3,156 views · located in Nigerius lands

a character in “Elemental Battles”, as played by Krypt

Description

Nova was not particularly blessed to have a pelt that blended with his environment. Unlike his fellow pack members, Nova has a rather sandy colored pelt with a white belly, owing to not the best camouflage in frosty environments. In regards to stature, Nova is slightly smaller than the average wolf, and his ability to fight is reduced as such. He is remarkably agile however, the benefit for the trade off of strength, and often is able to outrun any terrestrial wolf.

Personality

Nova possesses a rather reserved personality, not out of coldness or shyness, he just doesn't like to hold a conversation in length. When he does speak, it is often tinged with satire, owing to conversations to often end quickly, to the relief of him and the conversing wolf. He is level headed and rational, and is rarely aggressive. After all, any fight he would pick he would likely lose, and thus he has no qualms about escaping with his life when his is fighting a losing battle.

Sharp Wit

History

Nova is a scout, or spy to those not of his pack, for the Ausi pack. Due to the packs rather remote location, they have elected to send him out first in order to judge enemy pack movements, what other wolves are up to, and the like. He is also in charge of mapping out any route of attack should the Ausi decide to go on the offensive, an act which they should yet to do. Obviously this would be valuable information to enemy packs, thus Nova keeps no maps or charts on him, just his head. Nova is content with his role, as he knows that he can exert a fair amount of power, without being of great stature.

In recent times, he has begun to look at the world with a biting pessimism that would make a cynic look happy. Constant hardships, a protracted adventure, and nostalgia for home has slowly contributed to his decaying outlook on the goodness of the world. Still he manages to keep his head, and though he does not have the Ausi nationalism that he once had, he still does not feel all that welcoming to strangers, whom so far has seemed to only lead him into trouble.

So begins...

The softness of the pine needles did nothing to comfort Nova's restless ears, as he could hear every groan, every plea, and every bark still emanating from that confounded cave. After a full days work yesterday, all his body asked for was a chance to sleep, and he was being denied that. Which, like any rational wolf would be, frustrated him. Listening to the sounds of the forest, he could hear that one wolf in particular peeled off from the pack. It was BattleDemon. Her gait was all to familiar by now. She was alone. He remembered his duty, the order he had been given. To exterminate all Alva. She was an Alva, was she not? But she was also his friend. Or was she? In the time that he had known her, he could hardly recall one kind remark that she made directed toward him. It was either an order, or a scolding. She probably though of him as dirt. She certainly fit the Alva stereotype of cold blooded anyway, so would the world actually be a little better off with her...exterminated? There was only one way to find out, yet once that choice was made, there was no going back.

Before he made his move, he would need more information and opportunity. Right now a strike wouldn't be such a bad time, she was alone, tired, and he would have the surprise. He could exterminate her and then continue away from this blasted cave and its makeshift pack forever. Maybe go finish his scouting run at the Vulcan Mountains, and finally return home. What a wondrous idea. Rolling out of his den, Nova crept to his feet and stole after BattleDemon, curious to see where she was going. Perhaps his problem could take care of itself, if he just gave it a little time.

It was almost as if she knew was being followed, Nova thought, watching BattleDemon scale the cliff. It wasn't that Nova was concerned with climbing, though heights did often spook him, it was the fact that one could not escape down them easily. Well, at least with one's life in tact, that is. He knew there was probably a gentler slope on the other side, and as he was about to start around to make sure of it, he looked up to see BattleDemon. And she was entering the house. From what Cerise had more or less told him about humans, that was practically suicide. Did that absolve Nova of his responsibility? Though she had made him angry earlier, that did not mean he was bloodthirsty, and had to be the one to exterminate her. He was perfectly fine with letting someone else do the job. In fact, it would ease his conscience of any smidgen of guilt he would of had trying to attack her himself. Besides, whether or not she survived, no one could doubt his testimony that he had watched her walk to her own death. He was finally free!

Not wanting to stay a minute longer than he had to around this eerie location, Nova began backtracking his journey. His guard was lowered somewhat, as his mood was elated, and he didn't have to worry any longer about being seen. It was the dawn of a new day, and Nova decided to walk out of the cover of trees so that he could look up at the wonders of the glorious morning.

