Introduction

The Oblivion Crisis has passed, leaving destruction as the first echoing note in the song of a new era. With no ruler and little hope, the citizens of the Empire can only wonder what this new age will bring....

It is the year 4E01, the first year of the Fourth Era. The Gates of Oblivion have closed, but the destruction across Tamriel remains. In the aftermath of the Oblivion Crisis, as many have begun to call it, the Empire finds itself without an Emperor. In many provinces, there are whispers of succession, in particular in the Summerset Isle, where a faction known as the Thalmor speak out against the Empire's lack of aid during the Crisis. In the Imperial City, with no emperor and no heirs left, the members of the Elder Council each vie against one another in an intense political game to claim the throne for themselves. It seems that already the new era is marked by changes in power, with almost every major faction changing leadership within the past few years, or looking to do so soon. A new Archmage, a new Listener, a new Gray Fox.... Tamriel feels reawakened, refreshed by the new era, but wary as it marches forward into the unknown. The Oblivion Crisis shook the world, and a new era brings hope, but also fear.

-- Be literate.
That is, please be descriptive with your actions and characters. I'm not necessarily looking for long posts or walls of text, but just something that adequately describes what you're doing.
-
-- Be realistic.
Characters should appear and behave realistically. Sure, this is a fantasy roleplay, so characters are going to be anthromorphic cats and lizards, but they should still be believable. So no khajiit with pink fur, no Imperials with lime-green hair, etc. Characters should also behave realistically; please no meta gaming (ie, when your character knows something that you as the player know but they realistically would not), no doing things for the sake of causing unnecessary strife or drama, etc.
-
-- Be active.
If you're not going to be able to be active, don't make lots of characters, and certainly don't make important ones. If you know you're not going to be on, don't trap other peoples' characters interacting with yours while you're away, and please announce before you go how long you will be inactive.
-
-- Keep Things Canon!
Characters should be only canon races (though, in some situations, I may allow characters that are not one of the playable races, as long as they've actually been included in the game series), and things like names and origins should reflect that. Backstories involving canon plots should be mostly the same. That's not to say that each character has to follow the storyline of Oblivion (or previous games) to the letter, but when considering your character's backstory, any changes to canon plots should not affect the overall story progression or outcome in a major way. For example, no matter what, Martin Septim died and the Black Hand was wiped out.
-
-- Claiming Canon Characters
You may do this, but please be realistic with them. Try to follow their personalities and stories as best you can. Don't try to claim canonically dead characters, like any of the Septims, because, obviously, they're dead.
-
-- No Powerplaying
Obviously, by the end of any major quest arc in the games, your character is pretty powerful. Therefore, if you're the Hero of Kvatch, the Gray Fox, the Archmage, the Listener, etc., your character will probably be pretty strong. For that reason, and for reasons of fairness, please keep your character to only holding one major title. That is, if your character is the Hero of Kvatch, don't make them also be the Archmage and Gray Fox. Pick one title and leave the rest for other players.
-
-- Be Fair
On the same note as the above rule, please be fair when deciding how your character and the story affected each other and other players. Obviously, if we're in this roleplay, we've all played the game, and so it's likely you'll end up with multiple characters who want to be the Hero of Kvatch or the Listener or whatever. Obviously, in most cases only one player can hold a title, so in that regard it's first-come, first-serve. But still, when someone wants to be involved in the same plotline, be fair and try to work something out where both characters were involved in a way that is satisfactory for both players.
-
-- On things that weren't in the game....
Even though Oblivion takes place exclusively in Cyrodiil, your character may have aspects from other provinces or other games. IE, if your character came from Skyrim, they might be a Companion, or they could be a werewolf even though werewolves were not in Oblivion. Your character may very well hold titles from previous games, since the first three games took place not all that long before Oblivion did, chronologically. I haven't played any of those games extensively (I regret to say), so I can't provide specific examples.
