"Yes." Jareth remarked without sensor when Eva asked if she was making things more difficult.

"Its rare, although not unheard of, for humans to cross into the Underground these days. Usually there has to be some kind of magical predisposition present either in the individual or within their family. Of course you might have genuinely activated some pre-existing portal to this world by accident as well." Jareth shrugged with his good shoulder. "Nevertheless, the point is that you're here now and since you did assist me out of the goodness of your heart, I suppose I owe you something in kind."

Although Jareth's tone was still rather cutting it didn't escape his notice that perhaps he'd do well to hold back his bad attitude a little more on her behalf. Eva had helped him after all and in spite of appearances Jareth did posses some amount of honor. Plus the woman seemed to be the more compassionate type and Jareth could tell he was making her uncomfortable and even, perhaps, a bit self conscious.

"If you wish, you can come with me. I promise that once I can get to a secure location, I will help you find a way home if you don't manage to figure out a way on your own. You didn't specifically ask to be brought to my Labyrinth and this is a dangerous time to be wondering about the underground in general. I think it would be wise to camp in the maze tonight and then head to the Enchanted Forest tomorrow. I have an acquaintance there who can help us.

"If we go this way a ways," Jareth referred to the spot he'd disappeared through. "There's a green lawn that should be safe enough to set up camp. Most of my goblins are guarding the castle but there's always the chance we might run into a Junk Person poking about where they shouldn't be or something worse."

"What do you say?"

Eva nooded to him when he confirmed that she was making things difficult. It was the type of nod where she had expected as much, and then listened to him as he explained the different ways to cross into the labyrinth. She was beginning to understand and accept that maybe this whole experience was in fact real.

Jareth's tone was still a bit harsh, but she didn't hold that against him much. She smirked when she heard 'Junk Person'. She couldn't quite conjure up a proper image of one, but each time she tried she nearly laughed. But appearences could be and are decieving.

When Jareth spoke next, there seemed to be a shift in him. A more polite and he offered to help her, she smiled at this. "Thank you, Jareth." She said softly.

"I say it's sounds good." Eva said enthusiastically as she tried to look positive., facing the wall. After studying it for a moment, she looked to Jareth. "Am I supposed to just..walk through it?" She asked awkwardly slightly grinning at her own tone of voice.

"I'd advise you to keep your hands out in front of you as a general rule. But, yes. There's no trick to it per say. You just walk through and keep going until you hit green hedge. I'll be right behind you so you won't have a chance to get lost. This part of the Labyrinth is mostly straight forward. Nothing is going to unexpectedly shift on you." Jareth reassured her.

The lawn Jareth was referring to was just what he said it was going to be. Where much of the beginning part of the Labyrinth was all dry and brown looking with fallen branches and strange moss, this part of the Labyrinth seemed to open up into a series of lawns boxed in by low well manicured hedges and high vine covered stone walls that were more gray than tan. Green lush grass covered the area and every now and again there was a set of stone chalices and miniature obelisks placed decoratively about.

When looking at this part of the Labyrinth it was hard to remember that one was dealing with a maze at all. Or that it was particularly dangerous in any way.

Holding her hands out as instructed, Eva stepped through the stone. She watched her hands sink in and disappear, then continued to take steady steps through. And when she reached the lawn, she grinned. Comparing it to the dry and sandy place she had just been in, she sighed.

"I think I need to reconsider my career in Psychology." Eva laughed lightly, shaking her head. She stepped towards a tree, admiring it's beauty.

"Did you make all of the Labyrinth yourself, Jareth?" She asked, a small smile forming on her soft lips. Eva stepped away from the tree, looking at the rest of the place. She began to play with her ring, not even noticing the habit.

Eva was a peculiar kind of woman. Jareth concluded to himself as he followed her through the false wall careful to glance behind them lest someone happen to be watching them go. Her ease and general attitude completely threw him off. Her was a woman who had just popped herself into a strange new world and yet she was carrying on as if it was the most natural thing someone could do. Jareth wasn't really sure how to react to this kind of personality as his usual condescension just didn't seem to apply.

"No I didn't make it. Not in the sense your referring to that is. I've added my own interpretations here and there but the maze itself is original to the castle. There are parts like this that are thought to be quite beautiful, as I've come to understand, and you could say I've made an effort to preserve aspects of the Labyrinth's natural allure. Although I generally see it from the sky." Jareth remarked pointing one finger upwards.

Jareth sighed. "What to do. Hm."

Producing another crystal in his good hand, Jareth absently let the orb run back and forth over the front and back of his palm, juggling it one handed in the mystifying kind of way he was known for.

After a moment Jareth let the orb drop from his hand as it bounced gently like a rubber ball to the center of the lawn and in the blink of an eye transformed into the front door of Eva's grandmother's house. Porch stairs and all. Just the random door with nothing behind it.

"Well? Are you just going to stand out here all night? Go on. It'll be better if your inside. I assure you that it'll be just like home."