As Nova continued his gaze at the pinkening clouds of the early morning, he was rewarded by the sight of a wolf swooping down to meet him. He had only one guess of who it was, and frankly, Nova was in a cheerful enough mood not to really care. "Just out for a walk. Have you ever seen a more beautiful sunrise? Maybe you should draw this moment into your sketchpad, immortalizing it in the strokes of you pencil." Nova suggested cheerily, walking past her with the intention that she would follow him. Normally, even mentioning that statement would have automatically come across as sappy, yet even now, he meant it sincerely. He wondered what he would do next. He had been planning on going to the Vulcan Mountains to finish his mental map, but now that the prospects of returning home were so near, he couldn't help but be excited. He couldn't wait to see what changes had occurred, maybe even those Dimitrios had put up great fortifications of stone. What a sight that would be, great grey pillars shimmering in the morning. But what sight wasn't magnificent, in the glory of the morning sun?

"No I haven't and that's a great idea. Thanks!" She says cheerily as well. Nova's in such a good mood today. She thinks. Out of all of her friends, Nova had to be the best. Even though they never really talked that often, and the argument they had wasn't very pretty, though she forgot about those things and instead replaced them in the times they did socialize. He was always nice and polite in conversations and he respected who she was as did she with him. "You know, I saw a fox today. Do you think that's a sign maybe the wars will be over soon? Although it was heading towards his den and the birds and other animals are unusually quiet today..." She say us while turning around and following him. Looking at the trees, there were barely any birds out and the mockingbird songs were very quiet today. This was indeed going to be a long goodbye; nevertheless, she decides to tell him at the very end of their conversation. "I thought I might tell you because a fox reminds me of Ausi's. How sharp, witty, and clever they are." She adds.

Nova took her lovely compliment for what it was worth, and he was pleased with the sincerity in which she had spoken it, without a hint of being saccharine. He thanked her accordingly, and a nudging in the back of his mind wondered how far he had come from the human's den by now. He was concerned with putting as much forest as he could between that den and him as possible. Nova especially took note of the quietness of the birds, and a familiar adage his uncle has said came to mind, about how it is always the most silent before the storm. Perhaps Nova was being paranoid, but the forest did seem more quiet than usual. Instead of worrying Cerise, he just decided to agree with her comment about the war possibly ending. He wondered what he would do when it was all over. Be a fisherwolf, like many in his pack? There was certain romanticism the correlated with fishing, especially if the Ausi's manage to capture a warm water port before the war is through. He would be out there braving the winds and currents on nothing more than a raft, using his great net to haul in the masses of the fish, surviving on, how did Cerise put it, his sharpness, wittiness, and cleverness alone. That would be wonderful. Since he was thinking about it, he asked Cerise on what she was planning to do with her future, he being ever curious.

Cerise hesitated. What was she going to do with her future? "Well... I guess I would... probably become an artist, or a doctor." She says. When she was little, her step-father had praised on how good she was with healing and picking out what kinds of herbs to use on different types of wounds, then again, she didn't really want to deal with blood and sickness in her life too much since, well, she had already seen a lot already. "So..." She says trying to thing of another interesting subject. "Could you... By any chance tell me about your life...? You know, from past to present?" She asks curiously. She wanted to know mostly about his friends and family and the upsides and accomplishments in his life, though she decided to make it a little more open.

"Well, I don't suppose there is anything particularly special about my history, no dark secrets or prophesies or any of that." Nova began, warning her. He decided there was nothing wrong with taking some time for a decent conversation with Cerise, so he might as well give her what she desired. "My father as you know is Denalias, a warrior wolf he is, and I have no siblings except for a sister. My friends area all around my age, Nero, Temaris, and others, and in our younger days we enjoyed playing in icy grottoes, sledding down powdery slopes, and like any group of young wolves, we like to make mischief. I planned to go into the fishing trade, but then the war took a turn for the worse...I'm sure you remember that time...but anyway, it was then expected that all fit males sign up to help the war effort, and any others that wanted to. So naturally, I answered the call and became a cartographer, as Ausi maps were fairly outdated. After a few months training and some well wishes from my family, I set off for the rest of Nigerius. A few months into my journey, I stumbled across a rather clumsy Avira wolf who managed to get herself tied up in a tree. After begging and begging for help, I finally decided to help the poor creature out. After all, I couldn't just leave her there, someone needed to tell her wolves don't belong in trees." Nova narrated, checking her face every now and then for interest. He had planned on just making it a brief history, he doubted she was that interested in the whole of his life.

