Introduction

To some, the year was 2875, to others, it was year 30. The nation was divided by doubt, and had been so since the days of the first oracle, a man who failed to change the world when he was supposed to. It had been 30 years since his death, and 30 years since a different man seized power, and plunged the world into an industrialized darkness.

Once, the earth had seemed alive, the air had smelled fresh, and the seas had been teeming with curious and strange animals and treasures. It was a world who felt, and one day, it felt that a certain woman, who was pregnant, carried a little boy, who would grow up, and fulfill his destiny. He would bring the world into a new age, an age with death, disease, revolt, and he would be the one who would make the planet submit to him.

He was clever. More so than most. He entered politics, and soon he had his homeland enthralled. The public loved him, thought him to be the one who would lift them from misery and poverty. And at first, he did.

He built his first factory, a factory that produced and developed weapons for war. Many were sold to other nations, but most of them were hidden away, deep underground.
Factory after factory shot up, all owned by him. Before long he expanded his business, and bought property in other nations. He was still very active in politics, and with his new ideas and promises of progress, he quickly won over a massive following.

And then, one day, he faced an opponent. It was a young man from a different region, who said that progress shouldn't be achieved by selling children to the factories for a minimum wage, but rather, all should share, and be equal.

Before long, that led to an all out war. The politician had been prepared, he had the necessary weapons stored away, and now was the time to use them. The opposing politician died in battle, and the public now had no other choice than to follow the man who had taken their land.

Five years passed, and small battles in a much bigger war was being fought everywhere. One day, a man rose from the shadows, a darkhaired gunman, with unusual gifts. He was called “Oracle” by some. He was able to manipulate flame and heat, it was clear that he had been born with a purpose. He was rare, and it didn't take him long to become a legend. Everywhere he went, he helped the people out, he fought for them, and freed many from the war factories. He was looking for their owner, the politician, and it is said that one fateful day, he found him.

And then, the gunman was never heard from again. Nine years later, a girl was born. She also had a destiny to fulfill, for she would become the second oracle.

The city had grown ever so much since the first time he was there, giant dirty an dusty factories dominated the view, they were filled with heavy machinery, metal gears and steam everywhere. people where like slaves under the rule of the new government. a government that, despite his hardest effort, he could not stop. and as a result of that, he was confined to this world in between worlds. Because he could see and hear everything going on around him, even the thickest wall, could not shield him from the sound of rusty gears moving, machines running and even the sound of the very steam itself. And the darkest room could not prevent him from seeing his once so beloved world destroyed by corruption and grief. His name was Ford Eslington, and he was the first oracle. A task put on him by forces he could not fully understand. He was given the power to manipulate fire as he pleased, and he wielded his mighty Steam-Gear rifle like a true master. But now he was reduced to just roaming the world not able to touch it, for he was in spirit form, as he was in flesh and blood. although the world could not see him, he was completely invisible. He felt like there was something missing, something he needed to pass on, before he did himself, he did not know much about the afterlife, but he knew that he could not find peace, until he had fulfilled his duty. Many years passed, and the oracle grew tired and grumpy in mind, although his body stayed the same. He slowly forgot the adventurous life he once had. But he knew this, one day the world would need him again, so he followed the entire world moving around him, getting wiser than most mortal men. When the need arises, the oracle will rise again.

What to do?

This she asked herself a number of times. Coriander wasn't a stupid girl, she wasn't one of those who'd run away from home in the middle of the night. Her mother had given her a bag full of food, and her father had kissed her forehead when they had said goodbye. She had been in a great mood when she had left her parents behind. But, she had also felt a sting of heartbreak as she had looked back over her shoulder, seeing that her parents had gone to work in the fields, as they always did. Life goes on..." She had thought.

And it did. She had travelled for eight months, but hadn't found out where she was travelling to. She was lost in the world, and was in need of help. There was just only one person who could help her, and he was dead. But that didn't matter. She had great powers. More than anyone else, more than anyone would ever need. And she was sure that she could bring the first oracle to her side.

Sometimes she dreamt. She dreamt of being dead, and she was sure she was seeing it from his point of view. The world would pass her by, and she would fade more and more, and then... Then she would be pulled away, she would be forced back, she would feel her heart beating in her chest again, and when she opened her eyes in the dream, she saw herself.

And she had a feeling that it was a glimpse of his future. His imminent future.

She got up from the ground, looked to the sunset, and then breathed deeply. She stood on a hillside, the grass green, the sky coloured in warm red, orange and pink. She held out her hands, and pulled.

She was pulling him back to life.

When the need arises, the oracle will rise again. He heard her voice, like it was just yesterday she told him.

A very long time ago, when ford was a mighty hero, he stumbled upon a little village far to the east. He went in to see if everything was peaceful, as he did with every village he travelled through. There were giant houses, made out of only metal, some even out of gold. He became curious, because never before had his eyes looked upon such a wealthy and mighty society. So he walked up to one of the locals and asked how this could be. He replied that, in exchange for their support in his new formed government, a tall stranger simply gave the villagers everything they were in need of, and much more.

The wealthy man the citizen had spoken of, later turned out to be the evil ruler of the entire world. but at the time the oracle did not know this. so he drank at the local bar for 2 whole days, what else could he do? nothing seemed to be wrong, the good people of the village insisted, and the mead was free due to their new found wealth.

