The Story

For many millennia, both humans and animals have roamed the earth. This is a basic scientific fact. However, what is a lesser known fact, for the same amount of time, there has been a supernatural link between the two. Humans with the ability to shape shift into animals have inhabited the planet since before even any oral records were formed. These creatures are simply referred to as the “Shifters.” They have - and still do - made up less than five percent of the population, ensuring the secrecy of their existence outside of what is supposed to only be legend.
Yet, this is not completely true.
A small portion of people know of their existence. These people are part of a society of magic users known as the “Augers.” While they don’t have a natural ability to shape shift, they know quite a bit about those who do, next to being scholars of the dark arts. For as long as the society has been in place, they have done everything in their power to learn about these intriguing shape shifters. Unfortunately, it has not been a peaceful search and not without chaos. The Augers became greedy and envious toward the Shifters. Their magic became completely devoted to learning about the shape shifters and the abilities they possessed. The Augers wanted the abilities for themselves and would stop at nothing to have their wishes granted. Many lives were destroyed in this process.
In the twenty-first century, things have only proceeded to get worse between the two. Accompanied by technology, the Augers’ forces have only increased in power, while the Shifters have begun to decrease in their own. The Shifters stilled retained their supernatural abilities, but fighting against the savage forces of the Augers has become more and more difficult. The Augers have begun to have more followers, while the Shifters retain their small size. The Augers have an entire organization devoted to its cause, with resources a plenty. Most of the Shifters were average people, with little money. The Augers’ spells have gotten more complex and controlling. The Shifters’ powers have stayed constant.
Now, with the threat of abduction and cruel experimentation lingering on the edge of their world, the Shifters have much to fear. But the question is not of what they fear, but, rather, will they survive?



The Groups

Shifters have the ability to transform into a certain type of animal. Only one animal’s form are they granted each. However, the Shifters can shift any part of their body to any degree. They can change into their animal forms, their human forms, an anthromorphic combination of the two, or anything in between. They can even just shift certain senses if they please. In addition, they can communicate with the animal they can shift into - even in human form. When approached by another Shifter, they can sense it as well. While it might not directly occur to them at first, it can easily become apparent.

The Augers are mere humans meddling with the supernatural. Their magic is dark, for the most part and very complex. Despite their simple human birth, their magic makes them far more powerful. They specialize in finding ways to allow humans to transform into animals, even if they were not born as a Shifter. All they can manage in that area are intense illusions at the moment. The organization also supplies them with highly developed technology as well in this modern civilization. They are worthy, if not nearing superior at times, as the Shifters’ adversaries


The Place

The setting is a small town in North Carolina during the summer months.