She began to chuckle and playfully nudged him with her paw. "I didn't tie myself up there..." She chuckled. "And Avira actually live in tress." She says before looking at a fairly large maple. "Nothing like this though." She says with an unimpressed look. "If you go to Era, those trees wood look like tooth picks." She says. "Also, I didn't beg...that much." She says, sitting down and looking on the ground; though, she still had her playful grin on her face like always.

"Never said it was you" Nova mentioned, cracking a smile. The morning was full, and the dew on the grass was starting to dry up back into the sky. He wondered what it was like up there in the sky, among the clouds. It must be quite and experience to fly, though Nova would rather not. He did not have too much of a head for high places. He began to shuffle his feet, he longed to get on the move again. At this rate, he wouldn't start his journey again until lunch.

Cerise looked at him and smiled. She could see the urgency in his eyes and chuckled. "Come on..." She said playfully before getting up and walking along. She walked along and looked back at him. "You know. You, out of all wolves, are probably the best friend I've ever had..." She says warmly and nibbling his ear in a friendly manner.

Naturally, Nova was grateful for her wondrous compliment, but he struggled to say that she was likewise to him. After all, he had plenty of good friends at home, all of them he had known much longer than the week he had known Cerise. In addition, years of prejudice and propaganda towards the brutality of the other wolf packs was hard to undo in just a week. Nevertheless, Cerise was in fact a good friend, and he gave her a nod at her statement, letting her resume her gesture.

She stopped and looked forward and sighs. "They all thought that I was... different..." She says suddenly in an emotionless tone and expression. She looked down and sighs. "Never mind..." She says finally before returning to her walk. She looks at the sky; the sun was shining brighter than ever. "Weird... I've never seen the sun shine so brightly... Well not on the ground anyway." She says.

"Aye, the ground has all sorts of wonders that you cannot see from the air." Nova commented, looking up at the sun. This of course hurt his eyes, so he looked back down with sunspots blurring his vision. Blinking his eyes, he decided this would be a nice time to make a strategic retreat. "Well Cerise, I shouldn't keep you any longer. May the wind be beneath your wings on your flight, good luck, and good bye." he said, cheerily. He knew she was probably aware that he was leaving for good this time, and the seriousness of his farewell should have alluded to that if she did not understand. Nova walked backward a few steps to motion his departure, stopping when his backside hit a tree.

Kicking a rock that happened along his path, Nova the Ausi kept his eyes ahead and his ears open, drinking in every detail of the surrounding landscape. Although he did love serving his pack, nationalism and patriotic fervor were the causes of that, scouting was also something he did for himself. It was a way for him to see the world, discover new thrills, and a chance to prove to others what an intrepid adventurer he was. After all, there wasn't always going to be a war, and sharing Cerise's earlier optimism, Nova hoped that the war would end in his lifetime, preferably when he was still in his prime. Maybe the Ausi's could sue for peace on their own and remain neutral, and perhaps just peacefully sit out the war. Nova was surprised at himself for thinking such thoughts, a week ago the military tradition that had been drilled into him prevented such liberal thoughts, but Nova discovered that there was other ways to live, that there was still good in this world.

Judging by the surrounding landscape, and from the old maps he had studied before his great trek, Nova estimated he would reach the foothills of the Vulcan Mountains by nightfall. If he was quick, he could be sleeping in his own home in just over a fortnight. Wouldn't that be something. Correcting himself from thinking to far into the vast, uncertain future, Nova instead focused on the present. He looked to the trees up above, the rough terrain below, and the flora and fauna abound, as he kicked yet another rock and watched it fly.

Nova felt a chill in the air, and was enlightened to discover that a steady gale was beginning to descend on the valley in which he was trekking. The sudden frostiness of the air did not bother the Ausi wolf, though the possible implications did. A storm was brewing, North by Northwest of his position he judged by the remaining of the sun he saw, and Nova remembered what happened last time he was caught out in bad weather. But he had no where to take shelter, at least, he had not discovered any yet. He continued on, hoping that he would be able to seek refuge before the storm began to rage upon him.

Nova came to a river, and careless from want of drink, he walked straight into the clearing that it inhabited in order to sate his thirst. After looking up from his drink, he was astonished to realize that he had come rather close to running into a fellow wolf who had stopped at this river as well, who was no more than fifty meters from him. He had by no doubt noticed Nova by now, and Nova took this moment to asses him. He was a Kamarian, a sturdily built one at that. With dark black fur intermixed with an occasional streak of red, he was quite an intimidating looking fellow, especially considering he was somewhat larger than Nova. Wiping his mouth was his paw, Nova stopped to watch the Kamarian, waiting to see if the black wolf would let him leave in peace. No use getting himself stabbed in the back while he walked away.

