Shrouded Souls and Shopping Sprees

The city of Hartville is a bustling place. It’s not exactly a metropolis, but its streets still teem with activity. Hartville’s also a very diverse place. You can find all kinds of people hanging around the Avalon Shopping District at any hour of the day or night.

More kinds, in fact, than most residents realize. In this world, the supernatural walk among humans, and even a small fraction of those humans has magic ability. Things could be a lot safer, but at least they stay interesting.

Setting

This roleplay takes place in Hartville, a large and bustling city. Our focus is particularly on the Avalon Shopping District, but that will be described more later.

In Hartville, as in most other parts of the world, the supernatural walk among unsuspecting humans. In their silence they possess freedom. Some use this clandestine position to nibble at the edges of human society. They quietly and methodically play the predator to an unconscious prey. At the same time, many have no such designs. They simply survive, viewing most humans as friends or minor annoyances.

What kinds of creatures live in Hartville? They truly run the gamut. From seraph to siren, naga to nymph, and yes, even the quintessential vampire and therianthrope, you’ll find them here. The main thing that’s standard amongst the various creatures is that, one way or another, they possess the ability to go amongst humans unnoticed. This may mean they simply look identical to humans to begin with, but can also encompass characters who cover up their true nature via transformative (actually transforming into a human form or, potentially, regular animal form), illusory (using a glamour to appear normal even though the user’s body remains unchanged), or physical (using clothes, makeup, etc. to physically cover any nonhuman feature) means. More conspicuous creatures generally remain in much more remote locations.

With the amount of creatures making their home amongst them, it is natural that a few humans are in the know. Most of these humans are the tiny fraction that retains magic passed down for many years through various secret societies. These societies have many different characteristics, but they have one thing in common: they value their secrecy. Anyone who threatens to breach it is viewed as a hazard to the general population of mages. These are people who know how to keep their mouths shuts and their hands clean. A smaller, almost negligible, amount of these enlightened humans are ones who would otherwise be normal but (by accident or confidence) were made privy to the secret world beneath their noses. Again, this is very rare. Most who find out by accident have a tendency to repress their memory or else get it repressed for them. In any case, knowing puts a normal human at risk. The supernatural world is not always a safe one.

Why not? Well, there are those predators, and that’s not all. There are many conflicts among creatures, between mages, and across both groups. Most try to be careful, but recklessness is not unheard of, and accidents do happen. Innocents have been caught in the crossfire. Again, many manage to forget one way or another. Those who remember can become targets.

So what’s the deal with Avalon Shopping District? A shopper’s paradise, they call it, a place where you can find anything. Well, the latter part might be true. Filled with every manner of shop and restaurant, it’s easy to lose yourself there. People come from miles around just to visit its specialties. Most humans don’t realize, of course, but some of those specialties are special indeed. Avalon is a supernatural hub. Many shops are nonhuman- or mage-owned. Some of them even deal in magical items, though few will disperse them to the uninitiated. The general public has no idea what’s really going on, but there are whispered rumors about the creepy things that go down there. Luckily, these are usually written off as schoolchild silliness.

History

The world has long been home to all manner of creature. In a past long forgotten by the likes of most humans, there were fierce wars. The creatures had grown arrogant, almost careless, in the face of human adversaries so devoid of tooth and claw. For a time, the humans suffered, but neither their numbers nor their hopes were quashed. What the others didn’t count on was the sharp increase in magical ability the humans would undergo. After all, necessity is the mother of invention. Rather than be destroyed, the nonhumans fell back and went into hiding.

As time went on, they discovered ways to blend into the crowd, as it were, and the humans were forgetting their past as well as their true strength in times of plenty. A disaster amongst man erased most records of their history, but a few seeds of truth survived. Soon enough, only a handful of humans were privy to the knowledge. Just as the monsters, they liked it that way. So much more could be accomplished when those around you didn’t realize you were capable of it. Oh, sure, secrecy led to some… unfortunate situations down the road when a careless few were discovered by some especially close-minded normal humans, but those with magical powers quickly adapted, and soon the “witch burnings” were nothing but hysteria directed at unfortunate but very unmagical schmucks. Mages lived on in their silence, as did monsters.

Some of the ancient recorded peoples were quite familiar with the nonhuman (one could afford to be less careful in those days), though their accounts often got it wrong. Vestiges of magic also remained in certain religions. However, as science developed, it took the wind out of the sails of myth, and whatever magic remained among most adherents was usually too weak to be noticed or proven. It was all the better for those who wished to remain in hiding. This brings us up to the present.

