Introduction

Posting has begun.

(Created by FunImation - http://funimation.com/blackbutler/ )

Story description will be up in a moment.
Three families of destinies intertwined. Timerline and Milena, engaged. Milena and Grayson, bound in hate. Grayson and Timberline, friends as children, and friends for life.
Three families, the parents brutishly murdered the same night, their blood splattered across the walls and windows, and across the faces of their three children.
Three children, vanished from their homes the day following their parents' deaths, only to return in the following succession.
First Timerbline, three months after his disappearance. Then Milena, a year afterwards.
And finally, now, three years later, Grayson returns.
And each one shadowed by a mysterious presence.

Now, the three must come together, on this the eve of Grayson's return. And together with their unearthly servants, they must now search out those responsible for their parents' deaths.

(You get to come up with the story of what happened while they were missing, and why it was necessary for them to summon a demon/angel/Shinigami to their side.)

# England, and Thereabouts, 2011-03-16 09:22:44, as written by Everscale
The night was deep and dark. Velvet blackness blanketed every inch of the sky, obscuring the moon and stars. Alyss could feel a storm brewing; he sensed it the thin skin of his dark wings. The air was deceptively still, but not calm, as some foolish humans might think. There was a tension, an energy there, the tingling sensation of the world holding its breath, preparing for a brewing storm. Pelting rain, lightning, thunder. He could feel them all, building just behind the surface of those immense clouds.
He was glad that the mansion was in view. He hated flying in the rain.
Drawing close to the vast marble walls, Alyss tipped his wings lightly, swerving off to avoid a collision which would damage the building more than it would damage him. The air whistled shrilly over the thin skin of his wings, echoing in his pointed, fox-like ears as he listened for commotion within the mansion. All seemed quiet, and for that he was glad. It was never good to hear things moving in a human home during the gray-lit hours before dawn.
Straightening out again, Alyss beat his wings forwards, slowing his flight until he was barely hovering over the window-ledge. By the time he touched down against the smooth stone, he was a flying-fox (a type of giant bat) no longer.
He crouched upon the window-ledge as a man.
With careful hands he unlatched the window, slipping into the hallway beyond. He pulled the curtains shut behind him, before moving on down the hall. Every window he came to, he jerked the curtains closed, leaving solid darkness in his wake. It would do no good to let the halls light up with the violence of the coming storm, and wake his master.
As though his thoughts had directed his feet, Alyss found himself standing before Exodus’ door, gazing at the dark wood through tranquil eyes. He reached out, prodding the door open a crack, and peered in towards where his master slept.

Exodus Grayson was not asleep. Again. For what felt like the twentieth night in a row, Exodus had bolted upright in the middle of the night, a nightmare having plagued his dreaming world. He groaned softly, squeezing his eyes shut. He was. So. Tired. With a desire strong enough to kill something, Exodus got off his bed, after turning on a lamp just as the door opened a crack. Swiftly grabbing one of the throwing knives the Earl kept at his bedside, he hurled at the crack with an emotionless face.

He didn't wait to hear the thunk of the thin blade sliding through the crack, stopping as it was caught by the hilt. He made his way over to the door, hurling it wide open and catching the blade as it dropped.

"I'm going to my office," he announced dully, brushing past his butler. He paused, before looking back at Alyss. His eyes were uncertain, before he cleared it away from his gaze. "I want tea."

Damian rolled around in his bed, a drop of sweat rolling down the side of his pale face. The raindrops, tapping against the window, sounded like somebody trying to break it open... at least to him. He kicked at the blankets, as if they were suffocating him, while he wrapped his arms around his stomach. Finally, his eyes snapped open, as the boy sat up, breathing heavily. He ran his tongue over his dry lips, pouring himself a glass of water, with his shaky hands, quickly gulping it down. Damian shivered, pulling his knees up. Maybe he shouldnt have slept with his hair wet.

