Kisei glanced quickly between Hatsue and Fa Sheng, and in that instant seemed to understand more about the situation than either one of them understood on their own. On bare, silent feet, in a fluttering of robes, the boy moved quickly close to Hatsue. He leaned up on his toes just a bit to whisper in her ear, small as he was. His voice came through barely loud enough for her to hear, velvety smooth, terrifying at the same time as it was reassuring.

"Fear nothing of my brother, Lady Hatsue," he whispered. "He is shy. Does not know how to share you, yet, with our people. He will show you to them in his own time."
As quickly as he had approached, he stepped back again, raising one hand to cover a light cough. The remnants of the illness in which Kazumi had first found him. Non-contagious, but still weakening. He did not seem to notice the action himself, eyes flickering across to his elder brothers. He focused on Daiki. The smile he gave the middle brother was genuinely fond, and equally devious. "I trust you two will have much to talk about on your ride," he observed. It was clear in his tone, though not to Fa Sheng - Kisei expected Daiki to be the first to broach the subject of an heir.

He turned on his heel again, gesturing to Kazumi.
"Come," he murmured. "We will bother Lady Hatsue again later, when she has settled in. Farewell."
He was gone as he had come. In a whirlwind of activity incompatible with the frailty of his body, and understating of the energy in his mind.

Fa Sheng watched him go through undeniably wild eyes. He gave himself a light shake.
"It is difficult to believe," he observed in a voice which was just a bit shrill, "that two days ago he could not stand." He left it unsaid that sometime in the next two days, though it was not certain, Kisei could very well be unable to stand again. That was just how unpredictable his illnesses were. Swallowing tightly, regaining control of himself in his younger brother's wake, Fa Sheng turned to Hatsue. "My apologies. As I have said, Kisei is drawn to political activity. He will be must more... pleasant... when things have calmed down."
_______________________________________________

Kisei waited until he had lead Kazumi out of his family's earshot before letting out a high, bell-like laugh. He turned to her, eyes shining with true pleasure.
"She is perfect for him," he told her fervently. "I could never have foreseen things would work out so well."

This was it. His plans were coming to fruition. Fa Sheng would be happy now, eventually. He had only Daiki left to deal with. Only Daiki left to make happy... then he would not have to worry, anymore, about what would happen to his brothers when his weakness finally claimed his life.

Hatsue smiled pleasantly as Kisei drew closer, leaning forward slightly so he could better access her ear. At his words, however, the young princess's eyes grew wide with disbelief. Had he known that very thought passed her mind only moments before? Of course he couldn't. And still, a chill caused Hatsue to draw upon herself as Kisei stepped back, almost as if he had passed along some of the cool of his own body upon her.

At his cough, Hatsue raised her hand to her own lips. Not because she feared to catch whatever ailment he had, but because she was unsure if she could keep from voicing the question of how did he know the very thoughts in her mind. Her gaze flickered to Fa Sheng who seemed equally bewildered. In her dull state, Hatsue was unable to bid the prince good-bye. She awoke to Fa Sheng's words, turning and smiling softly. "He is very... perceptive," Hasue murmured, praying that Fa Sheng did not hear the condolence that Kisei had offered to her. Hatsue shivered softly and then yawned, quickly covering her mouth in embarrassment. "Forgive me, Fa Sheng. I was traveling for most of the day and..." she sighed softly, chuckling in a silent joke she hoped Fa Sheng would sympathize with. "My father told me of his plans for peace earlier in the week. I have not had much rest since then in worry of how you would respond."

Daiki blinked and turned red to Kisei's words, understanding the hidden cue behind them. It seemed everyone but Fa Sheng was thinking of the possibility of an heir with this princess. Apparently Kisei thought their ride together would be a convenient time to let the emperor in. Silently, Daiki snickered to himself. Fa Sheng may be the eldest, but he seemed to be the most clueless about women. He looked up as Hatsue yawned, sympathetic when hearing her tale. The poor thing must have been worried sick over being the key to the peace of her land. That was too much for anyone to sleep well over.