It was not until he reached the opposite border of the village, planning to travel on with a full stomach and a clouded mind, he discovered her. She was a grown woman, with grey eyes, brown long hair, and thin lips that formed the sweetest smile. Despite the other villagers, she wore a dusty but beautiful dress. she was collecting herbs, and home grown potatoes in her garden. Ford approached her and asked if she was okay. She replied that she was just fine, although she was worried for the amount of food they had left. It turned out that she and her husband, had refused to support the government, and therefore they were given no food, no shelter, and they were forced to live outside the border of the main city. But she also insisted that ford went home with her, because she had a tale to tell him.

She told him that they had been waiting, and that they would travel away soon, in hiding. Away from the new government, and their strict watchful eye. There she wanted to raise a child, unspoiled by the cruelty of this world. She was very aware who he was, and what great deeds he had already performed. But she told him this "if you are ever lost on your dangerous path, it helps to find the nearest hill, and watch the sun. Because when the need arises, the oracle will rise again" She smiled at him once more, and then send him off again, with a very special charm, in the shape of a metal gear.

He did not fully understand it back then, and did not think more of it. But in the world between world you feel more lost, than anywhere else. And on a fateful day, he felt like sitting on a hill, and watching the sunset. He sat there for what seemed as months, and suddenly he felt something, he had not felt in many years. A heartbeat, it was weak but it grew in strength. The grass became green again, and the sky changed from grey to warm red, orange and pink. He felt someone reach out and hold around him. His stomach became warm, then his face, then his legs, and his heart pounded in his chest. he was ripped out, out of existence, out of the spirit world, and into that of the living.

He was confused, disoriented, and his heart pounded away. But he started to breath. He looked up and saw a girl with a massive white light around her. The light slowly faded away, and he could see that she had short brown hair, she looked confused and scared down on her hands with her big grey eyes, although her thin lips formed a smile. And in that moment he felt something new. He would follow her no matter where she went, he would lead the way when she was lost, he would protect her from harm, and if he was to die again, it would be for her.

But he felt ever so tired, and fell asleep with his head on her lap, before she got to say a word. She looked confused and refusing, but she could not do much about it, he was merely sleeping, alive and not dead as he was ten minutes ago. And when he woke up again, there were much to be discussed.

And there she sat, with his head on her lap. It was really rather unexpected, but still, a wide smile appeared on her face. She had just defied death. Looking down at the face of the first oracle, she happened to, just for a short moment, laugh. But it wasn't a laugh of amusement, no, it was because she loved her victory.

Slowly, her lips began to move, and she spoke. She kept her voice low, but there was no mistaking the joyful tone to her words. "I am awesome." She felt a rush of adrenaline. Her fist action as the second oracle had been to revive the first. Her heartbeat slowed down. Now, she could feel how much of her energy it had drained, and her powers felt like they were seeping from her fingertips and passing to him. What was happening? This wasn't supposed to happen?

"Oh no... Oh no." She was close to panic, and decided that it was about time that she moved away from him. Maybe she could stop it like that. "Okay, don't go and wake up quite yet." she mumbled to him, as she moved away, and carefully lifted him, so that he wouldn't be awakened by his head slamming into the ground. She then crawled across the ground, her movements swift and nimble, and then found a rock. It was small, no bigger than the first joint of her index finger. She pouted as she thought to herself that what she was about to do didn't make much sense.

"Hello!" She yelled as she threw the rock at him. "Wake up!"

There didn't seem to be a reaction, so she looked down at the grass again, and searched for yet another rock.

Ford was dreaming about a blue and unspoiled sky, with white puffy clouds. It was as if he was flying, floating over fields of green, a nature unspoiled by the evil rule of tyranny. And he felt peaceful for the first time in many years. But when the best of dreams are at their highest, something always seems to go wrong, and this one was no exception. Just when ford flew the highest he was hit by a rock, randomly appearing out of nowhere. He fell to the ground, spinning into his own demise. In his fall he heard a voice calling him. Right before he smashed into the cold hard earth, he woke up.

He looked around in great confusion, and quickly spotted a girl, the very same girl that had brought him back from the dead, just moments ago. It was as she was searching for something. He looked at her for a while, realising there was something warm about her, an aura of life and powers far beyond his understanding. He looked at her for a while. Then he cleared his throat, and talked to her in a calm voice.

"I am awake now, I have returned from a realm beyond this, and I see now that this can only be your doing. There is much to do, much more than any of us can imagine. My name is Ford Eslington and I am the oracle chosen by the great stream of life, in this dying world, Who are you who wield such mighty powers, and how can I repay your sacrifice?"

She ended her search abruptly, as she heard his voice. She looked up when he spoke his name, and slowly, the look on her face turned from wondering, to one of absolute disbelief. The more he said, she looked at him as if he was crazy. Coriander knew she hadn't gotten in over her head, she never did. She could handle everything. Still, perhaps this had been one of her not so grand ideas? She didn't bother with thinking about what to say now, she didn't consider what would be the smartest move. Instead, she could only be dismayed at him thinking that she didn't know who he was.

"What?! I know just who you are, do you really think I run around reviving random people?!" Her pride was hurt, and she wasn't going to let that go unpunished. She rose from the ground and took a few steps towards him.

