Jake "Honō no ko"

Spirit of the Eastern Frontier

0 · 2,083 views · located in The Snapa-verse

a character in “Nomad Clan”, as played by DarKnight36

Description

Image

"When you're standing on the edge, looking out over that beautiful, deadly desert... Really nothing else quite like it."

Name: Jake
Sex: Male
Age: 22

Physical Description: Jake stands tall and lanky over others, but his build belies a physical power few can match. His skin is deeply tanned and his body has many scars from battles with other clans, monsters, and the elements themselves. Most would consider him rather handsome, with sky blue eyes and a ready smile full of straight white teeth.
Clothing: Jake wears a suit that many would consider unbearable. It is dark and almost fully covers him from the sun. Designs crisscross the front and back of his long coat. His boots are solid and weathered. Strapped to his waist are his sword, pistol, and a strange metallic rod that extends with a flick of his wrist. Jake's most noticeable feature is his broad-rimmed hat, reminiscent of a time long passed...
Height: 205 cm / 6'9"
Weight: 190 lbs
Skin Color: Dark brown to pale brown where the sun hasn't tanned him (which are very few places)
Hair Color: Ruddy brown
Eye Color: Sky Blue

Occupation: Self-proclaimed cowboy and adventurer
History/Bio: Born from the ashes of two rival clans and a legendary love tryst he refuses to talk about, Jake was named "Honō no ko", Child of Flame, and sentenced to die by the remaining members of the Vena and Dera clans. Thrown into the White Ruin, Jake somehow survived the ensuing storm that buried the warring clans beneath its sands and left him at the doorstep of a wandering mercenary, hired to fight in the war. Wounded and battered, the mercenary took Jake in and raised him as his own. Although his adopted father died many years ago, Jake still honors his memory, wandering the depths of the Qafar, calling himself "The Cowboy."

Home Town: None, born within the White Ruin
Native Clan: Vena & Dera clans
Population: Extinct
Settlements: None
Location: Sea of Sand, far east reaches of the Ariket

Personality: Fun-loving and optimistic, Jake tends not to take things very seriously. He seems fascinated with the desert, and rumor has it he's explored more corners of it than anyone else. Jake enjoys loose companionship, but grows uncomfortable with close relationships. He is kind but distant, going out of his way to help those in need if he can. He is very good at remaining detached.
Fears and Desires: Jake fears nothing but that he will not reach his most absurd goal: to conquer the White Ruin and make it his kingdom.

Equipment and Weapons: Jake carries a sword and pistol forged and formed by his father. Although the sword seems like a common weapon, it holds an interesting secret. Jake also carries a rod which extends and locks from a piece about six inches long to a staff six feet long. He often uses this in non-lethal situations. His suit is made of interlocking armor pieces and sturdy material threaded from several different kinds of monster. He claims it is waterproof, although there seems to be no purpose to this.
Styles and Abilities: Jake prefers not to fight seriously, although he enjoys getting in healthy brawls and defending women's honor. He has a lot of experience fighting monsters, and bandits.

So begins...

Skullivan squinted at Jake. "We survive through, like, unity. We're all... little cogs in the empire. Here it's every man for himself."

Mirova hummed at the scene before her. "Don't die," She said unhelpfully to Aisha.

"Every man for himself."

Dustin frowned. That didn't sit right with him. Perhaps the clanless, like Xaverius, who trudged along near the tail end of the caravan, understood that concept. Dustin didn't agree with it. There was strength in numbers, strength in having many people to do several things at once. Rather than focus on a single task at a time in one's lonesome you had a whole community working together on many different things all for the sole purpose of your survival. It worked. It had been working since clans were founded.

"The desert promises death," the Kassellander stated to Jake the Cowboy-Ninja. Or Samurai, whichever it was. "And that's a fact."

The sun lowered down to kiss the sandy horizon, turning the sky into a fiery orange around the group who trundled along among the lengthening shadows of the dunes towering above them in sections. They mostly stuck to low ground because of the rusty wagon that rattled along. Climbing the dunes wasn't exactly a meager task, especially for exhausted, lost wanderers pulling along a cart, but Bohdana had a particular trick for doing it without exerting much energy.

