Sarah Gorman

"You left me behind. No one leaves me behind."

a character in “Heroes and Villains: A New Threat”, as played by LSunday

Description

Hero/Villain Name: Phaseshift
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Appearance: Image
Villain Outfit:Image
Villain

Associates: None that still associate with her. She has a few business connections with the black market.

Personality

Sarah is playful, but she is also heartless. To strangers, she seems to be nothing more than a slightly hyperactive teenager, and even seems younger than she really is. However, anyone who has maintained more than a single conversation with her begins to realize that she is heartless, and has no ability to emphasize with other people. Her ability to merge with objects makes her unstable, and unable to make lasting connections with the people around her. She sees people for what they can do for her, not for who they are. She frequently discards people who are of no more use to her.

She believes that anything is achievable through careful application of force, and will refuse to back down from a challenge.

Equipment

Power 1: The ability to merge with objects. This is similar to the ability to walk through things, and Sarah often uses it in this way, but there are marked differences. While merged with an object, she is injured by damage done to the same object. However, she can also travel great distances along an object she is merged with. (For example, if she were in a long hallway, she could merge with the wall and separate again in a second.)

Power 2: While merged with an item, she can manipulate the arrangement of the molecules within the object. Mostly, she can only make certain areas less dense by making others more so. In this way, she can allow others to walk through a solid object by temporarily giving it the density of water. The object will automatically reset to its former state when she separates from it.

Power 3: After many years, she learned how to harness these two powers in conjunction to create a very basic form of mind reading (By manipulating the electrons that process information in the brain so that the information is routed through her first). She can merge her hand with the brain of a person, as long as they do not physically resist (This type of mind reading is not psychic in nature, and thus mental shields don't work. Physical shaking, however, makes it impossible to control), and read any thoughts that are on their mind at the time. This ability will only allow her to see what the person she is 'reading' is actively thinking about, and she has no control over what she does and doesn't receive.

History

Sarah grew up in the same town Warren did. The two of them were close friends, for a while, and both confided in each other about their abilities. Sarah, however, was much less careful about how she used hers than Warren was. She would use it in plain day, to get what she wanted from stores, teachers, anyone. She frequently tried to convince Warren to help her, and he did on a few specific occasions. However, the two of them eventually became involved in more than they could handle, and Warren left. Sarah was left alone in the town, unaware of what had happened to Warren. She became more difficult to control, and more violent towards people that tried to get close to her.

On the day she turned 18, Sarah left the town with her own plan in mind, and has spent the last year preparing for it. She is a class one thief, and has evaded being caught by anyone who is after her. She has a very large amount of cash distributed among various banks, ready for withdrawal at a moment's notice.

So begins...

Warren thought about her offer; it seemed fair enough. If she could find a way to permanently dismantle it, even better. Not that it was up to him, though. Rylie was probably the one she'd have to ask. Warren didn't really care that much anyway; the computer was a much bigger threat in his mind. If she went back there, she'd probably see it and get curious, unless they could keep her distracted. Maybe he could make the door to the computer room look shut. It shouldn't be that hard-although, his track record so far wasn't exactly up to par.

Warren was about to answer her when another voice rang out. "Oh, come ONNNN. If you want to sleep with her, you really need to work on your wooing talk." Warren flipped around to see Sarah Gorman demerge from his bed, lying in a provocative position. She rolled off the bed on to the floor and stood up.

"What?!" he said, staring at her.

"Hello, uh..." Sarah walked around the two of them, looking Ophelia up and down. "What did he say again? Carson?" Sarah gave a skeptical look back at him and whispered, "Really? That's the best you could come up with? You should have gone with something exotic, like Xavier... or maybe Tiberius." She laughed and sat down on the bed, crossing her legs and leaning back. An awkward silence followed while she inspected her nails. She looked up at them. "Well, continue!" She waved her hands as if she were pushing Zoey and Warren together.

