8-Bit…8-Bit…8-Bit…!
What if I just mixed things up a bit?
I picked one fine time to move to this city eh?
Out of all the times I could have moved here, I pick the one time when everything and everyone is going bat shit crazy to settle down.
Well, let me pause there. I doubt you want to hear the ramblings of someone who hasn’t even introduced themselves right?
Right.
So allow me to introduce myself, I am Demetri Maverick. A shopkeeper, I sell a variety of things, ranging from the mundane, to the supernatural. But that’s another story for another time. You’ve come to me to learn just what’s going on here in this city right? And that’s just what I will convey.
It started just about the day I moved here, December 31st, 2009. The Dimensional Equilibrium around 8-Bit started to fluctuate, meaning, in simpler terms, 8-Bit was getting ready to undergo a change.
Originally, every place in the world has it’s own Dimensional Equilibrium. Whether it be a small island, or a giant mountain like Everest. This keeps our dimension, our world, away from crossing with others like the astral dimension, which holds your ghosts and ghouls. Normally though, every so often, the Equilibrium will tend to fluctuate, which will explain your ‘ghost sightings’. You dig?
So, basically, I didn’t pay much mind to it all when 8-Bit’s started shift, it’s a normal thing, happens a lot when new people settle down in new towns and such.
Who am I to know all of this? Well…I guess you can say I’m a kind of…Gatekeeper.
I make sure the different dimensions and planes are all in order, it’s a tiring job, but someone has to do it. I don’t like talking about my work though; just the thought of it can turn troublesome.
Back to the matter at hand, remember when I said 8-Bit’s Equilibrium began to fluctuate? Well, it didn’t stop. Normally, these little instances are just that, instances. They only last for about a week at the longest. This one, kept on going, it’s March now, and the fluctuations are only getting more and more erratic.
For now…the townspeople are oblivious to the shifts. Normal people can’t perceive things foreign to their dimension, they only see the damage those things cause.
For example, the other day, I stumbled upon a T-Rex the size of a small skyscraper. I handled it no problem (Gatekeepers have dangerous jobs, as such, we’re granted abilities to match with whatever baddies we may encounter), however it’s footsteps left some pretty unsightly craters in the street.
The people of 8-Bit all see situations like this as ‘unexplained phenomena’, and they’re the talk of the town these days. For now they’re nothing but interesting little rumors, but I fear for when things escalate.
I need to get to the bottom of all of this before things get worse, today a T-Rex, tomorrow could be some death machine.
It’s all so damn troublesome…

Mood Music 4: Those Who Fight Further
The erratic movements of the rift have caused strange changes within the city of 8-Bit.It looks like slowly but surely, a small group of people within 8-Bit are gaining awareness of the ‘unexplained phenomena’s causes. Not only that, but they’re also gaining Gatekeeper-like abilities, but with an serious change; the way their moves grow and evolve are similar to a video game. The only way they can increase the power of their skills is to ‘level up’. These individuals level up by gaining experience points, I guess through battle?
I’ve even gained possession of a few items which ‘power-up’ my own abilities, my guess is their also a result of the Equilibrium’s situation and do the same for the individuals who have gained these abilities.
Regardless, I can’t let these people divulge these abilities that they’ve gained, if they did that, they could seriously screw up the nature of this world.

Aemyle lowered her gun and eyed him suspiciously. He was dressed in a similar way to Alistair, so he was probably telling the truth. He spoke as if nervous, though he didn’t seem that put off by her aiming her weapon. Aside from that, what was that -sama he put onto Demetri’s name?
“I am not sure what you mean when you say ‘putting up your dukes’, but I do intend on following my companions into battle.” She looked towards the rift. If it was anything like the previous gate, the dizziness might return. If it put her on the battlefield and she fainted again… “I swore my loyalty to them,” She would follow regardless, and she would simply keep herself from falling this time.
“Thank you for your guidance, Styx, sir,” She smiled and acted as if she would move forward before curiosity overtook her, “Pardon me, but may I ask why you put -sama onto Mr.Maverick’s name? It is Japanese if I recall correctly,”