Eva's eyes followed the crystal as Jareth was juggling it in one hand. Her eyes flicked to her own hand, and she tried moving it in the same manner that he did. She pulled her hand close to look over it when she heard the crystal drop to the ground. Eva's eyes narrowed slightly when she saw the door.

"Is that..." Her voice was soft, and it trailed off not finishing the sentence. She was studying it, it seemed to carry every crack in the wood as the original did, when she heard Jareth's voice. He seemed to snap her back to 'reality', whatever that was.

"Ha...er, right. I'm going." Eva stumbled on her words slightly, as she walked up to the porch steps. She gingerly moved onto the first step, as if afraid it would disappear beneath her. Her hand began to sweat as she placed it on the handle. She replayed what Jareth had just said, 'just like home'. That home was the reason she was even in the labyrinth. The reason that made her wish to be somewhere else. She closed her eyes for a moment, then she pushed the door open.

Just as he said, the house was like the real one. Eva nodded in approval, and turned to Jareth with a decent, but slightly sad, smile on her face. "Are you staying out there or coming in?" She asked as she leaned against the door frame.

Jareth did follow her into the makeshift illusion that was Eva's grandmother's house. Apparently while Jareth was now somewhat impaired his abilities were still rather extensive. Noting the sadness in Eva's tone Jareth didn't comment on it. He'd simply picked the most relevant imagery associated with the woman to put her up in at the present moment and had no way of knowing the house's real significance to her.

Walking into the house Jareth headed directly for the kitchen so that he could attend to the rest of his injuries. He couldn't very well just let his fractured arm hang there. It was important to at least set it up in a sling and change up his wardrobe into something less cumbersome. For the first time in a long time Jareth felt his mortality creep at the edges of his inner world. As long as he was tied to the Labyrinth Jareth was more or less caught in a timeless kind of vacuum. But he was by no means impervious to injury or death and his close call on the bluff had deeply rattled him.

Since the time he'd assumed custodianship over the Labyrinth and the castle all potential threats to the kingdom had come from the Above and had been easily delt with. But now Jareth was facing a threat from within against a person who was potentially equal to him in intellect and power. Jareth needed to piece together Ariadne's plans and he needed to do it quickly before his problems escalated. But for the moment he was too tired to think straight.

"You wouldn't happen to have a first aid kit laying about. Would you?" Jareth muttered from the kitchen.

First thing first. Jareth used the present opportunity to change cloths. An ability he seemed to be able to muster at will. Transforming out of the rest of his armor, when Eva saw him next he'd be wearing a loose fitting ivory poet's shirt, tan breeches, and dark brown boots. His main like hair also wasn't as wild and looked shorter with just a few long pieces that hung down like a hanging plant. He looked visibly tired yet entirely determined as he sat at the table and stared without seeing at a point in the middle of the table; his mind somewhat clouded as he continued to chew the wad of faerie wing in his cheek.

Eva moved out of Jareth's way as he stepped into the house. She slowly followed behind him as he made his way into the kitchen. She was silent as he seemed to deepen into a world of thoughts. When he asked her about a first aid kit, she laughed.

"My Gran helped out at the hospital a lot. This i-was her house, so I'm sure I could find one. Oh...and-" She walked over to the counter, and found the little pain-killer bottle she had bought earlier. She smirked and walked over to it, grabbed them and pivoted towards the kitchen table. Slightly leaning over Jareth to place the bottle on the table in front of him.

"Nicely created, I must say I'm impressed." She began, meaning the house. "Everything looks the same, and I just bought those today." She finished, tapping the bottle's lid.

"I'll be right back." She mumbled, more to herself then to her company. Eva pulled away and left the kitchen, and headed up the stairs. Her hands trailed against the wall, finding it hard to believe that this was a mere illusion. She reached her grandmother's bedroom door, and paused for a moment. Sighing, she pushed open the door as she knew that Jareth had no spare time for her to stand around in sadness. Eva walked right into the bathroom, ignoring the rest of the room.

"Where, oh where are you." She half sung to herself as she opened up the cabinet doors beneath the sink. She pulled a few things out of her way, and reached in and grabbed the kit that was in the back. On her way out, her eyes caught a familiar sight. It was a picture that was taken a few years ago, on one of her holiday visits to Boston. It was Eva and her grandmother eating a piece of Christmas styled cake. The picture was funny, and sparked an instant good mood, yet a very slight sadness, in her. Eva waltzed out of the room, down the stairs, and into the kitchen.

"Oh, nice clothes...yeah, deffinitely not working in any type of psychology now." She said, eyeing Jareth's change of clothes and slightly new hair style. She placed the kit on the table and procceded to open it. As she began to get items out of the kit, she began to hum lightly one of her favourite songs.

"You're not insane. At least...I don't think you are. Although I must say you are being a tad overly calm about all this. Half of the people I've come across who get throw into the Underground seem to go into practical conniptions. The rest either have absolutely no sense at all or got here on purpose." Jareth remarked upon her return. "Not that I've had many visitors of late, I might add. It must be twenty some odd years at least and the last time was a diffrent kind of curcimstance than yours."

The corner of Jareth's eye twitched ever so slightly at the sudden thought of the last person he'd had dealings with from the Above.

