December 24, 2013: A nuclear bomb wipes out half of America, killing at least nine hundred billion.
December 25, 2013: At least twenty million bodies are recovered.
January 12, 2024: World War III begins.
February 21, 2026: Nuclear was wipes out most of Africa.
March 2, 2028: The Global Asylum of England is founded.
March 2, 2029: England is hit by a nuclear bomb which wipes out a large portion of life.
December 25, 2032: The world is struck by an asteroid allegedly the size of China (not exactly that large, but it was a nice size). 89% of life is killed instantly, 5% died later, and the rest remained in a nuclear-tainted world.
What happened?
After the near extinction of humans, the remaining (about thirty two million, as estimated) try to survive. Most of the remaining are severely contaminated by radiation. However, the Global Asylum of England inadvertently created what became a natural shield. Radiation has seeped into the building, and most of the residents have signs of that, though all of them are lucky survivors of the Christmas 2032 impact.
However, everything isn't as nice as it seems. The inhabitants are still prisoners, and they still struggle to scrape out an existence. They are constantly manhandled and mistreated by bored guards, and most of them have been in solitary confinement since the impact. After a mass breakout, the remaining government (all of the nations had merged into the Global Party) rounded up all the prisoners and intentionally implanted them with not only radiation, but also several movement detectors, shock receptors, and the worst were killed.
But now, with less than one million humans left, the asylum has become more barbaric than ever. The guards live in luxury in the remains of their break room, and even have limited music. Meanwhile, the outsiders, who are those so severely infected by radiation that a touch could probably cause major problems, are locked away in an asylum only miles away. However, after the asylum burned down, the outsiders began slowly leaking into the English asylum, forcing global lockdown of all areas. Thus, the only food is supplied by what is known as "scrubbed" delivery, which is basically food which has been injected with so many chemicals that it causes worse side effects than radiation. After that failed the government returned to delivering tainted food.
In the solitary confinement cells, blood, sweat, and tears have combined to form what is known as the cavern of death. The series of tunnels has been carved out by prisoners over the years, and despite the many skeletons and rotting corpses remaining in the tunnels from cave-ins and failed escapes, people still use them. Though some have been taken, and many lie in long-dead, white fingers of bones beneath the asylum, every cell has an inscription, coded or hidden by the blood of the tunnel maker. These writings, once deciphered, reveal the area in which the prisoner's map of the tunnels should be, though it's not always as easy as it seems to find the map...
So now, a few of the outsiders as well as the native dwellers of the asylum (most of whom descended from the survivors), and the world is basically locked down for what appears to be eternity. In reply, rebellions aren't uncommon. What we focus on is not only the life of the asylum, but the life of those who leave it as well...

OOC Notes
After he was finished his chili, he set it down on the table as the loud Clack! of all of the computer-controlled cell doors unlocked, and the doors swung automatically open by means of some wild computer technology.
OOC Notes
"Ugh...nasty.." she muttered, pressing her bandaged hands against the table and glancing around the area nervously, as if expecting to get jumped at any moment. She'd edged her way into the large room but a few minutes later, and felt rather...exposed on her own. You could never tell what some of the people were likely to do.
She pushed the tray away, feeling the food doing somersaults in her digestive tract, and leaned against the table, absent-mindedly watching the young man known as Talon. How on earth did he manage to keep it down? He had to have some sort of iron stomach.
"I-impressive..." she mumbled.
OOC Notes
After a few moments, he simply flipped the page and continued reading, his brow shooting up every now and again, only for him to mentally shrug and then flip the page.

She sprang to her feet, the old bandages leaving bloody flecks on the floor as she edged over, in an almost comedic attempt to look like she was doing it casually. She really wanted someone to talk to...starting to feel rather...avoided by people around the asylum of late. Being on her own was not a state she liked as it meant she was in the company of her own thoughts...and that was never pleasant.
Sidling over, she leaned forward,s tilting her head curiously to try and catch some glimpse of the book.
"Er...uh..what'cha reading?" she asked, trying to put on her most sociable and least frightening-sounding tone.
"Is..is it good?"
OOC Notes
OOC Notes
"Yes, I believe this is Sword in the Stone, I was trying to read this before, but someone lost it in their cell. They eventually found it...after the dude died, but whatever. This place is already haunted enough, a ghost book's not going to hurt a thing," he muttered casually, his eyes taking in the words before he simply flipped the page. In response to Jae, he nodded, signalling that he at least knew she existed.
OOC Notes
(Is there a limit or minimum of how much we are supposed to write?)
