The Master of the Marionette
操り人形のマスター

The One Thousand War was formed by an ancient, mysterious feud between man and monster centuries before. Between two dimensions did these beings fight, each winning, each losing. One side was of men who were stubborn and full of dying will. The other was of demons who were sinful and greedy. Because of their different locations, a permanent portal called the Elder Door was created. It remained open for years without being watched before it was closed off limits while both sides worked to recover. But during the time when the door was open, men and demons alike wandered blindly into the opposite worlds. Now that the door is off limits, nobody may exit or enter until either side issues an attack.

Among the many works to find the beginning of the war lays a company by the name of Marionettes. They have been at work to decode the lettering around the Elder Door. If they could learn the ancient language inscribed in the stone, they could force the door open and enter. Their goal? Since their creation, Marionettes has been working to find out what started this ancient feud. Was it something pointless, or did a tragedy occur that brought war amongst the two races? From the name, it is already obvious that the company might not be the most normal one around. That is exceptionally true.

Marionettes is a company of humans who specialize in the control of demons. These humans have the ability to create a contract with a demon and then control their bodies and abilities to their use. In a sense it is the human sending thoughts to the mind of the demon, commands that tell the brain what to do and when to do it. However, since the Elder Door is closed, they must use demons who migrated to Earth years before. These demons have flattened out to be almost completely human. Traveling through the Elder Door often caused loss of memory and suicidal tendencies; most demons who managed to get through the door in the first place went crazy or lost their ability to think correctly, so the number of usable demons has gone down exponentially. The company found itself out of ideas of finding a demon who could read the inscribed language on the door.

That is, until they found her. Two years ago, Marionettes picked up an odd signal resonating from the sewers beneath London, the city where the door and their headquarters resided. Upon deciphering the signals, they came to the conclusion that a powerful demon was remaining hidden in the depths. It took them almost the full past too years to catch it, though even now they cannot control it. Like most demons, it appeared to have taken on a human identity; a human girl named Damascus. She is currently being held in the cellars below Marionettes’ Headquarters with shackles that zap her power. There was one thing that the leaders of Marionettes immediately noticed, and this was that Damascus couldn’t comprehend their language. Their hopes were raised suddenly. If she couldn’t understand English, then perhaps she could still speak the ancient language.

As of now, Marionettes is sending their top agent to deal with their little problem. They hope he will be able to create a contract with her and speak to her through telepathy (it was proven that when minds connected, the Master’s language is taught to the demon in seconds). If she can speak the language, Damascus could potentially open the Elder Door for the company and get them into this opposite dimension. But even before they walk into the destructive dimension, they must deal with the military leaders who are denying access. And when they get into this demonic realm, what are they supposed to expect? What will they find? What will be the cause of the One Thousand War?