When Eva set the bottle of pills down in front of him Jareth sighed and took up the bottle without a second thought, unscrewing the childproof cap with some difficulty one handed before he poped two or three pills into his mouth. They might have been just as much of an illusion as everything else but just imagining they'd have any kind of effect was enough.

"Tell me...Eva. Where you the kind to believe in fairy tales as a child?" The question was strange somehow given the current line of discussion but Jareth sounded sincere enough in asking.

Her humming ceased and Eva tried to contain an amused smile when Jareth's comment of her calmness.

"Well...I guess I could drop to the fetal position and burst into tears about how I must be insane. Then ramble on and on about pointless ideas of how a dream could be this clear and real. Then try to kill you with that kitchen knife over there." She glanced at the knife set by the sink, then back at Jareth with a questioning look. Then her face went back to normal, and she began lauging, shaking her head..

"No thanks. Besides, I've had my fill of tears and denial recently. There just seems to be none left in me." She said, pulling out the last of the supplies from the kit. She turned to look at him with a large cloth that was in the kit. So, another had been here? She'd try to ask him about it later...maybe it was why he sounded like he was familliar with Boston? She began making a sling for his wounded arm, trying to be gentle so she didn't hurt him, when she thought about his question.

"Fairytales? Well, my grandmother used to tell me them often, espcially fairies and wishes and such. I enjoyed them, and used to cling to the idea that they existed so I could visit them. But I expected to see them more in my dreams, still did until recently." She stated, with a small smile and a light laugh in her voice.

Jareth allowed Eva to fuss with him without much complaint even if he did wince and hiss through his teeth from time to time. When the task was all done Jareth grunted in saticfaction. "You've done very well. Thank you. Goblin first aid isn't nearly as gentle."

The Goblin King briefly imagined one of his minions trying to patch him up and smiled ever so slightly at the thought. Almost as a father smiled at the image of his children grubbily playing doctor with popsicle sticks and adhesive strips.

"You'll do well to mark the wisdom of some of those tales around here. In fact your probably better equiped than some could be under the same curcimstances. your Grandmother sounds quite the woman at anyrate and, by the way, I do appreciate you leaving the kitcken utensils where they belong. I've had quite enough of people trying to kill me today. Not that I could really blame you..."

From the way Eva was talking Jareth got the impression that Eva's grandmother had most likely passed on. The thought made him wary. To Jareth's mind nothing was ever a coincidence. Furthermore he, perhaps, felt a little irritated that he had not taken greater percaution at producing the houses illusion. There were obviously a great many feeling associated with the premises and had Jareth used a little more care he might have avoided causing the young woman any particular distress. What was done was done however. Jareth wouldn't bother to correct his mistake just yet.

Eva looked at her work and nodded to Jareth's words.

"No problem. And I'll take your word about the Goblins." She said, placing the unused things back in the kit. She looked confused when he talked of the tales. She noticed his small smile, it seemed to be the first one she'd seen on him. She smirked lightly.

"But, aren't stories just..." She trailed off, thinking. Eva shrugged, and didn't question Jareth's words any further. He knew the place better than she did. And she nearly burst out laughing once again when he mentioned his thanks for her not trying to kill him. She shook her head in amusement, and finished cleaning up.

"My Gran was quite the woman. Loved to help people whenever she could. And you couldn't blame me for trying to kill you? Nah, I have no real reason to." She grabbed onto the top of one of the empty chairs. Her eyes flicked to Jareth, then she looked towards the stairs.

"This place was how I got into the Labyrinth in the first place. Did you want me to show you where that mirror was? Or did you want to rest for a bit? We do have a few spare bedrooms in this old place." She asked, figuring the King would be interested in how someone managed to get into his Kingdom, or rest from his adventures from the day.

Eva didn't have any reason to want to maim, insult, or generally dislike him yet. Jareth thought this with some amount of twisted amusement but didn't verbalize the thought.

"Better to show me. If anything, I might be able to use the mirror to check up on a few things. Since none of this is real there shouldn't be any unusual reactions." Jareth mused.

Getting to his feet Jareth grunted and had Eva lead him to where the mirror in question was. The truth of the matter was that he could have probably done very well finding his way around the house himself being that it was his illusion, but it seemed more polite somehow to let Eva lead. Part of his charity in the present seemed largely rooted in the fact that Jareth was injured and perhaps not feeling as self indulgently confident as usual. Certainly if he had been more himself the Goblin King would have ignored Eva's presence almost completely and instead referred Hoggle to take care of the intruder and set Eva on her proper way. No. Jareth did not interact with other people lightly and if they wanted his attention they almost always had to have some kind of representative at their backs indicating his assistance or hinderence.

Granted one Sarah Williams had been a different story. In her case, Sarah had inadvertently invoked the power of the goblins who, bound by magical laws, had spewed into the Above world to take possession of what they interpreted to be an unwanted human child. Jareth had never questioned the girls ability to do so. He'd only dealt with the demands of her position after the fact and when Sarah Williams ask had been acomplished the girl had gone home and Jareth had gone back to governing his kingdom.