In reality, Coriander was the type of person who was a danger to herself. Too furious, too vindictive. "Don't talk to me like that!" She yelled, her fists balled up in anger. Why? Why was she thrown into a fit of rage this easily?

Why did she want to laugh, and why had the lines between success and failure faded? Her heart was pumping in her chest, and she had tears in her eyes. And there was a smile on her face.

"I'm Coriander Heathen. I'm here 'cause you screwed up being oracle." She said. a harsh wind blew, it ripped at her hair and clothes, and somehow, it tore her fury with it. And inside, she was a scared little girl, with enormous task ahead of her, and she really, really needed his help. Yet, how could someone as proud as her ever admit to that?

He looked at her, and smiled.

"I was well aware of your intention from the beginning, but it would be very impolite of me, not to introduce myself to my rescuer. And yes it seems that I pretty much Screwed up the task given to me, although I do not remember what I did wrong" He smiled even more, as he walked towards her, he felt so reliefed finally to interact with the world again, and Corianders behaviour amused him, not in an unfriendly or mean way, but when you have been deserted for as long as Ford, its nice finally to talk to someone. So he tried to make his voice as warm and friendly as possible, and then he tales of how he did not remember any circumstances regarding his death and how he used to roam the entire world, trying to crush forces such as tyranny and evil.

"I am indeed the first Oracle, and that must make you the second. And I am greatly in need of your help, just as you need mine. back when it was only me, I was young and reckless, and my temper would burn red every time something went wrong. But with you chosen, and with me revived, I am certain that we can finish what I started. and to be honest, I did not screw up as much as you think, I helped a lot of people, and I did manage to get a schematic over the great dark tower of Vapore, a place where the members of the government occasionally meet. So I would say I did pretty good, only thing is, we have to find the place where I hid it"

At first she was silent. She pouted, and crossed her arms over her chest.

"... I'm not quite so sure that we have to do that." She said. She was like a child, spoiled. She needed to decide, she needed to be in control. "I'm not even sure I did the right thing by pulling you back, because I think I'm feeling some serious side effects here!" She took another step towards him, and pointed to herself. She gasped for air, and finally realised just how silly she had been. She shouldn't have chosen as she had. She should have left him dead.

Coriander held her hands up in front of his face, and oddly, thin little lines of silver flowed from her fingertips, to him. She was losing more and more of her power, and a strange thought whisked through her mind. Was this originally his?

"... Don't think... You can just show... Up here and tell m-me... What to do...!"

And then she fell over. She hit the ground hard, and she was out cold. He hadn't been the only one who had needed a nap. The wind died out, and silence fell over the scenery. Legends weren't supposed to start like this...

Were they?

He ran to her side, as if he was pulled by forces unknown, and he sat down beside her.

He took off his jacked, and placed it under her unconscious head. he watched as the energy was drained out of her body, and right into his. He did not know what to do, the energy simply found his fingertips, as if it belonged inside his very blood. Maybe that was how he was found in the first place. He had learned many things in his long years of meditating in the spirit world, and he knew that the great life stream was the source to any and all energy in this world, every form of life was given its own amount, and when a life ends its energy is returned, and reused in another being.

So was it possible that Coriander had in her body, the very same oracle energy that ford once processed? of this he thought deeply. And then he decided that if it was in fact his energy, that he once used to manipulate the greatest of flames, then he could command it exactly as he pleased. so he wanted to stop the flow, and cut the strings. But to cut through fate is no easy task. Heavy wind emitted around him, burning hot flames followed, and it was as the very universe itself worked against him. But when a man like Ford uses his enormous powers as a oracle, combined with his burning fury, even the will of the great life stream itself can be bend. At least for a while. The sky once again changed to warm red, orange and pink, a sharp beam of burning light appeared, and the bonds were broken.

Ford gasped, as the energy stopped. His body was not weak, but neither was it as strong as in his hero days. The oracle power remained the same, but it was as if it was distributed equally between him and Coriander. There were a good chance that the using of his more advanced fire abilities, would drain her further. But as long as they stayed like this, he thought that unlikely to happen. So he pledged, that he would only unleash the greatest of his powers, when she was in need of his protection.

He then cleverly wrapped his long jacket around her arms and chest as well, forming both a pillow and a blanked. The sky had turned dark and the stars were showing, so he laid himself down next to her. and fell asleep thinking about how to explain it all to her, in a way so that she would not get mad again.

Every tale has its beginning, and even the mightiest heroes needs rest.

"Coriander? Is that you? Wow, it's been so long, you've really changed! Of course you're still the same, but you look so different... Anyway, it's good to have you back home again. Can I get you anything? Yeah, I work here now. Unfortunately, not everyone's made out to become something great like you... Some of us just have fathers who owns inns that we have to take over... I'd wish I could come with you, I really do. Take care, okay? Watch out for yourself, and make us proud. And come back home to me. Please come back home."

As Coriander opened her eyes, the memory of her friend's face faded, and was lost in her mind. She was laying on her side, and just as she moved she felt it. The only thing she could compare the pain to, was having spend the night in a shipwreck deep under the surface of the sea. The crushing weight of the water surrounding her, bending her ribs, the black seaweed pulling her down, tying her to the sea floor, and then the worst. All the things that made the old memories come back in waves.