OOC Notes
The talk of ghosts bothered her a bit. She'd heard a few stories about supposed hauntings in the place, though she could never tell if they were real, or just the workings of deranged minds. She certainly couldn't trust what she saw, as interference in the visual centres of her brain often popped up in the form of odd hallucinations, and she'd trained herself to try and pick out what didn't belong and to disregard it...though when the female nearby started sprouting ears she started to call that into question. She decided not to comment in case it was another visual disturbance, as she didn't want to start screaming about cat ears and scare off the wheelchair man, who seemed at least to be tolerating her up to now...and really that was all Cadwyn required from a person. If they didn't scream at her to leave them alone, she counted them as a decent sort.
"...how would you get a sword into a stone? That would...would really damage the blade..." she mused.
"...seems like a silly thing t-to do...if....if you ask me.."

Talon sighed, raising a brow and flipping the page, wincing slightly as his leg trembled once more. "Well, I do believe it was placed in there magically, bewitched by Merlin to only come out for King Arthur," he said, his eyes still locked on the book as he flipped the page, taking another hoarse breath. "Anyway, I only know because I like classics like these...only thing that still works in my cell..." Talon muttered, sighing heavily.
With this, he flipped the page once more, his eyes flashing from word to word. Ironically, when he was born, he was supposedly mentally deficient, which was about as far from him as you could get. After a moment, he looked back at Cadwyn. "Anyway, I don't know. Hm, why did Achilles just get everything but his ankle dipped? Why not just flip him around and re-dunk him, hm? It's a story, doesn't really have to have logic," he replied, grinning and winking.
OOC Notes
"I don't know...people in stories are all a bit...stupid. Like that story I read once when I was smaller about the er...the red girl...Red Hood Girl or something...she thought some big toothy animal was her grandmother. How could you make that mistake? They didn't even look the same...unless the grandmother was very hairy..I've seen people like that...but I don't think there were mutants in those stories...I don't know..." she replied, digressing a little.
She read when she could find things, though she often didn't concentrate for long enough to get through something. She knew a few of the stories though, stories about the world when it was something different...though a lot of that seemed so alien to her that she had trouble even imagining it. It was a world away from the grim reality of every day...more than a world sometimes, it seemed. The idea that heroes in shiny armor were going to come and save everybody had appealed to her at one point, but by then she knew better.
OOC Notes
"Anyway, I still know some of them. They were from way before this...some people still know 'em..." Talon muttered. "But most don't anymore... Really, it's a shame in my opinion, because the stories are a link to our roots...well...um...sort of. Maybe I don't want to be linked with some of those people, but at least they didn't nuke the world..." he grumbled darkly.
OOC Notes
OOC Notes
"...maybe they were all just foolish like the stories before the war....why else would you launch bombs that burn everything?" she replied quietly, gazing up at the ceiling.
"....I don;t know...I try to imagine what it's like occasionally...but I find it hard...even with the stories. I guess most can't think of it at all....or maybe they don't want to....don;t want to think about it because they'd never be able to live in the now knowing what they used to have and threw away..."
She suddenly blinked and shook her head, laughing nervously and tugging her sleeve.
"...haha...sorry..I'm rambling..."
OOC Notes
"Ironically...I know that a band called The Beatles was still popular back then, even though they were all long dead. Their songs were mostly focused on bringing peace, but I guess no one listened to them with that in mind. I used to have some of their music...my Dad gave me some albums before he was hung...but that's forever ago... Who knows where they went? Probably ruined or stolen by guards," he muttered, sighing heavily and growling in pain as his chest began to spasm. "Who knows? Maybe people were supposed to do this...I heard from somewhere that there's a reason for everything...probably another of the dead nurses that used to take care of me..." he mumbled through gritted teeth,
OOC Notes
"I can't really think of a reason though...I don't think anything has really gotten better...I don't know...I guess I don't know enough to say..but it....it sounded a lot better then." she mused, shrugging her shoulders, before realizing something was wrong with Talon. He appeared to be in pain.
"..er..are you...are you alright?" she asked, leaning forwards, concern crossing her face.
That would be awfully bad luck, she found someone to talk to and they dropped dead within minutes of initiating a conversation. She certainly hoped that wasn't going to happen. Of course you were hard pressed to find someone healthy. The guards seemed more hardy with the better facilities they received, but no-one was what you'd call well, the price of all the radioactive particles burning around in their bodies. Some people were worse than others though.
OOC Notes
Teeli rotated her neck slowly, taking a glimpse of the conversationalists over her shoulder. Her eyebrows perked up and immediately narrowed. Hmmm, it was the wheel boy... She had studied him a few times before in the precious two-hour moderated "social time" they were given. Since he was indeed a male and therefore kept in the Male Ward, she knew little about him. Though his chair was of utmost interest to her. So many cogs, nuts, bolts, and springs... She imagined herself elbow deep in the dis-assemblage. The side of her mouth curled up as her eyes traced the machine. Her lips parted as she let out a shivering sigh. Slowly rotating her head forwards, she continued to listen to the conversations around her as her headache slowly dulled.