Eva was a different case entirely and the expectations of Jareth's involvement in her situation was unclear.

When Eva directed them to the correct part of the house it became immediately clear that the mirror that had set Eva into the Underground was the central object in the room. In fact Jareth found he instantly didn't trust it in the sense that the damn thing gave off the strange impression that it was waiting for someone to interact with it, or at least, that's what it seemed like to him.

"Well I can certainly see how this family heirloom could be a likely suspect. Granted it looks ordinary enough." Jareth muttered. "If it really is a portal like you say then that means there has to be another one somewhere belonging to somebody. Although I couldn't say who that somebody is. I don't keep any myself. They're not exactly a safe for nor useful to many people.

Jareth didn't bother getting too close to the thing at first even though it was attractive enough. "I must admit, now having seen it, I'm almost inclined not to try and touch it."

Logically the mirror was an illusion like everything else. But then hardly anything in the underground was governed by logic it seemed. A very tiny drop of doubt plagued the Goblin King just then. As if somehow he wondered in that moment just how much control he really had over the events unfolding around him.

“You can touch it all you want...” Eva stated, walking closer to it. She looked back to Jareth, with a small smirk on her face. She raised a hand and touched the mirror a few times and once more as if to validate her point.

“I touched the mirror three times back...er...home. Only twice did it swirl with pretty colours and open the portal up. “ She pulled her hand away, and turned back to Jareth. Then shrugged, and stepped away from the mirror. She studied it for a moment, than sighed.

“The way I activated it was by saying a wish. If I didn’t, it acted like an ordinary mirror.” She turned towards a few boxes that were stacked and walked towards them. She decided to leave Jareth in peace while he decided to do whatever with the mirror. She sat down at a box and opened it up, only to be blasted with dust.

“Ack, I think you out-did yourself with the house’s details Jareth.” She muttered, after a fit of coughing. Waving away the dust, she pulled out a worn looking book. When she opened it, a small smile formed on her lips. It was a photo album; very old...Eva’s parents were in it, along with a baby Eva. She flipped through the pages, her eyes stinging. She didn’t cry, she’d be damned to cry infront of anyone. Sighing she placed the book to the side, and looked through the box some more. Just old birthday cards, letters and a picture or two. She placed the things back in the box, and leaned against them. She looked around the attic.

“You know what I just realized? The stories my Gran used to tell me were amazing, and always seemed to change. She never once read them to me from a book.” She said, more to herself but she welcomed Jareth’s imput. Eva rubbed her face, and rested her head on her knees. She closed her eyes, but remained awake.

Despite Eva's open invitation to mess with the mirror as he liked Jareth still looked rather thoughtful about the idea. Then again it was important that he take advantage of his present opportunity while it still existed. The castle itself Jareth wasn't so concerned for. It's security had already been established before he'd left and there was also the added security of the hedges he'd sealed off earlier in the day. What Jareth was very concerned about, however, was the whereabouts of a certain dwarf who happened to know a great deal more about the secrets of the Labyrinth than anyone else did with the exception of Jareth of course.

Stepping closer to the mirror while half listening to Eva, Jareth gently touched its surface with the tips of his fingers of his good hand. As expected the surface did react and for about thirty seconds the reflective images blurred into a golden haze that gently illuminated the room. After that Jareth seemed to not be able to hear Eva any longer as his vision and attention was entirely dominated by a panoramic view of the Labyrinth which Jareth seemed to be able to zoom in an out of at will. For Jareth the images were as if he was in the form of the barn owl again flying across the labyrinth and investigating area as he liked but to anyone else looking the mirror had become like a moving picture screen flashing any number of images and landscapes about the Labyrinth.

Jareth was looking for Hoggle as well as looking for anything else that shouldn't have been there but in either case he found nothing. As Jareth's concern grew so did the speed of the images, one after another, faster and faster.

"Damn, damn, damn!" As the images flashed faster and faster the mirror itself began to struggle to keep up with Jareth's demands and began to quiver and hum. "That blasted dwarf is nowhere to be found!"

Jareth growled and abruptly broke his connection to the images on the mirror.

"That's either to our benefit or very much against it. Hopefully if something has happened to the putrid little worm he'll have enough sense to keep his mouth shut." Jareth back was to Eva as he struggled to get his temper back under control.

That's about when a sudden thought occurred to the the Goblin King.

"Wait." Jareth looked over his shoulder in Eva's direction as she sat curled up. His eyes had narrowed into slits. "You said "I wish"? and then the mirror activated. In order to summon me you would have had to have been more specific. You didn't invoke anyone in particular and yet you ended up here. You're wish, I presume, granted. What exactly does THAT remind you of?"

Eva's eyes flicked to Jareth when he began to let his temper rise. Her eyes saw images flashing on the mirror, each time going faster and faster. She had to look away, she was beginning to get dizzy.

She looked back to Jareth when he spoke next, and noticed the mirror was back to a calm state. The same could not be said for Jareth, and the thought nearly made her snicker. The funny feeling was soon wiped away though when he looked over at her. Eva's brows raised, and she got slightly nervous as his eyes narrowed. Her head tilted in confusion at his question, and she said the first thing that popped into her mind.