"Why don't you show lady Hatsue to her room? I can fetch the horses," Daiki offered. As much as Fa Sheng wanted to share her with his brothers, exhausting the princess now would lead to no hope of having an heir. And now that she seemed to understand that she would not be returned, exhaustion was clearly printed in her features.

Kazumi blinked, unsure by the excitement that Kisei had. As he suddenly turned to leave, she was left unguarded by his fragile frame. Bewildered, she bent into a low bow, murmuring, "It is a pleasure to meet you lady Hatsue," before scampering off after Kisei.

Kazumi stopped short, nearly crashing into the prince as he began laughing. She listened to him carefully, fully understanding there was something she was missing. "You act like you planned for this to happen," Kazumi said casually, glancing back towards the princess. "She is very pretty, though. I cannot see anyone not approving of this match." She shrugged and turned back to Kisei. "What did you say to her? I couldn't hear."

Fa Sheng glanced around, gazing at Hatsue's face. She did seem rather tired... more exhausted then Fa Sheng had realized, in his excitement. Or perhaps not - perhaps she had been putting up a mask to improve her chances of acceptance. An unnecessary gesture, to anyone who knew Fa Sheng and his brothers, but to someone who had not seen the trio since they were children... Fa Sheng felt guilt twist deep in his chest. He should have noticed. Kisei had, he had no doubt of that. Once again he was struck with the knowledge that were he healthier, Kisei would make the better emperor.

Sighing quietly, smiling wryly to himself, he held his hand out to Hatsue.
"Come," he suggested quietly. "I will bring you to your rooms. You need rest." He gave a small laugh. "I think that our kingdoms will sleep soundly from now on."
____________________________________________________________________

Kisei waved his hand in dismissal of her question, excited to the point of breathlessness. It had happened. Finally. His brother had someone.
"A reassurance," he answered in his thin voice, his words hissing through lungs that threatened to close up again. "The girl was nervous. Afraid that Fa Sheng would send her back if she displeased him." He gazed at Kazumi, eyes brilliant. Suddenly he seemed again to be that sweet, clever young boy he had been when they first met. The boy he was underneath all the shielding and political intrigue he used to entertain himself. "Don't you see, Kazumi? He won't be alone anymore. He won't be alone when I die."

To this, Daiki nodded and stepped away towards the stable so he could take out the horses. There were three purebreds in the main stable. One for each of the princes as a gift from their grandfather before Kisei's condition was made known to the public. It saddened Daiki that this steed was never ridden, but he could not bring himself to take out Kisei's horse without him. And the young prince was in no condition to ride. Leaning against the wall, Daiki waited for Fa Sheng, mental rehearsing dialogue that Kisei as all but ordered him to say.

Hatsue smiled softly, honestly, and accepted Fa Sheng's hand. She liked the way he escorted her around the palace himself rather then through servants as one of her friend's husbands had done. She liked that the first thing he wanted her to do was meet his brothers. Most of all, she loved how he offered her his hand whenever they traveled together. To Hatsue, this was not only a symbol of unity, but of equality. Females were often left to follow their husbands, but when holding his hand it allowed Hatsue to walk side by side with him.

"I agree," she said softly, not resisting in the slightest as she was led deeper into the palace. As they entered the room, Hatsue gasped softly as it was more than she could have ever expected. She smiled and shook her head, turning back to him. "Thank you, Fa Sheng. For everything. Now go off with Daiki and enjoy your time together. I will be fine until you come back. If anything, I'll just be napping."

To this, Kazumi's jaw slacked, her eyes growing wide with shock. She straightened, babbling softly in confusion and unsure how to respond to this. Her fist clenched and then released itself slowly as she breathed deeply to clear her mind. It almost seemed as if he was planning his death....