Warren watched as Ophelia became incredibly uncomfortable. He felt the same way. He ignored Sarah for now, and turned to the other woman. "Yeah, sorry about that. But like I said... trust issues. I'm Vince. Drummer. Vince Drummer." He reached out to shake her hand as Sarah started to chuckle. He sighed, and glared at her. Looking back at Ophelia, who was giving him a look, he gave an awkward grin. "Heh... sorry, force of habit. It's actually Graham Anderson"

Sarah chimed in, "Try again."

"Harry Lewis."
"Nope."
"Kyle Fisher."
"And again..."
"Thomas Young."
"Oh, for christ's sake, how many names do you HAVE?"
"Frank Wright."
"Try again!"

Warren was getting fed up, and he finally just shouted, "NATALIE FRICKIN' PORTMAN!" An awkward silence followed, before Sarah whispered in his ear.

"Please tell me you never actually went by that name," she said, holding back a laugh. Warren pushed her away from him, before turning to look at Ophelia. "Fine. My name is Brandon Francis."

"Oh, I give up. His name's Warren," Sarah finally said, stubbornly moving to the opposite end of the room, "And I'm Jordan."

Warren threw his hands in the air in frustration and went back to sitting on the bed, this time as far away from Sarah as he could go. "Look, I get it. I used fake names. So tell me, what are you doing here, Sarah?"

Sarah pushed off from the wall and walked over to him. "Oh, I've been looking for you. You've done a good job, you know, making yourself vanish. It took me ages to find you." Warren looked at her questioningly. "Oh, come on. You don't really think your elaborate scheme tricked me, do you? I went and dug the 'body' up a few days after the burial, and boy was I surprised-"

Warren interrupted her before she could get much further, "OKAY! That's all very well and good, but that still doesn't answer my question."

"Oh, I'm here to ruin your life and destroy everything you care about," Sarah said in a completely serious but very lighthearted tone. She looked around the room, "Although, if this is how you've been living that might be easier said than done." She plonked herself down right next to Warren on the bed, putting her head on his shoulder. He immediately stood up and backed away. Sarah sighed, then leaned back and looked at the two of them. "So... What's this about a super-missile?"

Warren and Sarah both turned to look at Zoey and simultaneously said, "We're not a couple!" The two of them returned to glaring at each other. Warren spoke first. "Look, I don't know what you want from me, but I'm not going to let you sit here and ruin this conversation!"

"Oh, fine. I'll just be outside if you want me." Sarah smiled and walked to the door, where she appeared to walk straight through it. Just before her hand vanished, she gave a little half wave. Warren watched her go, then relaxed a little. He looked back at Ophelia.

"Sorry about that," he said, before leaning against the wall, "As far as your offer, I'm not really the one to ask. I didn't want to get involved in any of this; I think it's fairly obvious I'm not exactly the gung-ho 'save the civilians!' type. You should go back and talk to Rylie-and leave me in peace."

Warren was surprised by Ophelia's assertion. It wasn't often that people would choose to negotiate with him over other people; most found him too abrasive. Although, he suspected it might be because she thought he was more likely to mess up and give her information by accident. He thought for a long time, trying to find anything wrong with letting her see the machine. He could hide the door... then he just needed to make sure that Sarah didn't find out about any of this. And convince Rylie. He could handle one of those now, though.

Warren looked at the wall, and gave it a resounding kick. He cursed and grabbed his foot, but kept watching the wall. After nothing happened, he walked to another wall and gave it another kick, with a similar result. He worked his way around the apartment, kicking the walls. Finally, he had kicked every wall in the apartment, and he turned to Ophelia, putting his finger over his lips. He picked up his microwave and lifted it above his head, then dropped it from as high as he could manage. It slammed into the floor.

"OW!" a voice rang out. Warren grinned.

"I knew it. Sarah, I thought I told you to leave!" He shouted, no longer sure what she was merged with. A voice came from the wall in the corner.

"Make me." A series of giggles resounded through the room, moving in circles around the apartment. Warren turned to Ophelia.