"Cinderella." She streched out her legs, and shrugged. "You know...girl makes a wish and a fairy godmother appears and makes it happen. Only in my case, the mirror was my fairy godmother." She said, looking to the mirror then back to Jareth.

"Why? Did my fairy godmother place that here so I'd find it?" Her voice was light and teasing, and she stood up and brushed the dust that was on her. Eva parted her lips, and a yawn escaped. She was tired, and placed her hands in her pockets. Her eyes fluttered shut lazily, and thought about the days events. Arriving, walk, phone call with Rodney, finding the mir-...the phone call with Rodney.

Eva's eyes flashed open, and she groaned. She had completely forgotten that he was going to be coming to stay with her in a few days.

"Perhaps you weren't exactly meant to find it." Jareth remarked with a sniff that was more like a restrained sneer. "Large Fairies sometimes don't have as much control of things as they'd like. I do...Very much...Wonder. Would you say you're grandmother's death was sudden? Unexpected even? Because you'd be surprised what can happen to some people."

Where Jareth had been trying to be mostly polite to Eva up to this point the man was sadly out of practice and as the potential possibilities began to dawn on him Jareth seemed to be calculating variables in rapid succession. He already had one bad fairy meddling in his affairs. Jareth certainly didn't want another one, no matter how potential benevolent and well intending they were, creating some kind of polarization around him. The Goblin King could only deal with so many elements at once and perhaps he was feeling a little more vulnerable than he was comfortable with just than as he began to pace with a highly worrisome look about his features while he proceeded to suddenly change up his character and snap back into the accusatory, somewhat adolescent, tone of an irate and suspicious teenager.

"It does seem like we've been having quite a little influx of meddlers around here lately." He snapped.

"Furthermore I do not like over-sized fairy nuisances leaving their paraphernalia about where unsuspecting people can stumble across them. Its not only irresponsible but potentially dangerous for anyone who doesn't know what their properly about. Well..." This time Jareth did sneer. "If you do have a Fairy connected to you I suggest you talk her into materializing as soon as possible and tell her to get you out of MY Kingdom before something regrettable happens. Trust me, at the rate things are going disaster is bound to be eminent.

Besides the fact that Jareth was practically yelling at Eva there was just the faintest hint of real alarm that had nothing and yet everything to do with the topic at hand. Fear was not an emotion Jareth handled well and he especially had difficulty cope with the possibility of something done in the past coming back round to haunt him. But if anything one of the truths of the Underground in general was the constant shifting of balances. Were there was darkness there would always be light.

On top of all that deep fatigue was definitely setting in. The Goblin King for all his vast abilities was still a man at the end of the day. A man who had just gone through a shocking ordeal from a enemy he could only vaguely comprehend while straining his magical resources and weakened constitution. Ariadne was certainly behind most of the events of the day where the Goblin King was concerned, but there was another element he was missing and for the life of him Jareth had no idea what to think. Enemies and unforeseen dangers seemed to be materializing at the most unexpected times.

There was, after all, a specific question that dominated Jareth's mind first and foremost.

Who had thrown the rock and had very nearly killed him? The problem was that per the binding magic of the Labyrinth Ariadne could not have directly been the culprit. Per the Law of the Three Sons there had to have been third party involved in the business. Someone that neither he nor Araidne had considered a viable threat to them on the bluff.

The truth was the perpetrator could have been anyone and it was in Jareth's best interest to be suspicious of everyone as a result. Particularly when strange women where popping into his territory with a beguiling willingness and ability to just...Go with the damned flow!

At this rate if Jareth wasn't careful he was bound to work himself into some kind of fit.

"For all I know of you..." Jareth threw the accusation without actually completely forming the full sentence as he glared at Eva darkly. He was having a weak moment and it showed, or so one might have imagined.

"Woah, large fairies? I was kidding!" Eva laughed into her words, only to go quiet as Jareth mention her Grandmother. Her head tilted to the side, her eyes narrowed. Was he serious? That was the only question that was running through her mind as he began to lose his temper. She stood still, arms crossed against her chest, and her eyebrows rose as he snapped at her.

"Well, maybe it wasn't an accident the mirror was left here..." She trailed off as she saw the sneer appear on Jareth's face. Listening to his next words, a scoff escaped Eva's lips almost instantly.

"What? Want me to grab some mice to help me make a dress and then get a pumpkin so the fairy can send me home in fashion? And 'your' kingdom? Could have fooled me, considering I saved your sorry a-" She took a deep breath, she wasn't going to break into a rage either. Yelling at eachother wasn't going to solve anything, and at least she was in the right mind to see that.

Eva may not have shown it, but she was afraid. When she found Jareth, she found it to almost be a stroke of luck. She wasn't the type of person to leave someone while they were injured to begin with, but the fact that she had been alone in a strange, new world helped. She decided she wasn't going to do anything to try and piss off the only person she thought could help her get home. So she swallowed her fear, and tried to act as normal as she could.