"He would never be alone. He has Daiki and the rest of the empire," Kazumi babbled, shaking her head. "And because he has a wife now, this does not give you permission to die!" she all but shouted at him. Kazumi did not understand why this statement angered her so much. "You can't die, not yet. I just met you," she whimpered, ashamed of herself.

Fa Sheng hesitated for a moment, still holding onto her hand. It was small and warm and soft against his sword-calloused fingers. He found that he... wanted to hold it. Unusual for him. The only women he had ever spent very much time with was his mother, and somehow whenever she was near all eh wanted to do was squirm out of her grasp. Things were different with Hatsue. It seemed too good to be true that he already felt so deeply attached.

He did, however, force himself to release her, smiling slightly. He bowed.
"Please rest well," he murmured. "I will see you again when we return."

He left her to her rest, returning to Daiki in the stables. He did all in his power to avoid looking at Kisei's untouched stallion, swinging onto the back of his own steed and glancing at Daiki with the very first flutterings of excitement. So very long since they had ridden together through the forests and fields and rice paddies...

"Shall we?" he asked, gesturing for Daiki to lead the way. It was not every day that the Emperor got to follow someone.
__________________________________________________

Kisei was startled by her reaction. He stopped breathing in his surprise, staring at her, and flinched when she shouted. It was incredible, how violently she had reacte dto his words. He could not comprehend, could not discern why-
Ah...
Furrowing his brow, he gazed at her with new eyes. A new look. You can't die, not yet. I just met you. What a strange thing to say. 'You should not be so ready to die,' he had expected, but this? Were he a lesser man he might have taken offense - it was alright for him to die after they had known one another for a while?! He was, however, not a lesser man. He was Kisei.

Taking a deep breath, he faced Kazumi square on, unflinching now. Unafraid.
"No one can run away from the truth," he told her quietly. Too quietly. He could barely make the air form words, his chest had grown so painfully tight as he was thinking. "I have to prepare. Any day... could be my last."

Hatsue smiled softly, watching as Fa Sheng turned to leave the room. She did not feel that it was necessary for her to call out after him and wish him well with his ride. Hatsue already knew he would enjoy himself. It was written in his eyes and in Daiki's stern stare that they would enjoy each other's presence. It was good for brothers to spend time together. Hatsue only wished that Kisei was not also left out. Perhaps eventually a more suitable activity could be found.

Hatsue's eyes lingered over the room slowly, grateful to find that her belongings had been brought in by a servant earlier in the day. A nap would do her well, but even she was not tired enough to sleep in her uncomfortable formal attire. She dug through her trunks thoughtfully, deciding at last on a simple robe to sleep in. At last, tired beyond possible and thankful that she had only brought honor upon her family, Hatsue crawled upon the futon and laid on her side, waiting for comfortable sleep to overcome her.

Daiki grinned as Fa Sheng came in and leapt onto his own horse. Even the beasts seemed excited as the brother's horses had not ridded together in some time now. They whinnied in protest to how long it was taking before Daiki yipped and sent his own horse forward. At the edge of the palace, Daiki dug his heels into the horse's side to increase speed, glancing at Fa Sheng to race him forward. They passed many towns and villages before Daiki slowed to a trot, laughing and smiling to his elder brother as they had not raced in many years.

Stroking the mane of his horse, Daiki breathed deeply to catch his breath. "Hatsue seems to be a good match for you," he gasped , grinning at his brother. "She is polite, interested in our kingdom, and beyond that extremely beautiful. What do you think of her?"

Kazumi looked down, ashamed of her outburst. It was more than she had wanted to admit to the young prince. She sighed, raising her eyes to meet his and was shocked by what she saw. For someone who had accepted death to easily, there was strength behind his eyes. More strength than Kazumi thought she could ever have.

