Introduction

By the year 2589 Terran Standard, humanity has left the homeworld and spread across hundreds of planets, some of them naturally suitable for mankind and others terraformed to fit our needs. Everyday, exploration teams push our frontier further and further, claiming more solar systems or discovering new intelligent lifeforms, some of which rival us in technology and power. Faster-then-light jump drives allow vessels, ranging from bulky cargo freighters to sleek warships, to travel between the stars in a matter of weeks, rather then years.

The most powerful government in human space is the Terran Union, a multi-planet federation of the Core Worlds, the oldest and richest of humanity’s possessions, governed from Earth. The majority of humans live within the Belt, former colony worlds which have developed enough to gain independents. The Belt is filled with planetary nations, ranging from monarchies to military dictatorships to social republics. The last section of human space is the Fringe, the frontier, filled with barely explored planets and small colonies.

Often the home bases for religious or political extremists, corporate own worlds or scientific missions, the Fringe is a place of horror stories told in the Core. Tales of workers laboring to death on toxic or otherwise hazardous world, mingle with stories about unregulated and unethical biological experimentation and wild rumors about settlers developing deformities and mutations.

Alright, I know most of you are wondering, is this about some sort of Sci-fi war epic, some story about mutants, a tale of worker’s rights, maybe a yarn about experimentation? Well those are possible roleplays and may come into this narrative but this is about the circus. A space traveling circus, zoo and freakshow in fact.

Cooper’s Grand Traveling Menagerie and Circus appeared about twenty standard years ago, when a one Edward Smith purchased a failing zoo on the Core planet of Aries, which was filled with Earth animals. Instead of trying to fix up the place, he had cargo pods modified into enclosures for the animals, turning each into a little piece of Earth and stored them about his freighter, The Traveler. Setting out, he began touring around the Belt and the Fringe, allowing the folks living out there to see animals that still filled humanity’s myths, folktales and wise sayings.

At each planet, he would collect some more animals, adding to his menagerie and he began to collect performers, venders and all manner of folk. By the time eight years had passed, he was at the helm of a full-blown circus, traveling zoo and freakshow. Rarely shipping into the Core, where regulations and inspections led to several arrests and seizers of more then a few of his animals, Cooper became somewhat of a major interplanetary celebrity in the Belt. More often then not, governments would declare system wide holidays, when his heavily loaded freighter would exit jumpspace on the edge of their star system.

His shows generally follow the same pattern, although the length of stay various. Once The Traveler gets into orbit above a planet, Cooper takes a several days to shuttle his people, equipment and animal dirtside and set everything up. Once they reach opening day and start selling tickets, everything falls into place. During the day hours on the planet, the circus and zoo is in full swing. When the sun sets, the freakshow takes over. Once the late night hours come around, the purely adult entertainment begins. Sometimes the show runs for a standard week, others run for over a standard month and then everything gets pack up and The Traveler jumps out of system, ready to start all over again.

But things rarely go as smoothly as that. As has been mentioned before, Core planets tend to come down hard with regulations and often have activist groups who would rather see the Cooper’s Grand Traveling Menagerie and Circus disbanded. Belt planets tend to suck the show into local politics, that or have wars and rebellions erupt around the show. Fringe planets are just plain dangerous and rarely turn a profit.

The show must go on!

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Alright folks, I have finished up the IC thread. Hopefully it will be locked and moved to the completed RPG forum.

On to the next chapter! Dark Carnival!

Everyone is invited to move their characters over and hopefully we'll get a few new fish.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Yes, on to the next planet. I'm gonna write up the close for this planet sometime today (hopefully).

I am thinking of having our current thread locked, after my next post and starting a new tab, as a sequel. The title, Dark Carnival, calls out to me.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Good to skip to the new planet. Oh, new character :) Still thinking of making up the girl you were talking about before? I think she'd make an interesting addition.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Shall we hop, skip and jump to the next planet now...? I'll draft up my new character and I can always open things with her rocking up to meet Cooper, if you fancy.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Oh no! Northern that is terrible about your screen.

I think you might be right. A jump to the new planet, kickstart posting by those who are still playing and maybe a new character or two?

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

My laptop screen has just broken so I'm currently posting off my phone. I'll try and get a post up as promised Irish but I think it might speed things along if we skipped to the next planet...

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Okay three for me...where did everyone go? :(

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Double post for me. Wondering if maybe there should be a bit of a post from Irish for the crowd from the primate act, some other daytime acts to move the show/time along until Selene can post and Gaze can post Hawks act.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

klikxx posted the other day. So I think you are safe to post :)

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

I'll be getting a post in soon. Unless Klik wants to go first? :) Once I hear back from him/her I start working on my post :D

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

So we are waiting on Selene and/or klikxx for us to continue yes?

I am interested to see the new act and what is in the drawstring bag....:)

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Time for some monkey business klikxx!

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Thanks All,
I will also be submitting a profile for the muscle AKA "BAMMER" as the two are inseparable. I know,I know, I put Blaster. Edit in order.

Somehow I will emerge from this smelling like roses
Really!! ROSES!!!

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

I am reading the character profile now...interesting character :)

Welcome klikxx!

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

I would now like to welcome klikxx to the game, with his interesting character, Harry.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

No second character for me. I will leave a decision about the time skipping to Gaze and Selene as they would have to do the majority of the posting.

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Gee, it's like this game is on auto-pilot from the GM's point of view. I don't have to do a damn thing, other then approve the first incarnation of the character.

*leans back and relaxes*

Alright, next issue, who wants to go next? We've already had Effie and Laine post. With Sinclaring missing since the 7th, that leaves us with just Hawks and Karenza (who is now using Hawks as her own personal pimp or something) but their still finishing up their own scene. I can skip us forward a length of time and allow Selene and Gaze to do posts in two different time periods or does anyone want to introduce a second character?

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Lol! I'm gone for half a day and I miss the intro of a new person. :0

Hello Ette! Glad to have another character. Welcome to GSU! I think Gaze's character is already crushing on Effie, without even having met her. :D Nice post btw. The length is amazing.

Depending on Gaze's next post, I might only post a paragraph. Since I don't have much left to muse on....Except maybe the meaning of life...Wait, no the answer to that question is 42....hmm what should I have her think about then. Hehe! I just wanted to give everyone a head's up that the short posts won't be permanent or anything.:)

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

It was good :) I liked it. Perfect first performance. Glad it helped. :)

Re: [OOC] The Greatest Show in the Universe

Aaaaaand, posted. It did help. But god, my post wound up kind of painfully wordy. Erk. (TL;DR : Effie panics and is melodramatic. Illusions happen. My spell check occasionally thinks her name should be Office.)
