Introduction

THE SETUP:

Many people are familiar with the Ouija Board, a piece of wood with letters painted or etched into it, with a pointer used to spell out messages from the spirits of the dead during a seance. Well, what people do not realize is that the original Ouija was something completely different. So come join the adventure and discover its true nature and origin.

BASICS OF GAME PLAY:

1. This RPG is Setup as a mystery/adventure

2. Members start off with no idea of the true Ouija board or its origins, but are only familiar with the classic wooden board with letters and pointer, designed to communicate with the dead.

3. Through the RP members will learn of and uncover each of the 4 items which make up the original Ouija board.

4. The first part will be found in a specific place, the others will be found using clues gathered from this first location.

THE PLOT:

Please read the following page for general information on the Ouija board

http://www.castleofspirits.com/ouijaboards.html

The origins of the Ouija board begin with two sisters; the Fox sisters, who actively claimed to communicate with spirits on a regular basis. They developed a system of knocks for each letter of the alphabet and so communicated with the spirit world using this method. Word traveled fast about the sisters' talent of contacting the dead and soon everyone from America to Europe wanted to do the same. In 1891 two gentlemen, Elijah Bond and Charles Kennard, had an idea to attach a planchette (pointer) to a board with the alphabet on it and had in fact invented the first Ouija board. Dr. Aldo Curry, the medical director of the 'Danvers Insane Asylum' of New York claimed that his asylum was witness to an outbreak of mass insanity, all stemming from the publics fascination and obsession with the 18th century parlor game. Dr. Walter Miller and his colleque Abegial McHugh are professors at Marshall College in Conneticut, along with their mentor Dr. Henry Jones. Walter is determined to recover the Quija device, a life long obsession, hopefully with the help of someone he can trust.

Wednesday, 8:45AM. Marshall College.
Classroom #32. Occult Sciences

Walter was running a little late for his class and so he hadn't had a chance to read through his mail from the other day, instead bringing them to school and placing the letters on his desk to be opened later. Had Walter been more diligent in paying attention to such matters he would have noticed a letter of particular personal interest to him, hidden among the bills and junk letters. This mornings discussion revolved around the Spiritualist movement of 18th century Europe and America, with a particular focus on the subject of communication with spirits. Most of the class was dedicated to the various instruments and tools used for such endeavors, mainly the Planchette, a crude-heart shaped piece of wood with a pencil attached at the tip and two wheels connected beneath the wider end. This forerunner to the smaller version used in tandem with the classic 'board' type, used a simple sheet of paper placed beneath the device to contain the messages received from the spirits of the dead.

Abegail swallowed, her nerves getting the better of her. Some of her students were only slightly younger than she was. Not quite thirty, Abegail was beginning her new job at Marshall College. The school system in Ireland and other places in Europe were more effcient and Abegail had worked hard to get her PhD. The job at Marshall came at a good time for her, she needed to leave Ireland.

With a big inhale in Abegail began her first lecture of the morning. Her speech was careful as she ensured that her heavy accent slipped in as little as possible. The last thing she neede was the students complaining because they didn't understand what she was saying.

Her lecture today was about the beginnings of the Grail myth, a subject they would discuss all year. Along with this class, Abegail also taught a regular European History, and medieval history class. She had to do well, her contract with the college was only for two years with the chance to be made permanent after the two years were up. She was hired to replace a retired professor who, due to failing health was forced to leave befor he would have liked.

Her red hair was pulled away from her face and pinned back as she stood and talked to her class. Most looked bored as all college students do, but a few were keen and asked questions. By the end Abby's nerves had calmed. Smiling she left the lecture room and headed to her office. Passing by a few of her colleagues, Abegail smiled and said hello. Unlocking the door to her office, Abegail entered and dropped her briefcase off on the messy desk. She hadn't been here long but it didn't take much for her desks to be littered with notebooks, texts and other various bits of things.

Abegail turned and headed out of her office again, this time in search of coffee. She had no idea where to find it but she figured if she poked into enough doors she was bound to find some. Walking down the hall, she poked her head into one door that was cracked open. A man was sitting at his desk reading a letter.

"Oh, excuse me. I was looking for a place to get some coffee." Abegail voice was apologetic.

