Seeing Double

Sometimes, you just have to accept help...even if you can't stand the other person.

1,194 readers have visited Seeing Double since Crystal Flamedance created it.

Introduction

You would never know it by looking at either of them; you couldn't tell just how different they were. She was a police officer, who particularly hated thieves and burglars. She put most of her effort in work trying to catch those criminals. Her husband seemed supportive of this. Too bad she didn't know until too late. All she knew was, the day she gave birth to twins, one of them disappeared. Shortly afterwards, so did her husband, leaving her to take care of the other twin on her own.

Only a few years later, he came back, trying to explain what had happened. He couldn't really hide it anymore; he was a thief, and a good one at that. The missing twin...she had been taken by a rival, hoping to upset him enough, hoping to make him slip up enough to kill him. He had succeeded, but, even though he claimed to have quit being a thief, she couldn't handle it. So he ran off, and never did get the chance to return the other twin.

Instead, he returned to a life of stealing with his old friends, taking the other twin along, raising her himself. Not to say he didn't have help; his friends had always been more than willing to help him out. So she grew up being a thief. Never once was she told that she was a twin, or that her mother was one of those police officers they tried so hard to avoid. This led to a deep mistrust of those who uphold the law, making her see it as nothing more than a corrupt organization, making and bending the rules to suit their needs.

The other, though, became the opposite. Their mother raised her on her own, with help from what few friends she had. She grew used to helping her mother out in some of her cases. She, too, was kept in the dark, both about her twin and her father. In the opposite situation, she came to hate the thieves, like her mother always had, seeing them as disobedient, reckless fools taking what didn't belong to them.

Years later, an entirely different situation came up. Seemingly overnight, an army arrived at the village to take over, claiming that this was only the start, that soon he would be able to control the entire world. But who was he? No one ever really said, or seemed to be able to explain. The police, who have protected this village to the best of their abilities for so long, are given a choice to either join the ranks, or rot in jail themselves. The villagers can either be slaves, or prisoners, along with the police. And any thief or assassin that comes that way is also given a choice, to either act as a spy or thief or assassin for their leader, or to rot in jail.

The jail quickly became filled with" rebels," many were killed, and very few ever escaped. The rest did indeed join his ranks. Now, whoever "he" is, he clearly isn't one for compromises, and will not take no as an answer, not without punishment, and is plotting to expand his control to more than this tiny village.

And the twins? One of them, raised by an officer, has managed to avoid attention...for now. Currently, she is hiding, looking for a way to get her mother out of jail without being caught herself; not exactly easy when there are so many guards. And the other? She has grown used to travelling, like her father always had, and decided she'd visit the village. The only thing her father ever told her was that this was where she came from. So of course, when she found out what was going on, she decided she needed to help out. Surely a thief can handle something like this!

And this is where the roleplay starts, and things start to get a little...confusing. The twins’ meeting each other for the first time is unavoidable, but...can they trust each other? Can they overcome the differences that have been bred in them? Can they even save themselves from this new tyrant, let alone the village, ad their mother? Let's find out, shall we?

Okay, so obviously you've read through the intro, right? Good. Now, the twin raised by the police is open; I would like to play the other twin. I will let anyone who decides to play the other twin decide on appearances, since they are identical twins and I don't want to force that on your character, and I need to stray away from my usual cast of characters, anyway. In addition, anyone can play a friend of either twin; how are a couple of girls going to do this all on their own, after all? If anyone really wants to play the role of either parent, it's optional, but not required for this rp. The same goes for the tyrant, if anyone wants to take that role.

Additional information: This is a modern day rp, so use modern day equipment. Not everyone is going to have swords to use against the enemy, or be able to block bullets with them. The soldiers of the army are NPC's, unless someone really wants to play one of the soldiers. The village is right on the edge of the ocean, but that doesn't mean you can use a boat to go get help; our tyrant has made sure of that. Now...the ocean is to the east, and along the west side is a range of mountains; very dangerous to try to get through. With forests filled with wild animals to the north and empty, open fields to the south, it's not easy to get away, or for others to get in. So, without help from outsiders, how will they survive each other and save the village at the same time?

Jemima took another glance out into the street. Things were definitely conspicuously clear, and the commotion a couple of blocks away seemed to be increasing. It was now or never. She nodded at Jess and ran light-footedly across the street. The further out they moved, the more apparent it became that not only the soldiers, but a great number of the civilians were being moved to one area. It was a fairly grim indication that somebody was being made an example of.

Progress to the store was easier than anticipated, mainly because there was literally nobody around. Even so, Jemima's heart was thumping in her chest. She approched the alleyway door which she'd always managed to pick to gain entry, and her heart sank as she realised that a padlock had since been fitted. She walked up to it, pressed herself against the wall. She looked up and around for other points of access. Well...Jessamine said she was a thief. If anyone was likely to have any ideas...

"Alright," she whispered, "this is the way I normally get in. Any suggesions?"