Rubbing his tired eyes, the Duke of Timberline quietly got out of bed, making sure the floor wouldnt creek. The last thing he needed was for Cagalli to come running into his room, taking his temperature again. Reaching for his coat, he draped it over his shoulders, opening his door slowly. It made a small creeking noise, which caused him to freeze, and hold his breath. His eyes wandered from side to side, before easily slipping out of his room. Mission one, cleared.

Damian tip-toed towards the stairs, and took careful, small steps to get down. He could have just slide down the railing, but he didnt want to risk falling, and making a bigger noise. No need to bother Cagalli. Finally, he made it into the kitchen. Flickering on the lights, he covered his mouth as he coughed, and walked over to the fridge. "Hmm...." Getting himself a plate of cake, he sat down and took a bite.

Solaris sat outside in one of the several chairs, leaning back in a relaxed fashion as he felt the first drops of rain and a quiet roll of thunder. "Ah... it's raining.." He said to himself softly, getting up quickly and heading back inside. He flicked the moisture off his wings before hiding them away and taking on his wingless human form. Golden eyes flickered around the hallways as he locked the door and hurried up to his Mistress's room, remembering that she had left the window open before sleeping that night.

"I'm almost insulted, Master Timberline."

A calm female voice would drift into the kitchen from behind Damian--a voice that seemed impassive and entirely impartial at first thought, but concealed a hidden intensity behind it, a well hidden emotion. Behind Damian, a small figure sat at one of the chairs around the dinner table, her hands laid across her lap upon the fabric of a deep black dress; the dark blonde hair that swept down around her soft jawline contrasted heavily with the darkness of the dress she wore, and as her light brown eyes stared directly at Damian, a flash of crimson seemed to pass through them. She appeared a girl of no more than eighteen, her full height perhaps at best five feet and eight or so inches; the youthful beauty and grace of her countenance seemed to suggest if anything a frail innocence. The atmosphere around her, however, the very air that surrounded the figure, was akin to someone who was prepared, and capable, to commit a killing.

Of course, Cagalli did no such thing. Quite the opposite. She stood upright and walked to Damian with a stern expression. "To think that not only you believed I could not hear you creaking about upstairs, but also that you had hoped for some reason to avoid me!" She pulled a chair to sit beside Damian, and decided she would not begrudge the child a slice of cake, knowing (but not really understanding) his love of sweets, which Cagalli found disgusting. A smile appeared on her face as the dark atmosphere about her simply dissipated, a smile that seemed impossible to read or understand--it seemed there was always something drifting just behind the veil of that small, enigmatic smile.

And of course, it had to come soon. "You should be in bed, fast asleep, master...did you have a nightmare? You're not sick, are you?" The tone of her voice suggested concern, but the still-present smile made that impossible to judge.

"I'm almost insulted, Master Timberline."

Damian coughed again, though this time, almost choking on the cake he was eating. He slapped his hand down onto the table, struggling to get the piece of cake down his throat. "GWAH! Cagalli, you scared me! I didnt mean to.. I mean, uh... no, no that's not it. You're misunderstanding, I... I just didnt want you to worry." he said all in one breath. The boy flinched as his maid walked over. "Sorry.." he said in a hoarse voice, sinking down on his chair. Cagalli sure can be scary when she wanted to. It almost sent chills down his spine.

"Ah.. oh, um. Yes I'm fine. No nightmare, I was just craving cake." he lied, rubbing the back of his back. "You dont have to worry! Really..." his voice trailed off, before he stuffed his mouth with some more cake. Dont look guilty, dont look guilty... he told himself, trying his best to put on a straight face. Although he tried not to look at Cagalli, he watched her from the corner of his eyes.

"Uh, so... the night sure is beau--" Damian stopped himself in mid-sentence, reminding himself that it was raining. "It's raining." he randomly blurted out, like that wasnt obvious. He cleared his throat, at the awkward silence, taking another bite out of his cake.