She opened her mouth but then closed it quickly, fearing that she would say something stupid once again. "You worry too much about other people," she murmured softly, shifting between her feet. "You are trying to replace yourself in their lives but that is impossible. I may not have known you long, but no one can replace you Kisei." Kazumi shook her head softly and stepped forward, noticing that his voice and body language echoed of pain. She had enough of this conversation for now anyway."Come, you should settled down. We do not want t disturb the lady as she rests."

Fa Sheng rose in his saddle, urging his stallion forwards to match paces with Daiki's. His heart hammered in his chest, unaccustomed to the thrill of the ride. Graying hair slipped from its binds to stream along behind him, carefree for once. A broad grin split his face as they flew across the land, by towns and villages and farmsteads. They rode so fast that Fa Sheng doubted any of the commoners recognized the two fine-robed men. That was fine with him. He had always missed the relative anonymity of prince-hood. Even then he had been unable to walk alone - now he could not walk beyond the palace at all. At least, not for less than official reasons.

If his advisers knew he was riding like this... but he did not care about that now.

It was with regret that Fa Sheng finally reined in, drawing to a halt beside Daiki. He, too, was breathless with excitement, his face flushed and his eyes brilliant. He smiled at his younger brother, seeming almost a boy again. He listened, practically shivering with adrenaline, to what Daiki had to say. Though at the mention of Hatsue, his face softened, his spirits did not dampen in the slightest.

"She is more than I had ever hoped for," Fa Sheng answered, shaking back a iron-gray strand of hair. "She made me laugh today."
The statement seemed inconsequential, but Daiki of all people knew how difficult it was to make him laugh, these days. Even riding as they just had, he did not laugh. Only beamed.
________________________________________________________

Kisei fixed Kazumi with leveled eyes. He was willing to cease the argument - but only if he'd had the last word.
"No one can replace me," he agreed flatly. "But it is better than leaving behind a gaping wound."

Kisei would have argued further, but Kazumi was right. Hatsue would be trying to sleep, and his chest was tight from lack of air. He turned on silent feet, crossing the room to his bed. His robes whispered lightly against the matting as he traveled, folded to sit on the bed. The conversation still hanging in the back of his mind, he rolled onto the futon, lay down on his side. He said nothing to Kazumi of the effect of this exciting, and rather stressful, morning. If she figured it out, good for her. If not... he wold sleep it off. He cared little either way.

Daiki grinned, laughing where Fa Sheng was unable to. "She made you laugh? That's something indeed," he agreed. Daiki sighed softly and shook his head, tilting his face towards the sky. Fa Sheng liked her. That would make his mission from Kisei all that easier.

Clicking his tongue, Daiki ushered his horse forward into a slow trot. "If I were you, I would not wait to long to announce her presence to the empire. They will adore your secret marriage, but they may become dissapointed if she is with child already when they first meet her." Daiki tossed his gaze over his shoulder, unsure what to say. "She will be with child eventually... Right, brother? You still need an heir." Damn Kisei.... Why couldn't he just do this himself?

Kazumi crossed her arms and shuffled after Kisei. Emotions mixed inside of her, anger, rage, sorrow, and embarrassment. Why had she shouted at the prince?

Kisei settled down on the bed with Kazumi's dark eyes trained upon him. At last, she sighed heavily and closed her eyes before closing the gap between them and sitting behind his back. "I'm sorry, Kisei," she said softly, looking away from him. "I didn't meant to shout or insult you. I'm.... Sorry."

Kazumi sighed, closing her eyes running her hand through her hair. "I'm still not good at being your attendant. Is there anything I can do for you?"

Fa Sheng urged his stallion after Daiki's, falling into an easy trot. The sun shone brightly, glittering off of the silver and gold thread in his imperial robes, shining off of his hair which, in spite of the gray, still glowed lush with youth. He was smiling, positively jovial at the recent turn of events. For just one, short instant, it seemed as though all of his troubles had come to a very sudden, satisfying end.

Until his brother mentioned children.