"Charlotte," She muttered, this being the second time that the shapeshifter had helped her in a tight situation.
Nym stumbled again as Charlotte pushed her back, almost tripping up on something hard in the sand. She glanced down to see something angular and metal,
"Nym, pick it up! Help the wolf finish the other wolf off!" Morris shouted over all the noise.
Nym quickly obeyed, grabbing at the metal object, shaking most of the sand from it. Looking at it, she could see that it was like a boomerang in shape, the tips sharpened to a point, one edge sharper than the other. Two gaps were cut out nearer the middle, and in the very center it looked like there was a joint, as if the boomerang folded in half. It looked so strange, but so cool at the same time. It reminded her of Hope from Final Fantasy, he used a weapon like this. He was much like her. Perhaps this was the way to go then.
"Nym, throw it!" Morris cried again.
She looked up at the circling wolves, raising the newly found weapon, glancing between the two to distinguish which was the attacking wolf and which was Charlotte.
"Please don't hit Charlotte," She pleaded under her breath before throwing the new found weapon, putting all the force she could behind it. The bladed weapon sliced through the air with ease, striking true in the side of the wolf, so deep that the wolf toppled over almost instantly.
"Oh my god, I killed a wolf." Nym said, hands clapped over her mouth in shock. She'd never killed anything before, and she just murdered a wolf.
"Nym, get the boomerang! This isn't over yet." Morris told her next, the mini-chimera's words like barked orders. She once again followed what he said, rushing over to the dead wolf to pull the weapon from it's side, grimacing at the blood that stained it. "I guess this saved Charlotte having to tussle with this one."

She looked at Nym, panting, and saw the movement of the little Chimera Morris. Her eyes flicked to the shrunken beast, and he smiled at Nym & said, "Nicely done, You have quite an good throw." Morris glanced at Charlotte and blinked, standing up a bit taller. "You too, uh- wolfy..." Obviously he didn't know who she was. Shurgging off being called "wolfy," she looked to her wound, still fresh with blood dripping into her fur. The pain had mostly gone away.
Charlotte was growing tired, despite her will not to. She hadn't ever been shifted this long, nor ever actually fought this hard. When she had fought Larger Morris, only once swipe at his neck had thrown her off and she'd stayed there. Even though, she was determined to finish what she had started.
She turned and looked around, watching the others with their own battles. The skeleton was closing in right before she noticed it out of the corner of her eye. Charlotte flipped and bared her fangs. The skeleton ran at her, flinging a sharpened bone around with all its might.
Skeleton... skeleton...where should I target... Charlotte only just noticed there was no jugular when she jumped for its neck. Wait a second- what the hell??!!!

“I am not sure what you mean when you say ‘putting up your dukes’, but I do intend on following my companions into battle.” She seemed cautious to enter the rift he had created, despite the urgency. He wondered if she was hesitating because of a fear of the nausea taking a hold of her again. “I swore my loyalty to them,” Whatever nerves the girl had, she shook off now speaking with a certain resolve.
“Really now..? Loyalty hmm.” Styx seemed to be mulling over the word in his mind when she turned to thank him.
“Thank you for your guidance, Styx, sir,” She smiled and acted as if she would move forward before curiosity overtook her, “Pardon me, but may I ask why you put -sama onto Mr.Maverick’s name? It is Japanese if I recall correctly,”
Still in his Indian-style sitting on the glass, Styx grimaced at the question. It threw off his entire aloof visage for an instant, but he quickly regained his former composure, returning to that dull air of his. He turned his head to the side, and tilted it up to get a good look at her. “Well…he, it’s complicated really.” The suited man’s countenance was thoughtful; as if he was still pondering the very question he was answering, “Demetri-Sama gave me purpose, and for that, I’m in his debt, I respect him.” Styx shut his eyes and faced forward again, looking away from Aemyle.
“That’s the long and short of it, now you better get to helping out your pals.” It was obvious he wasn’t willing to speak on the matter anymore; almost as obvious as the fact that he was holding something back.