"I'll take you with me, but it's not wise to go until we deal with this. If we can get her to demerge, I can incapacitate her, but it won't work while she's merged with something." That wasn't entirely true. Warren could easily put her in a dream right now; but if he did, she'd lose control of her body and deactivate her power while still inside the walls. He didn't really feel like killing anyone today, so he thought it was best to wait. He moved to the kitchen, picking up as many pieces of silverware as he could find. He headed back to the center of the room and handed some of them to Ophelia. "How good are you at knife-throwing?" he asked, chucking a fork at the nearest wall. It bounced off, and Warren cursed under his breath. "I used to be able to do this..." he muttered.

Warren moved around, chucking knives at the various walls. He was out of practice; almost all of the ones he threw were falling to the floor. He looked over at Ophelia, who had a much higher success rate. "Try to get one in every wall; she can't use her abilities safely if they're damaged. It's the only way to force her out of the walls." Seeing her confusion, Warren explained, "I'm pretty sure you've guessed we know each other. She has a power; pretty sure you figured that out too. She can merge with any object that is equal or larger than her in mass. Sort of like walking through walls, but different. Any damage done to an object she is merged with transfers to her; if we get a knife in every wall, floor, and ceiling, she'll have to come back out." Warren punctuated this by picking up one of his failed throws and stabbing it into the ground.

Sarah, meanwhile, was flirting back and forth all around the apartment. She tried to weaken the floor beneath Ophelia to stop the knives, but Warren forced her out of the floor by stabbing it. Eventually, she was left with only one more option; the ceiling of the bedroom.

Warren saw Zoey try to get the knife into the ceiling, but unable to reach. He picked up another one of his failed attempts, and climbed up on top of the bed. "Get ready to grab her," Warren said, poising to plunge the knife into the ceiling. Just as he was about to do it, he heard a knock on the door. "Just a minute!" he shouted, before taking the knife and plunging it into the ceiling. "Grab her!" he shouted to Ophelia.

Sarah preempted him, though. She dropped herself from the ceiling just as Warren thrust with the knife, landing on top of him and pushing him down towards the bed. She flipped him around and sat on top of him, leaning in very close to his face. Viciousness crept into her voice as she whispered into his ear, "I am going to make you pay, Warren Hartgrave," she said, holding the knife she had pulled from the ceiling on her way down up to his neck. Warren froze and dug his hands into the sheets.

Warren felt another weight jump on the pile of bodies; the knife pushed slightly into his neck. Not enough to seriously wound him, but it still hurt. He let out a guttural protest as the struggle continued, forcing the knife up and away from his neck. He sighed in relief as he watched the two woman fight over the knife above his chest. Two women fighting over me... he thought, It would be erotic if one of them wasn't a psychotic murderbitch.

Sarah pulled back from the other woman, letting go of the knife. She merged with the bed, leaving the other two sweating and panting on top of her. There was another knock as the door opened.

"Is everything all-" Jason said as he opened the door. He surveyed the scene; knives were imbedded in all the walls, and a strange man and woman were sitting in the bed. "Who are you?!" he shouted.

Warren quickly rearranged his face into a shape Jason would recognize, feigning surprise. "It's me, Jason!"

Jason looked at him carefully. Then he paused, and looked up at the exhausted woman sitting on top of him. "Uh... right. I'll just... uh... leave you two alone." He slowly backed out of the door again, smiling and winking at Warren. Warren watched him leave, then catapulted out of the bed before Sarah could do anything else to them.

Zoey's knife imbedded itself in the furniture and Sarah was forced to slide back out. She landed with a thunk on the floor, a gash in her left leg. She immediately started to crawl for the couch, but Warren was ready for her this time.

He didn't bother with a replica of the world; she'd just find a way to kill herself if he did that. Instead, he left her on a featureless plain, with nothing to look at but stars; he made them look interesting, but made sure there was no way for Sarah to take her own life. Then he opened his eyes and looked at Ophelia. "I, personally, don't have any problems with letting you look at the equipment. We should go quickly; I don't know how long it'll take her to find another way out."