Alyss smiled slightly, bowing to Exodus.
"Of course, Young Lord." He murmured, pushing back the white lock of hair which dangled from his temple, "What type of tea do you desire?"
It was a natural question, one he asked almost every time he found his master awake this early in the morning. At this hour, before the sun had shown its face.
And just like every other morning, he unconsciously began to list the teas they had.
"We have Black Tea, Green Tea, Oolong, Mint, Earl Gray..." He continued calmly. He didn't even have to think about it, in the end. It had happened too many times.

Cagalli watched Damian carefully as he attempted to swallow the piece of cake he had begun to eat before Cagalli had made her rather...unexpected entrance. "I'm sorry, Master," she spoke; it was impossible to detect whether there was genuine sincerity in the apology. "I merely wished to make my presence known." As he spoke, Cagalli's deep brown eyes peered into his, as if seeing straight past his stutters and stammered excuses. She gave an almost forlorn sigh. "How it saddens me that you would so cruelly reject my concern for you, my desire to be able to attend to your every pain and worry." The smile refused to disappear, but the sorrow in her voice felt strangely true, and her eyebrows arched downwards, giving her eyes a melancholic quality. "I have been your loyal maid and companion for three years, have you not come to consider me anything more than a common housekeeper?"

After Damian responded, he returned to eating his cake; at length, he spoke again. "The night sure is beau..." Before he completed the sentence, Damian halted abruptly, and then observed, or rather suddenly blurted, "It's raining." Cagalli spoke nothing for a few seconds, looking at Damian, and then she stood up, drifting slowly towards the window that overlooked the dinner table; she looked out at the falling rain and the clouds that partially obscured the glow of the ethereal moon. "Yes, it's raining," she said, looking back at Damian with the smile still playing upon her pale lips. "But that does not mean the night is not beautiful."

"We have Black Tea, Green Tea, Oolong, Mint, Earl Gray..." He continued calmly. He didn't even have to think about it, in the end. It had happened too many times.

Exodus looked at Alyss. Didn't the butler already know what kind of tea he wanted? The red haired Earl blinked, before turning, his voice curt as he replied. "The Earl Gray. The one from India." He started walking down the hallway, his gaze rarely straying from the path he was on. However, he was not one to not notice the giant spider's web clinging to the corner.

For all everybody knew, Exodus seemed to pale, and just...move a little bit to the side.

Biting his lip, his eyes wide with almost terror, he did not stray from the center of the hallway.

Inside, though, the boy was panicking. Spiders had never been his best friends, nor had they ever been his friends. In fact, they were often featured in his nightmares and his memories.

"I have been your loyal maid and companion for three years, have you not come to consider me anything more than a common housekeeper?"

"Housekeeper? Of course not! Why would you even think like that?" Damian frowned, and watched as Cagalli walked over to the window. "Hmm, yeah I guess that is true. But I dont really like the rain. It's not fun." he mumbled. I wonder what Exodus is doing. I hope he's doing okay... When would I get to see him again? With a small sigh, he leaned his elbows on the dining table, tilting his head from side to side. Finally, he got up, making his way over to where Cagalli was standing, peering out the window. Damian squinted his eyes, as if having trouble seeing, before smiling. "Yeah... maybe the night still is beautiful, even when it's raining."

His hands tightened around his coat, as Damian forced himself not to cough. No, he didnt want to come down with another cold... that meant he wont be able to go out much. "Uh, I'm going to go read a book or something. I dont think I'll fall asleep anytime soon." Giving her a happy smile, he quickly walked out of the kitchen, heading back into his room. Damian grabbed a book, laying on his table, before letting himself fall onto his bed weakly. He hated himself for being so weak... why couldnt he be healthy... and perhaps have a normal, happy life.