In the Fray!
Brave watched with an animalistic hunger as an army of…zombies? Appeared before him. He licked his lips, and brought his wolf’s blood soaked blade to his mouth, licking the blunt end clean. He leaned into his fighting stance, casually and playfully juggling the cutlass between hands, he cackled with excitement.
“That way eh..? What a coincidence, that’s the same direction I wanted to go!” Reversing his grip of the blade in his right hand to a downward position, Brave took off into the thick of the zombie’s crowd. He was hardheaded, well skilled, and viscous, a dangerous combination—and to top it off, he had an intelligence quotient of 26.
The rotting corpses swung their weapons at him with an amazing force, but they were slow, and the pirate was much, much faster. In the middle of a thick cluster of six, Brave sliced through one in front of him which wielded a spear. Just as the zombie’s weapon fell from mid air, he grabbed it, abandoning the cutlass for the moment, and twirling the thing foolishly about.
From his position, doing a much more ‘civil’ battle with two skeletons, He peeked from the corner of his eyes to see his ‘friend’s thick-headed behavior, “That idiot…he’s going to…”
At that exact moment, not only did Brave manage to slice and dice the five zombies around him, he also succeeded in cutting his own self—extremely deep. Just as the pirate came to this realization (he didn’t mind much, it didn’t seem to hurt him), his body reverted to the mass of stars and glitz he appeared with before, and returned, instantly to Jayx’s side, away from the fray.
“Brave! Are you okay?”
“You need to be more careful! You could have gotten hurt! Where’s the cut?”
It looked like Kid and Karen had also materialized next to Jayx, acting as a medic for whoever got injured in the battle. The pirate, who was now sitting confuzzled on the ground, looked up at them with a confused eye (eye because the other was covered with an eye patch xP).
“Eh…looks like it was nothin’!” He chuckled, indeed, the extremely deep cut he once had was completely gone. Like it never existed in the first place. Jayx, Karen, and Kid all huddled around him as he pointed to where the injury was supposed to be.
“Whoa….it’s like magic!” Jayx clapped, amused by the occurrence, Kid followed doing the same, while Karen looked more concerned. Brave leapt up, rotating his arms, ready to hop back into the fight.
“I’ve wasted enough time! Haw! I’ll have to cut down 1000 more to make up for it!” He pounded his fist against his chest, ready to charge back. He gripped his cutlass, which was also, oddly enough, right back on his side.

Though she was panting and relaxing, Charlotte was also watching and waiting, listening to screams and growls. The wolves seemed to be growing less bold in attacking, while zombies and skeletons increased in number. Where were they coming from, holding sharp blades and ready for battle?
Something was wrong. She could smell it in the hot, bloody air. These other human fighters- she'd seem them before. They were all students walking the halls at Atari High. She didn't bother to count them, but she knew there were at least three. There was a girl watching...Charlotte followed her gaze- a boy had collapsed to his knees, arms holding his chest. He looked pained, but she couldn't see any blood or even a scratch on him. She also noticed that slowly, slowly, the zombies were disappearing under the earth of the Colliseum.
An assumption was made in Charlotte's mind- This highschool boy is making the dead come back up. But you know what the always say about assuming: It makes an ass out of you and me. (( ass u me ))
The shifter girl thought about going to help him- actually, go see what's wrong, then help him by putting him out of his misery. (( XD )) She thought these human thoughts and the consequence was...
Charlotte was human again- fully.

Knowing he'd only get one shot, he prayed that Joel could at least talk down or otherwise handle the shifter--who had demorphed, thankfully--while he attempted to deal with the last standing threat. The others would be up soon, at least on the foe's side--and the crowd's bloodthirst would likely empty new foes onto the field.
Wait a minute--that was it! If Valor could just stall time long enough for the next round to begin, they would have no choice to at least try to work together--and then Valor could stab Jayx in the back (hopefully literally) with the first available opportunity. Focusing, he gave one last cry out, but this was clearly aimed at everyone, friend and foe alike.
"Guys, get ready... The wolves were just the first round, they'll be sending more, quickly!"
And with that, time seemed to slow to a crawl. At least until whoever was in charge decided that their impatience supplanted their curiosity.