Walter was slumped down in his chair in classroom #32 as he read through his long neglected mail, turning his head slightly to the sound of someone entering his class. Tossing all letters but one onto the desktop next to his well-worn, black hat Walter tilted his up slightly to answer the question which had been cast his way. "Oh, yes coffee. Down the hall and to the left. Normally it is for staff, not students, but guess I can make an exception this time." As with his personal life Walter had a slight haphazard way of dealing with the more mundane facets of academia, particularily when it came to remembering names and faces, leaving the young woman to correct his comment.

Abegail chuckled and stepped inside the door. "I am staff. Professor McHugh. Abegail. I am takin' over for Dr. Macroy in the History department."

Abegail stepped into the room and walked to the man, hand extended her. "Thank you for the tip on where to find the coffee. I have not had a great deal of time to get to know the campus yet." Abegail kept her smile. "You are?"

Abegail glanced around the room attempting to get a sense of what the man taught. He was older than she was, likely a permanent member of the staff. His room didn't give enough away for her to peg down a particular subject however. So, she waited for him to introduce himself so she could ask him.

Not one easily impressed or concerned for the thoughts of others regarding his slightly nonchalant nature Walter remained slouched down in the chair behind his desk. Although Walter wasn't much older then Abigail he did seem a bit beyond his years, perhaps it was the way he wore his hair, a style rather unusual for such a period, being of unconventional length and hanging down over his ears slightly. He was never overly concerned for his unkempt ways. Particularly since the hat, which he almost always wore, did quit a good job of hiding his rather uncouth hair. "Sorry. I didn't mean anything by it. I never really pay much attention to the goings-on at this college, unless it somehow involves my own work." Walter said with a slight smile, continuing, "See here." Extending his arm to reveal a single addressed envelope. "You see this letter? Well, I received it last week." Smiling again.

Abegail raised an eyebrow at the very casual manner the man expressed himself. "Aye, mail isn't all that uncommon for you is it? Professor?"

Abegail crinkled her nose at her slip of accent. The gesture made her look young, a motion a young girl presented with a bug might make. She took a step forward again, her hand still out waiting for him to shake it. What an odd man he was. Abegail looked him over. From here, he didn't seem too much older than she was but the hat made it difficult to tell. He was tall, that much was certain. Hair was barely visible under the brim of the hat. Abegail chuckled to herself thinking of her mother's opinion of longer hair on men, despite the fact that Abegail's own brothers tended to wear their's longer.

He seemed like an unusual man, likely taught Geography or Anthropology. He wasn't stuffy enough for the English department and too causual for any of the sciences.

Not wanting to be impolite Walter finally reached out and clasped the young womans hand, "Hi, don't know if you noticed the name on the door, but I'm Walter Miller Rivers. Actually, I normally go by Walter Miller when out traveling. I'm bit of a black sheep here at Marshall, as my teachings mainly involve the Occult and the metaphysical sciences. I'm afraid my reputation isn't as shinning as Dr. Jones." Releasing Abigail's hand Walter sat back in his chair once again. "So, Yourself? Your field!" After saying this Walter leaned forward and dropped his hat upon the desk.

Abegail stifled a laugh at the odd man. "No, I did not notice the name. I would not have thought I could get coffee in here if I had noticed the name." Abegail put her hands behind her back as he released he hand. "Pleasure, Dr. Rivers. Occult? Metaphysical Sciences? Interesting, not at all what I would have thought you taught." Abegail watched Walter drop his hat on the desk, his hair falling haphazardly around his head now without the hat to hold it back.

"I teach History. European, Medeval, with a specialty in Grail Mythology."

Abegail tilted her head, "Dr. Jones? Indiana Jones? I have met the man, briefly when I first arrived. He is gone right now is he not? I believe he mentioned that he was leaving shortly when I met him, what it is now, about a week ago?"

Abegail's curiousity was creeping in, "So this letter, must be something important for you to be so excited about it. Not common mail I assume?"

The sound of Andrea's heels clicking on the hard floor echoed down the currently deserted corridors of Marshal College, as she searched for a particular class room. It had been years since she had last stepped foot in the college yet nothing had changed, even the old musty smell was still present. Even the heat was still incredible, boarder lining unbearable, It was 1941 for heavens sake you would have thought they would have invested in Air-Conditioning. Using her clutch bag to fan herself, she turned another corner, trying to remember the directions the secretary had given her but quickly spotted the room in question 'Walter Miller Rivers' a golden plaque announced the occupant of the room. Smiling she straightened her dress and flicked her long blonde hair back over shoulder before knocking lightly on the door before opening it and stepping in "Professor Miller?" she asked with a smile before noticing the red haired woman "Oh I'm terribly sorry, I didn't mean to intrude" she apologised quickly.