Warren walked to the door, indicated for Ophelia to leave.

"Sorry about that. I didn't know how it was supposed to work, and didn't have enough time to try to use your mind to fill in the gaps," Warren said, "If I have time to concentrate on it, I can do a basic type of mind reading that allows for details I don't know still come through in the dream. Like how your gun works." He opened the door back out into the street; there were fewer soldiers around, and the gunfire seemed to have moved further away. Hopefully it meant they could get back to the warehouse in peace.

--------

Sarah drifted around in Warren's dream, staring up at the stars. It didn't matter to her that they'd delayed her-she'd learned a few new tricks since Warren left. She knew where they were going; all she had to do was wait for his dream to wear off, then she could catch up with them at the warehouse.

Warren and Zoey hurried through the streets, finally making it back to the warehouse. Zoey's convoy was gone- Warren looked up and down the street. If the soldier that had been with her had gone back to report what had happened, they were going to have to deal with a whole host of problems. He sighed, and went up to the door only to realize he didn't know the code. He turned to Zoey, "I don't, uh... know the code. I don't suppose you could use whatever you did to get in the first time?"

Once the door was opened, Warren walked in and found the place deserted. He walked down the hallway into the main silo with the missile, looking at the mess from the aftermath of the fight. "Hello? Anyone?" They were all gone. Great. Warren turned to Zoey, "I have no idea where they went off to. But, I guess if you don't want to deal with Rylie, this is the best option."

-------------

Sarah felt the dream fade away, and opened her eyes on the floor of Warren's apartment. "Could've at least had the courtesy of putting me on the bed..." she muttered, lifting herself off of the floor. She looked around, convinced she was alone. Then she smiled. An armageddon-class nuclear weapon? A supercomputer with a database on every super on the planet? And she knew where it was kept. She looked at her hand and smiled to herself. A chance to destroy everything Warren had AND gain control of the two most powerful pieces of technology on the planet? Who could resist?

She moved to the door and pulled it open-she didn't bother pulling the knife out-and walked out into the hallway. On her way to the stairs, she passed the man that had entered while she was busy with Warren. She smiled and called to him, "Excuse me? You're the landlord here, correct?"

Jason turned and looked at her. "Yeah, that's me. Jason Thorne. Nice to meet you."

"I'm looking at a bit of property in the city; I don't suppose you have any available rooms?"

"As a matter of fact, there's an old couple moving out on the second floor. Something about ghosts and zombies..." Jason trailed off. Sarah gave him a questioning look, and he shook his head and refocused. "There's nothing like that here. People just get edgy nowadays. Let their dreams follow them to the real world. It's nothing to worry about. The space is available to look at now, if you-"

"I'll take it," Sarah said.

"But don't you want to-"

"Nope. I'm sure it's a lovely place. I'll move in tonight, with my first batch of rent. You can give me the keys then. I'll bring my references and information as well." She smiled and turned to go.

"It doesn't work like-"

Sarah whipped around and pulled a large sum of cash out of her shirt. She walked back to Jason, and handed it to him. She looked him in the eye and said, "I'll move in. Tonight." She held the cash in front of his face.

"Uh... right..." Jason said, grabbing the cash and taking a step back. "I'll, uh, see you tonight then."

Sarah returned to a cheerful demeanor, and popped her head to the side as she spoke, "Great! Thank you!" Then she hurried down the hallway, with a slight skip in her step. Jason watched her go and shook his head. "The people in this city..." he muttered, pocketing her cash.