As the creature fell onto it’s back, it writhed in pain, letting out a horrifying scream before it’s entire body reduced to ash. Xavier grimaced--- regardless of what it had become now, that thing was once a human. He couldn’t help but feel some remorse for what it had become now, a tool forced to do some whom he doubt valued its help much. The senior sighed, what was he getting all sentimental about? It was trying to kill him now, and he had dealt with it…
“There’s still way too many to deal with…” His eyes narrowed as they darted towards the middle off all the otherworldly monsters, in the middle of it all, there was one student, calmly chanting an incantation. It was Joel. A technique like this…the rumors about him at school were true? “Dammit…so you really are against us?” Xavier clinched his fists, causing them to erupt with their respective elements.

Preston was trying his best to stay out of everyone’s way. He managed to find an old rusted broadsword among the remains of the enemy’s undead servants, however, he hadn’t the foggiest on how to use it effectively, and besides, all he could do was heal; he wasn’t a fighter. I should just stay with Jayx and her friends…I can be of more use there… The blonde haired boy thought, frantically. His eyes darted about, trying to find the girl and her strange allies, but he couldn’t catch her in the midst of all of the chaos on the battle field.
Graaaaawgh!
Preston screamed, behind him, a single mace-wielding zombie limped after him, eager to sink all of its three teeth into the freshman. It flailed the weapon about wildly, and it was so close to Preston that he could hear the sound of it cutting the wind. The boy’s heart raced as he forced his legs to go so fast he thought that they were going to fly from his body.
“Sh-shi-shit!” Preston yelped. He tripped. Over a pebble. A stupid, insignificant pebble. As he impacted against the dirt, his scavenged blade fell from his hand a scuttled across the field. He was scared.
Grrrrrraaaaaugh!
He watched as the shadow of his pursuer cast over him, and flipped himself over to get a glimpse of his attacker—before it’s weapon pounded his skull in.
But then, to his surprise…the creature stopped. It dropped it’s weapon, and let out a ghastly wail, before it suddenly sunk deep into the grounds from which it came. Preston, still shaking from the ordeal, let out a relieved breath and let his body fall limp as he spread himself out across the warm dirt ground.
What do we have hear folks? Did the necromancer lose control over his undead horde? He’s collapsed! Unable to battle anymore!
The crowd gasped at the collapse of another one of the warrior’s, he was still conscious, but he was no doubt done for the day.
Yet another one left unable to continue! It looks like our first group is just about finished here! The girl hasn’t made a move yet..and what…can….the lone….

Xavier listened, confused as the announcer Icarus’ speech became slowed, he watched as the members of the crowd slowed in their heckling and throwing of food—this sensation was all too familiar, though much less through. Time was moving at a crawl, rather than completely stopped like the night before in the Shopping District.
"Guys, get ready... The wolves were just the first round, they'll be sending more, quickly!"
One of the opposite group called out, Xavier didn’t notice the kid, but he must have been from Atari. Was this time-slow his doing? Only more evidence supporting their allying with the ‘bad-guy’. It didn’t seem like this one wanted a fight—something told Xavier to still be cautious though. Granted, a fight at this point, with two of their fighters incapacitated and the other not keen on fighting, was foolish—could this supposed truce be a ploy?
There wasn’t much to it though; those gates were opening, and whatever was behind them looked to be a lot more than just a few wolves.
“Yo…” Xavier closed in on him ((Valor)), “You’re teams done for the day…but we’re still not out of the woods, let’s help each other out. We just got here, so we're still fresh; but you all look beat.” He relieved his left hand from its grip around his right bicep, and held out his hand to Valor. “Just for now alright?” Xavier nodded towards the pair of bloodthirsty looking red eyes inside the darkness of the monster’s gate. It didn't matter whether or not they were truly enemies at this point, if they wanted to live, they needed to team up.
((Can't believe I've been leaving Preston out the action! And thanks Logan! I appreciate it.))

She stopped him from moving and rubbed his shoulder in what she prayed was a comforting manner before facing the girl again. "Who...are you guys? Just...stay away, okay?" she ordered and questioned. This was not good...Not good at all. The wolves were gone, it seemed...but another round? And all these others? She grimaced and brought her fist up weakly. She wasn't a fighter like the rest of them...but she wasn't going to lay down and die!
She still had a promise to keep. No matter what...