Fa Sheng's smile faltered, then faded away, replaced by the eerie calm which had come to be known as the face of Emperor Fa Sheng. He glanced away from Daiki, surveying their surroundings with a crease of worry in his brow, a look of sadness in his eyes. His entire demeanor changed, and when it did, somehow he ceased to be Katsuro.

"I suppose there will have to be," he whispered, watching a bird fly overhead. "The throne is insecure."
He sounded for all the world as though he did not want children. A ridiculous thought, to anyone who knew him - since he himself had been a child, Fa Sheng was always caring for the little ones. Looking after those smaller and more innocent than he. Nobles in the court had joked that he was "their little father". He had always said he wanted to fulfill that image, that role. Now that the opportunity presented itself for him to actually become a father...
His reluctance made little sense.
_________________________________________________________

Kisei shook his head slightly, rustling against the pillows. He did not dare speak. Arguing. He should never argue. Nor should he allow himself to become excited. He cursed himself, silently, for letting his emotions running away from him.
Slowly, painfully, he drew breath. His throat constricted, fighting to cut off his air. Kisei closed his eyes. Twice a day. That was the minimum for this sort of thing. This was why he had never left the palace before. The slightest trigger sent him to the ground...

Shuddering, he reached behind him and seized Kazumi's hand. Not to request something, not because there was anything she could do. It was merely a source of comfort.

Daiki's eyes widened slightly as he turned back towards Fa Sheng. "The thrown is insecure...?" he mumbled back, trying to understand why it was said like this. Daiki frowned and turned toward Fa Sheng as he shook his head sadly. "You don't have to sound so upset about this, brother. Your attendants have been hounding you for years and now that you have a beautiful wife you still are indifferent to the thought? Why is that?" For once, Daiki's voice was neither condescending or arrogant. He was simply curious.

"I'm not talking about an heir for Fa Sheng, but a son for Katsuro. Wouldn't that be nice?" Daiki tilted his head. He couldn't wait to have a child to call his own.

Kazumi looked up in confusion as Kisei grasped her hand. Her brows furled until widening in understanding.  She curled her fingers around his, knowing and fearful because there was nothing she could do for him.

Gently, Kazumi rose to her knees and crouched beside Kisei, stroking his side with her free hand as she murmured softly to him. "It's okay, just take it slow," she whispered, holding his hand tightly. Memories of the previous night flooded her mind, triggering the same fear and feelings of loss. "I'm here, Kisei. I won't leave. Just deep, easy breaths."

Fa Sheng listened in silence to his brother, pensive. He stopped paying attention to where they were going - his horse would only follow Daiki's, anyways. There was no reason to worry about one of them straying off course. He raised one hand from the reins, rubbing absently at his temple. Lately it throbbed whenever he encountered a topic which was even remotely involved in politics and the management of the government. He had not been ready to take up this mantel when he did. Things were only getting worse as time wore on.

"It would be nice," he agreed softly. "But Katsuro... does not exist anymore, Daiki." He raised his eyes to meet his brother's. "Not all the time. Not often enough. I don't want a child to be raised in this world... look what it has done to all of us." Fa Sheng shook his head slowly and let his hand drop. "I could not be around for the child. It's would not be fair to them."
__________________________________________

This time was not quite so bad as the previous attack had been. He had caught it in time, lain down in time, to prevent a full-scale attack. There was breath, there was air in his lungs, but it was not enough. Not nearly enough. He fought through every inhalation, hardly exhaled at all for waste of the precious resource. Shuddering, he squeezed his eyes shut. A low keening sound escaped him...

Several minutes passed before it ended. The attack left him wheezing, spinning from air deprivation. He lay perfectly still, desperate to make the world stand still, not yet releasing her hand. He did not fully register how much comfort he drew from Kazumi's touch. He simply knew that he could not bring himself to let her go... and so he late on his futon, shaking, coughing quietly, and clinging to the girl he had only just met.