She rolled to her other side, and slowly got to her knees. She looked back over her shoulder, and saw him there, apparently still asleep. Her mouth felt dry, and as she looked around, she realised that morning hadn't come quite yet. The sky was covered in clouds, and the stars didn't even shine through. Her stomach rumbled, and sent a wave of nausea trough her. She didn't think she'd ever been so hungry before. She found her things not far from herself, and crawled to them. It was clear that she had a little trouble figuring out what she was doing, but her body knew. She opened every bag, turned everything over, and soon, she was busy eating all the food she had.

Bread, dried meat, a little fruit, honey, cheese... She even had potatoes and leftover chicken from the day before.

"Screw this, I'mma cook the best stew ever."

It didn't matter that her cooking skills very rather bad, she was going to do it anyway. She was still hungry, but the more she ate, the more she could feel some of her strength return. And with that in mind, she began the task of cooking what would most likely become the worst meal in the history of the world.

Ford was out cold, dreaming about a time, and a place that did not stand clear in his memory. And therefore the dream he dreamt went cloudy, twisted and hazed.

His legs were tired from walking, and his heart pounded away. In front of him a dark castle stood tall, its roots sucked out all that was pure and good in this world. and fed the ground with evil, corruption and sin. He was dragged there by forces unknown, and when he reached two tall giant metal gates, no guards were to be seen anywhere. His dream jumped, as if he were reading a book, but skipping every other page. Suddenly he found himself in a large room, it was filled with heavy machines. Gears were spinning, steam were emitting, and the very sound of the people, hard working and crying, would fill the roam with great sadness. next thing he knew he was on a metal staircase leading down, it seemed endless, and then he fell. Giant jaws closed around him, and his body was crushed between huge spinning metal gears.

He gasped as he woke up, he was warm and covered in sweat. His body was stiff, and his back was hurting badly. The ground was cold, but a new day had dawned. He sat up, and he looked around, only to find that Coriander was gone. His stomach roared at him, and he felt like no strength were left in his tired body, but he stood up anyway trying to remember if there was any food left, but then it struck him "of course there is no food left, you have bin dead for 30 years you moron" a tiny smile showed on his lips, and then he started searching for Coriander. He called her name.

"Here!" Was all she yelled when she first heard him call out to her. He was closer to her than he appeared to know, and she figured it wouldn't take him long to find her. She sat by a small fire, a fire that burned so softly that it barely even was there. "Just follow the stench!"

She was on her knees, and was stirring the small pot that was above the fire, with a very dissatisfied look on her face. Somehow she had managed to boil together an odd mess of meat and potato, which had come to resemble swap water. Swamp water with dead people trying to get back on safe ground. She wondered for a moment if it was unhealthy for a girl like her to think about death as much as she just so happened to do, but quickly thought of something else, as she realised that yes, it was unhealthy.

With that in mind, she decided to try and get Ford to talk. "I ate everything but this. I hope you aren't hungry, 'cause I'm probably going to eat all this too. What was it like being dead, by the way? And do you remember how you died? Oh, I was thinking about something... You must really need to take a piss. I don't, I just went, but you've been dead for a really long time. There's bushes over there."

As she uttered the last few words, she pointed to a shrubbery. "And... Ehm... Yeah. Maybe this will be done soon. I'm not really sure."

He turned around and noticed her, She sat down right next to a tall tree. In front of her was a large amount of empty bags, bombs, torrents, clothing, opened food containers and what appeared to be a pile of bolts and scrap metal. And there she was in the middle of everything, cooking what appeared to be a green stew that smelled a bit like a wet and dirty squirrel. She seemed a bit more cheerful than the day before, so he decided to go sit next to her.

"I'm actually very hungry.." His stomach roared as the words crossed his lips, and his face turned a little red. "I know I have bin acting a bit strange, but when you have bin dead for over 30 years, your not exactly used to chatting. I mean nobody can see or hear you, and the memories of your life... and your death, slowly fades away. But I remember a red dawn, not unlike this one, the sun came up as any other day, and coloured the sky in a warm orange colour. Things were different back then, the governments grip on the land was not as tight as now, and I had already freed many villages. I woke up as any other day, and packed my stuff. But somehow they were onto me, a giant gear powered bird grabbed my arm, and took me somewhere. And the last thing I remember of that life, is waking up in a large dark room, filled with steam and heavy machinery. Next thing I know I was dead. It took a little getting used to at first, but it was not very different from living, or at least not for me. Although every day I watched the world crumble right before my eyes, and I could not do a thing to stop it. So I waited for something to happen. The suffering eventually became to much, so I started to travel and meditate. Because I could go anywhere undetected I learned many secrets from just eavesdropping. And at long last I remembered something a very wise woman once said to me, so I sat down on this very hill, meditating and waiting. And just as she had predicted, I returned to life. That actually makes you the first person who has ever succeeded in defying death itself. Oh... and your actually right, I really do need to take giant a piss. And maybe hunt down some more food, I fell like I could eat a whole cow."

So that was how it felt being dead? Really? She wondered how it would feel to have spent the last thirty years as he had. He didn't look like he had even aged beyond thirty, so perhaps he had just been frozen in time. She wasn't going to ask him, but she couldn't help but to wonder if he had seen his friends and loved ones age beyond him. Had he jut been left behind?

