King Lucan Turin Sulfari

Love comes once in a lifetime, if it comes at all. My love lies with my country, my people, and my son. My loyalty to them before myself.

Description

King Lucan Sulfari

Role
King of Notia

Job
On a bad day, he calls himself a slave. On a good day, he calls himself a King. Yet, both are correct in their own way. Like a slave, he was born into his position and has little choice but to do that job. Nevermind if he wanted to become a farmer (which he didn't) he always knew that he was going to become King. He is the King of Notia, and does his best by his people. Yet, sometimes his best isn't enough and the weight of the world is heavy on his shoulders. He does his best, often has open sessions to hear about how his people are doing and what they wish could happen. He is the judge/jury and executioner. He does not shy away from doing his duty. He is known to be a kind King, one that has never married and seemingly had no desire to ever marry, though if that is the case, it remains to be seen.

Age
38

Gender
Male (sex is also Male)

Appearance Description
6'9, pale skinned and dark haired and dark eyed, the man seems to be a walking nightmare as his intense gaze will often make people that have something to hide hope that the King will not speak to them. His hair is kept short, styled away from his face and his left ear is pierced, symbolic of his people to signifying either a loving marriage... or a great loss. No one has never grown close enough to the King to understand what his earring means. His eyes are black, black enough to where his pupils can't be discerned from his eye color. Rumors flew that the King is a creature from Nightmares, yet his kindness has long since tempered that rumor. His body is lean, though fit as he prefers horseback riding and swimming to more labor intensive activities. His hands, unlike those of his same rank, are rough from hard work as he is often seen helping out a farmer fix fences or helping in building a barn if he hears that a farmer is having difficulties. When he is speaking to adults, he is serious and seemingly cold and aloof, yet around children or those in inferior rank, he is often seen smiling and talking to them openly. He makes sure that his people trust him to help them, and in that... he hopes that the trust and respect that goes both ways will prevent his people from having an uprising against him, and so far, it has worked. His fingers are long and slender, his nose has a sharp bend in the bridge from where he had gotten into a fist-fight as a young man and it had been broken and poorly set, since he didn't want his mother to find out that he was fighting and had done it himself.

Armor/Clothing
His outfit changes based on what he is doing. If he is helping a farmer, then he strips down to no shirt and his pants/shoes. The earring remains in his ear, but all other jewelry is taken out. His pants tend to remain black, his shoes are black, and his shirt is nearly always white. He prefers not to wear ties, as they constrict around his neck, but if he has no choice, he will do so.

His dress-clothes for formal occasions is an outfit that is completely black, with a red insignia of a phoenix emblazoned on the right pocket, the mark of his people and country. He wears a black blazer, black pants, a ceremonial sword to his right (that is not sharp, for he has his magic that he uses as his primary mode of defense. The sword is just there to mark him as the Ultimate defender of his people. His hair is a bit more messy at this point. He wears riding boots, always, often the mark that regardless of what he is wearing, he will be ready to move at a moment's notice. He wears the "Jewels of the Crown" normally a ring on his left middle finger, which is also the same ring that he will press into wax to mark his sign, it also has a raised phoenix on it, a silver circlet that serves as his crown, a cross necklace that is left out for everyone to see, and he tends to have one of his hunting hounds to his left, walking with him.

His military uniform is the last uniform that people tend to see him in. He wears what would would call his "dress Uniform" which entails a combination of blue and white. A blue overcoat embroidered with gold filigree, that buttons down the center of the chest until it reaches the waist and from there, the coat cuts at a sharp angle, emphasizing the masculine form of his waist and legs, while it sweeps behind him. His pants are white, his boots are black, and go over the pants, ending up at the knee. The normal "uniform" that he wears is one that is still blue and white in coloration but has no gold filigree, and has epaulettes on each shoulder. Both have a small red phoenix on the black top, and three silver stars to denote his rank as Commander.