2. Rules

1. This is a literate roleplay. By personal definition, that means I require good grammar and spelling. I don't expect perfection, but things should be proper overall. Additionally, type RP posts in third person, past tense (ex. She went to the store. She bought some eggs.).There is no minimum post length. I don't care if you post one paragraph or ten as long as your post does what it needs to do. I want quality over quantity.
2. You may play more than one character as long as you can handle them.
3. It should go without saying, but there is to be no godmoding (playing a perfect character who always wins, is never hurt, etc.) or controlling another's character without the player's permission.
4. You must be accepted before you begin posting! Submit your profiles through the “Submit Character” button on the Roleplay tab page. You must use the skeleton provided in the Description box, and you must also fill out the Personality box! But the other two boxes (History and Equipment) are optional. I really hope this isn’t too confusing. Let me know if it is. You don't have to, but I'll probably see your application faster if you give me a head's up in the OOC (it's not reliably notifying me of applications right now). It also might be a good idea to run your profile by me via OOC or PM before you actually submit it (since you don't appear to be able to delete profiles, even if they're rejected), but again, you don't have to.
5. Any OOC chat in IC areas is to be posted in brackets/parentheses/etc. to distinguish it from IC speech. Please keep your OOC to the OOC thread as much as possible.
6. This is a modern fantasy RP. Thus, nothing futuristic is allowed, and your character probably isn’t going to live in a medieval castle unless they’re fabulously rich and completely insane (and in that case, you’d better be an insanely good writer if you want me to accept ‘em xD).
7. 90% of characters in this RP should be able to go amongst humans pretty flawlessly in terms of physical appearance. Any character that cannot do this should be prepared to spend almost all of their time in hiding.
8. You might notice that I didn’t go into plot a great deal. That much is dependent upon the players. Think of it like this: I built you guys a playground. Play on it. You’re expected to stay within the parameters of the setting, of course, but you can build on the stated info. In fact, I encourage you to. You can also feel free to put your own unique spin on any sort of creature - I'm not expecting folklore canon here. Also, if you wish to create a place in the city (such as a shop) give me the information and I may turn it into an official place for you.
9. Yes, I know it’s a lot to read. Please read it anyway. You can skip the “History” section if you want, but the “Setting” is stuff you should at least read once.
10. Please don’t take my decisions as GM personally. I’m a nice person, really. D:

3. Skeleton

Submit this via the Submit Character button on the roleplay page! Remember, you need to put this filled out skeleton in the Description box, but you also need to fill out the Personality category! Equipment and History may be filled out if you like, but those two are optional.

I may ask for a sample if I'm uncertain.

4. Situations

These are our current storylines. I’ll try to update this on a regular basis with what’s going on, but it won’t always be up to date. This might be a good place to look before you create your character or start posting.

OOC Notes

# Avalon Shopping District, 2010-02-09 15:24:58, as written by TheWoodsman
The old man wandered through the shopping district, surveying the area and glancing at the shops around him. It was early morning so none of the shops were open, but that was alright with him. He wasn't here to buy.

The early hour also meant that there weren't very many people around. That suited him just fine as well, as he absolutely despised all living beings.

The old man continued his stroll. His steps were light, almost without sound. They seemed like the steps of a shadow, of something that didn't truly exist. His burgundy clad form was rough, ragged, aged, his facial features matching his worn clothing. Yet even this seemed a facade, a false face shown in the light of day. He seemed like something out of a dream, real but not really existing.

After a timeless moment of almost pointless wandering, the old man ceased his steps. He seemed to be mulling something over in his mind, as he whispered and muttered to himself quite animatedly. This slight moment of neurosis also seemed false, like a show put on for anyone who was watching. Nothing about this man was genuine.

"This place will do," the old man said aloud after much fake internal debate.

He then bent away, out of view, and simply vanished.

Re: Shrouded Souls and Shopping Sprees - OOC - Open!

Would you guys be open to a half-gorgon enchantress who has a job as a magician, but what most humans don't know is that some of her tricks are real magic

Re: Shrouded Souls and Shopping Sprees - OOC - Open!

Alrighty. Basically, everything you need to get started should be set up now. I'll be continuing to flesh out place descriptions a bit and add some new places, but there's no need for you guys to wait on that. I might add a couple of housing areas (apartment complexes and neighborhoods) if you all think that's a good idea. The main area of concentration will of course be Avalon Shopping District.

Man, I'm all excited for this roleplay and also for the Roleplay tab (even if there are some kinks in it). Part of me's going, "What a silly idea. :B" though.

Shrouded Souls and Shopping Sprees Information & IC

Welcome to the OOC for Shrouded Souls and Shopping Sprees, a modern fantasy roleplay. Please visit the link above for much more in-depth info. Feel free to chat, plot, and ask any questions you might have here here.

Summary: The supernatural walk among the unsuspecting crowds of Hartville. Monsters and mages make their way through the city's busy streets under the noses of the ordinary citizens. At least living in secret isn't such a bad life. They can go among the normal humans freely, some of them pacifistic and others predatory. They also remember conflicts long past, and it's not a mistake anyone wants to repeat. That's not to say there are no conflicts today, but these are mostly small and only amongst the supernatural themselves.

There are pluses to living in a city like Hartville, too. Namely, they've got Avalon Shopping Center. This huge complex of shops and restaurants is home to almost anything you could hope to find... and more. Supernatural beings have a definite presence here; many shops are owned by creature or conjurer. Some shops even deal in sorcerous stock.

Basic Info:
  • I must stress that this roleplay is literate. By personal definition, that means I require good spelling and grammar. Occasional typos and mistakes are fine, of course, but things need to be decent overall.

  • Creativity and quality are vastly preferred to sheer quantity. Creativity is especially stressed as there isn't really a set plot. That will be determined by the players. As long as they stay within the established parameters of the setting, players should feel free to flesh out the world, creating places and conflicts of their own.

  • You might want to run your profile by me here in the OOC before actually submitting it. I didn't realize that I didn't much care for the approval system on the Roleplay tab. >.o It's fine if you just submit it, though. If you do just submit, I'll probably get to it quicker if you give post a heads-up here. It doesn't seem to be notifying me of applications properly.
