Calliope

Muse of Epic Poetry: "This poem would be better with aliens."

0 · 1,474 views · located in Purgatory.

a character in “Purgatory Remix”, as played by LovelyLisey

Description

Age: 4,172 years old

Backstage Pass: Is a muse.

Calliope is short and tiny. She has big brown eyes, and she would have long curly black hair, except that she cropped her hair and dyed it blue. Why? Because. She has a penchant for Gothic Lolita dresses because it makes her look cool, and because people are going to assume she's an evil little girl anyway. She has a tattoo of a fox on her upper arm, which she usually hides because otherwise people will try to make drug deals and/or arrest her.

Personality

Calliope is, actually, pretty normal. She tends to be on the quiet side, as she prefers to let other people dominate the conversation. However, she is not unfriendly, as it's hard to go over four thousand years without developing some social skills. She will go to any extreme to protect people that she cares about. Calliope is pretty nice, and she's even kind of wise. But she has a weakness.

Some people are addicted to drinking. Some people are addicted to gambling.

Calliope is addicted to adventure.

If given a choice, she will follow the path of most resistance. She will always follow the rabbit down the hole. If something exciting is happening in Purgatory, Calliope wants to be at the center of it. Fortunately, Calliope's definition of 'exciting' has gotten lax over the years, as alien invasions are a dime a dozen and there's always some bandit stealing pretty maidens away. However, if anything does capture Calliope's attention, she tends to become quite unlike herself. She will risk everything, just to see the adventure through.

History

Calliope is the muse of epic poetry, which means that her hobby is to go into the human world and inspire people to write poetry that is really freaking epic.

Most of the time, she runs Calliope's Tavern in Grand City.

If you want to know her full backstory, just go read up on Greek Mythology. It was pretty much like that. Except probably weirder. Because the truth is always weirder.

Recently, Calliope's adventures have consisted of her brief alliance with The Fox. When the angels abandoned Grand City for Heaven, Calliope hung out with The Fox because he seemed to be the only person trying to do something, although she was not sure what. Then she realized that he was, like, evil and stuff, so she turned tail and joined the Bureau instead. Of course, she soon became bored with the Bureau, and she went back to her tavern. The Bureau still sometimes calls on her for detective work, although she hasn't been very helpful recently. However, the new 'soul murders' have piqued her interest...

Calliope has heightened reflexes and strength as the result of being an immortal creature. She also can fight pretty well with a sword. People often critique her for being cliche for using a sword, but her defense has always been, "Hey! Beowulf taught me!"

So begins...

Calliope looked up, setting her glass down. Ah, the mermaid princess from Atlanta from yesterday. "Yes?"

"Really?" Calliope raised an eyebrow. How intriguing. "What happens when your father gives the signal?"

"Hmmm..." Calliope looked down at the bar for a long moment, holding her chin. "Do you know if any assassins have followed you here, Olivia?" She looked back up at the mermaid princess. "Come to think of it, how did you come to be here?"

"You were pushed? That depends, then. It depends on who pushed you." It also depends on the details of the portal - is it constantly open, or only some of the time? Are there special criteria for traveling through the portal, like you have to be princess or something? "If anyone else knows about the portal, then perhaps they could come here, too."

So it's unclear, in other words. "Well, better to be safe than sorry. I'll make preparations for the event of an assassin. Come to think of it, have you been trained in the art of self-defense?"

"Oh, great! I can teach you! If you don't mind." But the feverish look in her eye indicated that Calliope was set on teaching Olivia, even if she did mind.

Calliope leaned on the bar with her elbow, and rested her chin in her hand. "What sort of weapon would you like? I'm best with a sword. I also know a little about axes, throwing stars, daggers, guns...if you have any magic powers, I might be able to guide you through some of that. I've found that magic isn't too different from poetry."

"Do you have any preference for a weapon or a fighting style?"

"One moment," said Calliope, who went to the door behind the bar. She came out a moment later with two swords in her hand, which she set down on the bar. She went back into the other room (her bedroom) and later came out with another two swords, which she placed to the other two swords. The first sword looked like it was made of glass, completely see-through, with a faint green-blue tinge. The second sword was light and dainty, a fencer's sword, with a golden lion inscribed on the hilt. The third sword was much bigger and heavier, the sort of sword that made people think the wielder was compensating for something. The last sword was completely ordinary-looking. Calliope gestured at the swords on the bar. "These are just a few of the swords from my private collection. We can go to the market later, if you want a sword that is more to your taste. But for now, you can take one of these. Consider it a gift."

Calliope nodded. "I'm a collector."

Calliope nodded. She began to put the swords away, but hesitated at the sword with the golden lion. She put that sword under her bar, thinking that it might come in handy sooner or later. "Actually, I might keep this one. I quite like it. Yes, we can go to the market later, and we can get you a sword, and I can train you. You will find yourself in need of swords training eventually, as a princess."

Someone else might have asked if they were being too pushy about the sword training, but it was not in the nature of Calliope to consider that she might be pushy. Especially not about swords or assassins. "Is there anything else I can do to help?"

Calliope might have been obtuse in general, but even she perceived that Olivia had her mind made up to be as independent as possible. She probably wouldn't ask for further help. Even if she needed it, thought Calliope to herself. "That's good, I'm glad," she said, smiling.

Calliope went back to cleaning her glasses. After a while, a mailman wearing a baseball cap came into the bar. Calliope recognized him as the mailman that had been delivering to her a lot lately. She took the envelope from him - it was from the Bureau. Inwardly, she let out a long, exaggerated sigh. The mailman nodded and left, although he spent a long moment looking at Olivia.

"Which guy? That mailman?" Calliope frowned. "Mailmen are weird, as a rule, even for purgatory. I wouldn't worry about it."