Skills
He is an Inherent Magic User (meaning that he does not have to be trained in how to use or control his magic, but it comes through birth (and his parentage). He does not need to count on spells, or laws, he simply has to know which of the three ways to use it. Black (which harms others, and a ghost of that pain comes back on himself), Grey (which will be able to aid non-humans (animals, plants, a small amount of control over the weather, but only enough to bring a little bit of rain if there is a drought) and White (which he uses the most, and is the generalized healing magic. It is why his people often do not catch any sort of epidemic.)

He is also a dedicated horseman and loves those creatures nearly as much as he loves his hounds. His mother used to say that he was born on the saddle, as she had gone into labor with him while she was out on her daily ride.

He can use a sword to fight in, but again, he nearly always depends on his magic or those that guard him to see to his defense.

Lucan is a good singer, but he was trained to be so, since in his country, musical skill is encouraged. People love to hear the King sing and look forward to festivals and holy-days so they can hear him lift his rich voice up and welcome in the new season.

Lucan speaks a variety of languages, because they had been drilled into him by his mother. He has a strong education, fit for his status, and knows geography, strategy, and philosophy. He is often found in his library at night, drinking spiked tea and reading through a book, taking careful notes in the margins.

Phobias / Fears
He is terrified that his son will be killed/kidnapped or some other ill-will will befall him. While his son was "adopted", the king has never seen him in any other way than a son, and has treated him with all the love and discipline that a good parent would treat his child. Because the King had accepted the child, his people accept the child and the King has made sure that his son is fit to rule the Kingdom when Lucan gets to be too old.

He doesn't like spiders. He doesn't freak out but he does shudder and has to fetch someone to come in and dispose of it. It comes about from when he was small and one of the children locked him into the cellar that had spiders and spider webs. He had to put up with spiders crawling over him until one of the servants heard him yelling and beating on the door and came to fetch him.

He has a strong fear of fire, also stemming from his childhood. The left side of his back, crossing over his shoulder, was burned when his barn caught on fire and he was rushing to save his horses. His nightshirt caught on fire and burned him. He remembers the pain vividly and will not allow fires to be lit in rooms unless there are people there to watch it, making sure that it won't catch on fire.

Bad Habits / Vices
He is a strong smoker. He always tells his son not to worry because he won't die from the cigarettes, but the King does tend to crave them often. When he doesn't have them, he often has a pen flitting through his fingers as if he always need to have a cigarette in his hand. He also drinks, though never enough to become inebriated. He considers it a destressor. He is also a man that suffers heavily from lust, as his people have come to know. While the King has never married, he does have people that he sleeps with, though none of them are ever able to come close to being the person that he wants to marry.

Best Qualities
His kindness becomes one of his best qualities, and his willingness to come down from his "god given throne" and help his people. He is a strong mediator, with military experience since he was never meant to be king, originally.

Worst Qualities
He does have a temper, with a short fuse, especially when it comes to violence and abuse towards his people. He will not tolerate men hitting their women and children, rape, or any sort of violent acts. He is more prone to levy strong punishments to those sort of crimes and never gives any mercy to a person that would kill another. While he is kind, it would be best to remember that he is still king and he is the one that uses his sword, Flame, to end the lives of many that are deemed "evil". He has a strong sense of justice, but with his temper, he is often heard yelling at his Valet (whom is also his best friend, and the one that broke his nose when they were younger) and at times, he will even yell at his son, but most people know that the king's temper lies only in his heated words, and he will never physically lash out at someone unless it is in punishment for a crime committed.

Goals
He wants to see his son happily married, to whomever he falls in love with. The King is more concerned with his son finding someone that he can love and will serve next to him, and not just based on royalty and bloodline, since his mother was a common woman that his father had fallen in love with, and it was his parents that had brought his country to such a rich, though small, nation.
-To establish a strong horse breeding farm.
-To see his country continue to prosper
-To set up an education system for the children.