Boh had separated herself from the group after the small argument she had a part in. She felt frustrated and sad - the sight of the sunset not helping with her mood. Just a day earlier, at this very time, she had lost her beloved uncle and her only remaining family to the sands. How could he, she thought angrily while tears pricked her eyes, how could he leave her like this. Surrounded by a group of strangers, one of which had attempted to kill her, the other smashing her only reason to keep going into the grains. Most frustratingly of all; leaving her with an impossible task.

She kicked the sand bitterly, watching the fog of yellow drift off into the wind. How could he leave her like this. It wasn't fair.

A thought popped into her head as she caught sight of Jake up ahead, shadowed by a particularly large dune beside them. She stopped for a moment and pulled a strange sort of metal board attached to her pack beside the rifle. In a swift movement Boh had twisted a small Taqa from her pouch into a little hole on one of the ends and in an instant the sand-glider powered to life.

The girl stepped onto the sand-glider while slinging her pack over her shoulders and, without speaking to the others, drifted upside the large dune of sand. As the wind blew her hairs over her face she looked out from the top, seeking a vantage point.

Almost instantly, Boh spotted the Meltsand camp in the distance.

Hundreds - perhaps thousands of tents dotted a vast expanse of sand in obscured patterns, but most notably she recognized metal vehicles and some other types of strange contraptions - catapults, batarams, large guns that looked like the smaller one Mirova carried. War machines. The whole place was like a military encampment. Bohdana swallowed and squinted down to the group below the dune, her young voice being carried in the wind, "Clan Meltsand is just up ahead!"

"OH SWEET," Skullivan exclaimed loudly, a goofy grin on his face as he began to scramble up the join to Boh and Jake's vantage point. "Let's go get healed!"

"Shut up, Skullivan," Mirova hissed as she pushed herself out the wagon, having apparently picked up Skullivan's name in their journey. "Quiet. Clan Meltsand are... tricky."

"Don't like other clans neither. Seem to think all clans are friends with Aklar. I'd probably advice against mentioning if you're from a clan..." Bohdana glanced at Skullivan warily as the group met up with them at the top, "Or that you're a Wetlander. Don't know what they think about Wetlanders, nothin' good I suspect."

The young girl glanced to the stoic Jake suspiciously, lowering her voice slight, "If his so-called 'connection' backfires on us, act like you're clanless. Peacekeepers. Don't start fights, don't mess with their business. Get in, trade what we want, get out. It's how Andle did things with people we weren't exactly friends with, it should work with these guys."

"I don't have a connection, they just know who I am," Jake said, surveying the camp below. He frowned. "Don't do anything until I scout things out, this looks a lot like a war camp, and war camps... aren't friendly at the best of times."

The cowboy glanced at the others. "If things go bad, head east along that edge, I'll try and divert them west. I can't guarantee you won't take heat but..." He shrugged. "Let's just hope things don't go bad."

Not waiting for an answer, Jake slid down the large dune, and jogged steadily around to the west, skirting the edge of the camp. Like a ghost, Jake noted the location of sentries around the camp. Coming up to a large sand dune, Jake took a moment to catch his breath, then rose to the height of the dune. The sun silhouetted him from behind, casting a large shadow that reached to the edge o the camp.

Jake stood there, counting out the seconds, then turned and slid back down the sand, walking around the edge towards the camp again. By the time he reached the flattened sand where the camp lay, the guard was waiting for him.

Three men stood in an uneven line, two wielding spears of a kind and the third wearing black gloves and markings that designated him as a magician, a user of meltsand.

Jake wasn't bothered by this. He'd expected as much. He glanced covertly at the dune rise where the others remained. They might just move east without him, that would be a smart option. But they didn't strike him as particularly "smart" about some things.

Jake stopped about five feet from the men, and saluted, two fingers to the tip of his hat.

"I am the Hono no Ko," Jake said matter-of-factly.

"He's crazy," Elsie muttered, watching Jake make his way to the Meltsander's camp. She watched as the three men approached him and felt herself stiffen, this was it. He was done for, and they'd all have to find some way around this aggressive clan. She agreed with what Boh had said earlier, keeping a low profile and not letting it be known that they were part of any clan. However, one look around told her that all of them claiming to not be in a Clan would only make Clan Meltsand laugh. So many people traveling together who weren't part of a Clan? It was extremely uncommon. "We should just go," She started, "There's got to be some other way around them. Let the Cowboy samurai do what he wants, I, for one, don't want any part of anything to do with these vile Meltsanders..." He voice broke as she said the name. She cleared her throat hoping no one had noticed, "We are better off finding another path to the East," she pointed to an area they could use to go around the camp. "Yeah, it may take longer but, it might be in our best interest," as she spoke, she looked back to where she'd seen Jake, more men, and some women were standing behind the spear wielding guards, all appeared to be itching for some kind of fight, but no one moved. She could see Jake was speaking, and she hoped he was truly on their side, and not selling them all out to Clan Meltsand.