"You know, that bird... You mentioned a mechanic bird, didn't you? Are you sure it wasn't a dragon? See, the last few months, there's been stories of mechanical dragons out east. You know, near the Kell mountains. You remember those, don't you? I haven't gone there yet, mostly because it's a long way, but I've heard that several cities, have been completely destroyed, and that the mayor of Kell don't even leave his house any more. I was planning on checking it out but...." She stopped. What was there to say? The truth maybe.

"I was planning on checking it out, but I'm too scared."

No way in hell she would ever admit that. No way in hell she would admit it to someone like him. "You just packed your things, and went to save the world..." She mumbled, not wanting him to hear it, yet she couldn't keep those words inside. Ford seemed courteous, polite, strong and smart. What did she have? Bombs that shot off stuff, and a strong desire to show her worth. If the world needed saving, they shouldn't have chosen a kid like her.

"All in all, I kinda want to know how you're feeling. I mean, this seems so easy right now, but I don't know where to start. We can do a number of things... If you hadn't died, what would you have done?"

"Dragons..." Ford mumbled the word over and over again. At this point Coriander must have thought that he was completely insane, he was just sitting there staring at her at her, while he was mumbling nonsense. He replayed the scene over and over in his head, and each and every time it became a little clearer, until he remembered it at long last. The most magnificent dragon, made out of only steel, bolts and spinning gears. It was no bird that gapped him on that fateful day, it was exactly as coriander suspected. And the dark room he was trapped in, it could easily have been inside a mountain. It would make sense wouldn't it? He remembered gears spinning, machines running and people screaming, this actually sounded a lot like a place, for manufacturing metal dragons.

Ge gasped and looked coriander in the eyes. "I remember know, it was as you said, not a bird at all. It was a huge steel dragon, its weird because I haven't seen them ever since. But this one was taller than the oldest tree and its wing span was possible over 9 meters. But it is mostly just a shadow in my memory, being dead makes you forget far too much." He now looked dawn with a very sad expression on his face, he tried to remember but it just wouldn't come back to him, and that made him feel as good as useless. And on top of that he was dead scared to ever return to the that dark mountain. For all he knew, he could easily have been brutally murdered in there.

He wiped his eyes, hoping that she would not see it. And then he looked up again and spoke, although his voice was slightly shaking "I don't know where to start... I really never did. I were never given a map or a compass, or anything like that" His lips showed a little smile. "I grew up in a green and healthy little town, and all I ever dreamt of, was to become a famous painter. I wanted to paint green fields bathed in the sunlight and the bluest of oceans. My father was a hunter, and my mother was a old fashioned housewife. My dad always took me hunting in the woods around the city, he showed me how to be a great marksman and a even greater hunter, but of course he did not know a single thing about painting. One day he saw one of my better pictures, I had painted a beautiful steam clock rifle, with many great details, if I were to say so myself. He seemed to like it, so I gave it to him on his next birthday. It hung over the fireplace for many years, and when I turned 17, he gave me a riffle that looked exactly like the one on the picture. he made it himself and everything" He took off the riffle he had hanging over his shoulder, and showed it proudly to coriander.

"The first time I fired it, we both were shocked, both the bullets and the rifle practically burned red. The rifle was completely unharmed, I wish I could say the same about my old dads cabin. When my dad tried It nothing really happened, I guess that's when we first discovered my gift with fire. Of course I didn't understand it back then, so I was dead scared. But my dad insisted that we went hunting anyway. So I quickly became known as the Flame hunter to some, and Fire starter to others... I really didn't burn down their house on purpose... But anyway the rumour about a Flame hunter who could easily kill even the most fierce animals quickly spread, although I still hated it. But when money are short and you have a reputation, you start trading. It was my dads idea, but I did it anyway. I started passing through towns and small settlements, trading meat and paintings... No one ever bought the paintings..."

Ford sighed deeply, and then he continued his tale " One day I came to a very strange little village, all the curtains where shut and all the doors where locked. At that time the government had already began recruiting their loyal slaves, but this small settlement had refused their offer. So I was just at the wrong place, at the wrong time. There were only two people in the street, a filthy man in what appeared to be a very expensive suit and a young girl, She had a pretty red dress on, her hair were long and blond, her lips were red from the lipstick she used, and her eyes were deep blue. The man was intending to rape her, right there in the middle of the street, and no one did anything about it. When he grabbed his switch-blade, I just couldn't take it any more, so I ran over to there, and I yelled stop as loud as I could. He turned to me and grabbed his gun, he shot me in the arm, but I knew he was aiming for my heart. And when he tried to shoot me again, I shot him. He hit the ground and combusted into flames because of the fire my bullets tend to emit. Another man like him of course saw the whole thing and ran for help. From that moment on, I was lawless. They had both bin highly ranked government members, and they thought I was the fire oracle from the great prophecy. The girl thanked me dearly, I never came to learn her name, but she liked my pictures. And the next day I needed to travel again, I could only be in a town for so long, before they found me. Later I learned the true potential of my fire abilities, and it is true that I saved many cities from the government back then, but truth be told I was actually just trying to run away from them"

Ford became all silent, and took a deep breath. "When dad heard about my death, his rage burned red, and he tried to revenge me, but I saw him get killed by the pigs who turned this world rotten. My mom died many years after, in the very same bed she once shared with him. I was right next to her, but she could not hear me, I was just standing there. She called my name right before she died with a smile on her face... My old picture still hangs over my dads old fireplace, even to this day. I've been there many many times ever since, just looking at it for hours" He now wept, it was impossible for him to hold the tears away any longer. He closed his eyes and continued. "I just wanted to tell you I never chose this, and I wouldn't want it for anybody else. But I know that my soul can not find any rest until the world is saved once again, and I have never seen anyone with as strong aura of energy as you, so I guess I... sort of... Really need your help" He spoke the last four words as quickly as he could, he took a deep breath, and then he continued onwards. "I don't know where to start, but the nearest city would not be a bad idea, that`s how I always did it you know. one step at a time".