Jessamine followed as Jemina ran to the warehouse, glancing around only ocassionally. Chances were she'd need to get used to this soon enough. She was a little worried that they didn't pass anyone on the way. There had only been one gunshot, but now it could have been anyone from the village; there wasn't anyone that was safe. While she had no problem disposing of people who, like her travelling companion before, liked starting problems and fights, people who couldn't even defend herself shouldn't be killed. That was nothing more than a senseless killing.

She glanced around as Jemina stopped, looking around. It was more of a run than se was used to, but not by much. She glanced at the locked door, then looked around the alley. Even though she was raised by a cop, it seemed she could sneak around well enough. At least she wasn't completely uselss, then. She was surprised that Jemina had asked her about suggestions, and turned her attention back to the padlock. It look pretty new; perhaps it hadn't been there before? Or maybe she had a key to the one before, or something.

In any case, this was clearly her sort of thing. She looked around on the ground, hoping to find a small stick or something that might be of some use. There were plenty of them, but not many that were what she wanted. She knelt down to look through them, and finally found one that was what she wanted; small and thin, but still stiff enough to pick the lock with. She stood back up and started working on the padlock, keeping a close eye on it.

"Just keep an eye out, and keep quiet, please...this might take a few minutes..." She had always been used to someone watching her back; she wasn't going to take a chance now. She froze as the twig started to bend a little, and, hoping it wouldn't snap, she repositioned it. After several minutes of searching around, it finally clicked open, and she grinned. She looked back to Jemina.

"Easiest thing I've done since evtering this place."

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Alright...that's one of the two. So I'll send a pm if shmband doesn't reply soon, so that we can get this going again.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

I'm still around. Sorry for the inactivity, I've been kind of swamped with uni work. But I'm ready to start posting again. Just say the word.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Alright, guys...it's been a while since there's been any new posts...I really don't want this to die...not when I did have plans for it. Did you both just kinda...up and leave on me?

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

I apologise also. Awkward living arrangements this week! I'll get back to this soon...

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

That's okay; I've had my modem break down before...only I wasn't even able to get online from my phone. :P

Oh, and I'm sorry it took me so long to post; I've been busy this weekend, but I id find time to post. I'm also sorry it isn't too much to go on...I've been having a bit of writer's block lately. -_-

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Sorry for the absence. My modem broke and it's awkward typing on my phone. I will try to post on Wednesday as I have assessments.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

I don't think him checking on Jemina's mom would spoil the suspense...the twins don't know that she's still alive, after all. Anyway, I'll be trying to think of something for him to do...shouldn't be too hard, really...it'll just take a little bit of thinking. :P

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Short post because I haven't studied for my quiz tomorrow!.

Don't worry too much about Edwin, I don't mind having lurk around for a bit before it's time for him to interact with the twins. The girls should probably get to know each other a bit before they meet him. I'll try and keep him busy. Maybe he can check on the prisoners, he might see Jemima's mum... unless that would spoil the suspense. But if you want to help me keep him occupied for the moment by creating some events, that'd be cool.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Ok...Resurgam, I'll try to come up with something so that you have interaction with someone...or have something to do. I kinda feel bad that your character's out there without anything to do. >_< I'll think of something...maybe a bunch of noise, or something...I'll think on it.

And that's fine; real life comes before rps; I understand that. :P Of course, I kinda have to...with schoolwork and housework to get done. :P

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

I'll post when I can, I'm here there and everywhere today and tonight.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Kindly skip my turn. Not much for Edwin to do at the moment and I'm low on inspiration.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Yeah, that's true. But it also means that, if people start disappearing, as GM I only need to send pms to a few people as opposed to a whole bunch. :P But it also makes planning out little side plots and other twists between rpers a lot easier if there are few people. I had hoped for at least a couple more, but we can make this work. :)

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

S'cool, in a way I like to have some RPs with only a few players because...well, there's fewer people who can slow it down or ruin it by just walking off. ;)

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Okay, so I'll be making the first post some time later tonight (seems there wasn't much interest in this rp, but we can still get it going). Sorry I'm taking so long...school and homework the past couple of days have been a nightmare. But I'll have plenty of time tonight, since I get to really sleep in tomorrow morning. :P

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

If you read the intro and the rules, it says it is a modern time period, so yes, there is modern technology. I like that idea, too...a soldier turning sympathetic. :P Could get interesting.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Looks like it could be interesting. I would like to play a soldier in the tyrant's army who becomes sympathetic to the townspeople and helps the protagonists, if that's OK with you. Also, did you have a particular time/place in mind? Does the town have modern technology?

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

Sure, go for it! It wouldn't require too many people, although I would like for there to be more than just two people, if that's what ends up happening, that'll work.

Re: [OOC] Seeing Double

I'm intrigued by this idea. I also like it because it doesn't look like it'll require a lot of players to make it work. Happy for me to try for the other twin?