Mydnyte raised his head and saw an Ausi wolf fifty meters from where he had been drinking. At leas the thought it was an Ausi wolf, his eyes seemed to a reserved look as if waiting for him. That was a trait Mydnyte knew Ausi wolves had in common, but this one was wearing a sandy brown pelt. There was one type of wolf though he knew came from the deserts of their world and he could be one of them. He decided to ask it a few questions.

"What are you doing so far from home?" he asked nonchalantly looking into the wolf's eyes. "Are you from a place like the Sharikere Mountains or the desert? You seem to be Ausi or this one other type of wolf I cannot remember off the top of my head. Neither should be in this area though."

Nova did not feel like this was the time to be having conversation with a stranger, but he supposed talking was better than fighting. Especially when it was a fight Nova knew he would lose if tooth did come to claw. "I hail from the Sharikeres, for I am an Ausi." Nova started, explaining his allegiance to this wolf. He could see the obvious confusion in this wolf's eyes, and Nova was used to explaining that he was still from the pack of ice regardless of the color of his pelt. The unique color of his fur was supposedly passed down from his mothers side, where a recent relative mated with another out of Ausi bloodline. It was nothing more than an aesthetic difference that separated Nova from the other Ausi's, though it has been said that he has been able to handle heat a little better than some of his brethren. Nevertheless, his brown pelt did him service in the lands outside of the snow, for it was much easier to blend in with brown fur than it was with snow white.

"Though I could as the same of you. Why are you out here?" Nova asked boldly, reflecting the Kamarian's question back at him. Meanwhile Nova silently wondered if he should just use his cartographer excuse with this wolf as well, it had worked well enough on Cerise.

"I'm here to take land for myself. Is this stream claimed?" Mydnyte stated in response to Nova's question. The wolf was staring at him or had been staring at him quite some time now and his bold way of speaking off put Mydnyte in a slightly bad mood. "If you have claim over it I might just end up taking it from you. I just got out of a fight with another group of wolves and one paralyzed me, but I've managed to leave while they're all gone, so now I'm here."

"That means I'm quite resourceful." Mydnyte showed his canines to Nova expecting to quickly gain dominance if it came to a fight.

"By all means, it doesn't matter to me if you claim this land. I was just passing through. Though I do recommend you find a place with a bit more shelter, unless you don't mind a little lightning." Nova stated, adding a bit of advise at the end for whatever reason. Perhaps he was just trying to pacify this Kamarian, from what he had heard they tended to be aggressive. It was strange seeing him out alone though, it seemed that the age of loners claiming land to rough nature by themselves had passed, instead replaced by the great centralized packs the reigned in Nigerius. Perhaps Nova could claim a little bit of land for himself one of these days. It would be up in the mountains, away from the pesky wolves of society, with a lake with all the fish he could catch. Though he didn't know what he would do with them. He liked catching fish, it was a fun sport, but he didn't really care for eating them. It was an odd paradox he was in.

Nova, refusing to humble himself an inch to Mynyte's implied threat, decided it was high time to leave the stream and find a place to wait out the coming storm.

Nova had been tracing his path along the stream when he began to feel the first drops of rain, and one particular drop hit him on the nose, causing him to sneeze. Looking up, he could see the preliminary rainclouds that were on the fringes of the storm system, and each sporadic raindrop seemed to be a messenger of the great host that was soon going to descend upon him. He had not reached the foothills of the Vulcan Mountains yet, so the earth was still relatively flat. Looking around for adequate shelter, Nova saw none, and continued his pace. He would be walking in mud soon. His ears pricked up at the sound of a howl somewhere behind him, and though it was not immediately apparent who it was, it sounded somewhat like BattleDemon's.

Whether or not it was actually her's, Nova couldn't help but wonder about the Alva wolf. Had she bested the human? Well, at least there was one less strange creature in these woods, and no one could blame Nova for not trying. Had the human bested her? Well, as Nero had more or less put it, he had ridden the world of one more arrogant, genocidal, plague of a wolf. It was rather harsh, considering he knew BattleDemon, but remembering how she had invaded Nova's thought made Nero sound more right than wrong. Being hit by another raindrop, Nova continued walking, his paw getting a little more stuck in the developing mud with every step.