Zoey did not take it well. Her face seemed to boil with rage as she began to threaten him. Suddenly, she grabbed him and he felt himself thrust up against the console, shoving her gun in his face. Warren stared down the nose of the gun, and he swallowed. Her face seemed to boil with rage as she began to threaten him. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her reaching for a button. "No, don't!" he shouted, turning his head away. Nothing happened, and Warren could feel her glare grow even more intense without even looking back up at her. He slowly pushed himself away from her, trying to back up. "Okay, okay... There's no need for that..." He indicated the gun, trying to push himself away.

----------

Sarah arrived at the warehouse to find that there didn't seem to be a door. She paced around it twice to make sure; this was definitely the place she'd taken from his mind. She sighed; the fact there was no door only proved it. "Oh, Warren... you really need to learn some new tricks." She walked up to the wall and put her hand against it, merging her way into the wall. Once she was fully merged, she moved around the wall looking for an opening to the inside. She felt a large open space in one section of the wall, and decided that was as good a place as any to look. She slowly poked her head out of the wall.

The woman she'd seen with Warren at the apartment currently had a gun to his face. He was reeling away, trying to back away from her. She watched as the woman mashed a few buttons on the control panel, which appeared to be hooked up to a massive missile. That must have been the thing she was looking for. There was another man up top, who seemed to be inspecting the cap of the missile. Sarah would have smiled if her mouth weren't still merged with the wall. She sat back and waited for an opportunity to jump in.

Warren nodded as Wade went downstairs, keeping his eyes on the streets. At least someone around here realizes the threat this stuff poses, he thought. Sure, some members of the group talked about it and everything, but Watcher seemed to be the only one who had actually done anything about it. Maybe Zoey would keep to her word and fully dismantle it, but still...

Warren's vision went black for a second, and he quickly lifted his head up again. He needed sleep; in this state, he was more likely to draw attention to the place by having his door illusion flicker in and out. He considered the pills again, but it was too risky; his powers were entirely sleep-based. There was no way a combination of them and those drugs could work out well.

--------------------------

Sarah had seen enough of the place. This was more than good enough for her; she knew what she needed to do to make Warren's life miserable. She worked her way through the walls, working her way to the back of the warehouse; as far from the door as she could manage. She didn't want anyone to see her sneak off.

As she stole away into the night, she began to plan. First step: find the highest bidder.

Sarah walked up to an abandoned warehouse, several blocks away from the one she'd been at last night. The rumors around the city had led her to a few promising leads on different people who'd be willing to trade for the information she had. She looked around for any indication that she was in the right place, but the whole thing was fairly unassuming; Which meant if he was here, he wasn't one of the standoffish types.

She moved to the door of the warehouse, which had a chain and lock blocking it off. Sarah looked back and forth, then moved forward and merged her way through the door. She demerged inside the warehouse, which was a lot less dusty than she would have expected. It still didn't seem used however. It was probably the place. Sarah walked into the middle of the room, and shouted, "Dr. René? I have something to discuss with you that you might find very important."

Sarah whipped around at the voice booming through the warehouse. "Jordan Carter, I walked, and I asked. And I heard you were interested in any new kinds of technology?" She paused for a second, "I have an offer that I think you'll want to hear." She prepared to dive into the floor, should he activate some kind of defenses. "I'd prefer to do any of my dealing face-to-face, though. I'm not a huge fan of talking to the ceiling like a crazy person."

Sarah looked up at the ceiling, looking for any indication of where the sound was coming from. Clearly, this guy had cameras or something posted all around the building. "Now, is it really prudent for a girl like me to let all her secrets out to the first guy she meets?" she said, "Why don't we meet face to face. I don't like doing business over loudspeaker. I can assure you I'm unarmed."

Sarah turned and watched as an elevator rose from the floor and a man stepped out, followed by a large, looming robot. A metallic thunk behind her implied they had been joined by another, but Sarah didn't turn to look. She let the soles of her shoes merge with the floor, ready to sink down at a moments notice. She didn't blink at the mention that he was armed; she expected as much, and all she had to do was dive into the floor if things went south. "What if I were to tell you that I know the location of an Armageddon-class nuclear warhead inside the city, along with all of the defenses in place to keep it safe?"