He now smiled at Coriander again, in the sort of way you do, when you want to tell somebody you are okay. "I also learned another thing... you cant do anything as long as you're hungry, so do you think that stew is about ready yet?"

She just stared at him. Silently.

Her eyes were wide, and her mouth had been reduced to a thin line. This had to be a big fat lie. Both of them? Both of them were emotional wrecks? How was a girl her age supposed to deal with a grown man crying, and especially when he seemed hellbent on not letting it show? Finally, she licked her lips, and inched closer to him. She tried to maintain eye-contact with him, but his gaze seemed to wander all over the place. When she was close enough, she placed her hand on his shoulder, and then patted him gently on the back. That was er way of showing him sympathy, for she really didn't know what else to do. Would this be good enough? This was an odd situation, and she had not been prepared for what her questions unleashed, but at least now they had something more to go on.

"Your plan sounds good. What do you say we head east then? If the mechanical dragons existed thirty years ago, and now run amok in the mountains, and if you were taken by one of them.... Wait a minute," She paused, and her expression completely changed. A worried line had appeared between her eyebrows, and the corners of her mouth was pointing to the ground.

"Keep an eye on the stew." She then ordered, as she rose to her feet, and almost jumped to her bags. It took her only few seconds to pull out a map, and carry it back to Ford. She spread out the map in front of him, and held her hand above it. There was still very little light, but soon, a soft, but faint light shone from her palm.

"We're here, north-west." She said, holding her hand so that he could see their approximate position. "They're out east." She then added, looking like she wasn't sure what she was going to say. "If you knew I existed, maybe they do too. I was never recorded, my parents saw to that, but what if they can somehow detect that we're alive? Wouldn't you then think the dragons were a way to pull us out of hiding? It would be the worst time to be discovered, I'm weakened, and we can only trust each other... Okay, look. If you help me trough this, if you help me free the world of the factories and all those things they bring with them, I'll help you. I'll make sure your soul can rest."

She looked at him, and held out a hand.

"Deal?" She asked him.

"Deal!" He replied, and took her hand. He was smiling again, and somehow the whole operation seemed a bit easier. It was a strange feeling to finally touch somebody after so long, and he couldn't help to feel a bit warm inside. But he continued before she would suspect anything "I don`t think they know we have returned yet, and they are probably still searching for you, if they even know you exist yet. But we should definitely keep a watchful eye, because I am afraid it will be quite problematic to hide me from them for very long. Besides they will definitely fear us if we start putting factories down, and I really don't want a metal beastie to come knocking down my door.

He was really happy that she seemed to trust him already, he had only the best of intentions, and he really wanted her on his side, he quickly thought of something to say, that would fit the mood.

"I will help you get rid of these factories, and it seems like we are going to save the world together, so you better get used to me" He smiled teasingly at her.

"And besides, even if the dragons really are from the government, maybe we should head east anyway. I mean if we are to infiltrate an evil organisation, its not one bit practical if they know exactly what we are up to all the time, so maybe our first step should be to silence the dragons for good? that way we avoid the destiny I have already suffered once"

"Don't smile at me like that. You're creepy, old man." She said, letting go of his hand.

She then resumed looking down at the map, and pointed to several locations that didn't form a straight line, but rather arched over the mountains, and showed a road to the north side of Kell. "I don't know how much of this is left," she told him, while she traced the path with her fingertip. She bit her lower lip, and thought about what he had said.

"I guess the problem is, that we have no idea how smart our enemy is, how many enemies we have, and we don't know how much they know. We shouldn't run in there head-first, I saw we pass trough the miner towns, and enter the city that way. The miner towns haven't been there long, they're younger than me. I remember when they began recruiting. The government keeps saying that the mountains are full of gold, but that's bullshit. They're looking for something else. Maybe, that's why the dragons are there... To keep strangers away."

Coriander went silent again, and then looked up at Ford, her face showing nothing but her determination. "We're going there." She said, and she wasn't planning on letting him get a say in the matter. She rolled he map up quickly, and went to stash it in her bags.

She couldn't let of the story he'd told her. It had really struck home with her, and she felt like there was a monster of sorrow in her stomach. Rolled up, and sleeping. At least for now it was. "I don't want my fate to be like that..." She mumbled under her breath.

"uh ohhh sorry..." He only smiled teasingly at her, to try and lighten the mood a little bit. She seemed like she was on some sort of emotional roller-coaster right now. And he was pretty sure she was stressed out as well, It was a big job to save the world, and he had been stressed from the very beginning. Her ideas were good though, no point in just walking into the main city completely visible to everyone. And besides maybe there was more to this dragon secret, maybe there would be some way to use them against the government itself. They had bin spying and collecting information for decades, so if there was one place to look for weaknesses, it would be their mountain.

