Marian had a very privileged childhood, and even as a teenager, it pained her to see the poor and less well-off. She was in a relationship with Robin of Locksley before he left for the Crusades, and Marian is very bitter about it. The man who she fell in love with preferred honor and glory over her. It was the bitterness and the feelings of betrayal that prompted the Lady Marian to become the Night Watchman, a silent warrior who helped the poor under the cover of night. She has fought against the Sheriff's men in one-on-one combat more times than Robin himself, and once had the luck to briefly spar with Gisborne.
Although Marian has allied herself with Robin and his gang, she is somewhat reluctant to either re-start her relationship with Robin, either as the Night Watchman or as Marian. The Night Watchman's activity is independent from the men in the forest, and tries to avoid being caught up in their plans.
