the nuclear family of the thirteen-year-old girl Harumi is on its way to a new home in Tochinoki, Japan, despite the child's objection. When her father gets lost taking a short cut, they discover a mysterious entryway through a tunnel; on the other side thereof, is strange, beautiful, grassy landscape, which they assume to be an abandoned theme park. The parents investigate and find a deserted stall piled with food. They start eating and soon lose control of their hunger. Harumi, warned by some intuitive distrust, refuses the food.

Harumi wanders away by herself, later to discover an enormous bathhouse. Suddenly, a boy somewhat older than herself appears and warns her to leave before dark. She runs back to the stall, only to find that her parents have turned into pigs. As night falls, shadowy spirits fill the park, and Harumi starts becoming transparent. The boy appears again and coaxes her to eat food from the spirit world, which will keep her from disintegrating. He then leads her across the bridge leading to the bathhouse, warning Harumi that the slightest breath can reveal her presence. They cross the bridge; however, a froglike spirit startles Harumi into exhaling, revealing herself. After rapidly bringing her to safety, the boy gives her detailed instructions by which to get a job at the spirits' bathhouse, which he says is the only way to survive. His name is revealed to be Shio.

Characters


Harumi Saito

Harumi is the 13-year old protagonist of the rp. Harumi is in the process of moving to a new town when her family stumbles upon the entrance to the spirit world. During her adventure she matures from a whiny, self-centered, and pessimistic child to a hard-working, helpful, optimistic young girl. She is re-named "Umi" by the proprietor of the bathhouse, Yubaba.

Shio

A young boy who helps Harumi after her parents have transformed into pigs. He helps protect her from danger and gives her advice. Shi works as Yubaba's direct subordinate after the previous, Haku, Quit. often running errands and performing missions for her. He has the ability to fly and to transform into a dragon. Yubaba views him as a mere tool.

Yubaba (湯婆婆, Yubaaba?, lit. "bath crone")

An old witch with an inhumanly large head and nose, who supervises the bathhouse. She reluctantly signs Harumi into a contract, taking her name and re-naming her "Umi" in order to hold power over her for the duration of the contract. Yubaba has an over-bearing and authoritarian personality, but she does show a soft side toward her giant baby, Boh. In contrast to her simple and hospitable sister Zeniba, Yubaba lives in opulent quarters and is only interested in taking care of guests for money.

Kamajii (釜爺, lit. "boiler old man"?)

An old man with six arms, who runs the boiler room of the bathhouse. A number of Susuwatari (ススワタリ, Susuwatari?) (Soot balls) work for him, by carrying coal into his furnace. He has a large cabinet where he keeps all the herbs that are used in the baths. After some persuasion, he allows Chihiro to work at the bathhouse and even pretends to be her grandfather to protect her, though this ruse does not stand for long.

Lin (リン, Rin?)

A worker at the bathhouse who becomes Harumi's caretaker. she warms up to Harumi and grows a strong bond with her, saying she sees a lot of some girl named "Sen" in her.


Isao Saito

Harumi's father. Isao's impulsive behavior catalyzes the unfolding of events in the beginning of the Roleplay, climaxing in his transformation into a pig.

Kasumi Saito

Harumi's Mother's mother who, along with Harumi's father, is turned into a pig at the start of the Rleplay. she is also the daughter of Chihiro/"Sen"

Kashira (カシラ, Kashira?)

A trio of green, disembodied, wall-eyed heads living in Yubaba's office that move around by bouncing. They do not speak except in small grunts when they bounce about.

Zeniba

Zeniba is Yubaba's twin sister and rival. Although identical in appearance, their personalities are almost polar opposites.