In the act of trying to forget his fear of ever returning to that mountain, he remembered something else. Old stories passed down in generations from parent to child. Adventure stories of another time, where mighty warriors would ride on the back of fire breathing dragons. He had heard these camp fire stories many times, on his long travels. And though he did not know if they were fire-breathing, he could not let go of the flying idea. It just seemed so perfect in his head, to corner the enemy with their own powerful and mighty weapon.

He explained his thought to Coriander. He explained that he greatly supported her idea, and he lightly touched the dragon rider thing, all why he was waving his arms around, in a very storyteller kind of fashion. Then he sat down again, simply asking her. "So when do we leave?"

"Dude, I totally wanna ride a dragon..." Was the very first thing she said to him. As the two of them sat there, in the early light of day, she looked to what would soon become their breakfast. The stew cooking in the small black pot, was only simmering now, and looking out across the landscape, she found that it was about time the world begun to wake up. Her parents, back at the farm would already have begun their day. It was in the middle of the harvest season, the fields were probably already in full bloom. After all, it had been a great summer so far, warm and rainy.

As she glanced to the rising sun, she was, for just a second brought back to a night where she had been alone. She had set up camp under a few low trees, and suddenly, the sky had poured rain down on her, and the heavens had been ripped by thunder and lightning. And it was the kind of thunderstorm that made Coriander almost go crazy. Not in fear, not from loneliness, but longing. A strange longing to pull at the power she was witnessing and make it hers.

"Well..." She then started, as she turned her attention back to Ford. "Get something to eat, I guess it's ready. And while you're at it, get something for me too. I still feel like I'm at half energy. Normally..." She paused, not sure what to say, not even sure if she should say it. Might as well, she thought to herself. "Normally, it feels like I have enough for an army. I suppose you took what you need to hang on to your life. And I suppose that I'll get it back... When... Ehm..." There she came to a stop. What was there to think? The only choice the two of them had was to try and finish what had been started.

"Did you know that in some places, it's become impossible to grow anything. Not even the slightest patches of grass will hang on. Everything just dies. According to what I've heard, the ground turns red, and these weird worms turn up. I heard there was a place like that nearby, I wanted to check it out. It's not a detour, that's why it fits well. We're gonna see if the rumours are true." She shot him a smile, and handed him a small bowl as she did.

"For stew." Coriander explained.

He was so happy to see her smile at him, and hopefully she did not think he was some sort of pervert. He took her stew bowl and started to fill it up, he was right about to hand it back to her, when he remembered just how much of her energy he had drained, so he threw in quite a bit more and then gave it to her. He then turned to the other bowl, and filled it for himself. It smelled funny, and it was sort of green, with weird lumps in it. But it was the first food he had been offered in 30 long years, so he was not about to turn it down. He took his spoon and dug in, it filled his mouth with a weird sort of warm and fuzzy feeling. It was actually not that bad after all, but then again he had completely forgotten how food was supposed to taste, so he couldn't really compare it to anything.

The joy of eating came over him, he had not had any pleasures in a very long time, so he was not about to let a bit of green stop him. He ate the whole bowl, and then turned his attention to Coriander. He had himself heard about the dissolute and dry areas with the red sand, there were supposed to be some sort of worm life, that were slightly mutated from the pollution in the ground. But it was right there, on the road they were supposed to take, just as she had said.

"I think its from the pollution" He was trying to speak and eat another batch of stew at the same time, which must have looked rather hilarious, because he could not control the stew while he was talking, and it was rather hard for him to stop eating. "Steam is not the only thing the factories emit, and I think the red ground is a result of the poisoned gasses. But you are right, its not any kind of detour... slurp... And if we plan on getting to the mountains, its smarter to go through the deserted areas. So lets go there and check it out as soon as were done eating. Because dude" He looked up and stopped his uncontrolled eating "I really want to ride a dragon as well"

He smiled at her, he was ready for adventure once again, and this time nothing could stop him. He had been given another chance, and for this he was grateful. Together they were going to save the word.

"... By the way, I like your stew. I cant identify any of the flavours, but its really addicting"

She smiled at him, heartfelt and true when he praised her cooking. She was always one to accept a compliment, and this one fell exactly where it should. She tried the stew herself, and for a moment allowed the taste to fill her mouth. It was peculiar. Very peculiar. She looked to Ford again, and suddenly squinted her left eye a little.

Then she gagged, and the mouthful of stew ended up on the ground before her.

She turned her face to the sky and almost hissed at it. Her expression was once again one of disbelief, and when she turned her attention to Ford again, she only had one thing to say regarding the stew. "Those rocks with the small green hairs..." she paused as she turned her head and spat at the ground, only to continue with a strange laugh of disgust. "... I probably shouldn't have put those motherfuckers in the stew."

Somehow sitting there with him felt like meeting an old friend after a long time. She didn't have any reservations towards embarking on a journey with him, not at all, simply because he seemed like a nice guy. And he was the only one in the world who would understand how it felt to have the title that the two of them shared. Coriander didn't know the limits of her powers, she didn't even really know what her powers were... What kind of start for her was that?

Shouldn't she have practised awesome ninja-moves from when she could walk, shouldn't she have full control and knowledge of what the hell she was doing? She pouted as she thought about those questions, and then ended up just deciding that people who had extensive knowledge of everything and could do awesome ninja-moves at the age of nineteen were totally unrealistic anyway.