"What? You think I threw...?" Eva looked down and smiled sadly. She sighed, and shook her head in bewilderment. She looked to Jareth, ignoring the dark look her was giving her. If she honestly wanted him dead, she would have done it when he was unconscious or his back turned. It wasn't like she hadn't had the oppurtunity if that was what she wanted.

"Goodnight Jareth. Get some rest." She said the last part a bit bitterly, and she turned and walked out of the attic.

Eva walked into her room, and crawled into her sheets. She sighed deeply, inhaling the fresh scent of the covers and pillow, feeling as if she was actually home for a moment. Her eyes fluttered shut.

When Jareth's ill aimed outburst caused Eva to bitterly abandon him in the attic in favor of getting some much needed sleep, Jareth remained where he was for several minutes with a grave turned down kind of expression on his face. There was no mistaking how badly he'd just handled his unique situation and even if the man refused to admit it to anyone else, Jareth knew privately that he'd made a serious ass of himself in front of Eva and possibly hurt her feelings.

Now entirely alone with in the attic room Jareth sank down onto the nearest object that would hold his weight and dropped his head, somewhat gingerly, nearly between his knees. His injuries aside the magician once again felt a wave of abject exhaustion sweep through him. Even when at his best the core of the matter was that the Goblin King felt tired and the problems that were lately blossoming from every angle within his domain were exacerbating the issue. For a few moments a feeling of severe doubt consumed him and quickly turned over into generalized anger and self resentment. It was in times like this where Jareth had nothing but his deep sense of duty and unwavering resolve to see him through to the new morning.

He reminded himself how he had come to be in the position of guardian over the castle, the Goblin City, and vast Labyrinth that surrounded it. The day he forgot what this was all really about was the same day the entire Labyrinth feel under new ownership and Jareth either was dead or in exile. Leaving on his own accord was out of the question and nothing more than an interesting fantasy to play out in his head. The more he thought about it, the more he pulled himself together and promised not to come apart again. If nothing else it was clear he wasn't thinking straight. A solid rest, or at least, the best he could get under the circumstances was in order. Tonight was about regrouping and tomorrow was about formulating a plan. The rest Jareth would deal with in stride.

Furthermore, although Jareth couldn't claim to know Ariadne's exact plans her motivations seemed clear enough. There was only one reason for anyone to go to as much effort as Ariadne was going to and that was to get ones hands on the Castle at the center of the Labyrinth. Ariadne was just the present one of many before her who had at one time or another sought the power the Castle housed and represented. Granted, the last incident had been long ago and most of the details regarding the business had been lost or forgotten by time and indifference but that certainly didn't mean the events hadn't happened.

Jareth knew the finer details of the business because he had been there, in part, to see some of the later events unfold first hand. Among other things it was an undeniable aspect of his family, their history, and his inheritance. Jareth had never been one to shirk the responsibilities that came with being part of something that was greater than himself and a matter of heritage, but that didn't mean he didn't greatly resent the legacy that had been left to him. Jareth sighed then and set his head right again as he glanced towards the small window along one wall of the attic. As the night progressed the double moons began to rise as if one was the mirror image of the other moving in unison.

"I have done everything ever asked of me and more, and yet, I know if you were here right now to see me in this moment you'd say it hasn't been enough. Well, its going to have to be, isn't it Father, or else everything might as well slip away like sand through ones fingers." Jareth muttered in a slight hissing fashion under his breath in a mixture of Gaelic and English.

Apparently Eva wasn't the only one turning in with an air of bitterness, fresh and sharp to lull them into the darkness of unconsciousness.

Eva's Dream - Labyrinth - Night

Image

The night pressed on throughout the Labyrinth and while some parts were quite active this time of night most people were very much asleep in their proper beds. Thanks to Jareth's handy work it appeared Eva too was destined to sleep in her bed even if it was nothing more than an illusion. Eventually even Jareth did retire for the night although it was unclear exactly where he ended up sleeping given that he was just as likely to sleep sitting up in a chair than laying down on a sofa or bed. As far as the house went everything seemed to be serene with only the staccato ticking of the hall way clock or the smaller time keeper on the night table. At this point it had to be getting up towards midnight and when the hour finally did come the clock in the upper hall gently chimed the hour.

Meanwhile up in the attic that was now without occupation, the mirror Eva had directed Jareth to looked ordinary enough. Ordinary if you ignored the fact that the mirror had stopped reflecting the objects in the attic and now resembled moonlight on glass smooth water.

As the clock in the hall continued to sound the surface of the mirror began to move as if a drop of water had fallen into a clear pool causing the mirrors glass to ripple gently once, then twice, then a third time. All in secession with increasing effect. The next thing to be heard, if there had been anyone to hear it was the strong fluttering sound of bird wings and the faint tinkle of small bells. After that, just as the clock in the hall finished striking the hour something about the size and color of a white barn owl emerged from the mirror to take a topsy turvy turn about the attic before it disappeared down the the hall.