Walter, who was still slouched down in his chair as he conversed with Abagail suddenly snapped to attention with the entrance of the 'blond vision' into his classroom, something which annoyed Abigail somewhat, as he had not even attempted to correct his posture upon being introduced to her. Quickly grabbing his hat from the desktop he got to his feet, "Oh, No. I mean, um' no problem." Attempting to rectify his ungentlemanly behavior Walter turned first to Abigail and then back to the blond standing near the doorway, "Well! What a pleasant day this has turned out to be. Lovely." Then with an awkwardness suitable to such a situation he continued, "So. How may I assist you?" Still looking at the blond lady. The release of the slight tension which had infiltrated the room within the last few moments caused Walter's left hand to relax, sending the recently arrived letter to fall to the floor. Though no one had noticed.

Danvers Insane Asylum, upstate New York. Same time.

The staff at 'Damners' as it is affectionately known by staff and inmate alike, are overburdened by the unprecedented influx of new patients into the hospital. At times, it seems as though it's all a game of 'who will die first, to make room for another' as they barely have enough space to accommodate the patients they already have. Most of the inmates housed at Danvers are long time sufferers of mental disorders, ranging from slight Dementia to Dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality), though not recognized as such in the current era. What's strange is that all of the newly arrived patients seem to suffer from the latter. The diagnosis of such an infliction in this day and age was believed to be more aligned with possession, then mental deficiency. It seems as though the Danvers Insane Asylum has been overrun by individuals possessed by the spirits of the dead. Whats even more puzzling is that they all seem to be coming from a relatively small village, situated only a few miles from the facility, and which is often visited the Danvers medical director Dr. Aldo Curry.

Abegail's smiled politely as the pretty woman stepped into the room and Walter sat straighter in his chair. She watched him falter slightly, attempting to correct his partial rudeness to her.

"It's alright. I was just leaving. Coffee calls. It was nice to meet you Dr. Rivers." Abegail nodded to him and the woman as she attempted to walk past the blonde who was in the door.

Abegail, awkwardly shuffled her way around the woman, making space for her to step in and talk to Walter. Once outside of the door, Abegail made her way down the hall to find the coffee. Once she had a cup in hand Abegail made her way back to her office, passing Walter's again. Shaking her head, Abegail smiled. "Pretty blondes always made mens head's turn."

Abegail took a seat at her desk and pulling out a notebook began making notes.

Andrea offered the woman a small smile as she passed her awkwardly "Sorry" she spoke again as the woman left the classroom shutting the door behind her, turning back towards Professor Miller she smiled and held out her hand for him to shake "Hi, I don't know if you've heard of me but I'm Andrea Lexington" she introduced herself "I use to be a student at this college actually" she laughed lightly.

Andrea took a quick glance around the professors office, it reminded her a lot of Indiana's or Dr Jones as he was to her back when she was a student, the only difference was the subject matter that filled the room, instead of things to do with archaeology, things to do with the Occult filled the room, yes, she had defiantly come to the right man.

"Mind if I sit?" she asked motioning to the wooden chair placed opposite the Professor on the other side of the desk.

Seeing Abigail excuse herself from the room, "Oh, yes. Well, it was nice to meet you Miss McHugh." Walter said in a manner which he consciously chose as to suggest that there was no special relationship between Abigail and himself, not wanting the pretty blond before him to assume that he was attached in any way to the young woman. Walter stood as he heard the blond apologize to Abigail for interrupting, even though she hadn't really interrupted anything. Walter was a few seconds late in taking the young woman's hand, but after casting a brief glance down at his unmoving appendage, reached out and took her hand. "No, I'm sorry. Can't say I remember you. Perhaps it was before my time." Walter said as he smiled slightly. After the brief hand orientated introduction Walter returned his arm to his side as Andrea looked around his office. Hearing her ask if it was alright to sit for a spell Walter returned to his chair, though this time he made sure to sit properly. "No. Please. Please sit." Waiting for Andrea to take the chair opposite his, "What would you like to talk about?"