The warriors of Clan Meltsand stood and watched as Jake stepped forward, their eyes narrowing as tthe Cowboy-Ninja stating his title before them. The burning war-machines and metallic contraptions of the clan surrounded him, spears and fire-blasters in hand of the warriors as the awkward silence of the interaction droned on.

From the top of the dune Skullivan squinted. "Did it... did it work?" He whispered, glancing over to his companions. At his words the camp below erupted into chaos, the warriors immediately smashing Jake's legs in with finely crafted metallic clubs. Skullivan gasped as the warriors piled onto their guide, repeatedly beating him as a war-horn blew.

"This is bad," Skullivan gasped, crawling away from the dune-top and back toward the wagon. "This is very bad!" The Wetland traitor began to sprint toward the front of the wagon, determined to get the motor revving again. "IN FACT! I'M THINKING WE SHOULD LEAVE!" He screamed as he ran, sanding kicking up to his feet.

Suddenly a fire-shot smashed at his feet, stopping Skullivan in his tracks. From the direction of the setting sun a handful of Metlsand warriors stepped forward - only four or five total, having flanked the dune, but with fearsome weapons in hand. One of them, a tall man with dark brown hair and a scruffy beard beneath red face paint, stepped forward - blue eyes examining the group closely. "Step back!" He called, his voice hoarse. "All of ya'll step back! My name is Slatheurian of Clan Meltsand, what is your business sneaking up on us?"

"It wasn't our intent to sneak upon you and your war party, Clan Meltsand..." Uluru greeted with a respectful nod. "We were merely lost in the Qafar and stumbled upon your clan in the hopes of finding food and shelter. The cowboy ninja led us here..."

Jake smashed his makeshift club into the temple of a Meltsander, sending the man toppling to the ground with a dazed expression, then rammed his armored elbow into the short ribs of another. The man grimaced and in return, sent a fist into Jake's stomach. Jake grunted, thankful his armor had protected him from that, and kicked the man in the groin. The man went pale and flopped to the ground.

"Serves you right," Jake muttered, turning to intercept another club with his staff, hoping the others were using this time to get away. He wasn't even sure why he was bothering to do this, though perhaps it had something to do with that teenager, Boh or whatever her name was. Or maybe he just wanted to brawl a bit.

He loved a good brawl.

Musa shifted in her spot on the wagon, her golden eyes shimmering and reflecting the many campfire lights of the Meltsand camp. As the others around her spoke, she turned her head to watch and listen to each one as they did. Once the final person put their two cents in, she hummed and refocused on the supposedly hostile group of people.

"If these Meltsanders are as hostile and as skeptical as you all say then it would be unwise for us to all approach them together. Either we filter in by the threes or we find some way to all look alike.." she spoke to everyone, beside the cart or not. Her voice was clear enough for all of them to hear.

Once she was sure her words were taken note of, she turned about in her seat and looked for Ka'Wa and when she found her, she subtly waved her closer with her hand.
"I have a debt to you for saving me from the clutches of death. You and the pale man.." her eyes looked around for him for a moment. "But I suggest you change out of your armor as it is a very nice set of protection but will draw too many eyes." She speaks lowly to her after leaning over the cart to get close.

Suddenly a large rock was flung at Jake, knocking him over as he was fighting the Meltsanders footsoldiers. A hand was held up, and a shout rang across the war encampment. The thuggish soldiers ceased brawling with Jake as a robed figured parted them and spoke to the cowboy-ninja. "It appears that it is I, who cast the first stone," the man said as he looked over Jake, a hand combing over a long beard, crystal encrusted jewelry lining each of his fingers.

His booted heel slammed down on the boulder, pinning Jake to the ground. "Stuck between a rock and hard place, eh Hono no Ko?" The Meltsander's resident magician, Sulfurious spoke with familiarity.