"Eva...Eva dearest, you need to wake up for a moment." Whatever had emerged from the mirror had transformed into a shrouded kindly woman who was currently leaning over the left of Eva's bed she was curled sleeping in.

The woman calling gently to Eva was draped from head to foot in a kind of iridescent fabric that was not exactly transparent yet not quite passably solid either. It just sort of glimmered and waved like moon beams on water and her robes were inlaid with what looked like archaic spirals of sliver thread. Miraculously the material managed to capture and reflect every beam of light in the room causing a sort of gentle glittering effect. While she spoke the woman with the familiar voice reached out to set aside a lock if Eva's hair so that she could stroke the younger woman's cheeck with the exposed part of her gloved index finger.

Her hands were slim with long beautiful fingers encased in delicate looking open fingered gloves the color of baked earth that disappeared up under her sleeves. And her face was framed in a great white-blue cowl that hid the thick braid of sliver hair down her back. Yet in spite of all her otherworldly-ness the older woman seemed to embody everything that was warm, comforting, and familiar.

Eva's body gently pulled her mind into focus, and a soft sigh escaped her lips. After a moment of battling with the sweet temptation of falling back into the darkness and peaceful sleep, she opened her dark eyes. She was still, looking out the window and observing the two moons. Her mind was moving slowly at the moment, and it took her a minute to remember she wasn't really home and why she was seeing double moons.

'Labyrinth. Jareth. Right...' She thought lazily, and bit her lip. It was at that moment where she noticed a shadow that wasn't hers. Eva thought it was Jareth at first, until she felt the stroke of a finger on her cheek. Holding in a breath, her head turned lightly towards the unkown figure near her. Her movements held the feeling of being underwater, slightly slow and heavy...

'I'm dreaming.' The thought came to her almost instantly, and she didn't argue with it. She was experiencing a quite lucid dream, and she focused back towards the figure. When Eva saw her face, the breath left her throat quickly, and she sat herself up. Her arms wrapped themselves around the old woman, and Eva's eyes stung and tears threatened to spill. She pulled back with a soft smile on her face. Although the woman was dressed in a very odd fashion, she recognized the face nearly right away. Afterall, if you had lived with the same face for nearly your whole life, you would too.

Eva watched as the light from the moons danced on the fine clothing, and her hands dropped onto her lap. She looked back at the familliar face, and grinned.

"Hi Grams." Her voice was soft, and slightly uncertain as to why her Grandmother was in her dream. But she wasn't about to complain.

"Oh...Hello my beauty. Its so good to hug you again." Eva's grandmother embraced her tightly and with all the love grandma's were famous for as she pushed the tears away from Eva's heavy eyes with he edge of her glove. "I'm so sorry dear. I really didn't intend to leave you so suddenly like I did. I must admit it was all quite a surprise even to me."

At that the woman known in life as Penny settled down next to her granddaughter on the bed. "I had written a letter to you in the event something like this happened but I'm afraid it might have been mis-delivered by the postman."

The letter Penny had written had been mis-delivered and was currently sitting in the possession of Toby Williams for the moment.

"At any rate, I see you've come across the attic mirror and have now crossed into the Underground. I'm sure my dear that its all probably been very confusing for you and perhaps a bit frightening. Again, this is largely my fault. I should have been preparing you for all this from the time you were a little girl. I did try, I just didn't quite succeed at it." Penny softly patted Eva's hands.

"Unfortunately there's not alot of time to explain things the way I'd like. So I'm going to have to condense the facts until we meet again. The thing you need to understand is that while this is a dream in many ways its also a very precise matter of fact. You see Eva for lack of a better explanation you might say I'm something of a fairy godmother just like in the stories I used to tell you as a child. Before I decided to go to Boston and make a life there I lived here in the Underground. In fact I was born here. The Labyrinth could be considered my original home and now that I've lived out my second life in Boston I've returned home and just in the nick of time I might add." Grandma Penny explained.

"In some ways I wish you weren't here Eva. There is a great deal of trouble brewing in the Labyrinth and in the Underground respectively. I hate to imagine you put in danger. But," Penny sighed. "One can't always plan for everything and when it comes to this other world there isn't such a thing as coincidence. If my magic mirror brought you here it is because that is where you are meant to be for the time being."

"I also see you've met Jareth which, under the circumstances is very fortunate indeed. I know he can be something of an ass. He always was of a temperamental character. At the core I assure you he's a good man and i must admit that I am slightly comforted you've found each other. Jareth needs practice interacting with regular people again and there are things he can tell you that I can't. Eva you are part of a legacy that few people could scarcely imagine. There's so much I could and should tell you...Oh but like I said there isn't alot of time. You might have to find some of the answers on your own. What I can promise you is that we will be reunited again dear and when that time comes it will be such a joy to see you again and explain everything. For now I can only appear to you in the middle realm of sleep and my time is limited. I'm afraid my abilities are a tad limited as well. I'm only a country fairy-type after all and not nearly packing as much punch as someone like Jareth is. That's all the more reason you need to stick with him for as long as safety possible. Once he understands who you are he will fully assist you in anyway he can." Penny explained.