"Morris..." She glanced at the mini-chimera, looking to him for more help. He seemed to know alot more about fighting than she did, but even he did not seem to be able to give her an answer.
The pair watched with sudden curiousity as the undead soldiers fell back to their sandy grave, putting Nym's mind at ease enough to slow her breathing back to its normal rate. "That's a relief..." She sighed, almost tempted to drop her weapon, though Morris told her not to. No doubt this was just the beginning for them. She gazed around the arena, blocking out the noise of the crowd as she checked on all of the people in the group. She could see Xavier approaching on of the ones that Styx had said to be their opponents, the other two opponents huddled together; not remembering seeing the girl actually do anything in battle.
She saw Charlotte in her human form, still wounded from where she'd protected her from the wolf - a wave of guilt hitting her. If she hadn't been so incompetant, then her new found friend wouldn't be hurt right now. Nym remembered one of the others mentioning that they had a healing ability, finding Preston sprawled out on the ground. Suddenly she was rushing towards the fellow blonde freshman, almost stumbling as she came close to him.
"Preston, are you alright?" She asked as she got close enough to not have to shout.
"You better not get comfortable, kid. I doubt this is the end just yet." Morris commented, though Nym didn't want to worry about that right now, looking down at Preston with a concerned gaze.
"Charlotte's hurt, Preston." She told him, her voice shaking slightly as the wave of guilt returned. "Can you help her, incase more come?" She hoped he could help. With her words, she offered him a small hand to help him back to his feet.

As his body laid there, lifeless, his mind reflected the opposite condition. His thoughts swarmed with far too many questions. What happened? Why did my undead army collapse? Why did I become so weak? Who were those people? And Naydelle?.....Naydelle. That very name brought a spark of joy to his thoughts, but dimmed by the reminder of her current state. She was all alone with no means of protecting herself. Is she ok? What if something happens to her? "I have won,... stopped the being from killing the princess and--" I faint...

Only to be snapped awake and scrambling to her feet, poised to run, shift, something. The arena's sandy dust had cleared. All the human particiapants had stopped. No skeletons, no zombies, no wolves- at least, they were all dead. But now Charlotte's weary eyes were focused on the entrance she guessed the wolves had come out of. A new set of eyes were manifesting. She couldn't keep focus much longer. Everything was swimming. She leaned sideways, tried to steady herself, and fell over.
Charlotte caught a glimpse of the pool of hot, red, sticky blood all around her. Where'd it come from? So much blood...No one could survive that loss. She groaned. Her side hurt. She put her hand on it. Wet. With an effort, she looked down to find her hand coated in a crimson red, a sickening gash running from just below her shoulder to the top of her thigh. Charlotte let her head fall back, roll to the side, still trying t hold onto conciousness.
All she saw was...All I see is... Pitch black, lights out.

“Well…he, it’s complicated really. Demetri-Sama gave me purpose, and for that, I’m in his debt, I respect him.” His eyes shut, and he face forward and away from Aemyle. “That’s the long and short of it, now you better get to helping out your pals.”
“I would appear I have tread on an unwelcome subject,” Aemyle spoke in an apologetic tone, “My thanks to you once more. May you find joy in the purpose you have found,”
She faced the portal and braced herself to pass through, “And may the mercy of Adonai be with me on my own journey,” She muttered, gun in hand, before stepping into the portal. Soon, a sandy surface solidified under her feet and the visage of a coliseum floor filled her vision. The dizziness set in not long after, though she was able to maintain a standing position through it this time. Perhaps travel through these portals would get easier over time.
As the dizziness cleared from her vision, she began to take stock of her surroundings. Her friends were, for the most part, alive. Charlotte had a dishearteningly bad wound. Those she did not recognize were down one in number, and that one had a young girl standing over him as if to protect him. Xavier was offering his hand to yet another young man. Who were these kids, and why did they seem to oppose her friends?
The most disturbing aspect of this scene was a set of large doors opening on the other side of the area. Behind them was a set of hostile red eyes, which did not bode well for the team.
“Xavier!” She called out, running towards the young man who’d put himself in a sort of leadership over the group, “I apologize for my tardiness.” She turned to the young man Xavier was holding his hand out to, “And I do hope you are not an enemy, from the appearance of this creature, we would do well to give each other aide.”