"All the stories I've heard about the worms are fairly new," She said, returning to their previous discussion topic, "So you're probably right. Eat up, I'm gonna go pack my stuff, and then we can take off." She stood up, and begun her work. She didn't really hurry, but still worked with the routines of an experienced traveller.

Ford glanced down on his bowl of stew, then at the ground, and then back on his stew. Was this not how it was supposed to taste? He had no concept whatsoever of how food was supposed to taste. He waited a few seconds, and then he kept on eating anyway. She was actually right, perhaps it would have been better without the hairy rocks, but oh well, whatever. There was a long journey before them, and he couldn't go out there with an empty stomach.

He wondered, would he be good enough for the challenges they were about to face? Would he fail once again? He ate the last stew and got up. He looked at the sun, as it warmed his face. He felt a connection towards coriander, something that could not be explained in words, but that didn't make it any less real. It was a bond formed between two very special people, sharing a common goal and destiny. This time he would not fail, he was sure of it. Because this time, he would not be alone.

He tried to pack what little he had left. He looked in every of his pockets and pouches. He discovered a good amount of bullets, approximately one hundred. Some black powder, spare gears for his riffle, and his pocked watch. It seemed that there was not much to pack, so he started to clean up the stew pot. Coriander didn't strike him as a girl who would want too much help, so he just kept to the pot and the small bowl.

When they were all done he walked up next to her, and just stood there a bit. He thought for a moment to hold her hand, but she would maybe misunderstand his intentions, so he hesitated and looked her in the eyes instead. He smiled at her, it was a happiness he hadn't felt in a long time.

"So are you ready for adventure? Because if you are, I think we should get going"

This was the beginning of something great, he just knew it.

She had packed her things, which in reality wasn't much, just enough to make it by. Besides, even though she had been granted great powers, she still had the somewhat weak body of a regular girl of nineteen. She carried a large backpack over her shoulders, made of thick leather. Even though it was old and worn, it was durable, and didn't look like it would break any time, ever. A few blankets and such had been tied to the backpack, these were very important, since Coriander wasn't a fan of sleeping directly on the ground. In one hand, she carried a very big metallic suitcase, one that almost bounced off the ground for each step she took. This she was very aware of, and thus, she was careful. The suitcase was filled with traps and bombs, and even though they weren't movement sensitive, she still didn't want to take chances with it.

And around her waist, she had strapped a belt with a multitude of tools hanging from it. "I'm ready." She stated with her usual wide grin, as she stood next to him, looking ahead. "All we have to do is to follow that trail some way, we'll have to go trough two small villages, and then turn right. You got that? It's gonna take us a small three days to reach the mountains on foot, but I really doubt you have a fortune hidden in that stylish coat of yours? No. Didn't think so. No train rides then. Come on, you're so slow!"

She was already walking, her pace fast, as if they had to hurry.

"Oh, the trains weren't around back when you were alive, were they? They're fantastic! Gorgeous! Their design is so amazing, every time I see one, I wanna take it apart, and study all the little bits. Ugh, I'm almost drooling, just at the thought of it!" Her love for technology was sometimes overwhelming, but it was still so new, and not even the trains were for everybody.

He had seen these trains before, but not while he was still alive. He used to think of them as giant noise steel horses. They didn't look much like horses of course, but they seemed to serve the same purpose. Maybe he was being a bit old school, but he thought to himself that a good horse could outrun these so called trains any day. It was not that he wasn't open to new technology, because it actually fascinated him quite a bit, it was just that he was afraid of it. He had seen the world evolve around him, but he himself had not even aged one day. And because he hadn't really bin a part of the evolution, he thought that most of it was just evil machinery, tormenting people like the factories.

They had started to walk, he was smiling because coriander had complimented his jacket. He was not very good with sarcasm, so even if that had bin her intention, he couldn't really tell. He had some trouble keeping up with her speed, but he was far too proud to ask her to slow down. The sun greeted them with a perfect day of nice and warm weather. They walked on the tracks leading up to the mountains, Ford thought to himself that if a train came by, they would be crushed instantly. But that was of course only because he didn't know how far away one was able to hear them.

Around them was now a good bit of green unspoiled forest, the trees were tall, and the bushes were thick and many. Some of them were even filled with berries, he hadn't tasted berries in so many years, but he didn't really have a clue of how far away from the polluted ground they were, so he didn't really dare. The air were fresh and clean, but in it there was a strange oily smell. The infested red ground could not be that far away after all he thought, they would maybe even reach it before the first city.

He explained his suspicion to coriander, and then told her that he did not really manage to get his wallet with him from the spirit realm, so he was really rather broke right now. He heard something move not far away from them, so he stopped talking. He looked right at it, and before he knew of it a creature mostly resembling a black bear jumped right at them. But just before it was given the chance to attack, ford barely managed to hit it with the wooden part of his riffle. It didn't inflict much damage, but if managed to stop the first attack. The creature now stood right in front of them and growled, it was a good bit smaller than an average black bear, but it had long razor sharp teeth, grease and uncontrollable fur, a long and pointy tail, and on its back were some strange looking red worms, clearly sucking its blood.

It was getting ready to attack again, ford pointed his loaded riffle strait at it, attempting to scare it away, but it didn't move one but.

He looked at Coriander for advice.