"Oh, and another thing, hold tight to that ring you have Eva and any other little trinkets you might have directly on your person. Objects brought into the Underground tend to take on useful application after a time. The smaller, the more potent. That ring in particular might become very important someday." Penny added.

"Now, my dearest one, I have just enough time left to answer one or two questions. I know this is alot to take in but before you ask anything I need you to really think about the questions before you ask them. I might not be able to speak with you again for some time and knowledge is one of the greatest powers you can have to protect and defend yourself with here."

Eva pulled in her legs and crossed them willingly to make room for Penny. Eva watched her intently, hardly believing what was going on. She nodded when Penny spoke of the letter, and tried to think back if there was anything she had missed in her mail. She couldn't think of anything and knew she never got it. So it must have been sent some other place, and she wondered what the reaction would have been of that person when they opened it. Eva internally sighed, of all times to mix up an address...

Her eyes shifted to her lap when Penny patted her hands, and a small smile formed on her lips. "Don't worry about it Grams, you helped me deal with this place more than you know. I even think Jareth is slightly unnerved at how calm I am at times." Her smile turned into a grin, thinking of some of Jareth's reactions and faces from the day. Eva realized he had tried to be kind to her, despite the situation that she was basically trespassing. And that someone had attempted to kill him. Biting her lip, she noted that she may have been a bit harsh on Jareth earlier when she was awake, and made a mental note to apologize to him when she woke up. She turned her thoughts back to Penny.

"Yes well, you know me...always love an adventure." She said rolling her eyes in a joking manner. If she was meant to be here, then she would stay for as long as was needed.

"Glad we found eachother? It was a fluke really...I helped him in a time of...need." Eva said carefully. Jareth seemed like a man with a lot of pride, and she wasn't sure how he'd react to her telling someone of what happened.

Eva was looking at her ring when Penny said she had to leave soon. Eva nodded, and sighed as she looked up to her Grandmother. "If you're a fairy...does that mean I'm not one hundred percent human then?" She asked slowly, thoughts running through her mind. She shook her mind clear, and gave one last hug to Penny before she had to leave.

"Hm? Well I suppose that's something of a matter of opinion, at least in this place. The point of the matter is that you were born in what many here call the Above. Your parents were very much human and during my lifetime in Boston I was more or less a human as well. At the very worst, my dear, I would say that you are a regular person who simply has a little vein of magic running through you. Everyone does, really. And those on my side of the family in particular." Grandma Penny reassured her.

"You are quite capable of being anything you set your heart on Eva. Its true that now that your here in the Underground where magic is apart of the status quo, you could make quite a bit more of yourself than you could staying in Boston. But there will always be a measure of choice involved." Penny said gently before kissing her granddaughter on the forehead loudly.

"I will confide that I always secretly hoped someone of a newer generation might pick up on the family trade. Your mother, although a wonderfully warm and compassionate woman, wasn't really inclined. Then again its not very unusual for these things to skip a generation or two sometimes." At that a bell seemed to tinkle off in the distance.

"Well, I'm afraid that is my cue." Penny hugged her granddaughter again with all the warmth and love she could muster. "Remember Eva, when in doubt look inside yourself and you will always find what you need. I promise you will never be in want for friends here or assistance and while you might not see me I will never be very far away. I love you all ways my dearest child. Now lay down and shut your eyes. I promise when you wake up everything will seem brighter in the morning." Penny waited for Eva to do as she asked before she rose up from the bed and preceded to tuck her granddaughter in as she always had when Eva was a child.

She then began to hum the faintest of lullabys which did not fully disappear until Eva had fully drifted back to sleep. It was only then that Penny slowly backed from the room, her image fading as the sound of bird wings fluttering filled the air.

Eva let out a sigh of relief when she heard she was human, with a small side of magic. She nodded in understanding when Penny spoke to her, absorbing the words. She frowned slightly when she heard the bells, she understood that Penny had to leave. She settled back in bed, laughing slightly as her grandmother tucked her in. She felt as if she was twelve once again. Eva laid back, and almost instantly felt a wave of drowsiness. A soft smile formed on her lips when her hears received the tune of the old lullaby.

"Love you too.." Eva said before her eyes shut, and her thoughts seemed to disappear. She allowed herself to be lulled back into the darkness of sleep.

Labyrinth - Dawn

Eva stirred lightly, and woke up. But she didn't move right away, she laid there with her eyes closed. Her sense of smell could still pick up her grandmother's perfume, barely. She smiled and opened her eyes and streched, that sleep had been much needed. The perfume smell seemed to disappear after she sat up, as if to only let her know her grandmother had been with her. Eva flipped the covers off of herself, and stood up. She grabbed her shoes and walked out of her room. She decided to leave Jareth be, he needed his rest, and headed downstairs. As she walked into the living room, she noticed the sun wasn't quite up yet. So Eva sat on the couch and threw her shoes on the ground near her. She looked out the window from where she sat, and watched as the morning sun gave the garden outside a beautiful glow.

"Pretty." She mummered to quietly to herself in approval. There she sat quietly, peacefully and enjoyed the silence and view.