Alyss watched Exodus with something akin to amusement in his eyes. Wordlessly, he stepped forwards, reaching out and plucking the spider; web and all; out of the corner. He smiled slightly, wrapping the spider in his hand. He could feel it running around in a panic in the base of his palm. It bit him once.
A lot of good that did them...
"Earl Gray, young lord," Alyss agreed calmly, bowing to Exodus, "And I shall get to the cleaning right away."
Of course, by cleaning, he meant dusting. Dusting the spiders.

Cagalli nodded as she watched Damian left the kitchen, heading back for her own room. What he had said was true, she had to confess. For many people a maid or butler was treated as little better than a servant, something to be looked down upon--most masters would not call a maid by her first name, or perhaps by no name at all but 'maid' or 'servant'. Or simply 'you there'. Such dull people--but Damian was interesting and unlike most humans, his presence did not bore Cagalli; rather he added colour to what would otherwise be a bleak, boring day of doing the same thing Cagalli had been doing for countless ages.

She placed her small, lithe form down in the armchair she had previously been sitting at, and laid her head on her palm as she rested her elbow on the arm of the chair; and she listened to the sound of the rain pattering down on the roof and at the windows. At length, Cagalli closed her eyes, her mind remaining fully awake and prepared while her body rested and rejuvenated itself.

"Good," Exodus seemed to recover remarkably well - although he stuck close to the exact center of the oriental hall carpet, his bare feet making no noise on the thick plush. Moving carefully through the mansion (who knew what other insects lurked in the dark recesses of the Grayson estate?), he managed to make it to his office without much more disturbance. Sighing in relief, he opened the door, heart...pounding? Holding his lamp up higher, he entered the room, back ramrod straight and face emotionless.

The flickering light from the lamp cast the room into all different forms of shadows as Exodus made his way across the cluttered floor - for an Earl, he was remarkably messy. Cleaning was the butler's job, after all. He glanced at the window. What chances did he have of sneaking out into town to gamble with the fool's tonight? Suddenly, lightning struck and thunder rolled, as rain began lashing against his windows.

"Never mind," the Earl muttered, obviously annoyed by this turn of events. He sat down behind his desk, as he pulled a stack of papers towards him. Working in the dim light, he scanned the neat script, his eyes flying over the page.

Gwen was restless.
It wasn't the bitter emptiness of her room; for she was used to that.
It wasn't the quiet snores of the fox on her covers. He was lain on her bed, stomach exposed to the cool air, calm snores rippling through the silence.
It wasn't the consistant pounding of the rain on the castle roof- she loved the rain.
So what was it?
She didn't know.
Gwen lifted her head from the pillow and pushed back the silken bedspread so it half-covered the fox. The marble floor was cold against her bare feet, and she stiffened as a rush of fridgid air escaped through the open window in the corner. It was almost dawn; almost, but not quite. She stared at the window for a few moments, lost in the still wonders of the empty night sky. The outside world seemed almost foreign to her now, without the cacophony of the traders in the town and the whistles of the daytime winds and roar of the ocean to drift up to her spot in that castle. There was just the insistent drumming of the rain's pellet fingers on the window sill. She stuck an her index finger, elegant and pale in the moonlight, into a puddle on the windowsill and rubbed it against her thumb before turning to return to her bed when she sensed movement at her door.
She glanced over, pinching the two sides of her gentle silk robe together in one fluid movement, her purple eyes searching.

Solaris slipped into the room carefully, making his way to the window as the tapping of rain on the partially opened panes of glass sliced through dense silence. He looked at Gwen, "Ah... are you awake already? I was thinking that you were going to sleep until noon again~" He said softly, so as not to pierce the delicate morning that embraced the world. He closed the window, several drops of rain hitting his face.
His ponytail swayed with his movements, the result of forgetting over and over to cut it.
He couldn't resist, letting his wings poke back out and stretch a little, one at a time so he wouldn't knock anything over. He hid them away again immediately after, lest he forget when any guests arrived.

