Introduction
It's the beginning of the Prohibition era in New York and gang warfare is rife among speakeasies that are popping up all over the city. Undercover activity is just around every corner and the districts are rife with promiscuity, bootlegging and on occasion even the odd murder; there is no mistaking that the roaring twenties are in full swing.
This particular year is 1924 and the setting? The Cotton Club, an infamous speakeasy located in the heart of New York City. The club holds a group of regulars that live for the thrill of lawlessness that the club offers, using their complicated social webs to acquire the changing passwords of the social bar that everybody is dying to join. The Cotton Club is run by none other than Kurt Koran, a middle aged gentleman who has a particular love for cigars and good whiskey. He's slowly building his New York empire, with three speakeasies under his belt already, Please don't tell included, and a gang of gentlemen to control, who are collectively better known as The Daybreak Boys. He has a group of 50-100 men scattered across New York, all of whom can identify each other from the small yellow circular badge that can be find pinned to their suit coat.
Our story starts at The Cotton Club, the time is 7pm and the night is young. Kurt has set up the club in preparation for a night that it's members will never forget. Glitz and glamour can be found in every corner, cheap alcohol flowing smoothly through the night, bar staff complete finishing touches to sparkling decorations that adorn the walls and in the far left corner of the room, a jazz band sets up, eagerly awaiting the first customers of the night...
Characters
Kurt Koran [SilentButterflies]
John Jaleppi, 25 [OPEN]
Older brother to George, John is Kurt's right hand man. He's somewhat of an assistant manager to The Daybreak Boys, making sure they're all fulfilling their jobs and making sure that any unfinished jobs don't go unpunished. He's a quiet sort of character, very stern and you'll rarely see him smile. He's not so much liked as he is feared. People find him unpredictable and tend to sneak around him as though he could explode at any given moment. George is his younger brother, whom he feels he has to look out for, despite the younger man's seething hatred for him. He's recently found a kindred soul in Zelda Waters.
George Jaleppi, 21 [OPEN]
Member of The Daybreak Boys and self-sworn enemy of his older brother John Jaleppi. George is constantly attempting to get one over on John, mainly by impressing Kurt so that he can climb his way to the top and place himself as his boss's right hand man. George isn't an unkind soul, but he's become somewhat twisted by his desire for power. He's been known to use the loosening social structures to his advantage, having been through most of the women in The Cotton Club, and many of the surrounding speakeasies come to that, including Zelda, something which his brother knows nothing about... yet. He's also clueless to Dorothy Delight's true feelings.
Zelda Waters, 24 [SilentButterflies]
One of the more mature flappers of The Cotton Club, Zelda can be found in the club every night in her finery, often accompanying wealthy men who have hired her services for the night. Don't get her wrong though, not those kind of services, just pure company for the older gentleman. More than a pretty face however, what The Cotton Club doesn't know is that Margaret is working secretly for a rival mob, The Midnight Runners, and gathers vital information on The Daybreak Boys most evenings. This is why she spent the night with George, and this is why she intends on getting a lot closer to John.
Dorothy Delight, 20 [RESERVED]
An entertainer at The Cotton Club, if she's not dancing the Charleston she's singing to the lonely hearts of the club. Relishing the recent liberation of women, Dorothy likes to give some of the men a run for their money with hard liquor and has a bit of a an easy reputation, not that that is anything to be frowned upon these days. But maybe there's more to it than people think? From the moment she laid eyes upon George Jaleppi, Dorothy became somewhat infatuated with the man, and wishes he would notice her atop the other girls he likes to spend most of his time with.
Robert Rein, 35 [OPEN]
Another member of The Daylight Boys, Robert found himself involved in bootlegging when his respectable job as an accountant came undone under the most unfortunate of circumstances (you have freedom to choose which circumstances). Formerly a very good egg, Robert feels nothing but guilt at his new unreliable way of life, but he is willing to try anything to provide for his wife, Betty and their daughter Virginia. Although working for Kurt is proving to be no easy meal ticket, and Robert often finds himself drowning his sorrows in a bottle of whiskey to escape the reality that is slowly eating away at his pride and at his family relations.
Betty Rein, 30 [OPEN]
Husband of Robert and mother to Virginia, Betty can only be described these days as an alcoholic. Choosing to spend her nights with a martini and music at The Cotton Club rather than at home with Virginia, Betty is a shell of what she once was. Constantly craving the affections of her husband, whom she is convinced only attends the club to meet a mistress (whom she thinks is Zelda in this case), the two often come to blows at the end of the night, usually helping each other home to start another day of their seemingly destructive relationship. There is no denying their love for each other however, even if it is currently disguised as hatred.