OOC Notes
After a few moments, he finally closed the book, marking his place by ripping off a shred of a tattered shirt shoved into a side compartment of his chair. "But as far as I know...people are definitely not going forwards on the evolutionary food chain..." he added, sighing heavily as he shoved the book back in place.
OOC Notes
"N-no...I don't think so..so many mutations now...it's kinda scary...I saw a baby b-born here with no mouth once...made me feel lucky..imagine having no mouth...though at least you wouldn't ever have to taste the chilli..." she mumbled, rubbing her bandaged hands together as she followed Talon's nod to catch sight of Teeli, frowning a little and shuffling her feet somewhat on the floor.
"I d-don't really know what it's like outside here..but I've heard people outside want to get in...because...becuase it's so bad....don't think I really wanna go out there..."
OOC Notes
With this, as if to emphasize his point, he vomited once more, frowning as he noticed traces of blood in his vomit. "Ugh...not this again... Didn't they just vaccinate me for this?" he grumbled, backing away from the vomit and frowning. "Sorry... Meh, probably worse things that could happen..."
OOC Notes
Throwing up blood was really not a good sign though, and it made her frown and look over in his direction. She edged back over after a few moments when she was reasonably sure he wasn't going to do it again.
"Hm..that is....that's not very good..." she mumbled.
"....could be the food...it was really nasty today...I didn't eat much...or..or maybe the vaccines are bad...if they were actually vaccines..."
OOC Notes
With this, he sighed and closed his eyes, slumping over a bit as his breathing faded into a faint wheezing. "Maybe I'm just having one of those off days, who knows? We're all pretty prone to random infection here...just look at some of the records...causes of death..." he muttered, his voice a bit weaker as he pulled out a tattered old booklet containing some old prisoner records. Without thinking, he randomly opened it and read some quick information. "Age of death, 15. Cause of death was intestinal infection and possible homicide," he grumbled shoving the booklet back into place.
OOC Notes
"....I...I suppose..I get sick sometimes...mostly get headaches...and..and nosebleeds." she replied, before lifting up her bandaged hands.
"....also these....I don't really..take the b-bandages off anymore...I don't want to know what my hands look like...don't want to see...just wanna...forget about it."
She guessed that probably wasn't very sensible...but then again there was precious little that she could actually do about in anyway. Medical supplies were few and far between. She guessed the guards had them...but she didn't really have anything the guards wanted, so wasn't all that likely to get anything. The state of her hands wasn't really their problem.
OOC Notes
"Who knows, though? It's pretty much one of those 'social status' things...it all depends..." he said, fumbling with the controls on his chair, relaxing slightly as the chair slowly, somewhat jerkily rotated so that he was leaning back a bit more.

Re: [OOC] Mortalitas
I was thinking of creating a character, I've never done that before. Any advice?
I was thinking of a character who had very bad eye sight/almost blind and was a kind of crazy religious type. Asteroid was the fist of god or something along those lines. Not really sure about the religious thing, I'm not religious so maybe best to avoid.
thanks,
Adam
Re: [OOC] Mortalitas
I have watched House, didn't really have him in mind when I made Crane, I just needed a Doctor that would fit in in a particularly unpleasant laboratory, and she just became fun to use.
Re: [OOC]
Yeah, don't worry, it takes a while to get used to the layout of this place. Like I said, if any of you need help with something, feel free to message me, a designer, a moderator, a mentor, or an administrator. The staff are always happy to help out with whatever you need. :)
Re: [OOC]
Dr Crane is up. =D
Not the most friendly character I ever wrote...for some reason my Doctor character always end up awfully bad tempered.
Re: [OOC]
Re: [OOC]
If there's anything I do or write that isn't up to par or done in the right way, please feel free to yell at me! :D I've been trying to read a bunch of the articles written in the Academy section, but the vast quantities can be overwhelming! I figure, I should just try to jump in.
On the note of questions,
I was looking over the info trying to see what year it was exactly. I got the feeling that we were children of prisoners - so I'm guessing a couple of decades after the asylum was founded? Is that kind of the right time-line?
Re: [OOC] Mortalitas
Re: [OOC]
Well I'll just use this to ask, have been thinking about throwing another character or two in as asylum staff types, and I was wondering would a Doctor character fit into the structure? It's been a while since I use my grumpy old Doc Crane, and the asylum just screams to be the sort of place Crane would get hired.
Also tempted to put in a character the deals in contraband, though not sure how realistic that is in the setting.
Re: [OOC] Mortalitas
Please use the OOC chat for all OOC conversation, which brings us to the subject...we do have a chat, so feel free to use it to roleplay! So, now that we're done with all of that formal stuff, let's get to the point.
First of all, remember that this roleplay is character-driven, so what you do affects the plot. That means to choose your actions carefully. As for other issues, please try to use grammar, and make sure to be a little active! Anyway, besides this, enjoy the roleplay. Just a few quick notices. As for any other things, just have fun. :D
