Act III. The AbilitiesBiomancy: Devi is a biomancer, she has the ability to manipulate, understand, and sometimes control biomass and related matter. While the field of biomancy is wide and varied, Devi’s speciality lies in the brain, mainly the chemistry of it. She has the ability to flood the brain with naturally produced chemicals, like dopamine, neurotransmitters, etc. This gives her the ability to create in people an incredible sense of euphoria, or instill in them an overwhelming sense of paranoia, fear, anxiety, terror and everything in between. She can lift a person’s mood, or crush their hopes and dreams, she can give them a sense of satisfaction, or make them feel like the world is coming to an end. All of this and more is within her power, at least theoretically, she is still learning the extent of her abilities, and some hiccups are to be expected.

Attitude: Devi is outgoing, honest, and kind to a fault (At least she think she's kind), she constantly sees the good in the world and people around her, this makes her very naive at times, but she refuses to change her outlook on life. She is also horrendously stubborn, and has a nasty habit of not listening to advice, or reason, if she thinks she is in the right.
Furthermore, Devi has slightly twisted morals. While she may be kind and caring, and she is in no way malicious, she is still morally ambiguous, and sometimes her 'help' is anything but. To put it bluntly, this is her view on people:
"Human rights, needing consent, it holds back research, it holds back science, it holds back humanity. If some may die so that others may live better, I will condemn millions to death, and I'll sleep like a baby, and just as guilt free."
Quote: "Cheer up!"
Devi Oswald quietly stepped into the bar from the back door, her curious brown eyes scanning the events with mix of shock and horror, she hadn’t been lied too, this place was pure anarchy! But curiosity overcame hesitation, and she took a few more steps into this place of chaos.
The young biomancer felt the hairs on her neck stand on end as she was nearly overwhelmed by scene before her. But before she could lose her nerve, she caught sight of Casper, desperately holding onto Monica and having a very pained expression on his face. Without another thought, and doing her best to ignore the conflict raging nearby, she quickly made her way over to him.
“Ask and you shall receive...” That was her greeting, and without waiting for a response, she suddenly laid her hands on Monica’s cheeks, and small whisps of yellow smoke stared to flickers around her form. “Blood cancer, effects everything, but so does the brain...” Using her abilities as a biomancer, Devi would quickly go about stabilising Monica’s brain chemistry, effectively undoing any imbalances brought about by the leukemia, it was only a temporary solution, but it’s the best the girl could do at the moment.
Devi Oswald pulled her hands back from Monika’s cheeks, the flickering yellow smoke promptly disappearing. That little bit of healing drained her a bit, but not much, and she gave Casper an amused look, “Cheer up! You asked for help, and here I am, I’m a biomancer, It's what we do.”
She shuffled back a bit and pointed at the womans fresh, still bleeding wound, “I can help with that too, but you have to trust me, I’ve fixed her brain chemistry, but if she loses m- Oh, hello.” She was cut off by the sudden appearance of Briena, and she fell silent, watching the other woman work.
Devi Oswald nibbled on her lower lip a moment as she glanced between Casper, Monika, and Briena. She had no idea what the man was talking about, but it didn't matter to her anyway, she just wanted to make sure the unconscious woman didn't die. "She's not clotting... But you need to stop the bleeding. If magic is out of the equation... Well, a tourniquet maybe? Or you could try cauterizing the wound..."
Devi Oswald shrugged softly and shook her head, "I can't help with that... Can we call for an ambulance? Or something?" She was starting to feel panicked, she was so used to being in control of events, so used to knowing exactly what to do, but she was at a complete loss here.
As much as Devi wanted to help, she knew better than to push the matter, she tried, and that was enough for her. "Good luck then! You'll need it!" She called out after Casper, a hint of venom in her voice, she didn't like getting yelled at... Especially not for trying to help!
In dire need of a drink she gave Briena one last look and a shrug before heading over to the bar and taking a seat, "There a bartender around here?"
Devi Oswald sipped at her double gin and tonic as she sat at the bar and surveyed the patrons and their actions, her eyes glinting with curiosity. She had her notebook out, and would often turn to scribble furiously for a few moments before resuming her observations of the bar.
Devi Oswald took a few more notes as she focused her attention on the fight which was now taking place. This bar was full of anger, rage, irritation and sadism... All brought about by false feelings of pride, entitlement, and a myriad of other more complex emotions. It was all very... Interesting, and the young biomancer had a smirk on her lips as she took notes.
When Jared walked up to her, Devi glanced up from her notepad and gave him a blank look, "Good evening, is... There something I can help you with?"
Devi Oswald blinked a few times in confusion, "Um... Okay? I'm not sure what you mean by that so I'll just take it as a compliment." She made a quick scribble in her notepad before setting it down on the bar counter and taking a sip of her drink, "Your kind... Do they teach proper manners? Because usually when you great a stranger, you give them your name."