Daiki opened his mouth and then closed it, unsure how to respond. Whenever political matters were discussed, Daiki was beginning to notice that Fa Sheng would rub his temples. Was the stress really so strong for the emperor? Daiki sighed heavily and shook his head. "I've seen more of Katsuro in the past day than I have in the past three years. This girl has found a way to revive him I think. Don't give up on him yet, brother."

Daiki sighed heavily, looking at Fa Sheng through silent eyes. "Father was still around for us," Daiki added softly, turning his face away. "We did not have an easy childhood, but it was happy."

Kazumi watched Kisei with wide, unblinking eyes. Her hand had left his side as she merely clung to his hand encased in hers, fearful of what would happen if she released it. Would the prince also slip from her grasp in that case? It was a risk Kazumi was not willing to take.

As the attack subsisted and left a small, wheezing boy, Kazumi pressed her eyes closed in relief. The worse was over.

But no, Kazumi knew well enough that this was far below the worst this situation could have been.

Kazumi did not dare to move. She barely breathed in fear of stealing the precious oxygen from Kisei. Rather, she simply sat, wordless, wide eyes trained on the quivering prince. Unconsciously she squeezed his hand in a gesture of comfort but also to see how strong his pulse remained after the attack. It was weaker than she would have cared for, but strong enough to know this would not be the end for her dear prince. She closed her eyes softly, trying to get rid of the terror that settled deep in her stomach. Carefully she brushed the wild strands of hair away from his face, her mind blank of how to react. "You should let me braid your hair," she said at last, her voice weak as Kisei's. "It is a mess." Had Kazumi been thinking normally, she would have realized how foolish she sounded. But for now, she was lucky her voice even functioned properly.

Fa Sheng nodded silently. He had to admit it was true - though perhaps their father had not always been there when wanted, he had not been absent. He had spent time with his sons, taught them carefully what it meant to be the leaders of an Empire. Whenever Fa Sheng thought about everything his father had been... he felt both lonely, and incompetent. How could he ever measure up? Father, Emperor, and a strong man...

"I don't know, Daiki," he whispered, a definite gloom in his voice. "Somehow... I do not think I will be a good father."
_______________________________________

Kisei turned slightly to gaze up at Kazumi, bewildered by the request. Braid his hair....? What on earth...?
Shaking his head slightly, he decided that it did not matter. Slowly he pushed himself upright, pausing for an instant to test his breathing. It was not strong... but it was strong enough. Air still rasping through his chest, he turned his back to Kazumi, swinging his overlong hair around for her to braid.

Daiki paused and looked to Fa Sheng before sighing and shaking his head. "Fa Sheng, Father died when I was six. Kisei even younger. To us, you were like a father. More than a father ever could have been because you were also our brother." He smiled and clapped Fa Sheng's shoulder, shaking it good heartedly.

"If you decide you are ready for kids, I do not doubt that they will love you no matter what. And with Hatsue as their mother, the one person who can bring back Katsuro, everything will fall into place." Daiki smiled, watching his brother carefully. "You do not have enough faith in yourself, brother."

Kazumi closed her eyes, mentally bashing herself for the foolish request. Even so, she straightened and gently took the prince's hair and smoothed the rough ends. As she worked, Kazumi gnawed n her lower lip, unable to think of speech even after she had tied the braid with a stip of leather that she wore around her wrist. It was a habit she had since childhood to wear the string of her wrist in the chance it could come in handy.

She sighed softly, unmoving from behind him. "I didn't mean what I said earlier," she whispered softly, her voice almost as weak as Kisei's. "Well, I did. But I think you understood it wrong. When I said you can't die yet, it isn't because I just met you, but because want to get to know you better. You are not what I expected you to be like as our prince, even our sickly prince. You are so much more. I want to understand more about you, why you let me live and how you can be so accepting of your fate. I don't understand how you can be so strong." She closed her eyes and drew a deep breath, rising from the bed. "I'm sorry, you probably don't care. I just wanted you to know I meant no harm."

