Brutus has been Kain's rival for as long as Kain can remember (and he can't). Brutus is a high-ranking shinigami in the Underworld & will stop at nothinguntil he kills his opponent once a battle starts. He has always thought of Kain as a worthy foe & challenged him constantly. However, when he heard that Kain had been cast down, he sought his chance to finally kill him. However, he also took notice of the war & began an onslaught with a powerful battalion of demons behind him.