Sarah sat silently for a second, as if she were giving it thought; finally, she spoke, "I don't want much. One of the supers guarding it; I want him. Alive. Don't let him get away, and don't kill him." She paused a second, "and, of course, anything you may happen to get as a result of this information, be it power or money, would have to include me. We can negotiate those terms when they come around." She smiled, "So, what do you want to know?"

"Why I want him is of no matter to you," she responded harshly, before answering her other questions. "It's located in Warehouse 1045-D. There are seven supers guarding the place. There's a teenager, young and thin; he can induce dreams. If he gets you, you'll be sleeping on the floor outside the place. He's the one I want alive. Then there's an asian woman; she works for the military, has firearm training, but her ability won't affect any combat so she shouldn't be to hard to deal with. There are three other military types; two men and a woman. They all have powers, but I haven't seen what they are. Then there's a shapeshifter. She's usually in the form of a kitten, so if you can get her off-guard she shouldn't be a problem. Then there's a new guy; I think he's a shadow manipulator, but I'm not sure. The others don't trust him, so you might be able to turn him if you can get him away from the rest." Sarah smiled at the man, "I don't know what kind of forces you have, but their group isn't very coordinated. It shouldn't be too hard to separate them and take them out one at a time."

"I'm heading back there soon," Sarah said, "but as far as my powers go, it's a lot more than phasing. I can merge with an object, then manipulate it to make it weaker or stronger. For example..." Sarah walked over to the edge of the warehouse and found a shelf holding up a few crates. She put her hands up to it, and slowly merged with the selection. Once the merge was complete, she began to manipulate the shelf, making the section under the crate the consistency of quicksand. She felt the crate start to slid through both her and the shelf, before it crashed onto the floor below her. She pulled herself back out, leaving the shelf exactly as it had been before. She put her hand on it and pushed, just to prove it. "I can get people through walls as well."

Sarah watched as Dr. René went back down into his lair. It would take a lot of spying to get a clear picture of everyone's powers. Too bad the computer had been locked. It wouldn't have been hard for her to sneak in and get all the information she needed. As for his final request, Sarah didn't intend on listening to him. The more people working to take down the people in that warehouse, the more distracted they'd be when she went to grab Warren.

She walked outside, before merging with the street and sending herself along the road. She didn't intend on letting Dr. René follow her to her next destination.

-----------------------

Warren woke up long after the sun had risen, grabbing his shoulder and sweating. Realizing the bullet was no longer there, he began to calm down. He slowly pulled himself out of the bed, and moved to the mirror for his daily body reshaping. He went with an Italian look, black hair and and olive skin tone. He pulled on some basic clothes, an empty wallet with strips of money-sized paper in it, and left his apartment. He walked straight past the front desk, when he heard them mention a new tenant. Starting, he ducked out of sight and changed himself into the Warren that Jason would recognize. He walked back up to the desk.

"Good morning, Jason," he said, "What's this about a new person?"

"A girl about your age," Jason said, "Pretty. Forceful, too. Wouldn't want to get on her bad side."

Warren froze, "Did she pay in cash?"

"Yeah. Yesterday at around 5," he said, "still, it doesn't matter. She has the money, so..." He stopped talking as Warren left in a hurry.

As he left, Warren returned to the Italian look he'd chosen, and started through the city. The war of yesterday had become slightly more passive, with different parts of the city under the control of different factions. Warren lived in one of the areas still under control of the U.N.E., but the warehouse was under the gang control. Getting through the barriers was going to be tricky.

He stopped for breakfast first, paying at a fast food place with his much-practised application of inducing the cashier's dream. On his way to the warehouse with a breakfast burrito, he tried to get his knife-throwing back to where it used to be by targeting signs along the streets, picking it up again as he went. Eventually, he reached the warehouse again. He looked up at the roof, and saw Rylie sitting there. He waved, then went to the door and plugged in the code Zoey had given him earlier.