"No, I'm sorry. Can't say I remember you. Perhaps it was before my time." Walter said as he smiled slightly Laughing lightly she nodded "I suppose you are right" she replied. Hearing him offer her a seat she smiled politely and sat down "Thank you" she spoke softly placing her clutch on her lap before looking up at him "What would you like to talk about?" He asked her "well forgive me, If what I am about to say seems a tad..." she paused for a moment thinking of the correct words "crazy. You'd be surprised at how many professors of the occult have laughed in my face at the subject, but I was told with some confidence that you could help me" she smiled slightly. Andrea knew he must be more confused now than ever and so decided to enlighten him "you see, I am an archaeologist and an adventurer like yourself and recently in when I was doing some excavation up in New York of an old hamlet called Hydesville. I came across something which I think you will find very interesting." Reaching into her bag she pulled out something wrapped in a white handkerchief, unwrapping it carefully as if it was a present, it was a small pocket size, leather bound book, placing it on the desk in front of him and smiled. "I believed it to be the diary of one of the Fox sisters" she spoke reaching out "but look at this" she quickly flicked through the pages only to show that there was no writing on any of the pages "utterly fascinating isn't it" she smiled "They used invisible ink" holding a page up to the light letters suddenly emerged.

Walter's eyes lit up at the very mention of the Fox sisters, "Oh my lord, the diary. Marry me." Walter blurted out jokingly. "I cant believe you have discovered the Fox sisters diary." Leaning forward in his chair with elbows propped upon the desktop and a look of attentiveness plastered across his face. "Fascinating, what does it have to say. Please tell me it speaks of the device." Walter mentioned the device to Andrea not knowing if she was familiar with the rumors of its existence, as very few had."

Andrea couldn't help but laugh at the marry comment "well you can imagine my surprise" she smiled "It was buried in a wooden box under the foundations of their old house, many people thought it was just an empty diary but i refused to believe it was nothing, nobody would take the trouble to bury an empty book." She was happy he seemed intrigued about the diary and hadn't laughed in her face at the concept, she looked up when he mentioned the device and she smiled brightly "I knew I came to the right person" she stated "some people seem to think I'm crazy for believing this devise exists!" she said rather excitedly. "As for whether it mentions the device, I honestly don't know, it's all in riddles and so Indy-I mean Dr Jones recommended I come and see you."

"I'm afraid I wasn't aware Professor" Andrea replied folding her hands in her lap "I'm glad someone shares my obsession" she laughed "I have plans to head back to new York, in a few days, you see the site unfortunately is still not fully excavated, I believe we have a lot more to find. I had to stop the dig early as the majority of my workers quit claiming that the site was haunted, unfortunately I was never witness to anything paranormal but my worker were quite adiment" she explained hoping he would find it interesting. "Anyway what I guess I am getting at is, I wish for you to come out and join me on the dig as I can't exactly say i'm all that knowledgeable in the Occult field, so you could be a valuable asset to me."

Had Walter been wearing his hat it would have been blown off his head at the very suggestion that he might take part in the further excavation of the Fox sisters residence in Upstate New York. "Oh boy." Walter exclaimed, "The letter." He continued. Jumping up from his chair he stumbled a few steps toward the office door, there on the floor lay the letter, sent to Walter and labeled with the return address 'Danvers Insane Asylum. Newburgh, New York.' Looking back at Andrea, "Isn't Newburgh the next town over from Berketville (originally Hydesville)."

Andrea was a little shocked when Walter jumped out his chair and rushed to his office, not knowing whether to follow him, she stood up but stayed by her chair as he muttered things about a letter "Danvers Insane Asylum. Newburgh, New York. Isn't Newburgh the next town over from Berketville" Walter asked looking back at her, Andrea looked for moment before nodding "Yes, an old friend of my fathers Dr Aldo Curry is the medical director there" she said taking her seat again, wondering what on earth Aldo wanted with Professor Miller.

Turning back to the letter on the floor Walter bent down and picked it up before returning to his desk. "Dr. Curry!" Walter thought out loud, "Where have I heard that name before? Seems familiar." He contemplated further. Holding the envelope in his left hand Walter poked his right index finger through and under the flap, tearing the paper. Haphazardly pulling the letter from the envelope and letting the envelope fall to the floor. Raising it higher Walter began to read.