Devi Oswald gave the creature a small nod before taking another sip of a drink and turning her gaze to the conflict raging not a dozen meters off. "Jared, a rather normal name for someone like you... My name is Devi, Devi Oswald, now, what're you after here?"
Devi Oswald opened the front door to Gambits and quickly stepped inside, her curious brown eyes taking in the bar and its patrons. After her quick glance about, she made her way over to the bar and took a seat on one of the stools, ordering a double gin and tonic and flipping out her notebook, a small grin on her lips. It was time for another night of research.
Devi Oswald sipped at her gin and tonic with a grin before she set the drink down on the counter again and picked up her notebook. This place was ever full of the most bizarre and interesting of characters, races, and emotions. She jotted down a few notes as he gaze passed over several of the patrons, she made a point of not staring at one person for too long, it wouldn't do her any good to arouse suspicion.
Devi Oswald had just taken a sip of her drink when she was approached by Van Raily. At first she was startled by the sudden question, how did he know about her skill with biomancy? But she quickly sipped at her drink again to hide her shock, as well as letting her compose herself so that when she spoke it was in a calm, natural tone. "If you're an investigator, I think it should be obvious... Whoever ordered the hit has a secret, something they want hidden, something that this investigation may uncover."
Devi Oswald set her drink down again and glanced up at Blacksad. He was an imposing figure, much more so then Van Raily, not only his size but his obvious non-human status gave Devi the impression that he was much more capable then even his demeanor and rock steady gaze let on. "My answer to both your questions detectives, is highly dependent on whether or not you pay for my drinks for the night. I am only human after all, we tend to be a self-serving bunch, and I'd hate to ruin that reputation."
Devi Oswald smiled and nodded her head respectfully, "Thank you detective, I'll promise not to rack up too many GT's." With a satisfied smirk she took a sip of her drink, a thoughtful expression on her face before she spoke up again. "The factions that exist in this city are many and varied, and the power they wield is just as diverse. It's impossible to pinpoint which one may be responsible just from speculation alone, they are all suspects if that is the case. But surely, trained detectives such as yourselves should of been able to figure this out on your own? My specialty is in bio-chemistry and biomancy... Not criminal investigations."
Devi Oswald shrugged her shoulders, a look of true ignorance evident on her face as she continued to sip at her free drink, "I haven't a clue, I know a bit about street drugs and the like, but less so about secret government kinds... I also know nothing about clans, gangs, or any of factions that exist in this city, I don't research social groups, I research people."
Devi Oswald nodded politely as the two detectives got up and left, "Of course, and thank you for the drinks detective." She shook her head with a small smile before she flipped out her notebook and started to scribble furiously, what an interesting development...
Devi Oswald finished her drink off with one big gulp before she decided to do a bit of interrogating of her own... She quietly rose to her feet and made her way over to Van Raily and Blacksad. As a biomancer, she had a few tricks up her sleeve when it came to illnesses, drugs, and their interaction with the body, and she knew something was up.
For a moment she simply stood behind Van, before suddenly speaking up, "Ya know, if your problems are with drugs, I think I can help. Unless of course, this is some sort of internal affair, in which case I'll leave it be."
Devi Oswald crossed her arms, a knowing look on her face as she glanced between Van Raily and Blacksad. "I don't know anything about this 'Project C147', but I do know more about brain chemistry and biology then either of you ever will, or the people who work on this project. I'm a biomancer, if there is a physical ailment, I can assist. Here..." She would reach out and attempt to gently touch Van's cheek, if she connected, the man would feel a sudden rush of euphoria, brought about by Devi's manipulation of his brain, causing it to suddenly flood with endorphins.
Devi Oswald nodded politely to Blacksad as he introduced himself, she barely paid any attention to Van's sudden departure, "No offence taken, we are a rare breed, us biomancers, and rightly so. We hold great powers... Even if it takes keen mind to see it." She flashed the large creature a smile before extending her hand to shake his. "In any case, my name is Devi Oswald, I have no fancy titles, nor any prior relations with well known criminal or government agencies, I'm just a... A person, I suppose."
Devi Oswald smiled and shook his hand with a firm a grip as she could manage, "A pleasure to meet you as well Detective." She listened intently as he told her of her sudden involvement in the WCPD, and despite the suddenness of it all, she readily took a liking to the idea, and with a smile she took the offered smoke, allowing John Blacksad, to light it with his lighter before she took a deep puff, blowing the smoke out without so much as cough.
"A freelancer? So technically, that means I just get paid for the work I do right? I am under no obligation to actually help, or assist in any way, unless I want too, correct?" She had to make this clear, because she didn't want to get roped into doing something against her will. She was all for making some extra coin, but it had to be on her terms.