"Guess we're in the clear," Uluru sighed, leaning his head against the walls of the wagon. "Guess luck's on our side," he half-smiled. "If only more of life's problems could be solved by happenstance."

"Please, still your hand, Hono no Ko," Sulfurious shook his head, pointing upward. "As you can see upon the hill, my associates are escorting your comrades into shelter. I would suggest you do the same. If it were up to me, I'd have you thrown into the stockade for whay you did to us last time, but...if you travel with honored guests, I suppose we must at least extend that same courtesy...for now," Sulfurious noted, kicking off the boulder and offering Jake a hand to help him up.

Jake sat up, grasped Sulfurious' offered hand and regained his feet. Straightening his armored jacket, he brushed himself off and grinned.

"Well, I didn't think you'd set the mages on me, but yeah, I probably deserve to be thrown in whatever passes for your jail. Of course, according to Mafliq, I'd be a hero, but that's not important, right?" Jake shrugged. "But no, really, I came to make it up to you guys. I don't like being the bad guy, so if there's anything I can do for you that is mostly morally sound..." He spread his hands. "You know I'm good for it."

Slatheurian nodded. "Okay. Follow me."

As the sun further set Slatheurian and his company of face-painted warriors began to lead the group down the side-path of the dune, the wounded helped and carried by the able as Mirova's wagon was left behind in favour of quicker transport. Slatheurian and his men were not quite gracious guides, but not cruel either - and for the few minutes it took their journey he seemed more consumed by fear than anything else.

"Okay," Slatheurian breathed as they reached the side of the dune. He glanced back at the team as the fires of the war-camp lit up ahead, it seeming even brighter now that the sun had nearly finished it's dip beneath the back of the horizon. "Everyone stay quiet," Slatheurian's nervous eyes turned to Ka'Wa. "And if you have to talk follow my lead."

Slatheurian nodded, taking the fire steps toward the camp. The entrance guards stood with their metal clubs in hand as he walked past. Skullivan and Mirova followed uneasily, the rest of the Nomad team too stepping forward. "I have a bad feeling about this..." Skullivan hissed, eyeballing the war machines and soldiers that glared at them as they entered.

Of course, there was another event in the camp distracting from the groups entrance - mainly that of Jake getting his body beaten to a bloody pulp by a group of brawny soldiers. "Shaman!" Slatheurian called, raising a hand up for the group to stop. "Shaman Sulfurious!" He called again, running forward toward the camp. "I found... I found refugees from an Aklar attack," Slatheurian spoke, his mouth twisting as he lied. "They need our- our compassion."

"True. Let's hope it turns a blind eye to us for a few moments longer..." Uluru nodded as they were led further into the camp of Clan Meltsand.

"Ah, refugees from the wretched Aklar," Sulfurious nodded. He glanced at Jake. "It appears your words ring true! Escorting these pilgrims from a vicious Aklar raid! Quickly, then we don't want to keep your charges waiting," Sulfurious nodded, ushering Jake along to join the Nomads.

Slatheurian breathed, his breath visible in the cooling desert air. He was internally screaming at how quickly the Shaman had accepted his explanation, even the badly beaten cowboy was taken in. "Th-Thank you, Shaman," Slatheurian bowed, though Sulfurious had already moved on to deal with other matters. Slatheurian turned to the group, looking like a child who had never expected to get this far in his ludicrous plan. A smirk came onto his face but disappeared after another moment. "This way, refugees," Slathuerian announced, marching forward with the group toward a large animal tent made of tanned leather.

"Get the healers and the Shaman's priestesses, we have a group in desperate need of attention!" Slatheurian called as the tent opened up, revealing a sea of Meltsand medicians inside.

Slatheurian smiled, his eyes locking with Ka'Wa's. "I missed you," He mouthed as the group walked forward.

"Shaman, huh?" Jake asked, following Sulfurious. "Does that make you in charge? Or just mystic leader?" Jake made quotations in the air as he said mystic and laughed. He replaced his hat on his head as he followed the Shaman. "Say, what are you guys doing out here anyway? This is a good-sized camp."

"I am only here to provide spiritual guidelance and mystical assistance upon the battlefield, Hono no Ko. Such is my duty as Clan Shaman...." Sulfurious answered. "As for why we're out here, well...we can't have you exposing military tactics, now can we? If you must know, however...ask our commander."