"Dear Doctor Miller, my name is Dr. Aldo Curry, the medical director of the Danvers Insane Asylum in upstate New York, in a little town called Berketville. You may not remember me but, I had attended one of your lectures which you held in New York city at the Waldorf hotel. This would be roughly one year ago. In case you have forgotten, I shall now explain. I expressed an interest in the Ouija and communication with the spirit world, in relation to mental and emotional disorders. I have been visiting a nearby town from which we have recently been sent many unfortunate individuals, these people seem to be possessed by some malevolent spiritual force. The fact that all of these unfortunates have come from one specific location has led me to believe that there is something strange going on in the town. Rumors of Witchcraft, seances and various unwholesome activities have been reported. Ouija boards have been discovered in many of the households from which these new patients have come. Please Dr. Miller, I need your help and your advice on this matter. Can you help me? signed Dr. Aldo Curry."

Looking up from the letter Walter focused on Adrea's reaction to the message. "Now thats an eerie coincidence." Walter exclaimed.

"Now thats an eerie coincidence." Walter exclaimed and Andrea couldn't help but nod in agreement "It's rather extraordinary if you ask me, do you think that somehow my excavation of the Fox's home could have somehow spearheaded this? It all seems a little bit too, well extraordinary to just be a mere coincidence." Andrea spoke truly amazed at Aldo's letter to the professor, then a thought dawned on her and one of her gloved hands flew to her mouth "oh, you don't suppose the people he is talking about are my old workers, do you?" she asked with guilt flashing across her face.

Seeing the worry on Andrea's face Walter tried to comfort her, even though he had no way of knowing whether her colleagues were involved. "I don't know Mrs. Lexington. He did said that the phenomenon had something to do with villages fooling around with the Ouija. Frankly, I doubt the validity of his claims the traditional 'Ouija board' is pure fantasy, its a toy, a parlor trick invented by 18th century scam artists." Casting a glance at the letter once more, "Well, there is definitely something strange going on down there. Oh wait, there's more." Walter continued.

"I realized that this is perhaps not enough to spark your interest in what is going here. I cannot get into too much detail, as there are other interested parties. Just in case this letter is intercepted, I shall have to tell you when you get here. Lets just say, I have an item that would interest you."

After Walter had read the conclusion of the letter he looked at Andrea once more, "Well. That changes everything. Are you up for an adventure." Walter smiled.

Andrea understood Walter's attempt at comfort but she remained skeptical "even so, Dr Aldo Curry is not one to falsify claims Professor. He has a reputation of being brutally honest" she couldn't but let out a little chuckle with the last part, hearing the last part of the letter increased her curiosity further as her mind pondered who he could be talking about something minuscule suddenly became something a lot more daunting "about a week before I found the diary an incident was reported to me by one of my workers who had seen a man lurking around the workers accommodation and had attempted to bribe some men to tell him I were to find anything. I thought nothing of it really, many of my competitors often dispatched spies to my work sites but then a few weeks ago I had received information that my flat in New York had been trashed but nothing seemed to be stolen."

"Could it be possible that 'the other interested parties' Dr Curry speaks of, could have anything to do with the break in?" She asked curiously. A large smile appeared on Andrea's face when he asked whether she was up for an adventure "Try and stop me."

I left the possibility for another prequel open ;)

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

You can end this installment with a final post, if you want

Thank you so much for taking part, now on to the next adventure.

Man, I cant imagine not doing anymore of these :)

Maybe we can take these characters on different kinds of journies

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Back now and will post when I can.

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Hee hee. Very fun adventuresque post. I am working at the moment but will post later today. :).

Abby isn't going to be overly enthused about being strapped in.

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Posted.

Pulled all that stuff from my butt ;) Makes sense in a saturday serial kind of way. :)

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Did you leave it open like that for me to decide what is in there or just for me to sneak in a small post before you say what is in there?

Simply curious as to how I should set up my next post.

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Ill get right on it :)

Posting

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Not sure what you had in mind for what was in the wardrobe but Andrea opened it. :) So you can go ahead and fill in what she sees in your post.

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Yeah we can do that, or just kill her off :) Why dont we, in the next few posts each take turns setting up her death. Also feel free to lead the events and what happens in the story ;)

Will post after I post for "hell"

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Thinking that perhaps once we get to a place where it makes sense we can leave Andrea to her own thing rather than drag her along. What do you think? Let Walter be the driving force.

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Cool. Just having coffee and getting ready to post. Will read it again and then post mine.

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

i split the double post into 2 posts :)

Re: [OOC] In Pursuit of The Ouija Device

Sorry for the wait, and for the double post ;/