Xavier retracted his hand, as the boy ((Valor)) seemed hesitant to grab it, instead, he set his attention towards the gigantic doors ahead. The kid’ s spell was holding for now, but it wouldn’t last much longer, they had to lick their wounds. With a grim expression on his face, the senior took inventory of their numbers. They were high, but not many of them were even fit to fight. Naydelle, one of the girls from his homeroom, was huddled over an wounded Joel, trying to bring him to his feet.
Charlotte was almost down for the count, he saw Jayx and her medical crew rushing over to help, he hoped they could do her good: Preston alone might not have been enough. Speaking of the blondie, he saw Nym rush over to the floored fellow freshmen, good thing, he figured they both might have been pretty shaken. His own gang seemed a lot more functional than the other group: though they were still down a fighter…where was Aemyle?

“Are you alright Preston?” A voice called out to him, it was Nym. She has a ghastly look on her face, was the battle still going on? Preston hadn’t heard any noises indicating a clash for a while now, if this was true, then why did she look so worried? The girl’s next words indicated why she was so worried, “Charlotte’s hurt Preston, can you help?” That’s right, he was the party’s healer. Jayx and her friends could help, but they weren’t as good as he was. Nym held her hand out to him, gingerly he grabbed it, and with her aid rose to his feet.
“Charlotte?” He asked, dusting himself off. From inside the girl’s bag, a small furry limb pointed a ways across the arena, there he saw her. Bloody, in terrible condition. Preston felt his heart sink at the sight: there wasn’t time to waste. “Nym, let’s hurry.” He said to her as he sprinted for her.

Jayx, Kid, and Karen huddled around the bleeding junior, while Brave and Him leaned against either side of Charlotte, kind of like protection, should any of the hostiles try and use a sneak attack. Their fingertips pressed against different areas of the girl’s wounds illuminated with a soft green light.
“Any progress?” He asked, visibly concerned for Charlotte, he hated seeing any child injured, especially ones close to Jayx. The grimace on the trio’s faces was more than enough of an answer. “Where’s that boy? The Paladin. He should be helping…doesn’t he know his comrades are in trouble?” He spoke his words with a disgusted tone, snarling at the boy’s cowardice. Brave however simply scanned the Coliseum with his one eye, surveying it all. It was only when two figured, approaching the huddle with a frantic speed did he speak up, with a proud grin.
“Aye, looks like there’s hope for the lad yet.”
Preston and Nym arrived just in time to aid the shapeshifter.

“Xavier!”
The young man heard a voice from behind him, his first thought was ‘What now?’. But as he turned to see who the individual was, it was probably the best thing that came the group’s way all day, the cavalry, or at least back-up. As Aemyle closed in on him he gave her a small wave and a smile, crossing his arms as she stopped in front of him.
“I apologize for my tardiness.” She said in a way that made him chuckle a bit, she was a character. At the apology he shook his head and replied:
“Ah, no need, I’m just glad you’re feeling alright.” He grinned, “ ‘Sides…that’s the least of our worries. We’ve got some breathing room now but…” Xavier nodded towards the condition of some of the fighters, “It’s pretty bad. We still don’t know about these other kids either…” He bit his lip, thinking again about what Joel and Naydelle were up to being here. “And then, there’s that…” Xavier turned his entire body to face the doorway behind them all, in the front of the Coliseum. He clinched his right fist in a manner that caused bits of flame to emit from it. “Sheesh, what a Monday…” Part of him wondered if Demetri was just screwing with them all…
"Hey, I'm Rio Green from Atari High. I have no clue what is going on here but i do know that we are going to need as many of us as we can get to get through this next round. You can create fire and ice am I correct?" One of the members of the other team strolled over to them, he looked rather beat up himself, but he still remained calm, it was a good thing to have in a fight, Xavier thought.
“Hm?” The man’s question was posed to him of course, he wondered what relevance that had to the situation now, maybe he was as strategist or something, “Yeah. What’s up? You’ve got a combination in mind?” Xavier replied, curious as to what ‘Rio’ had to say.