Fa Sheng reined his horse in, pausing at the crest of a rolling hill to gaze at his brother. His face was pensive, expression unreadable. He forgot sometimes that his brothers had known their Father for a much shorter time than he had. He wondered if Kisei was even old enough to recall the late Emperor's face, his deep voice, the rolling thunder of his laugh...

Thoughts of their father cracked his emotionless mask, and he was forced to turn his face away from Daiki's. Tears burned at the back of his eyes, but he would not permit them to fall. No Emperor cried.
"I will... consider it," he whispered. "Discuss it, perhaps, with Hatsue. But not until after the wedding. There will be too much to do..."
__________________________________________

For one long instant, at the end of Kazumi's speech, Kisei was silent. He stared straight ahead, back turned to her, thoughtful. How much could he afford to tell her? He had never experimented with dropping his shields around someone other than his brothers - even with Fa Sheng and Daiki he was guarded, easily provoked, not an easy person to get along with. He did not want people to get along with him. He knew how much it would hurt them when he died, if they loved him. He had seen it when their father died, in Fa Sheng's eyes.

He had saved her for a reason, however, and Kisei knew that he could not afford to betray that reason. He reached out behind him, caught hold of her sleeve and held her in place. For someone as frail as he, his grasp was remarkably strong.
"I saved your life," he whispered, "because I do not believe the theft was wrong. I have no use for these trinkets. You did." He took a deep breath. Partial truth... not the whole. She deserved the whole. "And because... I had hoped to have... one good friend before the end."

Daiki grinned and shook his head. He would discuss it. Hopefully Kisei would be pleased by this, if not merely amused. "Take your time, Fa Sheng. I do not mean for you to rush into anything. Focus on Hatsue first, make her happy and comfortable as she adjusts to life in our empire. She may be strong, but even a pebble will feel homesick on the bank of a different river."

Daiki laughed, but noticed Fa Sheng's uncomfortable position. It was always difficult for any of the brothers to talk of their father. "He would be proud, brother," Daiki whispered, edging his horse closer. "You have brought our empire to peace, found a beautiful wife, held down rebellions, and have increased Kisei's life expectancy if even only a few questionable years. Father would be proud to see the man you have become. I know I may not show it well, but I am proud to call you my brother."

Kazumi jumped to Kisei's grasp. She had not expected the motion, not the strength that he possessed. As he spoke, her brows knitted together with first confusion before settling smooth with understanding. She looked down to the ground, nodding her head softly. "I think I can do that," she said, tilting her gaze toward him. Kazumi placed her hand over the grasp on her sleeve, watching him carefully, warmly.

Fa Sheng nodded slowly and tried to banish his worries. The attempt did him little good, but it was an attempt at the very least. He smiled half-heartedly at his brother. As reassuring as all this really was, Fa Sheng could not help clinging to the worries at the back of his mind. He almost felt as though he did not know how to survive without worrying. Like he had morphed himself into this shell of the anxious leader and did not know how to find his way back out of it.

"I'm glad that you're proud," Fa Sheng whispered, turning back towards the horizon. His tone stated very clearly that while others might be proud, Fa Sheng himself was not. "Where shall we go now?" he asked, deciding to end the political discussion.

"Good," Kisei whispered, still holding onto her sleeve. He turned on the bed now to gaze at her hand. It felt warm and rough against his - she had done more physically in her life than he would likely ever do before he died. They were beautiful hands. Strong, but in a different way from his own - he could flip a coin over his fingers and make it seem as though the coin was flying. Kisei had no doubt that Kazumi could hoist herself up on her arm-strength alone. The wonders of a thieving life...

"Thank you, Kazumi," he sighed, his tone exhausted. He was healthier now, not ragged with fever, but he was still recovering. He would always be weak, easily tired out. In the wake of his attack, Kisei found that he had reached his limit. Hit a wall he could not get over or around. He needed to sleep.