Moving with eternal grace, Alyss followed Exodus into his office. The young master would undoubtedly be working there for some time.
And Alyss felt he should inspect the room before the boy noticed something he hadn't...
Almost as soon as he walked through the door, his bat-like senses picked up a tiny life-form.
A very tiny life form.
Walking over to the desk where Exodus sat, he reached over his master's shoulder, picking up a stack of papers. He shuffled through them, as though he were reading them. It was only a moment before he found his target, snatching the tiny arachnid from the page before Exodus could see it and tucking it... somewhere.
For later.
He was a bat, after all.

Damian closed the book, as he finished reading it. He frowned at the flash of lightening and sighed. "What to do..." he mumbled quietly to himself. Once he woke up, it was kind of hard for him to fall back asleep, especially because he had cake just now. Once he had sugar in his system, sleeping was just not his thing. Rolling off his bed, Damian started to walk in circles, wondering what to do. He couldnt go outside since it was raining. Getting wet means his cold might get worse.

There was a bunch of paperwork on his desk, but he never even bothered wit them. Damian took a seat in front of the chess board, tilting his head. Turning the board around, he started to play by himself. "Check mate." he told himself before chuckling. "Ahh~ I'm so bored." he pouted, kicking his legs up in the air.

"Are there any meeting scheduled for today?" Exodus asked as he finished the last page, tossing the memo into the 'finished' bin. He pressed the tips of his fingers together, as he stared at the rest of the work on the desk. It was going to be a long morning. He picked up his ring - which had the Grayson seal on it, slipping it onto his middle finger.

Twisting it around and around, his eyes dark and thoughtful, Exodus suddenly leaned back in his chair.

"When is the duke coming to visit?" he asked suddenly. "I suspect soon."

He reached for an envelope and an empty sheet of paper, before grabbing his quill. It had certainly been a while since he talked to Damian. But what would he write? His quill paused over the paper - no ink because he had no words - Exodus suddenly dropped the quill.

Looking over at Alyss, he stood up. Digging through the cupboards for the Chutes and Ladders game, he tossed the board onto the ground, before sitting down, his nightgown pooling around him. Without looking at his butler, he pulled out all the pieces.

"It is impossible, Young Lord, to know when the Duke of Timberbline will appear." Alyss observed lightly, crossing the room and folding into a chair across from Exodus. He gazed at the game as the boy set it up. He could not fathom this fascination with board games; and never would be able to. Games such as these were a rather foreign concept to demons such as himself. Games, where he came from, consisted of killing something, torturing something's soul.
Board games... were just that. Bored games. Boring.

(Sorry;;; it's hard to post long when interacting with someone.)

Gwen relaxed and smiled softly when she realized it was just Solaris. "Hi," she said as he closed the window. She noticed his wings poking out and touched one gently. "No, leave them out," she said, glancing at his face before at his wings again a little shyly. "You can be yourself here," she said, looking up, surprised at how short she felt and laughed a little.

Solaris jumped lightly at the touch before settling again and looking at Gwen in surprise. He grinned, leaving them out now, "It won't be my fault if anything breaks." He chuckled. The blond looked outside, watching the raindrops race each other across the panes of glass. "Can't sleep?" Solaris asked, looking back at the other.

"You're a demon," Exodus deadpanned. "Who knows what your kind can do. Pick a color." He chose the red piece, the wood seeped with dye, before setting it down on the board. He looked up. He knew Alyss did not approve very much of board games, but then again, like he had stated before. Alyss was a demon and Exodus was a human.

They came from very different circumstances, and well, the redhead was the one who was in power.

He waited...silently.

With a falsely bright smile on his face, Alyss reached out and selected the white piece. A ridiculous choice, of course. A mockery to his dear friends the angels.
But then, what demon wouldn't want to be even more of a thorn in the side of the angels, at any possible moment?
"I hope I can recall how to play this game," Alyss commented wryly, "There are so many, Young Lord."
There were, naturally, quite a few board games.
And there was no chance in hell, of course, that Alyss had forgotten any of them, no matter how long it had been since they had played them.