History
His mother, Lady Heven, was a woman that worked with horses and was from a different country, part of a nomadic tribe. His father, Anders, fell in love with the strong willed woman and set to courting her. She refused until she saw the barn with all of the horses that could be hers. She agreed to marry the king, unable to turn such a thing down. Love between them grew slowly, and their relationship was almost ruined when she birthed twin boys, two boys whom were named Anderson and Lucan. Twins were considered a bad omen to her race, but a good omen to the King's, so they had to reach a compromise. Logan would become King and would be trained for royalty and Lucan would be trained to be within the royalty. Lucan was passed off as the King's bastard son, and was given very few rights, though Anders loved his son dearly.

Lucan became close with his younger sister, Halebelle, and they were often inseparable, but she was also close with Anderson, and she became the reason that the brothers were able to tolerate one another and weren't constantly trying to main the other. Halebelle refused to get married, which her parents did not like, but Lucan had made her a promise. He would not marry until she did, and he held true to that promise. He wanted to make sure that his sister was safe and happy with her lover before he would allow himself the same right.

Lucan was trained to fight and use his inherent magic and not allow his magic to use him. He became strong in infusing his magic into his weapons, but also in healing, since it was clear from the start that Lucan was a healer by trade, and a kindhearted child. Lucan and Anderson did not get along, but when Logan got sick when he was fifteen, Lucan raced to his side and tried to heal him. It wasn't possible as the Piper (what Lucan's people call Death) had already claimed the young man. After Anderson's death, Lucan was brought forward and made to be the heir to the Kingdom. At seventeen, his mother died in a horse-back riding accident, snapping her neck, and the King wasted away out of grief for his wife. Lucan was suddenly the King, forced to do Kingly duties that he wasn't fully trained in, and if it wasn't for Hallebelle, he would have failed. She became (and still is) his best adviser, though she has long since married to Lucan's Valet. Lucan learned through trial and error what to do for his people, and he gained a reputation for being kind and just. Though his temper was something that equally spread around the country. Gifts of horses were often sent to the king on his birthday, which the King enjoys, though he always tells people that he would much rather they save the horses for themselves, as he knows how important the horses are for them as well.

When he was only a few years into his Kingship, he found a child on his doorstep. Confused, the King took the child in, intent on only keeping him until he could find a family that would love the child. Instead, it was the King that fell in love with him. He named him Lorcan, which was close to his own name of "Lucan" something that fathers tended to do with the first born son. He named the child as his heir after four years of waiting for the child's parents to come back, and set to raising the child in a way that was both kind, but just, same as he ruled his people. It wasn't uncommon to see Lucan bringing his young son along on his pony as they went to inspect the kingdom, or to see the child sitting in on important meetings, with Lucan answering Lorcan's questions as the child asked them. No matter how many times the child asked them.

Of course, all good things must come to an end, and since Lucan never married... and there is trouble brewing... he has no choice (he feels) than to go and woo the Queen. He knows that his son doesn't like the idea of him doing that, but like Lucan always says, his happiness comes last. It goes Country, People, Lorcan.... and down the line comes Lucan. No matter that Lucan would never love the Queen, he will set out to try and marry her, in the hopes that his kingdom will be protected and their peaceful life can carry on uninterrupted.

Other Important Details

A note on his magic: His magic is something that is inherent. He doesn't need spells or runes to do it. His magic is tied and part of his soul. Something that he draws upon and forms with his thoughts and desires. When he has to kill a criminal, he infuses his blade with magic so that the kill is quick. When he has to heal, the magic goes into his hands so he can seek and repair the damage. He does get tired if he expends too much, and it comes back after he rests, but it is not something that can be "taken" from him.

His swords:

A picture of his favorite hound:

Image Named: Michan and while the hound looks incredibly awkward, the creature is fast, and loyal. His first hound was Michan's grand-sire, and the family line for the dogs has gone on for years, since his great-grandfather started keeping hounds. Michan goes with Lucan everywhere. He goes to meetings, on outings, to formal events and even sleeps at the foot of the king's bed. The dog has been trained to sniff out different poisons, as Lucan has had assassination attempts made on him before.

His Valet and Sister, together:

Image His valet is his best friend and his sister is his confident. Both valet and his sister have helped in raising Lucan's son. His valet is also his bodyguard, and trained in the art of protective magic.