Contracts
For Marionette, it took years to uncover the mysteries of the contract. A contract is a spiritual, mental bond between two different humanoid beings. When the contract is formed, they can share thoughts, emotions, pain, and senses. In theory, it is like they are sharing a body. Though they can withhold their mental state from their partner, the relationship between the two is usually very intimate. The demon usually tends to withhold their mental state if it would cause harm to their partner, but the human has difficulties doing this since they don’t have as much power as their companion does. The contract takes form of a tattoo in the center of the chest where the heart is located. Depending on the demon, it can range from being large and beautiful to being small and simple.
For the human, the contract merely exhausts them, though for the demon it is a different story. Their bodies are put through much strain since they are doing most of the fighting and they tend to become very dependent on the human. The contract is a very unnatural thing for them since they don’t usually share their powers amongst others. Because of this, they place of the contract often pains them and causes terrible suffering. Once a contract has existed for five years, the demon becomes completely dependent on their human to move or think at all. A contract is sealed by an exchange of vows and a kiss.
There are three levels when in contract: Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. During the Alpha stage, the two have a plain relationship. They don’t care much for each other and are usually only going through with the contract to use each other for their own purposes. At this stage, the demon is the one will all the power and the human is usually fairly useless in battles. Beta stage is the next step up as the relationship deepens into a tight friendship where loyalty and trust is shown. Once this stage is reached the human’s senses and body are enhanced to allow him/her to battle as well. The highest but most rare stage is the Gamma stage. This stage – called Gamma Uno - is met when the relationship turns from a friendship to a romance. Initially, the human will gain some of his/her demon’s lesser abilities. Gamma stage is broken down into two sections: Uno and Dos. Reaching Gamma Dos is highly improbable, although not impossible. Gamma Dos is reached when the demon “embraces” his/her human. In other words, when the romance becomes sexual. Upon reaching Gamma Dos, the human is given most of his/her demon’s abilities.
When the two reach Gamma Dos, the effects of the demon coming dependent eventually wear off. Because they aren’t so strained and forced to do their Master’s work, they can think for themselves. This is the one and only way to stop the demon from becoming a vegetable.
The Crater
When people picture the demon world, most would think of a desolate waste-land filled with frightening sights. However, this isn’t completely true. Like Earth, the Crater is a land inhabited by many creatures. Those demons who take on human forms are known as Upwalkers. They tend to live in rustic, olden-day villages that are scattered through the rugged forest terrain. The servants of the Upwalkers, demons who look like humans but have unnaturally colored features, are called Upbringers. The Upwalkers and Upbringers tend to be the most powerful and should be avoided if at all possible. The third most powerful beings are Misborns. They tend to take on the forms of animals, though they are all mostly colored solid and dark colors. They can also take on a human appearance and are exceptionally beautiful, but the form zaps their energy quickly. Following these three demon levels are the Downgraders, pesky and fairly weak demons who enjoy making mischief. They take the form of ugly goblins or fairies, though they also enjoy the form of a nymph or a sprite.
Abilities from demons usually vary, but their rank gives something away to their abilities. If they are an Upwalker, they’re abilities comprise of weapon-creation, telekinesis, mind-control, and other overpowerful abilities. Upbringers usually have the power to control one of the four major earthly elements. Misborns usually resort to their animal forms for battle, although they are shape-shifters and weapon masters. Downgraders don’t necessarily have a power at all, though if they do they aren’t something to be scared of.
The Crater is mostly comprised of forest and desert. Among these two terrains are scattered villages governed by overpowerful Upwalkers. There are seven major cities that span between the two. In the forest regions are the cities of Greed, Sloth, Envy, and Gluttony. In the desert regions are the cities of Lust, Wrath, and Pride. Obviously, the demons who reside in these towns show the traits of the name of their city. The Capital Building of each city contains a section of the Elder Library, which was split into seven sections so its knowledge could be shared around the demon world. At each of these Libraries are a page from the Walker, or the book that shares all history of the world.
Characters
Stellabellum- Damascus -Stellabellum
After going through evaluation by Marionettes, it has been determined that she is an Upwalker. Her abilities consist of illusions, telekinesis, and weapon-creation. Unlike most demons, she seems to be fairly humane and doesn’t fight unless needed. She’s level-headed and quiet despite her sparking temper and utter determination. Though she can be rather difficult to get along with, people and demons alike are drawn to her intense personality. She isn’t very conscious of her beauty or her flirtatious behavior at all. Her quiet state of mind often gets her into trouble even if she isn’t trying to make anyone angry. Around Ozzy, she feels very comfortable, though also a little uncomfortable at the same time. She enjoys his strong and defined tendencies, although his lack of self consciousness scares her. Since she was born in the city of Lust, what she wants is what she gets, and at the moment her human is more than enough. She remembers most of her life before entering the human world.
Ozzy
Since his father is the head of the Marionettes HQ, it is no surprise that he was brought up working along-side the Puppet Masters. He has a charming personality, though dark, and often attracts buckets of attention from the ladies. Like his contractee, he is level-headed and thinks things through before delving deeper into uncharted waters. His patience level is high, but his control level is low. Undoubtedly because he grew up around demons who were from the seven cities of the Crater, he’s developed a very sinful personality. He usually tends to use people instead of create good relations with them and doesn’t put much thought into what other people are feeling. To him, Damascus is just another woman who will eventually fall for him – just kidding. He’s very sexually aroused by her and enjoys taunting her whenever he can, whether it just be picking on her personality/appearance or tempting her to sin the night with him.
Beethoven
Though he is an Upbringer, Marionettes doesn’t tend to pay much attention to him. His ever childish and rushed personality often causes people to turn a blind eye. His abilities consist of the control of fire and water. Like Damascus, people tend to be drawn to him. Being as fun-loving as he is, he has close relationships with his friends and also with Melissa. Though he loves her, he doesn’t seem to love her in a romantic way at all. Instead, if anything, he’s more drawn to Annalisa. Because of this, he and Melissa are often arguing and don’t get along well at all, though it’s clear to everyone else that arguing is their way of showing affection. He is currently in the Beta stage with his Mistress. Despite the fact that he doesn’t remember his past before entering the human world, he was born in the city of Pride.
Melissa
If you want to sum it up, she’s a geek. She’s obsessed with learning anything and everything and will do things she’d normally regret just to get a piece of information. She is exceptionally introverted and isn’t completely thrilled with hurting others. However, underneath her innocent ways is a flame growing. Her temper is short-fused and she’ll often blow up rather quickly when something is causing her stress – hence her relationship with Beethoven. She’s a new member of Marionettes so she’s doing her best to hold herself together, but in truth she’s exhausted and just needs some love. Jealously burns bright inside her when she sees the relationship she other Puppeteers have with their demons. She’s grown to love Beethoven over time, but he doesn’t seem to have mutual feelings.
Caspian
In his opinion, misborns that aren’t like him are trash: end of story. He is trustworthy and comforting, always the shoulder to cry on and the one to hold you. When not in his incredibly handsome human form he is in that of a dark purple cat. Like his feline form, he is naturally curious but mostly indifferent to the world around him. Being born in the city of Sloth, it is obvious that he’s sleeping and lazing around when ever he gets a chance. His relationship with those around him is fairly distant and far-fetched, but when he opens his arms to others they come quickly to greet him. His relationship with Annalisa is very close. During the times when in his human form, he prominently attempts to seduce and play with her even when others are around. They are an unbreakable duo. He is currently in the Gamma Uno stage with Annalise, though it is clear that they probably won’t reach Gamma Dos for quite some time.
Annalisa
Every group needs to have the creepy girl, and she’s the perfect girl for the part. She’s been with Caspian since her first week at Marionettes and seems to have transformed because of his demonic aura. She’s interested in dark things, bugs, anything that most girls would cringe over. Her personality, though sweet, can be exceptionally rude and blunt. Whatever is on her mind is usually expressed in a straight-forward manner whether it’ll hurt or not when it’s out. Though she is in love with Caspian, it’s clear that she’s nervous about progressing. She becomes exceptionally helpless and timid when he picks on her, even resorting to cowering behind Melissa or Damascus. Her creepy personality melts away to show an insecure mess at times, but what would you expect from someone whose childhood was a traumatizing experience?
