The land of Nippon is still recovering from the tragedy of the Great War which consumed the entire country for many decades. The war just recently came to an end thanks to the glorious Emperor, who resides in the Capitol which was once the grandest Flagship in the Armada. But in the wake of the war, the people have become oppressed under the feudal system. The only hope the common folk have lies in the tales of Samurai, warriors who fight for the weak and uphold the ideals of justice. But it is said that the Great War wiped out nearly all the Samurai, and so most hope is lost now.

Samurai 7 tells the story of a village named Kanna. The poor villagers live in constant fear, for every year during the harvest a group of bandits known as the Nobuseri come and steal away almost all of the rice that had been harvested that year. The Nobuseri, or bandits, are former samurai who have converted their bodies into large fighting machines during the previous war. Not only that, the bandits are becoming more demanding, now taking women and children in addition to rice.

The elder of Kanna Village has decided that to protect the village they must hire samurai to fight against the bandits. However, the village has no money and thus must find samurai willing to protect the village for a payment of rice. The Water Priestess of the village leaves to attempt to recruit samurai.
